icy conditions wreaking havoc. >> boom. oh, my goodness. >> reporter: in atlanta a fiery 26-car crash leaving at least one person dead. in austin -- >> i've got approximately 16 cars on the top. i can't access even half. >> reporter: 26 cars in this massive wreck. but the biggest disaster was in ft. worth where at least six people are dead and 65 injured after this devastating pileup. more than 130 vehicles caught in this chain reaction nightmare leaving behind a trail of mangled vehicles stretching for a mile and a half. survivors sharing their gut-wrenching stories of what it was like trapped in all that wreckage. >> there were cars stacked on top of cars. the fact that i am not severely injured or dead is nothing short of a miracle. >> reporter: rebecca benson was on her way to work. >> you can hear semi after semi after semi hitting the group of

cars. >> reporter: alicia stones says she had to crawl out of her back window. >> you could hear them yelling, but nobody could do anything. >> reporter: officials are investigating whether the city treated the roads before the freezing rain. and now a new wave of even colder weather is threatening huge swaths of the country. texas bracing for a second round of icy storms this weekend while the midwest will see subzero temperatures, windchills dropping to 30 below zero. temperatures so low that salt and road chemicals may not be able to keep the roads clear of ice. and we'll take a closer look at today's forecast in just a few moments. in washington president trump's defense team takes the spotlight today as the impeachment trial enters day four. prosecutors wrapped up their case yesterday blaming trump for inciting the attack on the capitol arguing he showed no remorse and could provoke violence again. abc's andrew dymburt has new details on what's ahead there in washington. andrew, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yesterday was filled with

emotional and searing moments as house democrats continue to play never-before-seen video and double down on their claims that trump's words incited the aing that. today, the defense. house impeachment managers wrapping their case against donald trump. on day three of the trial democrats zeroing in on trump's slow response and lack of remorse for the january 6th attack at the capitol. >> is there any political leader in this room who believes that if he is ever allowed by the senate to get back into the oval office, donald trump would stop inciting violence to get his way? would you bet the lives of more police officers on that? would you bet the safety of your family on that? would you bet the future of your democracy on that? >> reporter: the prosecution pleading to senators that the rioters felt encouraged by trump and believed they were following his direct orders and today it'll be the defense's turn. >> i think they're making a movie, you know.

>> reporter: david schoen expected to argue trump's words in the days and weeks leading up to the insurrection are protected under the first amendment. before trump's team presents their case house managers were already taking aim. >> there is nothing in the first amendment or anywhere else in the constitution that can excuse your betrayal of your oath of office. it's not a free speech question. >> reporter: democrats meanwhile never called any witnesses. instead relying entirely on emotional and visceral video from the deadly siege. ahead of trump's defense democrats with one question for republicans who might still not be convinced. if this is not impeachable, what is? >> he struck a match, and he aimed it straight at this building, at us. >> reporter: okay, and like the prosecution, the defense team will have up to 16 hours over two days for their counterargument but the defense team has already signaled they may not use all of their allotted time and could wrap up in three or four hours.

a conviction is still highly unlikely. >> the trial resumes at noon today and we'll have complete coverage. andrew, thank you. new details about a militia group allegedly involved in the attack on the capitol. the justice department claims the oath keepers discussed a plan to bring heavy weapons into washington on a boat and began training for urban warfare. one member was allegedly awaiting direction from president trump and allegedly wrote a message saying, quote, if trump asks me to come, i will. turning to the pandemic, the biden administration's releasing guidelines on how to safely re-open schools. meanwhile, new details about former president trump's battle with the coronavirus. it may have been far more serious than we thought. this morning, new claims that former president trump was nearly forced into a medically induced coma during his battle with the coronavirus last fall. "the new york times" reports trump was so sick in october that his oxygen levels dropped into his 80s and considered putting him on a ventilator. the claims appear to be a stark contradiction to what trump's

medical team said at the time. >> has he also experienced difficulty breatheing? >> no. no, he has not. never did. >> we want to put people on the ventilator early on before they decompensate so i think that's what the doctors were considering once his oxygenation levels were below that 88% threshold. >> reporter: the revelation comes as the biden administration ramps up vaccination efforts. >> we are now on track to have enough supply for 300 million americans by the end of july. >> reporter: president biden saying the country is on track to deliver 100 million vaccine doses one month earlier than expected and has now secured 200 million additional doses from pfizer and moderna to be delivered this summer. but for now the white house acknowledges a vaccine crunch. >> for the next at least short period of time we're going to be in a shortage. >> reporter: in tampa cars stretched for nine miles as thousands tried to get their shots including some seniors looking for their required second dose who were turned away. but looking ahead, dr. anthony fauci says anyone who wants a

vaccine should be able to get one by spring. >> i would imagine by the time we get to april, that will be what i would call for better wording open season. >> reporter: dr. fauci also revealing that by september, children as young as first grade could be authorized to get the shots. the cdc is expected to release guidelines for re-opening schools today. outlining how students can safely return to the classroom. just days after the cdc director insisted schools can safely re-open before all teachers are vaccinated. the biden administration has been criticized after saying its immediate goal is to re-open half of all grade schools for one day a week. critics say that's not ambitious enough. governor andrew cuomo is facing criticism for sending nursing home patients back there last year. the associated press reports more than 9,000 covid patients were sent back to nursing homes. that's about 40% more than the cuomo administration previously acknowledged. some critics are demanding cuomo

resign citing a lack of transparency. another major crackdown on counterfeit masks. authorities seized nearly 2 million fake n95 masks at a new york warehouse sold to health care workers and at least one health care system. the fbi issued a new alert stemming from the attack on a water treatment plant in tampa last week. the fbi is calling on local governments and companies to stop using microsoft windows 7 because it could be compromised saying a lack of security updates from windows 7 makes it an easy target. hackers tried to increase the level of a dangerous chemical in the water. time now for a look at your friday weather forecast. active weather systems are on the move across the country starting with a major storm hitting the west coast bringing snow to portland and seattle and several feet of snow to the mountains. expect light snow across the plains today and heavy rain in the southeast. the mid-atlantic region gets a coat of ice with slick roads this morning.

after them. their names are freedom and samson. they're back home this morning. a massive drug bust in the san francisco area. agents seized more than 1,000 pounds of meth along with fentanyl, cocaine, heroin and dozens of guns. it follows a two-year investigation focusing on the mexico sinaloa drug cartel. 44 people are being charged. a $5,000 reward is being offered as police search for a person of interest in the killing of a yale university student. kevin jiang was shot in new haven saturday. authorities are trying to find qinxuan pan who was believed to be in the area at the time. u.s. marshals say he was spotted near atlanta yesterday allegedly driving a stolen car. he and the victim's fiancee both attended mit and it's unclear if they know each other. she spoke off camera about the support she's received since the shooting. >> so many people have been sending me messages, have been posting articles or comments on facebook. that's just so amazing, all the people that kevin touched.

an internal police investigation. now to britney spears and her legal battle with her father over control of her fortune. abc's andrea fujii reports britney's father has now lost a round in court. >> reporter: this morning, britney spears' father remains in control of her estate, but he must continue to share that power with a co-conservator despite his objections. on thursday a judge ordered jamie spears to wo with a trust company on a budget and investment strategy for his daughter's estate. daughter reportedly struggled with mental health issues and was hospitalized. last year, britney tried to remove him as conservator claiming she was fearful of him but a judge denied that request and appointed bessemer trust company as co-conservator of her estate worth an estimated $60 million. her attorney again argued thursday that britney wants her dad out saying, it is no secret that my client does not want her father as co-conservator. mr. spears' attorney telling a different story saying my client, jamie spears has diligently carried out his duties as one of britney's conservators and his love for his daughter and dedication to protecting her is clearly apparent to the court. since the release of "framing britney spears," celebrities have also come to her defense including pit bull. >> she has to get a chance to be herself. she has to get a chance to live her life. >> reporter: britney did not take part in thursday's hearing

checking the top stories, former president trump's defense team could start today. they have 16 hours but his lawyers may only need three. house prosecutors wrapped up yesterday stressing the mob attacking the u.s. capitol last month was simply following trump's orders. the mass shooting at a health clinic this week, the suspect set off three explosives. one killed and four others seriously injured. he had been previously banned from the clinic being held on $5 million bail. new video from los angeles overnight, police say a man tried to carjack a charter bus after a robbery attempt at a hotel. the suspect got on the bus and allegedly assaulted the driver who disabled the bus so the suspect couldn't escape. he's now in custody. major winter storm hits the
