sign which faced drivers on i-84 for decades. >> this is an interesting story. good morning, everybody. it is friday, february 12th, we'll get to that in a moment, we promise. we want to check in with mike for a look at our forecast for this friday. hi, mike. >> hi, kumasi, jobina, frances, hi, everybody. it is a little wet out there. let me set the table for you and show you why we have leftover showers and why the rest of the day will be free of showers. look at the winds on live doppler 7. out of the northwest and they're hitting the santa cruz mountains and the diablo range and that's naturally lifting this moist atmosphere and you can see some radar returns in the santa cruz mountains, the south bay and also over towards the diablo range. watch out for some light showers throughout the morning commute. maybe another hour or two or so before those dry up. san jose, looks like some light rain is falling there right now. dress for temperatures in the mid to upper 40s at 7:00. mainly in the mid to upper 50s at noon, 4:00 and low to mid-50s if you're heading out this

evening. more rain on the way this holiday weekend. i'll have that coming up. over to kumasi. >> thank you, mike. abc 7 is working to build a better bay area by bringing you new information every day about the coronavirus vaccine. starting today, cvs is offering free vaccinations for healthcare workers and people over the age of 65. and the shots will be offered at select stores in 16 bay area cities. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live at one of those locations, the cvs in lafayette. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, kumasi. don't get too excited. when you go on the cvs website to book an appointment and click on california, this is what you find at every location, fully booked, fully booked. so no available appointments at this time. cvs is having the same issue that vaccination sites have all over the bay area. that is limited supply. and because of that, they aren't releasing the store locations that have vaccines, just the cities. and that's because stores with vaccine could change based on

supply. so we have got a map for you showing you all the cities in the bay area that have the cvs, will have the vaccine, a total of 16 cities from san francisco to oakland to vallejo to here in lafayette. but they are not telling us exactly which stores. you do need an appointment, they will not accept walk-ins and as of right now, as you saw they don't have any available. they will be giving shots to people who are 65 and older and then also healthcare workers of any age. these doses are from the federal government, federal officials have decided to use pharmacies as distribution sites. right now cvs has 250,000 doses to administer, but that's for the whole country. they have allotted 82,000 for california. they will add locations as they get more vaccine. today is that first day for cvs to be giving out the shots. live in lafayette, amy

hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amy. rite aid pharmacies will start administering covid vaccines in seven states today including california. rite aid says it expects to get at least 100 doses per participating stores to start. the pharmacy cautions that appointments will be difficult to come by at first, but it expects that to get better within the next few weeks or so. vaccine eligibility is based on state guidelines. president biden says there may be enough vaccine to deliver to 300 million americans by the end of july. biden says the government has secured 200 million more doses from pfizer and moderna for a total of 600 billion. the president also highlighted another 100 million doses, promised by june, will now be delivered by may. >> san mateo county is expanding vaccine eligibility in over a week. starting on february 22nd, teachers, child care providers, first responders and people

working in food and ag will be eligible. these workers are included in phase 1b of california's vaccine framework. supply issues have kept bay area counties from expanding those vaccinations to more groups. with variants of the coronavirus now here in the bay area, some experts are exploring the idea providing patients with a second booster shot. one strategy that is being studied worldwide calls more mixing and matching, giving patients boosters with a different vaccine than they originally received. the goal would be to both increase supplies and broaden protection for a virus that is proving to be a moving target. >> it is likely we're going to need to boost various vaccine products at this point to adjust to the evolving variants and i think we need to study mixing and matching of different vaccine platforms. >> expertes say cutting edge messenger rna vaccines could theoretically be followed up with a much lower tech dead

virus vaccine like the one used in china. coming up later today, abc 7 news is answering your questions about covid-19 vaccines. members of our abc news vaccine team including me, reporter kate larsson and dr. lok patel will be here. that is today at 4:00 p.m. today the centers for disease control and prevention is expected to release new guidelines for reopening schools. a biden administration official told cnn the plan will focus on five key strategies including hand washing, masking, social distancing, cleaning and ventilation, as well as contact tracing, isolation and quarantine. the guidance will not suggest requiring staffers to be vaccinated, which is something many teachers unions have been demanding. president biden wanted to have schools open in the first 100 days of his presidency, but that plan is in question. now to the impeachment of former president donald trump. abc news learned there is growing tension within his legal team just hours before his

defense is set to kick off. trump reportedly does not want attorney bruce castor to speak during his defense, and this comes after two days of compelling and graphic video from the january 6th insurrection. here is abc reporter andrew dymburt on what we can expect today. >> reporter: yesterday was a day of emotional and searing moments as house democrats continue to play never before seen video of the capitol riot and double down on trump's own words claiming that he incited that attack. and today we'll hear from the defense. house impeachment managers wrapping their opening arguments in the case against donald trump. on day three of the historic trial, democrats zeroing in on trump. >> is there any political leader in this room who believes that if he's ever allowed by the senate to get back into the oval office donald trump would stop inciting violence to get his way? about the future of your democracy on that? >> reporter: the prosecution pleading to senators that the rioters felt they were following his direct orders, and today it will be the defense's turn.

the defense attorney david schoen expected to argue trump's words are protected under the first amendment. before trump's team presents their case, house managers were already taking aim. >> there is nothing in the first amendment or anywhere else in t the constitution that can excuse your betrayal of the oath of office. it is not a free speech question. >> reporter: democrats with one question for republicans who might still not be convinced. if this is not impeachable, what is? >> he struck a match, and he aimed it straight at this building. at us. >> reporter: and like the prosecution, the defense will have up to 16 hours over two days for their counterargument, but trump's defense team has already signaled they may not use all of their allotted time and could wrap up within three or four hours. a conviction, by the way, is still highly unlikely. reporting in washington, d.c., andrew dymburt for abc 7 news.

suffered leg and head injuries last night when he was caught in the closing doors of the train. it happened just after 9:00 at the powell street station in san francisco, just as service was wrapping up for the day. according to the chronicle, the rider was taken to the hospital. b.a.r.t. is looking through platform surveillance camera footage to determine what exactly happened and how the passenger was injured. >> i hope he's okay. that is just -- still ahead, we're taking a look at lunar new year celebrations around the world. and the virtual event planned later today right here in the bay area. and also, a piece of san francisco history may be preserved. what might become of the iconic

controversy with a foormer worker. it all began in september when kim stout quit her job at the girl and the fig restaurant over not being able to wear a black lives matter mask. the backlash has been intense. threats have forced him to close the restaurant indefinitely. he said he supports the black lives matter movement, but stood by his uniform policy. >> the anger is there and it gets directed in ways that i think are -- i don't understand. >> i think that they valued a uniform policy over showing support for marginalized lives. >> in the meantime, toulze announced diversity training for his staff along with increased support of black-owned businesses. sydney, australia, ushered

in the year of the ox with a traditional chinese lion dance. city held its annual kickoff lunar new year celebration at the chinese garden of friendship. sydney hosts some of the biggest new year's celebrations outside of asia, more than 80 events will take place over the next ten days. oakland's lunar new year celebration is kick off today, but virtually. organizers say they are looking at this as an opportunity to highlight traditions from different asian countries. >> historically when we had our on site lunar new year, it's mostly focused on chinese cultural traditions and how we celebrate, we wanted to invite vietnamese new year traditions, korean new year and so on. we're very happy and excited to roll this out for everyone. >> meanwhile, san francisco's public works department is cleaning up historic chinatown in preparation for the new year. the cleaning crews power washed sidewalks, alley ways, trash cans, cleaned up the graffiti on the streets and

okay, follow me on this next story here. we all know the old saying, a dog is a man's best friend. well, in nashville, tennessee, the unmarried owner of an 8-year-old border collie passed away late last year. his will named lulu the beloved pet as the beneficiary of $5 million in trust to provide for all of her needs. the estate also says the dog must remain in possession of 88-year-old martha burton who always cared for lulu when the owner was away for business. the will states burton will be reimbursed for reasonable monthly expenses. >> oh, yes, he loved the dog. he's always left the dog for me to take care of. i don't really know what to think about it, tell you the truth. >> burton says she knows there is no way she and lulu could

somewhere. martha, we're kin. let's talk about what's going on weatherwise. 101 and 880, let's look at what's going on. light showers across the south bay. so far about .17 of an inch of rain as the storm system is slow to exit the south bay. by the afternoon hours, we'll have sunshine and clouds and seasonal people taem al tempera. showers valentine's day during the evening hours. today, 57 to about 62 degrees. when you'll need the sunglasses this afternoon. tonight, upper 40s to low 50s and look at all the cloud cover with that rain and drizzle coming in. now, same time time, 10:00 tonight through noon tomorrow, about 5500 feet, another 6 to 12 inches of snow is possible on the western slopes. so some of those passes are going to be snow bound by tomorrow morning. here is a look at our storm that comes in tonight through tomorrow morning, with drizzle and light showers and less than

and then low to mid-50s if you're heading out this evening. jobina? >> thank you, mike. abc 7 news works to build a better bay area, we're tracking the challenges to getting coat individual 19 v the covid-19 vaccine to everyone who wants it. supplies are limited and unpredictable. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at a cvs store in lafayette where vaccinations will begin today. good morning, amy. >> reporter: hi, jobijobina. cvs joining this issue that other vaccination sites are dealing with and that is lack of supply. it is very complicated to be a vaccination site right now. it is such an issue that in l.a. county they had to temporarily shut down five of their sites, including the huge one at dodger stadium because there isn't enough supply. organizers of vaccination sites say this issue makes it really tough to plan. they can't offer appointments to people, unless they have a shot for them and also makes it tough to staff these large locations.

>> are you concerned about what is happening in l.a. county, having to close down sites because they don't have enough supply? >> yeah, i'm definitely concerned. that's a challenge for all of us. the unpredictability of the supply makes it very difficult to plan, particularly for large vaccination events. >> reporter: our large vaccination sites in the bay area do need more supply, for example, levi's stadium is equipped to give 15,000 shots a day. but because of supply issues they are only giving 1,000, so imagine having to staff that and figure out how many people you need there every day. but so far, bay area locations are not talking about having to shut down. they are carefully spreading out the supplies. so they can keep all of them up and running and they're hoping that more supply will be coming soon. but no appointments are available right now at cvs pharmacies like this one here in

lafayette today, today is the first day, all of the appointments are booked. everyone grabbed every available appointment, all we can tell you is just to keep trying. we got all the links on our website for vaccination sites, just keep trying, don't give up, more supplies come in, they'll be opening up more appointments. reporting live in lafayette, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amy. happening today, solano county health will hold its second covid-19 vaccination clinic for healthcare workers and resident oz ovs over 75. it is going to be there again today from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., but it is only open to eligible individuals who have preregistered. in the east bay, preparations are under way at the oakland coliseum. it is going to be opening as a mass vaccination site starting next week. the coliseum site will get its doses from the federal government. organizers plan to give 6,000 shots a day when the public vaccinations start on tuesday. and people who do get vaccinated

at the coliseum site can get a free ride home courtesy of b.a.r.t. they will offer a free $7 fare ticket to people who show their vaccination cards that they perceived the same day at the coliseum b.a.r.t. station. that's enough to get to any b.a.r.t. station in the system, with the exception of the airport. >> this morning, neighborhood pharmacies will join the race to vaccinate as many people as possible against covid-19. 64-year-old marcella thompson became the first person to be vaccinated at a walgreens in the u.s. she received the shot live on "gma" and inside the raleigh, north carolina, pharmacy she routinely goes to. the federal government is hoping to provide 1 million doses to pharmacies aacross the country. walgreens, rite aid, costco and cvs are companies that signed up for the program. that will be done -- that will

be one resource that people looking for vaccinations. >> the other is the standing up of at least 100 vaccine centers, community vaccine centers, and the other is to use mobile units to get into not easily accessible areas. >> dr. fauci says he anticipates it will be july before the federal government has enough vaccine for everyone. >> coming up later today, abc 7 news is answering your questions about covid-19 vaccines. members of our abc 7 news vaccine team including kumasi, reporter kate larsson and dr. lok patel will be here as part of the discussion. that's today at 4:00 p.m. the city of san francisco has filed a new emergency court order to force its public schools to reopen. the city alleges that the district's decision to keep classrooms closed is violating children's constitutional right to attend school. city attorney dennis her erera included testimony on the emotional toll the distance learning is taking.

children's hospital has seen a 66% increase in the number of suicidal children in the er while schools have been closed for a year now. the court hearing on the order is set for next month. governor newsom says a deal to reopen public schools in the state could be reached as soon as today. during his appearance wednesday at levi's stadium, the governor said he is working with lawmakers on a $6.6 billion early action package. and that will allow kind gasi through second grade to safely return to school. officials tell abc news phase one of the new admission program will start next week. this includes an estimated 25,000 asylum seekers who have been designated to wait for their u.s. immigration court date on the mexico side of the border. it is still unknown which ports of entry will begin accepting

cases. officials are warning against anyone rushing to the border, saying individuals should wait further instruction. now to the impeachment trial of former president donald trump, this morning trump's defense team will present their counter to the democratic house managers' case and it is only supposed to take three to four hours. democrats wrapped up their opening arguments yesterday, after two consecutive days of compelling and graphic video from the january 6th insurrection. now it appears that trump's legal team may be at odds with itself. this morning abc news chief washington correspondent jonathan carl says he has spoken with many people on or close to trump's legal team. >> we heard that bruce castor who gave that rambling initial performance won't be heard from at all, that trump doesn't want him to speak at all. yet we also heard from somebody on the trump legal team that castor will take the lead and there is even talk they might bring in entirely new people to help make the case. >> you can watch george

>> hi, mike. good morning, everyone. traffic hasn't been a big problem. the biggest challenge for commuters this morning has been the slick roads and the damp conditions as mike was telling us about with the rain that fell overnight. you can see a look at the maps, we have a lot of green traffic on the roadways, but as we move into martinez, overturned crash is on the pacheco boulevard on ramp. it is a solo car crash. so keep that in mind if you're heading through the area. just be extra careful on your drive this morning. nice live look in san rafael, southbound traffic for taillights on the right-hand side, looks good from san rafael all the way across the golden gate bridge to san francisco. and the ride on westbound 80 for headlights here moving towards the bay bridge, little crowded, but flowing well, no major problems you will need chains if you're heading up to the sierra, and it is looking nice as well into san francisco, so far

this morning on "gma" dr. anthony fauci says that the vaccine will be open to all americans, not just high risk groups, possibly as soon as april. >> once you get past the priorities, then you can essentially say anybody who is anybody can just get vaccinated. i refer to that to make people understand it as open season, no matter who you are, you can get a vaccine. when you have enough vaccines to do that, you will see a great surge in the number of people who get vaccinated. that's what's going to happen as we go from april to may to june and then hopefully by july we'll be at that point where we have another vaccine for virtually everyone. >> you can watch george stephanopoulos' interview with dr. fauci coming up at 7:00 on "gma." oakland's new police chief is reassuring business owners in chinatown in the midst of a rash of assaults and robberies in the neighborhood. more than 20 incidents of crime and violence have been documented by the chinatown chamber of commerce in recent

let's talk about the weather, shall we? drawing up some sunshine as you can see from our east bay hills camera, half an inch of rain. we have some clouds out there still and even a chance of a light shower in the diablo range and also in the santa cruz mountains during the rest of the morning commute. this afternoon, sun and clouds and seasonal temperatures. drizzle with waves of light rain coming in tonight through tomorrow morning. and sunday and monday trending a little better, still a one on the storm impact scale. 57 to 62, that's our spread today or this afternoon if you will for our high temperatures. that's close to average. now if you're thinking about outdoor dining, so much easier than last night. no rain to contend with. temperatures in the 50s. there could be a little bit of a windchill, so just factor that in if you're going to be out. let's talk about tonight, and you can see the gray that will keep us pretty mild, upper 40s to low 50s. but with the drizzle and rain rolling through, we will wake up to wet conditions tomorrow morning. and snow at the same time in the sierra, 10:00 this evening, noon tomorrow, above 5500 feet, but 6 to 12 inches of snow possible.
