for the latest, here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: this mangled suv -- >> we have a rollover with someone trapped. >> reporter: upside down in the brush. the aftermath of an accident involving one of the world's most well-known humans, tiger woods. at 7:12 a.m. this morning outside los angeles, woods is said to have flipped his car in a single-vehicle accident. he was the only one in the car. >> we arrived on scene and discovered a solo vehicle collision and the sole occupant was, again, tiger woods. deputies at the time, they did not see any evidence of impairment, anything of concern. >> reporter: first responders on the scene removing woods from the vehicle through the front windshield. you can see the workers hooking that suv up to that wrecker. the front of that vehicle is completely accordioned. just a mass of crushed metal. >> a tube used for prying and an

ax was also used to pry the person free from the vehicle. >> i asked him what his fame was. he told me his name was tiger. at that moment i recognized him. i asked him if he knew where he was. what time of day. just to make sure he was oriented. he seemed as though he was lucid and calm. i will say it's very fortunate that mr. woods was able to come out of this alive. >> reporter: in a statement posted to his twitter, tiger's team saying he is awake, responsive, and recovering in the hospital after having surgery to fix open fractures affecting both bones in his lower right leg, needing a rod to stabilize, and injuries to his foot and ankle that required pins and screws. >> the time it crossed the center divider to the point it arrested was several hundred feet away. so i would say that indicates they were going at a relatively greater speed than normal. >> the authorities have said now, there was a press conference, apparently tiger woods was going quite quickly, and as he was going to a photo

shoot at a golf course, a two-day photo shoot. it sounds like he was very lucky he wasn't hurt worse. multiple injuries to both legs is not good. not good for anyone, certainly not good for a golfer. >> reporter: woods was in southern california as the host of last week's genesis invitational golf tournament. yesterday images on twitter showed him giving lessons to actor david spade and former basketball player dwyane wade as part of a shoot for "golf digest" and golf tv. >> i say the goat, he's not comfortable with it, but i have opportunity to come out here with this guy right here, man. >> reporter: his stature of a cultural icon on the golf course and off is hard to measure. as news of the accident reverberated across twitter, the messages from fans, fellow athletes, celebrities, began pouring in. the accident could be yet another major setback in a storied career. >> there it is! a win for the ages! >> reporter: tiger's life has been filled with the highest of highs, winning the masters at

just 21 years old -- youngest ever to do so -- and before long, he seemed to take over the sports world, becoming the only player to win four consecutive major pro golf titles, known now as the tiger slam. >> you have to remember that tiger woods isn't an athlete, he's a business. look at the numbers when tiger woods is playing in a tournament versus when tiger woods is not in a tournament. tiger woods isn't a golfer, tiger woods is golf. >> reporter: but all those highs also came with some of the lowest of lows. over the years, tiger has become a magnet for what seemed self-destructive behavior. >> tiger woods has had a lot of episodes that have made tmz fodder. >> reporter: the squeaky-clean image began to clack with this now infamous scene from 2009. >> it turned out the car accident had been at the end of

his driveway. he'd run into a fire hydrant and a tree. that bizarre incident triggered a scandal the likes of which we have rarely seen in sports. >> reporter: it set off a tidal wave of negative publicity for tiger, who became embroiled in an infidelity scandal, leading to his divorce. >> that was the downfall of tiger woods, all self-induced. a personal scandal that ended his marriage and really threatened his family, and changed the perception of tiger for many, many people. >> reporter: while managing to mask the troubles through his triumphs, tiger's decline over the years became more apparent. he continues to accumulate injuries, notably four back surgeries. each one seeming to put his career in jeopardy. but then in 2019, after years of setbacks, the comeback of a lifetime. >> it's been a lot. the body, the game, life. it just all evolved and it all moves forward. >> he went from being the guy the country hated to the guy the country loved.

and who doesn't love a winner? >> reporter: it was a comeback that seemed to transcend the sport. a father embracing his son on the course, just as he had 22 years earlier, same venue, similar red shirt, tiger the prodigy embraced by his father. >> they only know me as dad. they saw all the tough times. they didn't realize how much that golf meant to me in my life and all the good times, because they only saw that golf hurt, hurt their dad. but thankfully, the last couple of years have certainly evolved and changed, and they've seen the joy that the game of golf brings me. >> i think people really appreciate what they've seen out of him in the last four or five years. to see that he's let a lot of people in. >> reporter: professional golfer and longtime friend andy north says this chapter was something to celebrate. >> he's been great with the kids. he's done so many wonderful things on and off the golf course for people.

i think that's one of the coolest things of where we've seen him come, from his early 20s to now into his 40s, the growth and the maturity that we've seen out of tiger. >> reporter: maturing mentally but continuing to decline physically. just last month, tiger sharing he had undergone his fifth back surgery procedure to alleviate nerve pain in his lower back. this past sunday in an interview with cbs' jim nance, tiger revealed how his recovery was going. >> everybody wants to know how you're feeling, how you're doing since your fifth back operation. feeling all right? >> i'm feeling fine. a little bit stiff. >> we exchanged texts a couple of weeks ago after it came out that he'd had the fifth back surgery. he seemed in a really good place. he thought things had gone really well, he was really excited to get back after it. >> reporter: it is not clear if we will ever hear the legendary tiger roar on the 18th hole at augusta again. but if we've ever learned anything about tiger woods, it's

"don't bet against him." >> forget about golf, golf has nothing to do with this anymore. this is about a guy's life, living the rest of your life where you can go out and play with your kids and hopefully grandkids someday. tiger's a very, very strong guy, we know that. he will attack this like he has every other one of his surgeries. and hopefully he can play some good golf in the future. but if he doesn't, he's given us more than you could ever expect. >> our thanks to matt. soul searching at "bachelor" nation after calls for racial awareness coming from the bachelor himself. it was s it was supposed to be the racial breakthrough season with the first black bachelor. instead the show's host, chris harrison, facing backlash for racial insensitivity. will the show shown for finding love be able to conquer hate? the juggernaut "bachelor" franchise under fire from an unlikely source. >> matt james. >> what's going on, chris? >> reporter: its own star. matt james, the first black bachelor, saying the franchise has fallen short on the issue of race. >> ladies, get up here, get your trophy! >> reporter: after the show's host, chris harrison, seemed to defend racist behavior. >> we have to be so careful when we start labeling people. it's just as bad as what that person did. >> reporter: the matt james announcement a groundbreaking reveal. 25 seasons in the making. the 29-year-old commercial real estate executive a step forward for the show, where season after season after season after season

showcased white bachelors and mostly white potential paramours. we spoke to matt just before the season kicked off. why do you think it took so long? >> you know what, i don't know. i can't speak on what took place before i got there. but i was honored to be the first, and hopefully the first of many. >> reporter: in our january interview, matt said he hoped to represent progress. >> i'm hoping that, as the years go on and there's another black bachelor, asian bachelor, a person of color bachelor, it's "that person's a great bachelor." >> reporter: but that progress suffered a setback when these three years old photos of contestant rachael kirkconnell at an old south antebellum-themed party complete with costumes went viral. >> an antebellum-themed party is offensive, insensitive, and it is a profoundly racist act. it is making a mockery out of one of the most painful, horrific moments in human

history that is american slavery. >> reporter: chris harrison, "bachelor" host, came to her defense, along with rachel lindsay, who in 2017 was the first-ever black bachelorette. >> it's not a good luck. >> rachel, is it a good look in 2018 or not a good look in 2021? >> it's not a good look ever because she's celebrating the old south. if i went to that party what would i represent at that party? >> my guess, these girls dressed up, went to a party, had a great time, they were 18 years old. does that make it okay? i don't know, you tell me. >> reporter: the fallout for harrison, who like the show has become an institution, was swift. >> resign. >> reporter: social media exploding in outrage and defense. former contestants also voicing their disappointment. >> i think he for sure needs to do more than put out a statement. i am really, really disappointed. >> reporter: another bachelor alum calling on harrison to step down. >> let me speak direct. should that individual be removed from the "bachelor" franchise?

i think it's time for that. >> chris harrison made it sound as though the excuse was, she was so young, she was just in college. what do you make of that defense? >> this wasn't eons ago, it was 36 months ago. plenty of kids go to college and find a way not to be racist. >> reporter: harrison apologized writing on instagram, by excusing historical racism, i defended it. i am ashamed over how uninformed i was. i was so wrong. and he announced that he's stepping aside from the franchise for a period of time. last night, matt james releasing his own statement on instagram saying, it has been devastating and heartbreaking to put it bluntly. chris' failure to receive and understand the emotional labor that my friend rachel lindsay was taking on by graciously and patiently explaining the racist history of the antebellum south was troubling and painful to watch. it was the clear reflection of a much larger issue that the "bachelor" franchise has fallen short on addressing adequately for years.

as for kirkconnell, she's gotten cozy with the bachelor throughout this season. james taking her shopping, and on a horse-drawn carriage ride, making it through enough rose ceremonies to be among t >> will you accept this rose? >> yes. thank you. >> reporter: she's apologized for both the antebellum party photos and for liking photos with the confederate flag. on instagram she wrote, "i'm sure to say i was wrong, i didn't recognize how offensive and racist my actions were, but that doesn't excuse them, i was examp ignorant but my ignorance was racist." the "bachelor" franchise has long faced criticism for lack of diversity among its leads and contestants, even faced a class-action lawsuit that claimed the show discriminates against people of color. the case was eventually dismissed. >> i think what's hard is we are all linked and attached to this franchise. and you don't want to be attached to something that seems

to be so problematic when there seems to be so much that needs to still be done. >> alex, you ready? >> ready as i'll ever been. >> reporter: the "bachelor" franchise has been a pop culture phenomenon since it debuted in 2002. "the bachelorette" launched the following year. with harrison there every step of the way. >> we got the jib camera, we got two dozen people behind the cameras -- >> reporter: i visited a set in 2015. >> this is breathtaking. what does it say about us that we're so into it and that it has such longevity? >> no matter where you go in the world, there is one thing that is true, that is love and companionship. >> reporter: before harrison stepped aside i asked about the show's lack of diversity. >> what does it say about our culture? >> wow, that's a big question. i don't know what that says. i don't know. i'm a big fan of, it's never too late to do the right thing. and when that is done, that is good. >> what did you make of the fact

that 24 seasons of "the bachelor" featured a largely white cast? >> "the bachelor" is a symbol of the possibilities of love in this country, the possibilities and promise of love in america. when they're all white, it sends a signal of, who deserves to be desired? who deserves to be sought after? who deserves to be married? and that kind of narrative is deeply dangerous when there's simply not enough black people on there. >> rachael, will you accept this rose? >> i will. thank you. >> reporter: harrison told us optimistically in january, he hopes viewers look past race and see matt james as just another tall, handsome, eligible bachelor. >> yes, he is the first black bachelor. and i'm excited to get to the point of the season where nobody cares, it's just matt with some drama and some tears and we just forget the optics of it and we're just living our lives. that's when you know we've

actually taken a big step. >> do you think that added an extra level of pressure to you, to be the first black bachelor? >> the more you focus on how you were raised, what's important to you, and treating these women with respect, everything else falls into line. >> reporter: that diverse representation reflects a new racial consciousness and a changing america, where interracial romance is no longer taboo. >> what do you think that says about sort of us seeing, on our screens, interracial dating normalized? >> that's where i think we can do our part is that we just show that, it's not only okay, it's just fine. it's just normal. let's move on with our lives. this couple fell in love, good on them. there's much bigger fish to fry. when we get to the point that things don't matter, and i mean that in a good way, i think we've taken a big step. up next, turning 100 years young and proving the sky's the limit. >> all right, you guys, let's go
