here's emeryville. numbers are in and around the mid 40s in the inland valleys, 49 in san francisco, 50 in mountain view. as we look to the east bay, this is walnut creek. you can see the clouds there, it is in the low 50s for concorde, 54 in knnovato. going through the rest of the af , call it partly cloudy. good deal of sunshine. mid-50s at the coast. upper 50s to near 60 in warmest locations. getting to sunset, winds dial back. we have winds to contend with, we will track them in a few minutes. >> lisa, thank you. some high school sports allowed to resume play in california as we mentioned, but there's one big requirement, a county must have a covid case rate below 14 per 100,000 residents. that includes most of the bay area, except for sol and oh and contra costa counties.

we spoke with a coach about returning to the field. >> it has been a year since she scored a goal with high school teammates. >> high school sports ban was lifted on some outdoor sports, extra protocols in place. >> outdoor youth sports done safely is not a threat to the community. >> you kind of know that i will get to have that portion of my senior year soccer wise, being able to practice with girls i have been playing with the last few years is exciting. >> she has been playing club soccer and made the varsity team as a freshman, sending recruitment bills, losing senior year due to the pandemic means potentially lost opportunities for being recruited to play in college. >> for me personally, playing soccer is a big influence where i go, it has been a big part of

my life so long. >> her father sitting by her side said it is tough to watch her miss out on the final year of high school play after dedicating her life to the beautiful game. >> you get knocked down, you get back up. the challenges and adversity life throws at you makes you a stronger person. >> the season starts in two weeks. the family wants to know when safety protocols are in place before giving her the green light. she remains optimistic. >> able to go out, see teammates, play with them is exciting. >> parents and students of one san francisco elementary school held a protest calling for schools to reopen campuses. part of a series of zoom in mornings, where they gather in front of locked school sites or in nearby parks. organizers say it sends the message they're ready to learn at school together. you can see at least a dozen students and parents braved the cold and light rain yesterday. >> the goal bringing everybody out is to show what kids are

going through, that zoom school has been so hard for them, they're willing to come out in the rain to show what's going on, to show people that don't know, that aren't aware how hard this has been on them, but they want to come out and be with peers. >> so far, there's no day for return to in person learning for san francisco public schools. if you're 65 and up and live in san francisco, you can walk in for a covid-19 vaccine. this was shared on twitter. you can drop in to get a shot 9:00 to 3:00 at sf general hospital. this will be available until tuesday. starting tuesday, ride free going to or from a covid vaccination site. part of the city's effort to ket as veenlt asvaccine. that's something to keep in mind as well. meantime, oakland teachers and staff got their covid vaccines in the first mobile fema vaccine site.

governor newsom visited the site yesterday as he and other state leaders push to resume in person learning by spring. the superintendent of oakland unified says this is one of many things needed to make that happen. >> it is the intent, it is the priority for us to open our schools as safely as possible and having vaccination and access to vaccination is a critical component. >> other teachers in the county will continue to be vaccinated at the oakland coliseum. governor newsom said he would set aside 10% of the state's next allocation of vaccine for teachers. today is the last day to get your vaccine shot drive through style at the alameda fairgrounds. it opened the first time this week, running wednesday to saturday i pleasanton. the site is split into lanes based on how you signed up, either through your health care provider or the county website. keep in mind, appointments are

required. it is open for alameda county residents only, open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. take a look at this winter weather slamming parts of the country. now delaying vaccine shipments into california. ice and snow disrupting operations at major fedex and ups hubs. fedex is rerouting deliveries through a sorting hub to speed things up. some bay area counties had to cancel or reschedule hundreds of vaccination appointments. >> we did hear from one of our pharmacy partners that they had to cancel about 500 vaccine doses because the vaccine couldn't come through and we didn't have extra to give them. >> contra costa, santa clara, napa counties are all facing disruptions. berkeley officials are missing a bunch of vaccines. san francisco said the supply is inconsistent and limited. new developments, pfizer says the covid-19 vaccine can be

stored in regular lab freezers instead of ultra cold freezers . in addition, a new study finds a single dose of vaccine is 85% effective. >> reporter: in the freezer are the last 390 pfizer covid-19 vaccines in marine county. the man making sure the freezers don't break, rudy kahne. >> the vaccine is obviously precious, we have two freezers, a primary which has vaccine and then a backup in case something goes wrong. >> reporter: if the pfizer request is approved, it would mean the vaccine could be transported to more places without the need of the specialized freezers. the administrative director of pharmacy services believes this temperature change will expedite

the distribution process. could this have a negative impact on vaccine efficacy? >> not negative impact. >> reporter: it does shorten shelf life. >> historically with those low temperatures, as long as six months standard freezer environment. >> reporter: a new study found one shot of the pfizer vaccine is 85% effective at preventing symptomatic covid-19. >> since shelf life is going to decrease, do you predict counties will go through the first batch of pfizer doses as soon as possible rather than storing them for people who are waiting for the second dose? >> theoretically possible. i believe with our current state of vaccination efforts in california we really are trying to exhaust vaccines as fast as we can. >> reporter: and hope to increase vaccine supply, president biden visited pfizer's assembly line in michigan where the company is promising to produce batches in half the time

upper elevations will get gusty winds today. elsewhere feels cooler. upper 50s to near 60 with northwesterly winds. it will be climbing through the low 60s about 3:00, but that should do it for us for the warming. more warmth under second half of the weekend. winds subside this evening. we will put it together in the full forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you. this morning, frozen icy weather is effecting the speed of vaccination efforts. alex brochette is in washington. >> reporter: this morning, the u.s. closing in on a half million covid-19 deaths. many states are struggling with the biggest weapon against the virus, vaccinations. winter weather wreaking havoc on distribution efforts. the white house says 6 million doses delayed, impacting all 50 states and ant backlog doses will be delivered within

the next week. for this 71-year-old in washington, frustration is an understatement. >> it is a nightmare. >> reporter: she secured a va earlier this week and then it cancelled. >> worked so hard, takes awhile it is really tough when you're told well, you're going to start over again. >> reporter: in los angeles, cars bumper-to-bumper outside dodgers stadium. nearly 12,500 vaccine hopefuls striking out, their doses delayed. >> i am 66 years old, i have two young kids at home. this is super important to me. >> reporter: president biden traveled to kalamazoo touring a pfizer facility. starting next week, new assembly lines will be able to produce 700,000 doses per hour. pfizer saying its vachich below zero can now be scored in regular freezers for up to two

weeks. new admissions declined. president biden won't commit a date when the crisis will end. >> i believe we'll be approaching normalcy by the end of this year and god willing this christmas will be different than last. but i can't make that commitment to you. >> reporter: yesterday, he pledged $4 billion to help vaccine efforts in countries around the world. the white house coronavirus task force is pushing the timeline back for elementary school students until after january, 2022. based on when research trials for children are expected to finish up. a small astra-zeneca trial involving 300 kids in the uk as young as six years old is just beginning. pfizer, moderna, johnson & johnson are expected to start trials for the younger group in the spring. some parents are worried about vaccine safety. >> to me, i believe they came up with this method of vaccine too soon.

i am just not a believer. >> uncomfortable having them going to school, but definitely would be interested in getting them vaccinated as soon as it is available. >> some doctors say immunizing children may be important for herd immunity, it shouldn't be prerequisite for returning to happening today, a fundraiser for good, good eats that bridges divides between the black and asian communities. participants learn to make chinese dumplings. an organizers said it was inspired by feelings of helplessness and anger over recent attacks in chinatown. >> this is to create an environment in which we are fueled by the anger we all felt because of the attacks and increased racism and tension between two communities. but put it into a place we all share a space together in the spirit of unity, cooking together and eating together.

>> i have my book, too. >> yay! >> give me an idea of what this book is about in a nutshell. >> yes, chinatown pretty is a celebration of seniors in chinatown and their street style. >> we started the project around 2014. we set out to understand, you know, where did they get the amazing shoes, what do they do on a day-to-day basis. >> we interviewed them about their life stories and about their outfit. >> were these planned outfits or were they just kind of everyday wear for them? >> i think we learned function informs everything first. so keeping warm, means a puffy jacket or two or three, sometimes a hat. a lot of people are leaving in clothes they brought from hong kong combined with clothes they made at seam stresses combined with hats from grandkids which made for the patch work called

chinatown pretty. >> there were some people, others that stood out to you, ones that warmed your heart or elicited a very emotional response? >> yeah. there's the tailor in new york. the outfit wasn't loud, neither was he. when we looked closer, he had sewn half inch extensions on sleeves, or two caps, meshed them together to make it warmer, more customized to his liking. he said one day the sun will set on you, one day you'll grow old too. thank you for taking time to speak to seniors. you'll be in my shoes someday soon. >> one of the most special people we met was dorothy. she was born and bred in chinatown. came to one of the art shows, has become our friend. a big inspiration not only in fashion but as an activist. >> i love polka dot. i met her on the street, she was wearing pot holders and a rice bag. i was like what is this, and she

started telling me about it. she was very forthcoming, so cool. just totally not what i expected. her history is pretty amazing. >> do you think the seniors can teach us about style? >> i think one of the biggest take aways is not to care as much. that was something andrea said once, i kind of learned to kind of let go, wear what i want, even if it doesn't match exactly. for me i wore all black throughout my 20s. now i'm like you, i have a colorful closet. i kind of have a rainbow and patterns. did grandma wear this? if the answer is yes, i would likely wear it too. >> we getuay abt age,aybe yo with grandparents that see their grandparents in the book. literally it is sometimes their

have a great weekend. i am larry beil. >> it would be nice to be in tahoe, lisa. it is pretty too. it is. there's not only some sun but a few flakes of snow leftover. we'll show you this amazing shot in a moment. as we look at visible imagery, you can see clouds from east bay and south bay. it will take towards afternoon that we completely dry out. there still are random sprinkles out there, certainly some wind. you see from the sierra, nevada to south bay, this is where we have just a little moisture out there. and live look. this is downtown where temperatures are on the cool side and it is breezy. if you want a warmer day, wait iansc 55e at 50, as well as half moon bay. golden gate bridge, shaky camera here. temperatures at the coast are only in the mid-50s, winds gusting sometimes at 40 miles

per hour. 50 in santa rosa, 54 in novato. 50 in livermore. here's a look at the winds along the coast, anywhere from 13 miles per hour to 23 miles per hour, half moon bay. you can see some landing problems at sfo with winds gusting over 30 miles per hour. over into the east bay, breezy through the afternoon. not as windy as in upper elevations and at the coast. you can see 36 miles per hour wind gusts, mount diablo. this is the perfect picture of lake tahoe. no filter needed. natural beauty here. gorgeous. temperatures are around freezing. back home, partly cloudy this morning. sunny, gusty winds in upper elevations and hills. looking for warmer weather by about six degrees tomorrow pretty much everywhere except the coast, even warmer with 70s for monday and tuesday. 10:00, look point

it is gusty at the coast. 3:00, 4:00, it is bre keephat in mind. you need the jacket by tonight. a cold night because winds back off. as we look at parts of the east bay, today, low 60s. should see about 60 tomorrow, up to 69, 71 on monday. how about 75 tuesday. we get slightly cooler, and unfortunately we stay dry through the rest of the week, the rest of the month, and who knows what march will bring. but it is way too late to catch up in terms of rainfall. we'll have a cool and breezy afternoon with mid-50s, half moon bay, upper 50s downtown. 62 in oakland. 60 in san jose. the accuweather seven-day forecast, the winds with us today, adding to a bit of a chill. warming begins tomorrow, more like spring on monday and tuesday. cooler wednesday. the winds are going to be a factor above a thousand feet later in the week.
