trump's second impeachment trial. that breaking news is a dramatic twist this morning to the fate of the former president's political career, charged with inciting the violent insurrection of the u.s. capitol. at the 11th hour, the senate's expected decision is pushed to another day. >> last night, congresswoman jaime herrera beutler of washington state issued a statement confirming in the middle of the insurrection when house minority leader kevin mccarthy called the president to beg for help, president trump responded, and i quote, well, kevin, i guess these people are more upset about the election than you are. >> the news of the phone call coming to light last night is the source of the new decision. democratic impeachment managers arguing they need to hear from congresswoman jaime herrera beutler, the exact details of the phone call between former president trump and house republican kevin mccarthy of bakersfield. now widely reported that

mccarthy from inside the u.s. capitol during the siege shouted at former president trump to calm his supporters clearly to no avail. so people want to hear about the phone call. the defense team responding saying house impeachment managers had several days to complete the final case. >> after what happened here in this chamber yesterday, the house managers realize they did not investigate this case before bringing the impeachment. they did not give the proper consideration and work, didn't put the work in that was necessary to impeach the former president. >> just before senators gathered for today's trial, abc news learned senate minority leader mitch mcconnell reportedly told his republican colleagues he would vote to acquit former president trump. of course, that could change depending on the new witness testimony, but seems like it is getting increasingly harder for democrats to get the 17

republican votes they need to get a conviction. we're also learning there is a chance they readjourn today. if so, that may happen around 9:30 our time. we will bring it to you live or stream it and follow the updates as they come in. we of course are following the breaking news and developing situation, day five of the impeachment. meantime, little closer to home, let's get a check of the weather, get over to meteorologist lisa argen. hey, lisa. >> hey, liz. the quick moving system brought in a little rain to everyone. as we look live at live doppler 7, it is progressing southward. we had some showers in the east and south the past hour and overnight and in the early morning hours. you can see mount hamilton. san jose, wet weather. level one system winding down the next few hours. dropped anywhere from a couple hundredths to a tenth of an inch of rain. upper elevation winds are 20 to 36 miles per hour there from the oakland hills to mount diablo

and san jose, passing shower right now. it is in the low 50s downtown and in san jose. 54 on the coast. look at the north bay, san rafael is sunny. call it partly cloudy for the rest of the day with numbers getting close to where we will be for the rest of the day simply because the northwesterly winds are going to blow and it is going to feel cool. upper 50s to near 60 with mix of clouds and sun, breezy to gusty winds. we will talk about a next chance of rain that comes in as soon as tomorrow night, and into the holiday weekend in a few minutes. liz? >> thank you. more breaking news to tell you about. magnitude 7.1 quake rocked the coast of japan almost exactly ten years after the powerful quake that caused the fukushima tsunami and nuclear disaster. usgs says it hit at 6:10 our time off the coast of northeast japan. shaking could be felt in tokyo, further south. according to local reports,

there's no tsunami threat now. there's no initial reports of damage to the nuclear power plant. japanese officials say there's been no change in radiation levels from damaged fukushima reactors. california is expanding the list of people eligible for the coronavirus vaccine. people under 65 with severe health conditions or high risk disabilities now qualify starting mid march. abc7 reporter liz kreutz is part of the vaccine team, spoke with medical experts about what the expansion means. >> reporter: she's nine months pregnant. in her womb, the miracle she prayed for. >> so cute. >> reporter: after months of isolation, she says growing a baby in the middle of a pandemic has been challenging. she heard the news she was hoping for. california is expanding its list of people who are eligible to get vaccinated. now she's included. >> i think it's great.

i also think that it is kind of risky. >> reporter: the fact that pregnant women weren't part of the trials, does that concern you? >> the data on whether they're at risk or not is mixed. cdc is trying to err on the side of recommending vaccine for pregnant women. >> reporter: with this expansion, another 4 to 6 million in california qualify to get vaccinated. the list now includes those 16 to 64-year-olds deemed to be at the highest risk for mortality from covid-19. those with cancer, weakened immune system, organ transplants, down's syndrome, mo among others. the doctor is glad the state is following the right data for the expansion. >> 80% or more hospitalizations and deaths in this country are in people over 65 and people with underlying health

conditions. >> reporter: dr. mol done add oh is part of the vaccine crew, and believes we will have enough supply with the johnson & johnson vaccine if authorized to vaccinate more people once this group expansion goes into effects march 15th. >> we think by march there should be vaccine pretty quickly, but won't be the full 100 million doses. >> the topic of vaccine eligibility came up at the vaccine town hall yesterday. dr. nadine burke harris, surgeon general of california, joined abc7 to talk about the challenges. >> while we are expanding eligibility to this group of people, we do want to recognize that supply is still limited, although it is increasing week by week. so we want to let folks that it will still take time to get an appointment even if

vaccination card, get a ticked loaded with $7 to get you anywhere in the system other than the san francisco airport stop. the colosseum site opens this tuesday. the goal to administer about 6,000 doses a day, and gradually increase. it will be open to anyone eligible under alameda county guidelines. and governor newsom is crediting local and state efforts with getting a handle on the pandemic. the governor toured the mass vaccination site in san francisco yesterday. he called the facility state of the art and said its platforms would be used as centers statewide. he says california is making progress with more than 5.5 million doses administered so far. >> we are now averaging roughly 200,000 vaccines being administered each and every day. that's double where we were a few weeks ago. what the site proves is that the only limitation in our capacity to do more is supply. >> more than a million doses are

expected to arrive next week. in the east bay, people in oakland's chinatown kicked off the year of the ox amid calls for police resources in the community. abc7 reporter matt boone explains while businesses want to raise awareness, they don't want to scare away customers. >> reporter: no big crowds this year, but the pandemic couldn't stop the dragon dances from being streamed online. as night fell. >> once sun sets, everybody closes, they're afraid. >> reporter: he manages from the heart flower shop in chinatown. he stayed open late as lunar new year is one of the busiest times f the year. this year, sales are down, first due to the pandemic. he worries foot traffic will decline after several high profile cases of violence in the enabled, including a 91-year-old man pushed over down the block. new oakland police chief and the mayor walked the neighborhood but he says more action is needed. >> they don't have a reason to

on hold to find other outside candidates after the minneapolis police chief withdrew his application. the virtual forum starts at 10:00 a.m. on the city's youtube page. governor newsom may be inching closer to recall election. organizers for recall gavin 2020 say they surpassed the 1.5 million signatures needed to put the proposal on the ballot. the signatures still need to be verified and then if they're approved, the recall election would happen this summer or a little later this year. linked in is apologizing after removing a job posting that required applicants to be nonasian. they posted this job posting for a position in menlo park. you can see it circled on the screen, many called out the company and linked in on tiktok and other social media platforms. abc7 talked to one of the people that first brought it to the public's attention. >> when i first reacted, i was taken aback.

>> reporter: the cdc out with a road map to reopening schools, centered around this color coded system. blue zones represent lowest risk, red, highest rate of community transmission. for schools in red zones, hybrid, virtual learning encouraged, while blue and yellow allows for full in person instruction. masks and social distancing are urged for all zones. so is diagnostic testing. cdc saying teachers should be vaccinated as soon as possible, but it is not required to reopen schools. the cdc also releasing this guide to help teachers modify classrooms. 15 recommendations include spacing students 6 feet apart same direction, increasing ventilation, senting up hand sanitizing stations. it is guidance president biden hopes meets the benchmark to open most k to 8 schools in the first 100 days. >> having a firm set of science based guidelines is critical, but it is important to account and give people flexibility to

education. cdc director says these are just suggestions, won't be used to shutdown schools that don't follow guidelines. >> and for bay area school districts, the cdc guidelines reinforce what many of them are already doing to get kids back in the classroom. abc7 reporter laura anthony has that part of the story. >> reporter: for bay area school districts, the new cdc guidelines provide little new information. but certainly affirmation of what many of them are already doing to bring students back in person. >> good news with this information today from the cdc is that it does reaffirm we are on the right track, we have been getting the necessary ppe in place. >> reporter: the key directives, like wearing masks, physical distancing, and hand washing are already an integral part of any reopening plan and are already in action in some districts like ar end oh which brought some students back this week.

schools. deep blue means in person learning taking place, light blue, hybrid system is being used. yellow means distance learning only. find this interactive map on abc7news.com. new this morning, the university of oxford will soon launch the first vaccine study that looks at the safety and immune responses in children and young adults. children ages 6 to 17 will be the focus. 300 volunteers take part. the first vaccinations are expected sometime this month. previous trials of the vaccine in adults show it is safe and has high efficacy. this morning, a california woman sick with covid-19 while pregnant with twins is giving back to the hospital that saved her life. dallas selling and her growing twins are healthy now, but were hospitalized for seven weeks. a month after being released, she's donating 50 ipads to the hospital to help patients connect with family members in time for valentine's day.

dishes. your cake, how would you describe, it is a sweet dough that's steamed. it is year cake. we add a little coconut milk to it which gives it that sort of extra flavor. then it is steamed. once it is steamed, comes out, it is cooled. usually typically made only this time of year. we have a yellow cake. steamed with some sugar. it is like flour, eggs, sugar, mix it up, steam it. then kind of flowers up, it is like a prosperity cake. we like to place food as an offering for them. so during new year's is when we

recounting a conversation she had with kevin mccarthy the house republican leader on january 6th where the president and kevin mccarthy got into a disagreement where the president would call off the protesters. senator butler actually described that phone call in a town hall. >> i asked kevin mccarthy about this. he said he finally got through to donald trump and he said you have to get on tv, on twitter and call these people off. he said, kev, these aren't my people, they're antifa. kevin said no, they're your people, they just came through my office windows and my people are running for their lives. you need to call them off. the response to kevin was chilling, it was, i guess kevin they're more upset about the election theft than you are.

against us. and from what senator liz cheney said. on january 6th, 2021, a mob insur rected the capitol to stop the counting of the presidential votes. this insurrection caused death and injury in the most sacred place of the republic and, senator cheney continued, much more will be clear in days and weeks, but what we know now is enough. the president of the united states summoned this mob, assembled this mob and lit the flame of this attack. everything that followed was his doing. none of this would have happened without the president. the president could have immediately and forcibly stopped the violence, and he did not. there never been a greater betrayal by the president of the united states of his office and his oath to the constitution. i will vote to imh
