should the cherokee name be dropped? from the wild chase on the beach to the goat causing chaos on the highway, to a very different way to get dressed. all the trending stories for your tuesday morning. good tuesday morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm kenneth moton. >> i'm shirleen allicot. mona is off today. we begin with new details about that midair square for people on a united airlines flight over colorado. >> investigators have revealed new evidence from that engine explosion which came minutes after takeoff. new images showed extensive damage to the plane. the uk has become the latest country to ban boeing 777s equipped with the same engine. this morning, investigators looking into what caused this engine to explode over colorado are zeroing in on a weakened piece of metal. new images released from the ntsb shows the damage to the

plane including a gaping hole under the wing suggesting some of the debris struck the plane itself. >> there were also dings and nicks in other places on the wing, but there was no structural damage. >> reporter: another image shows what investigators believe caused it. two broken fan blades in the engine. the emergency on the united flight from denver to hawaii started four minutes after takeoff. according to the ntsb's preliminary investigation, a fan blade broke off tearing into an adjacent blade and investigators say the first blade to separate showed signs of metal fatigue. >> with the metal fatigue you're usually going to find what i will describe as marks. it will be a series of marks that you can visibly see oftentimes with the naked eye. once you put it under a scanning electron microscope, you can actually count the number of cycles since the initiation of that fatigue. >> reporter: the broken pieces of the metal blades considered key pieces of evidence have now

been recovered. one of them was lodged inside the plane's engine. the other fell onto a neighborhood soccer field. overnight the ntsb said the blades were transported on a private flight to the engine maker pratt & whitney's lab in connecticut where pratt & whitney is coordinating with regulators. the ntsb says the agency will compare saturday's incident to other emergencies in the past which have involved that same model engine. >> we are in the business of determining probable cause. we do not determine liability. we want to find out what happened so that we can issue recommendations to keep it from happening again. >> united airlines has ground its other boeing 777s with the same engine. the faa has ordered more inspections. a delta flight from atlanta to seattle had to make an emergency landing in utah last night after reports of possible engine trouble. it is the third engine related issue on a boeing plane in three days. this time it was a boeing 757. the problem was described as a mechanical issue.

we turn now to the pandemic and new research on re-opening schools and the risk teachers may pose to students. also this morning, new details about johnson & johnson's single dose vaccine, which could win emergency approval friday. abc's ike ejiochi is here now with the very latest. good morning to you, ike. >> reporter: good morning, shirlene and kenneth. johnson & johnson is out with the time line for its vaccine and if the company keeps to its promise we'll have many more vaccines available soon. this morning, new hope in the race to vaccinate america. johnson & johnson, which is waiting for fda emergency authorization for its single dose vaccine, says it could deliver 20 million doses by the end of march. if true, combined with the other vaccines, the u.s. would have enough doses in five weeks to vaccinate about half of all

americans in the country. >> if we can see 20 million doses by the end of march that will add to our supply which will give us more than enough vaccines to get 300 million americans vaccinated by hopefully the end of summer which gets us closer to our target herd immunity. >> reporter: in new york some vaccines have been deemed ineffective after a mishap. a staffer at a jones beach vaccination site added a hand warmer to a cooler and now dozens of people will have to get revaccinated. in the battle to re-open schools a new report from the cdc suggests its teachers, not students, who play a central role in spreading covid in the classroom. >> covid-19 spread often occurred in in-person meetings and subsequent spread in classrooms. >> reporter: the national cathedral rang its bells for nearly one hour marking 500,000 u.s. deaths from covid. the bells rang for every 1,000 death. ringing once for every death would have taken 28 days. president biden and the first lady leading a moment of silence before the president addressed the nation drawing on his own experience with grief.

>> the day will come when the memory of the loved one you lost will bring a smile to your lips before a tear to your eye and for me the way through sorrow and grief is to find purpose. >> reporter: but this morning positive signs as infections and hospitalizations drop. new york is planning to re-open movie theaters at reduced capacity, and in missouri this hospital now celebrating posting a picture of its nearly empty covid unit. and researchers in the lab in alabama are developing a covid vaccine in the form of a nasal spray. human trials begin next week. kenneth. >> as you said, more positive signs there, ike, thank you. a frightening scene, three children injured when a car slammed through a wall and into a classroom. the kids were flown to a hospital as a precaution. no major injuries were reported. witnesses say the driver may have mistakenly stepped on the gas instead of the brake. the driver was cited for not having a license. an independent investigation

has found police in aurora, colorado, had no legal basis to stop a 23-year-old man who later died in their custody. the confrontation back in 2019 was caught on camera. >> hey, stop right there. stop. stop. >> i have the right -- >> stop. stop. i have a right to stop you because you're being suspicious. >> reporter: mcclain, an african-american man, was walking home from a convenience store and was not armed. he went into cardiac arrest after he was subdued by officers and given ketamine, a sedative. the investigation by the city council found paramedics gave him too much ketamine. he weighed only 140 pounds. mcclain's parents want the officers held accountable. >> it matters that he can no longer be labeled a suspect. >> elijah mcclain mosley was loved. he's missed and hopefully we get justice for him. >> the officers have not been charged. the city council's report also called the department's investigation flawed.

aurora police have not commented on the report. the supreme court denied a last-ditch effort from former president trump to block the release of his tax records. in a matter of days his accountants could turn over eight years of his personal and corporate taxes to the manhattan d.a. they could be presented to a grand jury but the public may never see them. the d.a. requested the records as part of an investigation involving hush money payments to women. attorney general nominee merrick garland assured senators at his confirmation hearing monday that he will be politically independent. garland vowed to make the investigation into the attack on the u.s. capitol his top priority, and he got emotional as he reflected on the discrimination that his family faced before coming to the u.s. >> i come from a family where my grandparents fled anti-semitism and persecution. the country took us in, protected us, and i feel an obligation to the country to pay

back, and so i want very much to be the kind of attorney general that you're saying i could become, and i'll do my best to try to be that kind of attorney general. >> garland is expected to be confirmed within days. this morning millions in texas are still without safe drinking water more than a week after the extreme winter weather hit. some people haven't had water since last thursday. one woman told us she's collecting water in a trash can. a special relief fund has been established in houston to help people pay for water bills and home repairs. and here's a bizarre sight. this louisiana family dealing with power and water outages decided to bathe their children in a giant seafood boiler outside their home. >> doing what they have to do. let us take a look now at your tuesday morning weather. most of the weather action is in the northern half of the country. blizzard and high wind warnings are in effect from washington and oregon to montana.

after florida's atlantic coast. a group of cuban immigrants rescued after 16 days at sea. this video shows the moment their boat capsized in the heavy surf. two pregnant women were in that group, but everyone survived. their fate will eventually be determined by u.s. immigration officials. the wife of mexican drug lord el chapo guzman is due in court in washington today. the former beauty queen arrested at dulles airport in virginia accused of helping her husband run his drug ring and helping to coordinate his escape from a mexican prison in 2015. el chapo was tried in the u.s. and sentenced to life in prison. police say the man wanted in connection with the murder of a yale university grad student stole an suv from a car dealership in massachusetts before fleeing. they say qinxuan pan took the vehicle for a test drive and never came back. he was last seen in georgia. police say he was a history -- he has a history of mental illness. the mother of the victim, 26-year-old kevin jiang, spoke

through a translator. >> translator: kevin was my beloved only child. last saturday evening when the police told me he was shot, my first reaction was, this cannot be real. >> a $10,000 reward is offered in the case. police said the motive may stem from a road rage incident. the leader of the cherokee nation wants the tribe's name removed from the popular suv made by jeep. the automaker has used the name for decades but chief chuck hoskin says it's time to retire those names. jeep's parent company said hoskin does not condone the use of cherokee, but no word in the company plans a change. it comes after changes in pro sports with washington's football team and cleveland's baseball team eliminating native american imagery. a runaway goat. authorities spent part of yesterday chasing it down interstate 4 in tampa. it was eventually trapped and driven away.

a police chase in miami beach sent people in this park running for cover. officers were chasing a stolen vehicle. some of the suspects managed to bail out, but a 15-year-old was arrested. there's been another deadly mishap during a gender reveal party. a 28-year-old father-to-be died when a device he was building for a baby shower exploded. another man was injured. the device was reportedly made from some kind of pipe. earlier this month a michigan man was killed from shrapnel from a cannon used at a gender reveal party. a new warning from police about men targeting girls online. here's abc's megan tevrizian. >> reporter: this morning a warning to parents with kids at home learning remotely after two girls were abducted by men they had met online. the first in north carolina involving a 14-year-old. >> we found out that miss childress was using her school computers to text and use these

different platforms to text the perpetrator, mr. william ice. >> reporter: police say 38-year-old william ice abducted the teen taking her 700 miles to arkansas before authorities finally caught up with him over the weekend. >> we felt like the more information that we give out about him that the more danger we would cause to savannah. >> reporter: when confronted by police, they say ice opened fire critically wounding one officer before turning the gun on himself. the teen was not harmed. >> i'm just glad she's found. i mean, you know, the entire community all came together looking for her. >> reporter: meanwhile, northeast of orlando, florida, a deputy is being hailed a hero after rescuing a 13-year-old tracking her down at a motel. >> sheriff's office, back up. >> reporter: police body camera video showing the deputy walking in on 22-year-old tyler thompson shirtless. when the deputy arrived the teenager ran into his arms
