be granted emergency use authorization in just a matter of hours. take a live look right there at the johnson & johnson facility storage in kentucky where the one-dose vaccine ready to ship out if they get the green light. >> it could come as early as today. >> all the latest on the pandemic coming up. we begin with president biden ordering military action for the first time since taking office, launching air strikes against militia groups in syria that are backed by iran. our chief global affairs anchor martha raddatz has the latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. this was the first military strike of the biden administration, payback for a recent attack in iraq that left several american contractors and a u.s. service member wounded and at least one contractor working for the u.s. dead. the u.s. military launched two warplanes into eastern syria near the iraqi border on the orders of president biden who sources say chose the least lethal option targeting a cluster of buildings used by

iranian-backed militias at a border control point, the same iranian-linked militias believed to be responsible for the attack on a coalition base in iraq early last week. >> we know what we did and we're confident that that target was being used by the same shia militia that conducted the strikes. >> reporter: those militia rocket strikes slamming into that coalition base near erbil, iraq, last week where u.s. soldiers and contractors were housed. you can see those burned out bunks. the fire destroying the structures. the same iranian-backed militias have launched rocket attacks against the u.s. embassy in baghdad and the so-called green zone surrounding it. an official telling abc news that the retaliatory strikes by the u.s. could have resulted in a handful of casualties. the pentagon spokesman saying that the strike was proportional and that president biden will act to protect american and

coalition personnel, but added, at the same time, we have acted in a deliberate manner that aims to de-escalate the overall situation. this retaliatory strike has gotten bipartisan support with the house majority leader steny hoyer calling it a strong act that will send a message to tehran and republican senator lindsey graham saying he appreciates the biden administration's striking back at these iranian-backed militias. george. >> and martha, the biden administration has begun to engage with iran on their nuclear program. any insight into how this is going to affect those possible negotiations? >> reporter: well, the administration is open to talks with iran, and while it may cause a bit of an uproar with the iranians for a short time, it should not affect nuclear talks. biden simply could not let those rocket attacks stand without a response and as we said this was the least lethal response, george. >> martha raddatz, thanks very much. michael. now to the latest on the

fight against the coronavirus received at least one dose of the vaccine. that is nearly 14% of the country, and the fda could grant emergency use authorization to another covid vaccine in just hours. take a live look at the johnson & johnson storage facility in kentucky where the one-dose vaccine is ready to go. steve osunsami is live now outside cdc headquarters in atlanta with more this morning. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. here at the cdc they believe that about 20 million americans have now been fully vaccinated against covid-19. these are people who have gotten both shots of the two-shot vaccine. this one-shot vaccine will make it much easier to vaccinate more americans if approved. a third covid vaccine could be available to americans next week and this one has been tested against the number of variants of the coronavirus that have been worrying public health officials. johnson & johnson has come up

with a single-shot vaccine and today they have an all-day hearing with the panel from the fda. as early as this evening the government could say yes to emergency use authorization of the drug. the drugmaker says they can ship up to 4 million doses across the country as soon as the fda gives the okay. just like the moderna and pfizer vaccines, those first johnson & johnson doses will be divided up based on population between 64 areas. >> if the fda approves the use of this new vaccine, we have a plan to roll it out as quickly as johnson & johnson can make it. >> reporter: the johnson & johnson vaccine appears highly effective against the coronavirus. the company reports that it is 85% effective against preventing severe illness and 100% effective against hospitalization and death. by the end of june, it's now possible we could have enough vaccine supply for all of america. johnson & johnson expects to produce 100 million single-dose vaccines covering 100 million people.

moderna and pfizer both two-dose vaccines expect to produce 600 million doses covering 300 million people. that's more than enough to vaccinate every american adult by the end of summer, a goal set by the president. across america, about 66 million doses of the two-dose vaccines have been put into arms and about 50 million of those shots have happened since president biden took office. the president's goal was 100 million shots in his first 100 days in office. and with one month in, he's already half the way there. but he still says he's not celebrating yet. >> while things are improving this is not a victory lap. everything is not fixed. >> reporter: what could help even more are more vaccines and there are possibly two more coming soon. the oxford astrazeneca and novavax vaccine are in phase 3 trials. at the latest, public health officials are hoping that the government will grant emergency

use authorization to johnson & johnson by this weekend, george. >> okay, steve, thanks. we're going to go back to washington now and the house getting ready to pass president biden's nearly $2 trillion covid relief bill, but the attempt to include a new $15 minimum wage suffered a setback overnight. congressional correspondent rachel scott has the latest on where things stand. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning, and the headline here is that $15 an hour minimum wage increase will likely not be included and the final version of this covid relief package. the house is still on track to pass a version of this bill today still but overnight in the senate a setback. democrats have laid the groundwork to be able to pass this bill on their own without any republican support, but that does come with limitations and so in the senate you had this policy ruling saying that that $15 an hour minimum wage increase cannot be included in their version of the bill. the white house says president joe biden is disappointed by this. he is urging congress to act and pass this bill quickly.

likely it would make it easier for the senate to pass the bill. you had two moderate senate democrats opposed to that wage increase, but lawmakers here are up against a deadline. on march 14th, unemployment benefits for millions of americans expire. they want to get this bill on president joe biden's desk before then, so this would extend those unemployment benefits and it would also include $1,400 in stimulus checks to most americans. $350 billion in aid to state and local government, plus billions more for vaccine distribution, covid testing and grants for schools. now, republicans still opposed to that $1.9 trillion price tag, george, they want more targeted relief. >> rachel, we're also hearing now from the acting police chief up on capitol hill concerned with a really stark warning about another possible attack on the capitol. let's look. >> we know that members of the militia groups that were present on january 6th have stated their desires that they want to blow up the capitol and kill as many members as possible with a

direct nexus to the state of the union. >> now that isn't even scheduled yet, that address to a joint session of congress but they are taking nothing for granted. >> reporter: this is prompting new concerns, george, about security so the acting police chief saying that while the fencing that you see around the united states capitol is temporary, she believes it's necessarily. >> rachel scott, thanks very much. cecilia. another political headline. to new york governor andrew cuomo under fire for the number of covid related nursing homes. allegations of bullying and sexual harassment now too. whit johnson with the latest on this growing controversy. >> reporter: once praised for his early efforts in the pandemic, this morning, new york governor andrew cuomo, facing mounting allegations on multiple fronts. his administration accused of a cover-up for its handling of covid deaths connected to nursing homes. >> yes, there were deaths. too many. >> reporter: cuomo's health commissioner defending the controversial decision last

spring to return covid patients to nursing homes after treatment saying it was staff members who brought the virus in. >> reporter: when it's in the community it's in the nursing homes, they tie together. >> reporter: new york's attorney general reporting those deaths were undercounted by up to 50% with some patients counted as hospital deaths despite contracting the virus in nursing ho >> we should have done a better job in providing information. i accept responsibility for that. >> reporter: state lawmakers now considering a vote to strip him of his emergency powers after a top aide admitted to withholding the data worried it would be politicized by the trump administration. this as more details surface about sexual harassment allegations against governor cuomo. his former aide, lindsey boylan, claiming in an online blog post "he stepped in front of me and kissed me on the lips. i was in shock but i kept walking." boylan first accused the governor in december saying, yes, governor cuomo sexually harassed me for years. many saw it and watched. cuomo pushing back, denying the

accusations last year. >> look, i fought for and i believe a woman has the right to come forward and express her opinion and express issues and concerns that she has. but it's just not true. >> reporter: and this week, a spokesperson for governor cuomo reiterated that claims of inappropriate behavior are, quote, simply false. new york city mayor bill de blasio is among those calling for an independent investigation. michael? >> all right, thank you, whit. now to tiger woods. the golf legend has moved to a new hospital as he recovers from that horrific suv crash. our chief national correspondent matt gutman has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, abc news has learned tiger woods is waking up in a new hospital, cedars-sinai in los angeles. after woods' horrific rollover accident shattered his right leg, he was rushed for emergency

surgery at hartford-ucla medical center where doctors implanted a metal rod, screws and pins to stabilize the bones in his tibia, ankle and foot. the hospital releasing a statement overnight saying, it was an honor to provide orthopedic trauma care to one of our generation's greatest athletes, but cedars-sinai consistently is ranked as one of the top orthopedic centers in the country. >> he is under the care of trauma surgeons right now and under the best trauma surgeons that we have in los angeles. >> reporter: dr. jason snibbe is an orthopedic surgeon in los angeles. while he's not treating tiger woods, he's treated similar injuries. the first step is complete rest. >> complete rest, then after typically around six weeks, maybe eight weeks, he'll start working on the muscles and getting the muscles to fire up again. >> reporter: this on top of his existing back ailments and five surgeries, the most recent in december. but this injury may not 28 l rback be a career killer.

smith had his right leg shattered during a sack. >> i'll tell you what, smith is hurting badly. >> reporter: but his leg got infected and 17 surgeries later, doctors finally cleared him to play. but unlike alex smith tiger woods suffered significant damage to his ankle and his foot, and orthopedic surgeons have said even if the small bones mend perfectly, it likely means a life of pain and inflexibility but they add, if anybody can overcome that, it's tiger woods. cecilia. >> certainly hoping for the best. okay, matt, thanks so much. we turn to the story everybody is talking about, that big rebrand of mr. potato head. the classic children's toy now has a gender neutral name and this morning as you can imagine the reaction is pouring in. deborah roberts joins us now with more on this. good morning, deb. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. hasbro is joining a list of to be more inclusive.w pdus fo

of the coronavirus that have public health officials so concerned. johnson & johnson has come up with a single-shot vaccine, and today they have an all-day hearing with a panel from the fda. as early as this evening the government could say yes to emergency use authorization of the drug. the drugmaker says they can ship up to 4 million doses across the country as soon as the fda gives the okay. >> if the fda approves the use of this new vaccine, we have a plan to roll it out as quickly as johnson & johnson can make it. >> reporter: the johnson & johnson vaccine appears highly effective against the coronavirus. the company reports that it is 85% effective against preventing severe illness and 100% effective against hospitalization and death. by the end of june, it's now possible we could have enough vaccine supply for all of america. johnson & johnson expects to produce 100 million single dose vaccines covering 100 million people.

>> reporter: today, a new general ration of black designef finding the light from virtual fashion shows to designers like sergio hudson who made it to the world stage by dressing the country's new vice president. >> it's such a hard industry to be in for anybody, white, black, asian, whoever, but it's especially hard for us because of the financial constraints of our community. >> reporter: and that financial piece is important. if you want to help black designers, there are a few things you can do. patronize them, find them online, there are some great ones, christopher john rogers, just giving you a primer here. a lot of them doing great work. invest in their companies. if you're into social media, give them shoutouts. it's all about nurturing them and giving them the opportunity because that's what it's all about, opportunity. michael. >> i'm glad you're shining the light on them, deb, thank you so much for that. cecilia. >> michael, thanks. we turn now to our final day and our final series of parent's
