variants. >> in morning pfizer and biontech launching a s variants.ay after moderna annou ad similar study. so far both companies say they vaccines are effective and do not need to be adjusted for new variants but scientists will looking into the developing variant-specific booster shots. this as researchers at columbia and cal tech say they found 80 cases of a new variant in new york city. they are not sure if it is more transmissible. yesterday the fda announced johnson and johnson's single dose vaccine is --. it is also effective against asymptomatic transmission. >> the vaccine provides a 74% protection against asymptomatic disease. this is important. because if you can prevent asymptomatic disease, then you will also reduce transmission.

>> the fda could also authorize the johnson and johnson vaccine as soon as tomorrow. the company says it could ship three to four million doses by next week. that is less than initial estimates but the u.s. is still on target to have enough doses for 400 million people this summer. kumasi. >> thank you jobina. developing news this morning. three bay area counties have reportedly suspended covid-19 vaccine supplies to one medical. after some staff members allowed people to cut the line. one medical tells abc news they fired several employees for their intentional disregard of eligibility requirements. san francisco's department of health sent a letter to one company to return. 270 viles or 1600 doses of the pfizer vaccine. the chronicle is reporting san mateo and alameda county have also asked for return doses.

the mount diablo unified school board approved a hybrid learning plan to bring elementary school kids back to the classroom for five hours a week. some parents don't think that is enough and they don't think this is happening soon enough. >> when are you guys planning to reopen. >> who runs this district. >> it is a complete joke. >> my opinion is we need to reopen sooner than later. kids are really suffering. >> the kind of course work that kindergarteners and first graders are supposed to be doing. this is not developmentally appropriate. he's six. you know it is completely ridiculous. >> reporter: the teachers union also had complaints saying the district needs to do more to keep employees safe. the district did announce they will be able to provide covid testing for students and teachers every two weeks. contra costa county is still in the purple tier. parents are hopeful that the

>> beforeke see what o forecasts looking li looking like for today. >> we'll start with the winds. relaxing but gusty. especially the highest saint helena. 38 in the's foothills. outside of 23 in fairfield we're manageable with sfo 12, san francisco 16 and everybody else less than 10 miles per hour. only one area still under a wind advisory and that is about an half hour in lake county, about 1500 feet where we could still have gusts out of the north up to 45 miles per hour. with the dry area in all this sunshine, temperatures average to a little bit above from 59-65 along the coast. 62 to 66 around the bay and about 66 to 70 inland. hope you like sunshine and the lack of rain. we've got it all the way through the seven-day forecast. we'll talk about that and the drought coming up.

kumasi? >> thank you. california has spazzed a sobering milestone in the pandemic. there have now been more than 50,000 people who have died from covid-19 in our state. this is according to johns hopkins university. and this comes as we are seeing a big drop in new cases and a downward trend in deaths. hospitalizations, are as well as transmission rates. we also have some encouraging news about the vaccines this morning. johnson and johnson's vaccine could be authorized for emergency use as soon as tomorrow. a new report from the fda shows that the one shot vaccine is safe and effective. the pfizer vaccine is shown to be 94% effective and a first real world study. the new study included more than half a million people who are vaccinated inial israel. and moderna says it has come up with a vaccine that may even protect against the south african variant. happening today. san francisco's mass vaccination site in moscone center is set to reopen. it was on pause last week because of lack of supply.

the site was set up to reopen monday. but that was delayed until today. officials say it will have first and second dose vaccines and will be open from 11:00 this morning to 5:00 p.m. the oakland coliseum vaccination site is giving out shots at maximum capacity. and that means they are now vaccinating 6,000 people a day. this is the only local site reaching its max. that is because this is a federal site so it is not subject to supply issues we're seeing in san francisco and other cities. fema and state officials opened the site about a week ago. and it is expected to stay open for at least eight weeks. >> abc news contributor dr. elope patel says we shouldn't be picky when it comes to which vaccine to get. he says getting a shot as soon as possible will help stop covid. >> get whatever compaction

happening today. animal advocates will demand a ban on the killing of cats at east bay parks. back in december an iteam

investigation found that east bay regional park district staff shot and killed at least 18 cats last year trying to protect endangered birds. that program was suspended days later. now the natural and cultural resources committee will meet today to discuss the issue. advocates are expected to urge the board for a full ban on lethal removals. san francisco could enter the state's red reopening tier by wednesday. in a tweet mr. breed said the city is seeing continued improvement if the required covid-19 health indicators. under the red tier more businesses could reopen indoors including gyms and restaurants. the mayor is reminding everyone this is not a sign to let our guard down. now this morning, public health officials urging gym goers to o bay the mask rules. after cdc showed high transmission rates among indoor fitness classes. one outbreak at a gym in chicago over the summer infected nearly
