know and when did he know it, and i spotted senators murkowski and some are already made up their minds. >> rachel scott, thank you. it's just after 11:00 on the east coast. dramatic twist in the senate trial this morning. a call for new witnesses, majority vote for new witnesses based on account from jamie herrera butler last night talking about a conversation ke kevin mccarthy had with president trump on january 6th. here is her accounting of the conversation. mccarthy to the president, you got to hold them and get on the tv, you need to get on twitter and call these people off. the president responding, kevin, they're not my people. the president at the time was saying these were antifa protesters on the floor. mccarthy saying yes, they are. they just came through my w windows and my staff is running for cover. yeah, they're your people.
8:01 am
call them off. the president saying these people are more angry and upset about the election than you are. the house managers came to the floor this morning, requested witnesses, requested a subpoena of congresswoman herera beutler and raised the possibility other witnesses will be called, as well. that got a majority vote in the senate. you seen republicans now say lindsey graham, led by lindsey graham, the president's ally saying you want to call many witnesses at this point. this appears to be a pressure tactic to get other republicans to reverse their vote, so this trial can move to a conclusion, and i want to bring in janohn cl now, our chief white house correspondent because this news, this revelation hit former president trump very hard in mar-a-lago. >> it sure has, george. this is why. donald trump was preparing for this to be over, over today. was expected to make a public appearance, perhaps immediately
8:02 am
after a verdict or in the next day or two to declare victory or vindication saying they went after me and i was acquitted but now we have this. this was entirely unanticipated by donald trump's legal team. they do not think witnesses would happen and we are told by sources close to the president that they are stunned, stupidfied and trying to digest what the implications of this are. what will happen next, who could potentially be called as witnesses? this could obviously, go beyond simply one congresswoman talking about what kevin mccarthy told her about his call with the president. could you also get into a situation now where the clear majority wanting more information where members of the president's personal team, people like mark meadows, his former chief of staff could be
8:03 am
called as witnesses on the trial. >> john, to the point chris christ christie was making, the presentation on the floor made yesterday on the senate floor by the president's team, the pr presentation president trump wanted. even repeating debunked voter fraud allegations coming out of the state of georgia. >> there were aspects of the presentation that had nothing to do with an actual defense but were here to please donald trump. particularly, going after the democrats, the extended clips that were played of people like elizabeth warren and hillary clinton, trump's favorite targets to try to somehow create a sense that they had done exactly what he had done, so there were clearly aspects of this trial that were really about pleasing the client, the client wanted to hear his voice on that senate floor. we heard extensive replaying of his speech, edited version of his speech on january 6th, and
8:04 am
george, we had been told that one member of the president's team, mr. schoen threatened to step down and to resign from the president's legal team in advance of that presentation yesterday because apparently, he was -- he had issues with the use of all these video clips and the repeated use of the video clips as something that might be titillating to supporters of the president, maybe the president himself but really, nothing that would help him in his defense in this trial. >> okay. john carl, thank you. let me bring heidi back. heidi, we heard rachel scott describe what was happening on the senate floor right now. give people a flavor of what they might be feeling like down there right now and they certainly seem to be carrying out what you predicted, trying to put pressure on people like mitt romney who voted for the witnesses. >> yeah, there is tremendous pressure on these republicans right now. we saw it once before, very
8:05 am
clearly when john mccain was pressured to vote against the aca in nosethose late hours. this is the level of pressure. they are going to engage their republican colleagues over in the house to pressure them. they're going to put full on court pressure on their state republican committees. they're going to try to find out who are their friends that can persuade them but chris christie nailed it. the reason why this is happening is because they just didn't sit down yesterday. in fact, they did not tell the truth what was happening and i can tell you one thing about my friend susan collins and lisa murkowski, you better tell the truth and now they are reaping the rewards of that failure to just stick with the constitutional argument, and so i don't think -- once you take a vote like this, even though the pressure comes, you know, barbara constock said it best. you took the vote. you already got the hit. you're going to be sitting with
8:06 am
that vote and hoping it was the right vote. so i don't think they have a shot at reversing this, which is why lindsey graham now is threatening to protracted trial because he thinks that will provide the pressure they need for some kind of compromise on witnesses, not calling witnesses but a compromise. >> all about leverage there. you mentioned bar bara constock. you were a top house republican staffer at that time. the possibility of broader subpoenas that on the table right now could be quite significant, quite dangerous for former president trump. >> yes, it is and i think senator graham, they are not in a position of strength because there are votes for the witnesses. there are votes to certainly get congresswoman herrera beutler
8:07 am
there. chris christie was right. they melssed up yet. it wasn't a great presentation. continuing to threaten people isn't a good position because you're basically threatening people who are jurors. that's not a good place to be as a defense attorney threatening a juror, which team trump has been doing all along in the house impeachment vote going after liz cheney and adam kinzinger. one of the things when mitt romney was harassed where he was flying back for january 6th, donald trump referenced that, you know, whether it was at the rally or somewhere like hey, that wasn't fun for him. he revelled, it clear from the record the president revelled in his political opponents or those who are just standing up against the mob. he revels in them getting attacked. that's why i think it so important to have this conv conviction, to stop that
8:08 am
bullying. you got to stand up to a bully. that's what, you know, a lot of -- not a lot but these republicans who stood up are standing up against the bully and giving a good model to the country what you need to do in these situations. >> barbara, give everybody a sense if indeed those four republican senators do not switch their votes to shut this down, we're really heading into new is another new negotiation between chuck schumer and mitch mcconnell, the democratic leader and republican leader how to move forward at this point, how many witnesses to have, which documents to subpoena and they would essentially come to some agreement on a new resolution. >> well, i don't know they need to have a new resolution. i mean, the democrats have the votes and have the additional republicans who will be with him. one of the things i suggested back on january 6th or 7th was to get the president's phone records to see who he was calling during that time to get a physical picture of what he was doing, regardless because i
8:09 am
don't think you're necessarily going to trust some of the people around him, but one of the -- if they do call some of those people, maybe some of the lesser aides, not a mark meadows, you have a situation where these people, many of them are unemployed and they might have a story to tell and they're not going to have expensive lawyers or anybody protecting them and they'll have to come forward and that's a danger to the president, to donald trump's case, also. >> barbara comstock, thanks very much. let me bring terry moran back. this is the first unscripted moment of the trial and it's still going to be an uphill fight to convict. it doesn't appear the votes are there. once you have a twist like this, anything can happen. >> that's right. trials have their own logic. it's a moment where the natural course of the trial is taking hold and all of the political
8:10 am
deals that have been struck between schumer on behalf of the white house and mcconnell and the president's lawyers and the house managers, there is something that needs to be done here. it is a search for truth and to get at that truth somebody stood forward and said i have some. they will listen to them. >> they will listen to them. we can see this on the senate floor. we don't know what this means. we thought we were 45eheading towards a final vote in the senate today. we thought it would be final arguments and a final vote but what is unfolding as soon as the senate went back in session. the senate majority called for one witness, congresswoman jamie herrera beutler talking about a phone conversation on january 6th. that has passed. they are trying to figure out how to move forward. we'll go off the air and you'll be watching gma. we'll come back as news warrants in this impeachment trial the second impeachment trial of donald john trump.
