the impact on vaccines. pfizer announcing they're talking to regulators about test their own variant specific booster offering a third dose to 144 clinical trial participants. moderna taking similar action, sending modified vaccines for the south african variant to the nih for testing, including a combination formula for those getting their first shots should that become necessary. and there is new hope on the horizon. johnson & johnson on the verge of adding a third vaccine in the u.s. this one shown to be effective against the variants. >> the vaccine provides very robust protection throughout the world including against the worrisome viral variants we've joso& hnson's ot be 100% effecta death, and early analysis hinting it may offer 70% protection against asymptomatic infections making those less likely to spread the disease. the fda meeting tomorrow and could give emergency use authorization as early as friday night.

>> if the j&j vaccine is approved it will provide an increase in vaccine supply to the u.s. and to the world and will accelerate the vaccine rollout. >> reporter: up to 4 million doses ready to ship right away, 20 million by the end of march. that's below earlier estimates. the white house saying it's working with johnson & johnson to speed up delivery. >> if authorized, we are ready to roll out this vaccine without delay. >> reporter: the nih also launching new research to study so-called long haulers, one-third of covid patients say they have persistent symptoms for months after contracting the virus. people like kaitlyn dennis, a former college athlete now on daily medication and fighting brain fog. >> some days i can go around the block but once you've crossed that line of it being too much, my body just shuts down and i'm in bed for a few days. >> reporter: now back to that new variant here in new york city, researchers say they've identified at least 80 cases across the tri-state area.

they also say that it shares a mutation in common with a variant from south africa and one from brazil but it is unique on its own and, again, will ?equire further investigation. >>y,hanks, w we are joined by dr. ashish jha. dean of the brown university school of public health. thanks for joining us, dr. jha. let's talk about the new york variant. how concern something it to you? >> yeah, good morning, george. thanks for having me on. we don't know much about it yet. i think we're going to see things like this. i'm not super concerned yet. we're learning about it. i remain optimistic our vaccines will work against it so i don't think we're at a point where we need to be excessively concerned. >> there is a lot of optimism over the johnson & johnson vaccine, single dose. we know it works well to prevent hospitalizations and deaths but doesn't score quite as effectively on preventing transmission as we've seen moderna and pfizer. what's your take on it? >> yeah, my take is at the end of the day this is a very, very good vaccine. i certainly would take it and

have my family members take it. as you said, it prevents hospitalizations and deaths. that's what we care about, and the bottom line is it's still quite effective at preventing regular infections but again the bottom line is hospitalizations and deaths and that's where it's excellent. >> what do we know about the effectiveness now of all the vaccines against the variants that are cropping up all over the world? >> yeah, i remain pretty optimistic. against the uk variant, these vaccines are very good. against any of the variants that have popped up from the united states they're very good. the one that has had some concern is the south african variant. the vaccines seem to still work pretty well. but we may need to at some point we'll o see.d update our ines. >>f people have a choice which vaccine should they take? >> i really think -- and i mean this, this is what i said to my family, people should get whatever vaccine is available and not worry about picking between all three of these excellent vaccines. >> you think whichever one you can get, whenever you can get it, you should get it. >> absolutely. absolutely. >> and how about the overall

situation right now? we're still seeing cases and hospitalizations and deaths come down. how much longer do you think we're going to have to have strict social distancing mask wearing? >> yeah, it's a very good question. my take is we still -- the uk variant is the one i'm still worried about, again mid to late march is when that's supposed to become dominant. we have to get through that. once we get into april, i hope that a lot of people have been vaccinated. the uk variant will not be dominating us in the same way and at that point i think we can really start making some decisions about relaxing a lot of the restrictions. >> relatively normal summer? >> yeah, relatively former summer. i'm really excited about it. >> that is reason for excitement. dr. jha, thanks for your time and information this morning. >> reason for excitement indeed, george. we'll turn to tiger woods. new details on that horrific crash as he recovered from serious injuries, and a black box-type device in the suv he was driving could help investigators. our chief national correspondent matt gutman joins us from

outside of the hospital in torrance, california, with the latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. that black box-like device can tell investigators how fast tiger woods was going, whether he tapped the brakes, the angle of his steering wheel even. right now the l.a. sheriff is saying he's not considering any charges against tiger woods. he's saying this was purely an accident. on wednesday, tiger woods' girlfriend erica herman seen visiting the legend as he recovers from the wreck that totalled his suv and mangled one of his legs. during emergency surgery a metal rod screws and pins were implanted to stabilize the bones in his shin, ankle and foot. >> the return to glory. >> reporter: as investigators try to determine the cause of this potentially career-destroying wreck, l.a. sheriff ruling out alcohol. >> this is purely an accident. there was no evidence of any impairment whatsoever. he was lucid.

no odor of alcohol. >> reporter: the sheriff adding there will be no charges. this is one of the few suburban streets you'll see with a runaway vehicle ramp. in fact, there are two of them and the sheriff of l.a. county calls it such a dangerous stretch of road that there have been 13 accidents here over the past 13 months, 4 of them with injuries. that stretch of road is so notorious late wednesday the county announced a safety review in an effort to make it safer. this new surveillance video obtained by tmz shows a vehicle that looks like tiger's driving in that same location just moments before the accident. now attention is turning to the car woods was driving. hyundai's new genesis gv-80 and how its safety features may have helped woods survive. the insurance institute for highway safety began its rigorous testing on the model putting it through this high impact crash. this exclusive first look showing the special safety features of the car. >> this particular vehicle has

not only side air bags, frontal air bags and then the rear seat protection, but it also has a center air bag and it really puts you in a cocoon. >> reporter: genesis confirming the car had a black box which can offer data on the speed it's driven, any braking and steering angles and which investigators say they'll examine to determine what caused the accident. but before the investigation is completed it's very likely he'll have to undergo additional surgeries. orthopedists tell us it's going to be a long road to recovery for him. s t dist inex. residents waters e governor ougeand rc moe is in arlington with more. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael.

take a look at this copper pipe. this is a one-inch water pipe. look at the go where we are and sent water spewing onto the ground for nine hours last week. there was two to eight inches of standing water inside the church building. this is the sanctuary here at st. john the apostle united methodist church. just an absolute mess and all of this started with massive power outages and overnight the governor pointing the finger in a statewide address. >> ercot repeatedly assured the state and the public that ercot was prepared. those assurances turned out to be false. >> reporter: overnight texas governor greg abbott announcing multiple investigations into the agency that manages 90% of the state's power grid. >> ercot must be overhauled. many of you are angry and you have a right to be. >> reporter: in a board meeting wednesday ercot's ceo bill

magnus said it was minutes away from a complete blackout. six members have resigned in the wake of the state's power crisis. critics highlighting several of those members live outside texas and are not affected by the outages. and now the travis county district attorney in austin also opening a criminal investigation into the power outages that caused so much devastation. the d.a. has not indicated whether the investigation would specifically target ercot. while most of the power has been restored and water boil notices lifted many residents are still not in the clear. just look at their water. houston public works has received 9,400 complaints about water that looks dirty and smells fishy. >> still dirty. >> reporter: the change is caused by algae that is seasonal and adding the drinking water continues to meet or exceed federal and state standards. others still don't have running water like this apartment in arlington, texas. residents forced to fill jugs from a hydrant. >> you have to go over there to fill up water.

otherwise you can't even flush the toilet. >> reporter: another look at the mess here at this arlington church. one of the other pressing issues is the high electricity bills some texans received. law makers are expected to hold hearings on that issue and the overall crisis later today. george? >> okay, marcus, thanks very much. let's go to washington now where the post master general is under fire from congress and the white house. he's apologized for slow mail delivery last year but defying calling to step down. rachel scott has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the head of the postal service, louis dejoy, made it clear he is not going anywhere telling wmakm now he did try to explain some of those slowdowns with the mail delivery saying he was trying to correct these long-standing financial issues with the postal service. so he cut back on costs and overtime but that did slow down the mail delivery during the holiday season right ahead of the election. you had americans waiting for prescription drugs, waiting for

mail-in ballots. he did push back on accusations that he was trying to undermine mail-in voting but did apologize for those delays calling it unacceptable. his goal here, though, is to still cut down on costs. so the changes he is suggesting would still slow down the mail and that is prompting new concern, george, right before tax season and possibly another round of stimulus checks. >> he says he's not going anywhere, but he can be replaced. it's just a bit of a complicated process. >> reporter: this is complicated. so louis dejoy is a republican donor. he cannot be removed by the president of the united states, but he can be removed by the board of governors. and so right now democrats are pushing the white house to take action and they're strategically trying to fill the vacancies on the board of governors. they are the ones that could remove dejoy. >> it could happen by the summer. okay, thanks very much. robin? now to south dakota's attorney general. under fire and facing impeachment following his involvement in a deadly accident. he is not backing down and alex perez has the latest. >> reporter: south dakota attorney general jason

ravnsboreg is facing impeachment following miss did he meeng misdemeanor charges from a deadly car accident last september and the release of two recorded interviews with investigators. >> i'm thinking it's a deer at this point. >> reporter: he says he called the sheriff to report the late night crash and then was allowed to leave the scene before returning the next morning in a car borrowed from the sheriff. that's when he says he first discovered joseph boever had been killed. but investigators later challenging his claim that he didn't see boever before or after the accident pointing to the victim's glasses found in the attorney general's front floorboard. >> they're joe's glasses. i wondered about that. that means his face came through your windshield. his glasses are right there, jason. those are joe's. >> reporter: police say cell phone data shows minutes after the crash he walked right past the 55-year-old who had been walking with a flashlight before he was hit. >> also had to walk by the light. that's the really confusing part. again, the light is still on.

back in the spotlight now thanks to that popular new documentary. amy robach had a chance to sit down with one of jamie spears' attorneys, and she joins us now. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, michael. conservatorships are usually put in place for people who courts find to be unable to make decisions for themselves and britney has been in one since she was in her 20s. thanks to a social media movement people are asking why does she still need one? >> i understand that every story needs a villain, but people have it so wrong here. ♪ oops i did it again ♪ >> reporter: this morning the attorney for jamie britney spears' father, is speaking out to abc news. >> this is a story about a fiercely loving, dedicated and loyal father who rescued his daughter from a life-threatening situation. people were harming her and they were exploiting her. jamie saved britney's life. >> reporter: in 2008, following a bitter divorce, custody battle and two hospitalizations, britney was placed under a court mandated conservatorship which has been making medical and

financial decisions for her in the last 13 years. >> hi, britney. >> reporter: the conservatorship front and center of the new documentary "framing britney spears" and is a primary focus of the #freebritney movement. a passionate group of her fans who believe she's being controlled against her will. >> all: free britney. >> reporter: jamie's attorney say court documents so when he stepped in as conservator in 2008, her assets were only worth $2.8 million. they say he worked with his daughter to restore her finances under the conservatorship to nearly $60 million in 2019. >> it's a shocking number to know, okay, here's a rock star, a pop star, a young woman who's making $40 million a year and somehow she only ends up with $2.8 million in the bank. does jamie know how that happened? >> britney's assets were clearly being mismanaged and she was being taken advantage of financially by some of those around her. >> how did jamie turn britney's

finances around so dramatically? >> he has collaborated with her. he -- when she is up for performing, she has performed. when she wants album, she can record an album and when she wants to live her life the way she wants like a normal person, he has collaborated with her to do that as well. >> reporter: since 2008 britney has released four albums. ♪ would you hold it against me ♪ >> reporter: starred on a primetime show. >> i felt like i had a connection with you. >> reporter: and even hosted her own las vegas residency. but she has not performed professionally since 2019 saying at the time she was backing out of an upcoming show because her dad was sick and she needed to focus on family. but last year a seemingly different tune. in november her attorney telling a judge, my client has informed me that she is afraid of her father, adding she will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career. can you explain why britney's

lawyer is saying she doesn't want her dad in charge of her finances anymore and she's actually saying at least through her lawyer -- her lawyer is saying that britney says she won't perform anymore until her dad is no longer in charge of her. why would that happen? why would that statement be made? >> throughout 2020 britney and her father had many conversations and in fact earlier on in the pandemic they spent two weeks with other family members hunkered down in louisiana. britney and jamie went on long drives together. they played and worked in the family garden and every night jamie cooked southern comfort food that the family ate and enjoyed together. and in that time britney never expressed those words to her father. she's never asked him to step aside. >> reporter: jamie's attorney says these videos jamie says he and the spears family filmed and shared exclusively with abc news are from that family gathering,

britney horsing around with her sister jamie lynn riding a bike with her niece and playing around with the family including jamie in the beard in the garden. is it the belief this is something her lawyer is saying and it's not coming from britney herself? >> jamie loves his daughter and like any other family, issues come up from time to time. but this in no way takes away from the love and support that they have for each other. britney knows that her daddy loves her and she knows that she can call on him any time, conservatorship or not. >> reporter: vivian, it is difficult to understand then why britney's lawyer actually took it a step further and said that britney was scared of her father, scared of jamie. does jamie have any idea why that statement would be made? >> in the many conversations that jamie and britney had throughout 2020, britney never

said those things to jamie. she never asked him to step aside. >> if britney through her lawyer, though, is asking that jamie, her father, not be a part of her conservatorship, why does jamie then still insist on being her conservator? >> jamie serves as britney's conservator because he loves her, he wants the best for britney. no sign of alcohol or drugs, but his agency is investigating what caused the accident. as investigators try to determine the cause of tiger woods' potentially career-destroying wreck, l.a. sheriffs ruling out alcohol. >> this is purely an accident. there was no evidence of any impairment whatsoever. he was lucid, no odor of alcohol. >> reporter: adding there will be no charges. this is one of the few suburban streets you'll see with a runaway vehicle ramp. in fact there are two of them and the sheriff calls this such a dangerous stretch of road that there have been 13 accidents here over the past 13 months, four of them with es and that stretch of road is so notorious that late wednesday the county announced a safety review in an effort to make it safer. on wednesday, tiger woods' girlfriend, erica herman seen visiting the golf legend as he recovers from the wreck that totaled his suv and mangled one of his legs. during emergency surgery a metal rod, screws and pins were

now that she has tgood to hear. kaylee, thank you. we turn to the new study on plant proteins and long-term health benefits. could upping your intake of beans, nuts and more help prevent heart disease? dr. ashton will join us with more on that. tell us about the study. >> so, robin, here it is. it was just out in the journal of the american heart association, pretty big study, over 100,000 postmenopausal women were followed then for 18 years and the findings of this study pretty interesting. they found that the women who ate more protein from plant-based sources had an associated lower risk of dementia, lower risk of heart disease and lower risk of something we call all cause mortality means death from all causes, in comparison to people who ate more red meat, dairy, eggs and poultry.

>> animal protein. so do researchers know why that is? >> there's some working theories that have been reported in the medical and nutritional science literature. one has to do with inflammatory metabolites so these are by-products of animal protein that can then affect the heart and the brain and our blood vessels, another one has to do with the gut microbiome. those are the two main working theories at this point. >> jen, word on the street you're three weeks into a plant-based style of eating. how is it going? >> i am, robin. this was my little experiment during my last covid quarantine and i'm about three weeks in, just curious whether or not i could do it. whether i would notice any difference. i've been completely plant-based pretty much for the last three weeks. i checked my bad cholesterol. it dropped after just ten days of eating this way from 111 to

and, melissa, i want to say for the uninitiated what is a hot pot and why is it so significant to chinese food culture? >> so hot pot is one of my favorite things to do. it's not just a dish, it's a and so it's something that i've done within my own family and a lot of other asian families out there do this experience to celebrate the lunar new year. >> we got a lot going on here. >> anything, really. >> yeah. >> any celebration. >> i see and to upgrade our standard soup to a hot pot meal we need simple equipment that we might already have on hand starting with the pot for the broth. >> sure. yeah, so right now i have a traditional style split pot so i can have two different types in there and i like to go spicy and my family likes it more mild. you can use a standard pot. anything this size or so and what do you have? i think you're using a h. --

>> all right. and for your cookware on the bottom you want to use something, i think you have an induction burner. i'm using a camping stove so it's really whatever you got in the house to create some fire on the stove here. >> whatever gets hot, okay. i got you. >> whatever gets hot. >> now we want to heat up our broth and want it to get hot. once we do that we use it to cook the meat and vegetables. how do we get started? >> exactly so you can play around with different types of broths. i have here just a store bought chicken broth. can you certainly go vegetarian with a mushroom style broth and you got to have fun with fresh vegetables. i have, i mean, we have carrots here, we have tofu. and, michael, you can feel free to follow along with me and toss things in. >> all right. >> really what's important is that you start with sort of the heartier vegetables or the heartier things like the tofu,

the carrots, can kind of go in first. those take about two to five minutes to cook. and then we have mushroom, mushrooms can also go in, i have a whole assortment here. >> i like mushrooms. >> it's fun and playful. >> have fun, throw things into the pot. >> it's kind of cool. you can do this with the family, right. bring your kids along. >> exactly. it's very communal and once it comes to the leafy greens, these are more delicate. these cook much quicker, within 30 seconds to even a minute so i have some spinach here. i'll toss some in. we have bok choy. >> all right. >> you can have fun with some noodles and dumplings and then we move into the proteins. i have some shrimp that i'm just going to toss right in. and all of these ingredients really flavoring the broth. >> i tell you what, i love this. you got ingredients they did not give me so yours will be better than mine. but you have so many -- >> it's whatever you got really. >> there's so many ingredients for the hot pot but you say there's one thing no hot pot feast is complete without.
