years since the 1918 influenza pandemic. >> the time line of deaths charted by "the new york times" on the paper's front page today, each of those tiny dots representing the lives lost. you can see the staggering toll in just the last three months. president joe biden is expected to make remarks to commemorate the tragic milestone tomorrow, along with a moment of silence and a candle light and ceremony. doctors say we could be in for months more of covid precautions, especially now with new variants. but in california, some doctors say they are seeing some positive signs. abc7 news reporter luz pena spoke to the chief of the emergency department at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital about declining cases. >> reporter: after a devastating year and three covid surges, today the chief of zuckerberg san francisco general hospital is feeling hopeful. when would you say was that moment you realized that cases were going down? >> it was ten days ago, and it

was a shift that i did in the emergency department. >> reporter: today governor gavin newsom confirming cases are also going down statewide, pointing to a month ago when there were 20,000 covid-19 cases reported. today 6,760. positivity rate was 9.3% a month ago. today 3.1%. hospitalizations are also down 41% and 38% in the i.c.u. dr. caldwell has gone from seeing multiple covid-19 cases per shift to this. >> three and one part of that was even less than that. so really it's been a dramatic decrease. >> reporter: but what's driving this decline? it turns out there are multiple factors. >> first and foremost, we're through the holiday, new year's time period when we saw a lot of social gatherings. we are also abiding by the precautions. we're maintaining social distancing. the combined effect of those

that have now in our community who have had covid-19 and have some immunity based on that, and those are now being vaccinated. >> reporter: according to the latest state data, 1.9 million kflz ha californians have been vaccinated. a change in behavior will add to the declining cases. >> i am happy to wear masks longer, not that i like it, but i'm happy to. >> reporter: we're getting close. so what's your projection? when do you think we'll be able to say we are out of the woods? >> we should expect that we will have everybody vaccinated by the end of july. >> reporter: dr. caldwell says we still need to be cautious, as multiple variants are circulating the bay area. but he says he's hopeful. as more people get vaccinated, he believes the numbers will continue to go down. in san francisco, luz pena, abc7 news. >> the governor updated the state's vaccination effort today. he toured this pop-up site in

englewood. the governor says the state is bringing the vaccine to minority communities where fewer people have access to cars and public transit. the problem is having enough vaccines. >> we're now moving, turning the proverbial page in the direction we all were hoping for, waiting for. we still have some challenges. march, april with scarcity of vaccine, but we move into may, june and july, we're in a completely different place. >> meantime the governor says the state is dedicating $4.6 billion for learning loss kids suffered through distance learning. >> is it more after school, more summer school? are we going to extend the school year which is likely for some districts. are we going to do more for peer support, more for wellness, mental health? >> he says that will be up to lcal school districts. and without offering any details, he said in the next few weeks, more businesses will be able to reopen with modifications on a much larger scale.

north bay residents lined up in their cars today to get that long-awaited covid vaccine. as a new drive-thru clinic opened in lark steph curry, abc7 news cornell barnard explains. vaccines are rebounding after te storm caused around the country. >> reporter: the weight was finally over for terry balik. >> i'm excited. >> reporter: she was first in line sunday at a new drive-thru covid vaccine clinic at the larks berry terminal. >> you can see i have 50 masks, hand sanitizers and shields. >> reporter: this clinic by appointment only, pfizer vaccine doses were put in the arms of marin county residents 56 and older. >> i've been waiting. i'm 66 1/2. i thought i should get it. >> this is my fourth try. >> reporter: dominic said she's been at the mercy of vaccine supply. >> i did some walk-ins. they weren't doing it.

waited, no more vaccine. so keeping our fingers crossed. >> reporter: vaccine shipments have been delayed by extreme weather across the nation. some appointments canceled or postponed. but supply is slowly catching up. >> the fact we're able to open the site is a good indication the supply is increase being week to week. it's a sign we will be able to open more tiers soon. >> reporter: sonoma county is expanding its vaccine reach. folks 65 and older including restaurant and grocery store workers are eligible f shot when you can schedule an appointment still depends on supply. officials say a 5,000 dose shipment of the moderna vaccine is expected monday or tuesday. back in lark spur, gary is one step closer to feeling confident. >> it's a sense of relief actually. i'm just looking forward to my second shot. >> reporter: we're told appointments are booked through next thursday here. this clinic on track to vaccinate 400 people today. soon they hope to ramp up to

2,000 shots per day as long as they can get the supply. in lark spur, cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> abc7 news is monitoring the covid vaccine rollout in california with our vaccine tracker. our tracker also compares our state's progress with the rest of the country. you can find it at our website, abc7news.com. new developments now. san francisco school board is putting a pause on the overshal renaming of board president gabriella said she takes responsibility for mistakes in the naming process. the board said they would delay the renaming plan after students return to classrooms for in-person learning. the project faced widespread criticism because, in part, the committee that advised the school board got the facts wrong. lopez said the board would reach out to local university historians for input.

to the peninsula now where the san carlos unified school district will start in-person learning tomorrow. it will go in phases starting with kindergarten and first grade students, then second and third grades in a couple of weeks. and then 4th and 5th grades in the middle of march. when the district moves into the red tier they will address 6th and 8th grade students. what about the rest of the districts? state lawmakers want schools open no later than april 15. governor newsome said that's not good enough. abc7 news insider spoke with assemblyman phil ten on abc7 mornings today. >> what is the difference between your plan and the governor's plan? where do you see the difference? >> i think the differences are very, very slight. we've been getting feedback. he wanted us to go faster. he wanted to focus originally on k through 2 grades, making sure they were fully open.

new at 11:00, a traveling nurse who moved to san francisco less than 24 hours ago to care for covid patients had something very precious stolen from her.

kathleen pulking took her dogs for a walk along pine street in knob hill this morning. and 45 minutes later she says she returned home to find her mini van broken into. her work bag was gone along with something very valuable to her inside. she left a note in the window explaining what happened. >> and inside was the litman stethoscope that my grandmother gave me when i graduated from nursing school. she's passed away since then. i mean, it's irreplaceable. i have literally carried that on every shift i've worked, critical care, e.r. and i.c.u. 16 years. i really hope i get it back and my stethoscope, you know. it's irreplaceable. >> you really feel for her. kathleen's landlord had even sking if anyone sees the

olive colored bag with the cleveland clinic logo on it would please contact police. this amazing sight, a 141-year-old victorian home that was moved six blocks. it practically looked like a parade with hundreds of people who took to the streets to watch the ordeal. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone was out there and has reaction from spectators. >> reporter: nothing to see here. just a 141--year-old victorian home coming down franklin street in san francisco. >> this is phenomenal to see this humongous seven-bedroom house being moved. >> it's amazing. >> it's a beautiful building. >> reporter: that historic building took san francisco and the internet by storm. every angle being recorded by hundreds of san co coitmovie "up." it was towed six blocks in

around six hours. >> there is' been a few glitches along the way, trees that were in the way, stop signs and lights and signs and whatnot. >> they hit a light pole at the corner of golden gate and franklin. also they hit a couple of trees. >> reporter: no worries because tree cutters were in place. streets were closed and police were there to lead the way. even if things didn't look so perfect, even as crews worked into the nighttime hours. moving a house hasn't happened in san francisco since 1974. you can see the hundreds of people who came out to watch. >> i was scared when they were trying to turn on golden gate street. i was surprised. i was like, there's no way, but they got it through. >> reporter: the englander house which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to move will be turned into single-family units. a former mortuary next door will also be transformed into housing between 50 and 60 new units will eventually be available because of the move. along with, of course, the historic home being restored and

saved. >> i was up on the 11th floor at the time looking down and i could not believe what was going down. i thought, this is one for the history books. j.r. stone abc7 news. >> what a monumental undertaking. while some want to keep the ferris wheel in golden gate bridge, some can't wait to see it go. it was installed as part of the 150th anniversary but was postponed because of the pandemic. some officials want to keep it until march of 2025. but a group called san franciscans for urban nature said the bright lights will negatively affect the night owls. >> we have a strobe light and it's strobing out toward the owls at strawberry hill. very close. and it will keep the owls away.

>> the city's rec and park board plan to vote on what to do at their meeting next month. all right. getting to the weather situation, drew tuma joining us. if you want to get on the ferris wheel, it's the week to do that. >> it is, dion. the next two days especially you're going to feel the warmer weather. warmer than we were, 10 degrees above where we should be this time of year. let's take it to sutro tower, a live look. clear skies, calm conditions from this vantage point. i do want to take you into our hills where we have a breeze especially in the north bay right now. above 1,000 feet the winds are active. out of the north, northeast you can see 20 to 25 miles an hour. it's keeping our temperatures elevated tonight compared to last night. you look at santa rosa. we're still in the mid 50s at 54

temperature. 72 the high in santa rosa. 71 in concord. this is way above where we should be this time of year. 66 san francisco, 69 oakland. 69 the high. future tracker temperatures, the numbers continue to climb into tuesday afternoon, in fact. you can see most of us away from the coast into the afternoon tuesday morning again, we still have gusty winds in the hills in it looks like as we go into wednesday, those winds might expand a bit, and most of us will be feeling some of this breeze. 5:00 wednesday evening we can see the northeasterly winds, anywhere from 15 to 35 miles per hour. so these winds will be on and off throughout the week and we'll keep an eye on them pretty closely. here's at the warming trend.

that critical moment at take-off when the plane was fighting to get into the air. the crew did an awesome job getting that plane safely onto the ground. >> ntsb investigators inspected the damage at the denver airport and they found two fractured fan blades on the engine. one of them broke off at the root. the department of justice has charged more than 200 people in connection with the deadly capitol hill riot. the man who would lead that investigation as attorney general is merrick garland. his confirmation hearings begin this week. now, this wouldn't be his first domestic terrorism case. he supervised the d.o.j.'s investigation into the oklahoma city bombing in 1995. president biden announced garland as his pick for a.g. just a day after the capitol hill riot. >> the rule of law is not just some lawyer's turn of phrase. it is the very foundation of our democracy. >> in 2016, when garland was nominated for the supreme court,

republicans said they wouldn't hold a hearing in an election year. tomorrow he will come before some of the same lawmakers during his confirmation. malcolm x's family have released a letter they say was written by new york under cover officer claiming that the n.y.p.d. and the fbi were behind his assassination. that letter was written by new york under cover officer raymond wood on his death bed. in it he claims his supervisors pressured him into making sure two key members of malcolm x's security team were arrested. the arrests left no door security at the building where malcolm x was killed. here is woods' cousin reading from that letter. >> under the direction of my handlers, i was told to encourage leaders and members of the civil rights groups to commit felonious acts. >> wood wrote that he carried the secret with a heavy heart. three men were convicted of his murder. the manhattan district

meals from businesses in most need in light of the pandemic. so empowering our black owned businesses to be part of the process. >> over the summer warriors wars forward spoke up during the protest of george floyd. >> being hopeful, use being our platform, proud to be black. challenging people to see things from a different lens. >> i think it's a crucial element of our society, everybody learning about black history. >> black girl magic is exactly what it sounds like. >> throughout the month the warriors released videos like this one, highlighting black girl magic. >> black girls are magical. to me they make this world go. i'm so glad to come from a black woman, i have a black wife and i have two black daughters. >> it's representation and giving young girls to know that
