but first, the latest on the second impeachment trial of donald john trump. it's entering the final phase. after the democratic prosecutors wrapped their case, saying that the president's words and actions prove he incited the january 6th siege of the capitol warning it will happen in the future if the senate fails to convict. >> and the big question right now is, can those democrats get those 17 republicans to join them? our congressional correspondent rachel scott starts us off. rachel, good morning to you. it does not look like they've got these votes at this point. >> reporter: cecilia, good morning. that's right. that number needed for conviction still seems out of reach and trump's defense team will have their first opportunity to counter what democrats have been arguing for days saying that trump is singularly responsible for the violence on january 6th and they will plan to dismantle that argument over just a few hours claiming that while what happened was horrible, trump had nothing to do with it. this morning, former president donald trump's legal team is preparing to mount their defense following a blistering presentation from democrats, warning that if the senate does not convict the former

president, the violence will be allowed to continue unchecked. >> if we pretend this didn't happen or, worse, if we let it go unanswered, who's to say it won't happen again. >> reporter: they say there is no doubt. trump knew exactly what he was doing when he told his supporters to march on the capitol and, quote, fight like hell and that he showed no remorse for it. >> he struck a match and he aimed it straight at this building, at us. >> reporter: playing videos of how the crowd reacted to his words that day. [ crowd chanting "fight for trump" ] >> thank you. >> yes. >> you have to show strength. >> invade the capitol building. >> reporter: insisting those supporters believed they were

taking direct orders from their commander in chief. >> we are listening to trump, your boss. >> reporter: lead manager jamie raskin making the case trump was laying the groundwork for years. >> january 6th was not some unexpected radical break from his normal law-abiding and peaceful disposition. this was his state of mind. >> reporter: but the majority of the republicans in the room unmoved and as the senate weighed his fate, trump was on the golf course seen in these photos from "the daily mail." his lawyer david schoen ready to claim trump did nothing wrong. >> he has condemned the violence and doesn't want to in any way be associated with what happened in this violent incident. >> reporter: the prosecutors already undercutting the defense, claiming the idea he was exercising his first amendment rightd is a distraction, and that incitement of insurrection is not protected under free speech. >> he was the president of the united states, and he had spent months, months using the unique power of that office of his bully pulpit to spread that big

lie. >> reporter: arguing this case is bigger than one man, saying the fate of the country now hangs in the balance. >> what unfathomable horrors await us if we do not stand up now and say, no, this is not america. >> reporter: and only a handful of republican senators seem to be keeping an open mind. one of them senator bill cassidy says he wants to hear from trump's defense team on why he didn't condemn the violence sooner, george. >> okay, rachel, thanks. let's bring in our chief washington correspondent jon karl, and jon, we just heard rachel say senator cassidy wants to hear from trump's defense team. we know they're set prepared to argue for three to four hours? >> reporter: yeah, they say it's going to be a short case. they have 16 hours. they won't use anywhere near that but they'll focus on that constitutionality question and also on trump's words saying that many democrats including democrats in that chamber have used similar language over the years and that it is not incitement, but i've got to tell

you, george, the trump legal team seems at odds with itself. we've spoken with many people either on or close to the legal team. we've heard that bruce castor, who gave that rambling initial performance, won't be heard from at all. trump doesn't want him to speak at all, yet heard from somebody on the trump legal team that castor will take the lead and there's been talk they might bring in entirely new people to help make the case. >> will what they say make any difference for most of the republican senators? it appears only five or six of them are in play. do you think that there are more who have open minds? >> reporter: it appears that almost all of them, george, have made up their mind not on the facts here but on the constitutionality. they simply don't believe it's constitutional to convict in an impeachment trial of a former president. >> jon, one side where the politics may be going, a major break from former president trump, from his former u.n. ambassador. >> reporter: this is really big. nikki haley is not only a former top official in the trump administration, somebody who has been very close to donald trump, rarely criticized him is

considered a leading contender for the republican presidential nomination and look what she said in an interview just published in politico. she said, trump let us down, he went down a path we shouldn't have and we shouldn't have followed him. we shouldn't have listened to him and we can't let that ever happen again. that's a decisive break with donald trump from somebody who was considered quite close to donald trump. >> we'll see if it has an impact. jon karl, thanks very much. i know you'll join us for the live coverage with our team that is at noon eastern. michael. >> all right, thank you, george. now to that dangerous winter storm system causing a deadly pileup in texas involving more than 100 vehicles and killing at least 6 people. ginger is tracking the very latest on that and the new cross-country storm on the move this morning. good morning, ginger. >> michael, you know that classically deceptive freezing rain is what caused that accident. on i-35. people say, it's raining, i'll

get in the car and go. what they don't realize is, it's colder at the surface so the rain falls and hits the subfreezing ground or, in that case highway, freezes on contact and creates a sheet of ice. high-speed wreck after wreck after freezing rain turned parts of i-35 in ft. worth, texas, into a disaster zone. more than 130 vehicles twisted and mangled for more than a mile and a half of that busy highway. 65 people injured. 6 people lost their lives. crews working through early this morning to clear the tangled mess. and that was after they went vehicle to vehicle searching for drivers who were trapped in the subfreezing temperatures. alicia stone was grateful to get out alive. >> i was one of the ones who was able to walk away. just hearing the people when we were standing there, you know, yelling for help. >> reporter: that yelling and the screams of those who couldn't get out compounded by the fear that hypothermia would set in. rebecca benson, a nurse on the

front lines of the pandemic, survived the pileup on her way home from a long shift. >> it literally was shaking my vehicle every time they would come and hit the group of cars. it was terrifying. >> reporter: rain falling on subfreezing surfaces also made for horrific wrecks in austin. this 26-car pileup sent five to the hospital and in atlanta, heavy rain caused accidents and this fiery crash on i-75 killing one person. let me take you live to ft. worth where they're still cleaning up i-35. this is now 24 hours later and they still haven't been able to get through all of those vehicles. i also want to show you that we've got a couple more storms. we're going to have anywhere from washington, d.c., to portland, oregon, included in those which i'll track but look at the polar blast for early next week. we are talking about some of the coldest air in houston that they have seen potentially in 70 years. really cold mardi gras ahead,

we're talking even subzero windchills as far south as dallas. guys. >> okay, ginger, thanks so much. we turn to the fight against the coronavirus. the biden administration with that encouraging announcement that the u.s. will have enough vaccines for 300 million americans by the end of july, that's enough to vaccinate every american adult but the white house is warning it will still be months before most americans can actually get these shots so for nearly 35 million americans have received at least one dose and now some of the nation's major pharmacy chains will begin administering vaccinations today. whit johnson is live at a walgreens here in new york. good morning, whit. >> reporter: cecilia, good morning to you. this is part of a new federal program to be able to provide an additional 1 million doses to major pharmacies across the country and while i'm speaking, we want to go live to durham, north carolina, because that's where 64-year-old marcela thompson, you see her in the picture, will be the first to

get a vaccine at a walgreens in this country as part of this new program. and marcela says that's the pharmacy she goes to all the time. there you see the shot. that's the idea behind all of this. that this is a safe and comfortable and convenient place for people. so back here in new york at the walgreens you can see this is where they're preparing for appointments today. people will check in at the desk right here and then they'll be escorted back to a private place where the vaccine will actually be administered behind this door. 6,500 locations across the country are participating in this. walgreens, rite aid, cvs, other major chains, but supply is limited initially so it's important to check online to see if appointments are available near you. >> that's good advice, whit. i want to ask about the biden administration and the news they've got more vaccines coming online, still saying it will take a while to dole out. >> reporter: exactly, but it is good news because the timeline moves up a little bit. the biden administration announcing that they purchased an additional 100 million doses each from both pfizer and moderna. that's a total now of 600 million doses to be available by

the end of july. it moves up the timeline from an initial announcement that said it would be by the end of summer and that will be enough to fully vaccinate, again, with two shots most of the u.s. population. cecilia. >> great news. okay, whit, thanks so much. let's get more on this from dr. anthony fauci. welcome back, dr. fauci. let's pick up on that news on the vaccines, the supply is going to be increasing over the summer but we're still facing many so bottlenecks across the country. how dow we accelerate distribution? how do we break through those? >> george, there are a few things that the president has put into the strategic plan, one, you just heard reported by the correspondent, namely, getting vaccines into pharmacies where people could conveniently get vaccinated. the other is the standing up of at least 100 vaccine centers, community vaccine centers and the other is to use mobile units to get into not easily accessible areas. so those are just three of the

things as you say to kind of loosen up the bottleneck of getting doses into the arms of individuals. you've heard right now we have contracted for a total of 600 million, which would be just enough and maybe a little more to vaccinate everyone with two doses. >> you've had some hopeful words and say it will be open season for vaccinations by april. explain what that means. >> yeah, george. when the advisory committee on vaccinations made the recommendations of the priority of vaccinating those, they will have all the doses you need at the same time and we started off with health care providers, people in nursing homes and they went to essential members of society together with others, for example, who are elderly and then others who have underlying conditions. once you get past the priorities, then you can see essentially say anybody who is anybody can just get vaccinated. i refer to that sort of to make

people understand it as open season. no matter who you are, you can get a vaccine and when you have enough vaccines to do that, then you're going to see a great surge in the number of people who get vaccinated and that's what's going to happen as we go from april to may to june, and then hopefully by july, we'll be at that point where we have enough vaccine for virtually everyone. >> we're expecting to see the cdc guidelines in re-opening schools today. what should parents know about whether it's safe to re-open schools and what should give them confidence that it's okay? >> you know what, i think it's going to be a combination of things. i don't want to get ahead of the guidelines that the cdc will be coming out with imminently but obviously you want to get the schools open, the president has said that he wants to get essentially 100% of the k-8 open in the first 100 days. i think that's doable. what you want to do is make sure it's safe for the students and safe for the teachers and other personnel associated with the

educational system. you can do that by masking. you can do that by getting good ventilation but you could also get that by getting vaccinations to the teachers as quickly as you possibly can. >> as cases and hospitalizations and death come down, we're seeing states more and more relaxing lockdown, montana dropping the mask mandate. here in new york, they're allowing indoor dining again, preparing to have sports venues and concerts open. ohio has lifted its curfew. is it safe to relax these lockdowns now? >> if you do it gradually, george, without turning a light switch on and off -- remember, we had that conversation months and months ago when we were trying to open up america again for the economic reasons. you want to do it. you want to do it gradually and safely as opposed to just turning it on and off right away. there are still going to be the important need to wear masks. i think we still need to do that. you want to avoid congregant settings but you can gradually get to the situation where you might open up restaurants with

limited seating and things like that. but it's got to be done prudently and gradually. >> and when you say need for masks, you mean for quite some time into the foreseeable future, a year, two years, three years? >> i'm not so sure it's measured in years, george, but i think until we get the level of virus to such a low level in the community, and i had said a projection, and it's only a projection, that hopefully by the time we get all the people vaccinated, let's say, 70% to 85% of the people vaccinated, the level of virus in the community could be so low that you could start pulling back a bit on what are stringent public health measures. you don't want to do it all at once but i think we'll be wearing masks for several, several months into the future. >> dr. fauci, thanks again for your time and information. michael. >> thank you, george. all right, thank you, george. and let's take a look at this. the first lady's valentine's day message to the nation popping up

conservatorship back in the spotlight. this morning, the battle over britney spears' conservatorship back in court. lawyers for her and her father, jamie spears, fighting over who controls her estate worth an estimated $60 million. >> i just hope britney feels the support that we all are sending all the love and support. >> reporter: in court thursday, the pop star's lawyer who has previously said the 39-year-old is afraid of her father and refuses to perform while he is in control of her finances alleging, it's no secret his client doesn't want her father as conservator. jamie's lawyers striking back saying that in court documents from 2019, spears herself had requested for jamie to be her sole conservator. ♪ a judge saying bessemer trust which was appointed co-conservator of the star's estate in november will continue its role. both sides agreeing that jamie and the trust need to come to an

agreement and work on an investment plan for the singer's estate. overnight, jamie's attorney telling abc news in a statement that he looks forward to working with bessemer adding, his love for his daughter and dedication to protecting her is clearly apparent to the court. the court hearing comes as a new documentary "framing britney spears" takes a closer look at her conservatorship which was put in place more than a decade ago following what appeared to be a public meltdown, bitter divorce and custody battle and two hospitalizations. >> free britney. >> reporter: the documentary also follows her loyal army of fans in the free britney movement which claims the conservatorship is being used to control her against her will. >> if i'm wrong and one day britney does come out and tells us that we're wrong and leave her alone, we will do just that. >> reporter: on thursday some showing up outside court. >> if i could say something to britney spears, i would say, britney, we're here to support you. >> reporter: earlier this week spears tweeting, each person has

the "born to run" singer was stopped by a park ranger in november at the gateway national recreation area getting ready to take off on his motorcycle when an officer says he saw him take a shot of tequila. that officer says he noticed the 71-year-old springsteen smelled strongly of alcohol, had glassy eyes and was visibly swaying back and forth. according to the report, the legendary musician admitted to drinking two shots within 20 minutes and was seen with an empty bottle of patron. when asked, springsteen confirmed he was going to drive out of the park. the document also said he struggled through a field sobriety test. the new jersey icon was charged with three counts including driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area according to the national park service. >> it's no secret the middle has been a hard place to get to lately. >> reporter: jeep quickly took down its brand-new super bowl ad

>> reporter: good morning, george. just days after he got engaged and days before his 27th birthday on valentine's day, kevin jiang was shot and killed here in new haven and we are learning more now about that person of interest who was allegedly in the area the night of the murder. this morning, an urgent manhunt for a person of interest in the fatal shooting of yale graduate student kevin jiang. u.s. marshals now joining the search for this man, 29-year-old qinxuan pan, offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to his location and arrest. police say pan was last seen yesterday driving family members near atlanta. according to family pan was carrying a black backpack and acting strange. >> mr. pan should be considered armed and dangerous. extreme caution should be used if you come in contact with this individual. >> reporter: jiang was shot multiple types and found lying outside his car in new haven. investigators say pan was in the area at the time of the shooting. jiang, a 26-year-old army vet

>> reporter: hey, michael, good morning. with these freezing temperatures a lot of the snow that's fallen over the past two weeks just isn't melting. just take a look at this right here. even if some of it does melt during the day, it is then freezing right back up again at night creating that dangerous and invisible black ice. these are real hazards on the road right now. icy conditions turning the morning commute into a nightmare in ft. worth, texas, wednesday morning. across the country, slick roads and freezing weather leading to massive pileups and devastating accidents in recent days. including this truck that plummeted 70 feet off a wisconsin highway overpass. the driver lucky to be alive. >> there was just too much snow on the side of the road. that once the tires got into like two foot of snow, there's no controlling a vehicle of any kind. >> reporter: so what do you need to know to stay safe when

driving on frozen roads? >> take your time. allow plenty of following distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you. >> reporter: sergeant lawrence peele of the new jersey state police saw the video of that crash in texas. >> so at the end of the day, if you find yourself in one of these pileups, stay in the car. that is the best recommendation. >> absolutely. you want to be inside of a vehicle to give yourself that layer of protection. >> reporter: unless, of course, you smell fumes or smoke. experts say your tires, make sure they are in good condition and if the treads are worn down replace them right now. to show how dangerous low tread tires can be we went to the "consumer reports" auto test track in 2019. >> a tire that has a good grip will stop in a shorter distance. >> reporter: at 60 miles per hour on a wet track we slam on the brakes while computers in the car measure the distance it takes for the car to stop. with brand-new tires, the car stops at 161 feet.

dangerous weather that's on the move across the country. ginger is tracking the very latest this morning on more snow, ice and the bitter cold blast. good morning again, ginger. >> good morning, michael. the last thing we need for these roads is more ice and snow but that's what's going to happen. let me share with you what happened in ft. worth, texas. this was about 24 hours ago and they're still cleaning up i-35. still shut down because that -- it was a tenth of an inch of freezing rain. rain falling on that subfreezing surface creating a sheet of ice. you had 130 cars involved that stretched for a mile and a half. that wreckage had six people killed and 50 people injured. i want to bring you other images and this would be from the storms that are coming because there's more. it's just a series of them moving across the one ha created that issue in texas is moving out. but we've got another for washington, d.c. with some freezing rain possible tomorrow and then the third that's going to go as far south with snow as

rollout is the walgreens group vice president of pharmacy operations, reena shaw. thanks for being with us. good morning. >> good morning, thank you so much for having me. >> well, i want to get right to it. so many have this big question on their mind right now. when will they be able to get a vaccine, so when will walgreens be able to get a vaccine to everybody who wants one? >> it's -- first of all, we're really excited about this next milestone of the program and what that means is that the cdc and the federal government has given pharmacies vaccines so we can start immunizing. i along with everyone else are looking forward to the vaccine but still have to be patient because there's limited vaccine available. so every state has their eligibility criteria that's in place and patients are to follow that eligibility criteria in order for them to get vaccine and we have everything listed out on the site to see when you're eligible, where you can get vaccine so you can schedule an appointment. >> walk us through the process. if someone wants to get their vaccine through walgreens, where do they start? >> yeah, the great thing is we have multiple options, the first is you can go online. you can go online, be able to understand when are you eligible to get the vaccine and then schedule your appointment.

you choose the store as long as there's appointments available, you can choose a different location as long as they have appointments and inventory. >> okay, i've got a question for you from stephanie, i have the same one in my own family that a lot are trying to help their parents get these vaccines. she's tweeting, my parents are elderly and live at a distance from me. can i arrange for them to get the vaccine from where i am? >> great question, stephanie. that's something that actually i was doing for family members. you can. you can go online and as long as your parents -- anyone that's elderly are able to schedule -- get an appointment or get the information registered online you can schedule on their behalf. even more importantly, we just recently launched a partnership with uber in which those patients that are in underserved communities, black and brown communities, we will be offering rides to patients that are looking for transportation so as soon as you sign up for an appointment you'll get a confirmation as well as a link to go ahead and be able to

schedule transportation for your patients to the store, so it's a way to ensure we're reducing any barriers in place to ensure patients are able to get to the store and get vaccinated. >> such a crucial step. so great to hear you're doing it. one more from jamie on facebook and she ask, what is the plan if people don't show up for their vaccine appointments? i keep hearing stories about vaccines going to waste and i want mine. >> i know, every -- there should be no dose that's left unvaccinated and so that's one of our policies at walgreens. ultimately in case someone does cancel an appointment, we have a process in place to ensure that we're reaching out to patients or if there are patients that are interested we can reach out and ensure that those patients are immunized and so ultimately every dose that's at our walgreens locations will be administered. we just have a process in place to ensure that there's extra patients available that we can immunize in case that does

happen. >> really great information. thanks for your time. >> with the vaccine rollout ramping up a new recommendation for women about waiting to get a mammogram after getting your covid shot. chief medical associate dr. jennifer ashton has more on that. break down what this recommendation is and why. >> yeah, amy, props to the society of breast imaging, the radiologists who interpret mammograms because they're seeing in realtime some enlarged lymph nodes in women who have had the covid vaccine and they don't want that to produce confusion with results of their mammogram so they're offering some suggestions. if possible, one of them is to get your mammogram before your first shot or wait four to six weeks after your second shot and important, amy, talk to your radiologist and your doctor. let them know which arm you've been vaccinated in and when. this is so important. >> dr. jen, i was just talking

forecast, after saturday now to celebrating the lunar new year. a special day for more than a billion people with roots in asian culture, it is now celebrated around the globe with gifts, traditions and, of course, food. juju chang has more. ♪ >> reporter: this morning, celebrations across the country taking center stage. the lunar new year known for vibrant dances and decorations, a major holiday for 1.5 billion people around the world. it's often called chinese new year but it's not just the chinese who celebrate. many asian cultures take part. >> chinese new year is fun. i always try to decorate as much as possible. >> reporter: instagram influencer phoebe came to the u.s. for college. now back home in china using her feed to share her heritage. >> i feel like i definitely have that responsibility to share as much as i know and as much as i can on social media.
