home. as abc7 news anchor dan ashley tells us the virus is also opening up an opportunity for thieves. >> reporter: the cdc is now warning those new more contagious variants across the u.s. could easily cause another surge in covid cases. >> i know the variants are concerning. i'm talking about them today because i am concerned too. >> reporter: they believe the uk variant will be the dominant strain and soon. it is more transmissible and new uk data shows it is likely more deadly. the cdc is also tracking the south african variant now found in at least nine states and washington, d.c. a new cdc report now shows the south african variant caused a 16-fold increase in cases in one month in zambia. there is concern over what could happen here in the united states. and when it comes to masks, federal authorities have revealed they seized close to 10 million counterfeit 3m n 95 masks in recent weeks. hundreds of thousands of fake masks were found in western

hard. now there is a new resource. gilroy has the highest case rate of any city in the county. out of a population of more than 55,000 there have been more than 7,000 confirmed cases. to help slow the trend. a vaccination site opened at the gilroy senior center. the popup site is going to be open two weeks. a mass vaccination site also expected to open at gilroy high school by the end of the month. extreme weather across the country is faking a toll on the fight against covid-19. jobina is joining us on the issue and how the problem is still being felt here in the bay area. jo jobina? >> the race to vaccinate is more important than ever especially with these variants we're talk about. dangerous winter storms are hampering vaccination efforts in more than a dozen states right

low- to mid-40s the south bay. rest of the bay into san francisco. pacifica the mild spot 51 degrees. your community the western span of the bay bridge, how clear and dry it is right now. in fact we're lacking fog this morning and it is going to be a pretty smooth ride on the waters. the breezes will be fairly fairy tempered today. a look at our clouds there. increasing. and they will continue to do that. we'll see radar returns over us during the day but that will be under cut by some low level dry area so it is not until we get till about 7:00 we start to see some of that moisture reach the ground. especially lake and mendocino counties. it is all green. no yellows, no oranges and that would signify some moderate rain.

report and jobina is tracking the numbers. jobina? >> thank you kumasi. we've got much higher than expected numbers for initial jobless claims this morning. 861,000 people applied for unemployment benefits last week. an increase of about 13,000 from the week before. economists forecasted 773,000. in addition to that the prior week's figures were revised from 793,000 to 848,000. that means nearly 4.5 million people are still receiving state unemployment benefits. we'll see how wall street reacts when the markets open in about 45 minutes. new developments in the coyote attack in moraga. the california department of fish and wildlife confirmed the animal that bit a 3-year-old on tuesday is the same coyote responsible for three other attacks in the same area. the coyote bit the girl while she was walking with her mother. she was not seriously hurt.%

the other attacks happened last year between july and december and the cdfw is trying to find this coyote. happening today. a first of its kind celebration in san francisco. it is called "bridging diverse communities through art and culture." the event celebrates both black history month and the lunar new year. and featuring performances from asian and african american communities. all of this kicks off at 6:00 tonight. you can watch it live on the city's youtube channel. an upcoming fundraiser is counting on food to bring people together. a virtual cookoff set for saturday to raise money for "good good eats," an oakland group that helps bridge the divide between black and asian communities. the participants will learn to make chinese dumplings. the event was inspired by feelings of helpless rns and anger over the recent attacks in china town. >> this dumpling fundraiser so the really create an environment which we are fueled by the anger we've all felt because of these
