slone with all new details. >> reporter: johnson & johnson's one-shot vaccine is now the country's third weapon in the war against covid-19. the fda issuing emergency use authorization on saturday after a panel of independent experts voted unanimously on friday to authorize the vaccine. >> today's authorization expands the availability of vaccines. one of our best tools for preventing covid-19. >> reporter: in trials, the johnson & johnson vaccine has been 100% effective against hospitalization and death, and 85% effective at preventing severe illness. while its overall effectiveness was lower than pfizer and moderna, johnson & johnson's was testing against concerning variants and it still performed well. >> this vaccine is going to keep you out of the hospital, it is going to keep you out of the intensive care unit, and it is going to keep you from dying. >> reporter: the next step, an independent advisory panel at the cdc will hold an emergency meeting on sunday to review the

data and make a public health recommendation on the use of the latest vaccine. as early as monday, 3.9 million doses will be shipped out of two locations, one in memphis and the other in louisville, kentucky. demand for vaccinations has outweighed supply. johnson & johnson's vaccine requires only regular refrigeration, making for easier shipping and storage. multiple states have been easing restrictions, but officials warn it may be too soon. president biden releasing a statement tonight saying in part, though we celebrate today's news, i urge all americans, keep washing your hands, stay socially distanced, and keep wearing masks. >> it is important to remember where we are in the pandemic. things are tenuous. now is not the time to relax restrictions. >> reporter: the average daily case total fell 73% over the past six weeks, but that progress has levelled off, even ticking up 5% in the last five

days. this week's average daily death toll jumping 10%. the cdc director is saying we could be seeing the beginning effects of new variants of the virus. christine slone, abc news, new york. governor gavin newsom says california will get 380,000 covid-19 vaccine doses next week, and more than 1.1 million over the next three weeks. with the weekly total increasing toward the end of march, what will make the johnson & johnson vaccine easier to distribute -- distribute that is across the state is its basic storage requirement. >> there is not a storage issue and there's not the need for the dramatic cold degrees that the other vaccines need. >> another aspect that will impact distribution is the statewide system. on march 31st california is expected to be switched over to a centralized vaccine appointment and delivery system

by blueshield. experts say they expect more vaccination sites and more people who are able to give the vaccine. well, more vaccine supply means some hard-to-reach communities may finally get the vaccine. as "abc 7 news" reporter matt boone explains, that includes home-bound patients who have yet to receive a shot. >> we have been limited in our ability to vaccinate our homebound patients. >> reporter: the doctor is a geriatric physician. getting to a mass vaccination site or a hospital is nearly impossible for 200 of her patients who are home bound and so far have not received a vax even though they're eligible due to their age. >> every week we are told, not this week because there's not enough vaccine. our patients have been devastated because we've been telling them it is coming. >> reporter: she says she would like more data about the johnson & johnson vaccine for people over 75, though having it on the market will help access for

everyone. >> one more vaccine on the pmar goal, and it means greater opportunity for people to be vaccinated given that there's been limited supply of the two existing vaccines. >> reporter: she says she is ready to distribute the doses when they come in but still doesn't have a time frame. >> they're just having to sit back and wait and hope they don't get sick waiting for the vaccine. >> reporter: now, in addition to those who are homebound, caretakers, especially family members who are informal caretakers have been having difficulty. we take your questions about vaccines through our "abc 7 news" website and have gotten many similar to this from maria l. who wrote, "my husband and i care for my elderly mother who lives with us. i am 58 years old and my husband is 61 years old. we have no paperwork to verify this. can we get vaccinated?" i asked the doctor about this. she says, yes, they are eligible though they will likely need proof from a doctor or health care provider, and even then it is complicated. >> i have had many physicians be

asked by their patients to write letters, saying -- explaining that i am the caregiver for x person who is older and therefore i am essentially a health care worker and they've gone to vaccination sites and been declined and turned down. >> reporter: she says she hopes she can vaccinate the caregivers as well as her patients once her practice receives that vaccine supply. in the newsroom, matt boone, "abc 7 news." >> thank you so much, matt. interesting stuff right there. "abc 7 news" is monitoring the vaccine rollout with our vaccine tracker. you can track california's progress and compare our state's progress with the rest of the country. you can find this on abc7news.com. well, to the covid headlines. in california today, the state reports just over 5,100 new cases. that number is down more than 1,500 from this time last week. the seven-day positivity rate also continues to dip. now at 2.5%.

san francisco and santa clara county are approaching the numbers required to move out of the purple and into the less restrictive red tier. well, as part of our effort to build a better bay area amid the pandemic, we're focused on your health and more places and activities reopening. tonight a look at the first weekend for the return of outdoor sports in some bay area counties. "abc 7 news" reporter anser h hassan has the story from berkley where studen-athletes and weekend warriors couldn't wait to compete. >> reporter: it is just practice this morning but soon it will be back to competition. >> instead of a training session you are putting on your kit and come out to play and there would be referees on the field. >> reporter: ted kemp is coach for the soccer club. his team has been practicing for weeks but the new rules they can start playing games. last week california relaxed rules regulating high school sports, and as of friday the new rules allow club and adult

leagues to get back to competition as well. >> they've been conditioning and working so hard to be able to return to play and they can now showcase their skills and what they learned. >> reporter: outdoor sports are allowed in counties with fewer than 14 cases of covid-19 for every 100,000 residents. the guidelines leave it to each county, district or school to resume play. >> although we are returning to play, we are still in a pandemic and that's something that we need to, you know, be careful of. >> playing against teams again, running around more, and seeing other kids playing against us. >> reporter: 8-year-old zoe aguirre knows her season is about to change. what won't change is having to wear masks. coaches and spectators have to wear masks as do athletes who aren't actively playing. coach nico reisher says being able to compete is an important step in getting back to normal life. >> usually you practice and practice and have the pay-off of winning a game or going to competition in general.

i'm excited for them to see what the end goal is. >> reporter: in the east bay, ans anser hassan, "abc 7 news". city health officials confirmed youth sports can resume once the city enters the red tier. that he predicting it could be as soon as this coming tuesday. athletes will have to follow extra safety precautions and help get things back up and running, the city will be providing field space to leagues offering a seven-week mini season starting in april. also in san francisco, the city's new state-of-the-art tennis center in golden gate park is set to open on wednesday. $27 million project includes 16usta regulation tennis courts, including a sunken stadium style court. it also includes a clubhouse with a lounge, recreation room, locker room and kitchen. the facility also has a dedicated classroom. courts are open to both

>> what a moment. today in san mateo hundreds showed up for a rally against asian hate. leading the charge, a 7th grader who said she had to do something about the recent violence against asians including some right here in the bay area. "abc 7 news" reporter chris reyes with how the young girl's mission is inspiring others. >> stand for asians! stand for asians! >> reporter: meet 7th grader ashlyn, the organizers of this rally in san mateo that drew hundreds saturday afternoon. her call to action, stop asian hate. in recent weeks abc 7 has been covering a disturbing number of stories of violence against asians, especially the elderly. in many cases police are still investigating the motive but the images were enough to galvanize her. >> i was like, whoa, this is not okay. why is it happening in our community. >> she said, mommy, this is not right, i want to do a march. i said, okay, i have never done this before but, hey, you know,

let's figure this out. we can do this. >> reporter: so the gathering that happened here in downtown san mateo is not the first one this year in the bay area. across the nation an even louder rallying cry including from prominent asian americans. actor daniel day kim has been spreading awareness on social media. the co-founder of nonprofit gold house, a collective of asian leaders, has been working to share resources. in a nutshell what is the rally cry? >> it is not just to act, not just to post on social media but to do it together, to bind bold businesses and gold businesses, speaking up for folks and so on. >> part of a long history in which asian communities suffered violence. >> reporter: back in san mateo, ashlyn was surrounded by friends but also an older generation inspired by her actions. >> stop asians from being targeted. >> in reality it will take

generations. in the case of the 7th grader it sounds like they're our children already. >> reporter: in san mateo, chris reyes, "abc 7 news". in new york city asian americans are terrified by a wave of attacks. in just ten days there have been seven assaults in their community. today hundreds of people gathered in new york for a rally to denounce the violence. >> anyone who commits an act of hatred against the asian american community will be found, will be arrested. >> any attack or act of hate against one of us is an attack against all of us! >> mayor bill de blasio says the city's office for preventing hate crimes will meet with asian community leaders to discuss the recent violence. police are still investigating the motive in some of the attacks. in at least one case prosecutors have declined to charge it as a hate crime. well, basketball player jeremy lynn is elaborating on a facebook post in which he said

he's experienced racist taunts on the court. lynne is playing for the g league warriors right now. this week he wrote, a facebook post indicating an opposing player called him coronavirus during a game. it is unclear when this happened, but the g league is investigating. as for who taunted lin, lin took the high road, saying in a tweet today, he won't be naming or shaming anyone. st. mary's college in moraga temporarily removed a sculpture from campus over its possible connection to nazi germany. the statue was located at the school's museum of art quad. more than 1,000 people signed an online petition that says it was created by a nazi artist. st. mary's released a statement saying it is taking the matter seriously and the school is researching how it acquired the statue in the first place. well, focusing on issues involving race and social justice is part of abc 7's commitment to building a better

bay area. black muslim food week is underway and working to highlight bay area halal restaurants. it has teamed up with ten restaurants and food vendors to increase awareness during these challenging economic times. there are deals in oakland, san francisco and san jose. >> it is very important for us to promote the places that are featuring the food so that muslims know that outside their home they can have a place that they can go and eat. >> the bay area's largest halal food organization is also hosting virtual discussions on topics like anti-racism and organizing. well, happening now, a full moon is captivating people across the bay area tonight. >> it is beautiful and i see all of the stars. >> well, she loves it there. we love it, too. check out this time lapse taken from san francisco as the moon rises over the bay bridge. one family from l.a. saw

tonight's moon as a perfect opportunity to visit the bay area. >> i was like, baby, let's go for a night ride, and we ended up way in san francisco looking at the moon. >> i love the moon. it is bright, shiny, peaceful. >> oh, love that moon. the full moon technically peaked around 3:17 a.m. this morning but they typically last around three nights. joined right now by meteorologist drew tuma. people were standing in the middle of the street, drew, just to get a shot of the bay bridge and that moon. >> yes. it really was captivating everybody. we had clear skies, a bright, full moon, and those clear skies, they'll continue tomorrow as well. so tomorrow we'll finish the weekend with a lot of sunshine. let's show you the east bay hills out there tonight. a live look from the camera showing you the clear skies. you also notice that our camera, it is bouncing around a little bit. we do have a breeze in our hills right now that is pretty active. let's show you the winds above

1,000 feet. you see oakland hills has been gusting between 12 and 15 miles per hour, a little stronger on mount diablo. gusts in the north bay between 20, if not 40 miles per hour. these winds coming out of the north are actually keeping temperatures a little elevated by this late night hour. you look at oakland, 567 degr d but down to 45 in fremont with calmer winds. 44 in santa rosa. currently 51 in the city. 48 in half moon bay and 42 the current temperature in livermore. here is the bigger picture, live doppler 7 along with satellite. high pressure off the coast has been keeping us dry, supplying the sunshine, and an area of low pressure to our east. these two are opposing forces and it creates a wind tunnel effect that is aimed right at california right now. so that breeze will continue in the overnight hours. future weather showing you first thing tomorrow morning at 5:00 a.m., especially in the north bay and the east bay hills, we do expect that breeze anywhere from about 15 to 30 miles per

hour. but that wind will die down throughout the morning, so by the afternoon we do expect pretty calm conditions across the bay area. overnight tonight we'll track that breeze. temperatures mainly in the mid 30s to mid 40s. again, that beautiful full moon is out there shining bright under plenty of stars. 46, the low in san francisco and oakland. 41 overnight in san jose. we will drop into the 30s in north bay. 36, santa rosa. 34, ukiah. concord dropping to about 42 degrees. now, tomorrow we have that breeze in the morning. it calms down in the afternoon, so it is really looking like a really nice day. a lot of sunshine. temperatures, a few degrees warmer than they were today but all in all, 64 for the city. 66 in oakland. about 67 in san jose. 68 in concord. may see a couple of 70s pop up in the north bay like santa rosa and cloverdale at about 70 degrees. the dry pattern continues tomorrow and it does continue for much of the week ahead. our next chance of any wet

building a better bay area for a safe and secure future. this is "abc 7 news". good evening, i'm j.r. stone. thanks for joining us. our top story tonight, the federal drug administration has authorized johnson & johnson's single-shot covid-19 vaccine for emergency use. the fda says the vaccine is 85% protective against the most severe covid-19 illnesses. 3 million doses could be sent out across the nation on monday. 20 million by the end of march. governor gavin newsom says the state will get 380,000 doses of the johnson & johnson vaccine this week, and more than 1.1 million over the next three weeks. with the weekly total increasing towards the end of march. more vaccination news in the north bay. sonoma county is cancelling vaccination clinics and postponing appointments due to a shortage. the county says its supply is

limited and cannot keep up with the demand. for now it is planning to give out shots next week, but only second doses. plans to vaccinate school employees have also been put on hold, which could push back the start of in-person classes for some students. sonoma county expects to receive about 7,500 doses next week. it is too early to tell when the county will receive any of the just-authorized johnson & johnson vaccine. a mobile vaccination clinic is being held at allen temple baptist church in oakland this weekend. the site is vaccinating health care workers, those 65 and older and anyone working in education, agriculture or emergency services. it is being done in partnership with the federal government's mass vaccination site at the oakland coliseum. >> they were also looking to do vaccinations in the community and they had mobile units that were willing to come out where the people were. >> the clinic will be open again tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00

p.m. appointments are required, but exceptions will be made for those who meet requirements. san francisco is taking new steps to get shots into the arms of its homeless 65 and up. "the examiner" reports starting next month the city will send mobile vaccination teams to local shelters, permanent supportive housing, shelter-in-place hotels and safe sleeping sites. an exact vaccination schedule has not been released but it all depends on supply and age eligibility. one issue with vaccinations is overcoming some of the hurdles in minority communities. doctors and community leaders have acknowledged there is a distrust in medicine. that's something that the oakland naacp addressed today. >> i tell people to reassure them, that in the trials there wasn't an exclusion of anybody, and so when we talk about side effects and efficacy or

tomorrow. their schedule for the next six games is pretty brutal. after the lakers you have the blazers, then the suns, all road games. then the all-star break and then some more road games. so, i mean, one hand you could say, look, this is tough. the other hand, it is kind of a good measuring test for the warriors to see exactly where they're at with the rest of the league. >> yeah, you know, the west is very difficult this year. i mean i think approaching this is like this will be a goods test of where we are as a team and really see that with true adversity it can reveal so many things. i'm curious to see how they handle it. not whether they win every game but how they measure themselves going into the second part of the season. >> finally, after seven tries the warriors are able to win three games in a row. let's see if they can build on that and make it four games in a row against the lakers. draymond green, you know, a week ago we sat here and he got the double t and things went awry in charlotte, but he is playing, especially the way he is distributing the ball is

unbelievable. 19 assists last night, and in the last month he's leading the league in assists at over 11 a game. this is incredible. he is a power forward. outside of lebron, who else can do it in the league? >> it is amazing. i think coach kerr is on to something here. we have been seeing elements of this all through draymond green's career. i think what they decided to do is go full on and make him into a point guard, a point forward, point guard. i don't think it makes much of a difference but you see what he is capable of on the floor. his play over the last several giveaways has been amazing. >> warriors sevent in the west currently, record of 19 and 15. what is the ceiling for them? >> i think it will be a wait and see. i think this next -- you know, the games you are talking about will be a good test to see where they're at. i think they feel -- because i feel like sometimes kelly owe br oubre is farther along but i'm waiting for guys to come up. >> they're playing fun basketball. certainly entertaining and we look forward to see them against the lakers tomorrow. chris, back to you. thanks, guys very much.

senior night on the farm. cardinal hosting oregon state. stanford needing to win. a slam right there, part of a 9-0 run. the freshman williams had a team high 14. cardinal up 10 at that point in first half, but stanford lets it slip away. john lucas, a career-high 26 for the beavers. stanford falls, 73-62. the cardinal lost three straight. a tough season for cal hosting oregon in the regular season finale. some family allowed in. matt bradley here going to hit the jumper to bring cal within one. it might be the last game for the junior. it all false apart later. oregon's figaro, steals in the backcourt. that was fancy. cal needs a time out. after the time-out, figaro steals it in a lay up, scoring seven points in 30 seconds. cal falls, 74-63. bears end the regular season 3 and 16 in conference.
