arguments, and then trump's defense team will get its turn. kenneth, mona. >> andrew there in washington and the trial resumes at noon eastern. abc news will bring you live coverage. now to the weather. a delta air lines jet went sliding off the taxiway at a pittsburgh airport last night. it was snowing as the plane with 77 people on board was about to take off for atlanta. rescuers set up stairs in the back of the plane so everyone could get out safely. looking at the radar right now, roads could be slick this morning from parts of texas all the way to washington, d.c. and up to three inches of snow are possible from philadelphia to new york city. we'll take a closer look at the forecast in less than five minutes. hundreds of army soldiers are being deployed to los angeles to give out coronavirus vaccines. it comes after a new variant of the virus was found in california. meanwhile, we're learning more about when the virus begins spreading. this morning new revelations about the origin of the coronavirus. world health organization investigators revealing to "the wall street journal" that covid-19 may have been spreading in central china two months earlier than first revealed by

the chinese government as early as october of 2019. the scientists say more research is needed. the more dangerous south african variant has now been found in california joining south carolina, maryland, virginia and texas. >> it's even more important for people to understand that our vaccines are still likely to prevent severe illness, hospitalizations or death from even the south african variant but here's the big -- the big consensus, the longer we let these viruses replicate, the more time we give them to mutate. >> reporter: the variants adding urgency to the vaccination effort but this morning, new frustrations. dodgers stadium, one of the largest vaccination sites in the country is being forced to close for two days because of a lack of doses. >> the problem is and here's the bad news, we don't have enough vaccines. we still aren't receiving enough doses soon enough. >> reporter: the mayor saying l.a. received 16,000 doses this week, down from 90,000 the week before. as citi field in new york, a similar problem. only 200 shots were available wednesday. >> we are so ready for more.

we turn now to the new controversy involving the national anthem in pro sports. it all started when mark cuban's nba team decided not to play the anthem before game, but now he's made a change. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> reporter: overnight the national anthem playing for the first time this season at the dallas mavericks arena after a firestorm ignited by team owner mark cuban who had decided not to play "the star-spangled banner" at home games. he says the initial decision to skip the anthem was made after speaking with members of the local community. >> quite a few people that voiced their concerns or really their fears that the national anthem did not fully represent them, that their voices were not being heard. >> reporter: critics then speaking out, texas lieutenant governor dan patrick compared cuban's move to last month's riot at the u.s. capitol. >> this is just as egregious in its own way as those who took to the streets last summer to try and tear down america, to

those who took on our capitol. this is even more divisive. >> reporter: cuban said he consulted with nba commissioner adam silver about not playing the anthem, but on wednesday, the nba released a statement requiring it to be played saying, with nba teams now in the process of welcoming fans back into their arenas, all teams will play the national anthem in keeping with long-standing league policy. >> i stand for the national anthem. my hand is always over my heart. the real issue is how do you express the voices of those who feel the anthem doesn't represent them or causes them consternation. >> reporter: cuban has been vocal about his views on racial injustice. in 2020 he tweeted, i can say black lives matter. i say there is systemic racism in this country. he says he hopes it can spark change. >> these are difficult conversations that are not going to go away whether or not we play the national anthem. >> reporter: the nba also requires players to stand during
