up to oprah. what they said was unsurvivable. new message from tiger woods this morning. and from the golden globes awards, to a customs crackdown that's no bologna, all the trending stories for your monday morning. good monday morning. we begin with the extreme weather on this first day of march. >> a state of emergency has been declared in parts of kentucky. new video from london, kentucky, shows people being evacuated from the rising floodwaters. heavy rain has been falling from tennessee to kwv wv. >> on the west the story is the powerful winds. a massive tree came crashing down in santa ana, california. sending people running for cover. >> we begin with the flooding here in the east. this morning, millions of americans are waking up to a severe weather threat. heavy rain and powerful winds triggering flash flooding across the southeast.

west of nashville, tennessee, overnight, a mud slide shut down part of a highway. nearby, rescue crews had to use bucket trucks to save five people, including an infant, after their truck slid off the flooded bridge. across the state line in murray, kentucky, the rooms of this church flooded with several inches of water. parks and athletic fields look like lakes. at this apartment building, multiple cars have water up to their bumpers, including a kentucky state police car. >> you can see that car, the tires are almost completely covered. those cars over there, are pretty much under water. >> reporter: in the town of hurricane, west virginia, torrential rains caused a reservoir to overflow. flooding parts of the town. >> it would be three or four

hours before the water went down. we're flooded out. we'll have to wait until the water goes down. >> reporter: but 19 days until spring, the big thaw is under way. 73% of the u.s. was covered in snow one week ago, now down to 30%. >> definitely heading in the right direction. we're thinking about those impacted communities this morning. we'll look at monday forecast in a few minutes. turning to the pandemic, johnson & johnson begins shipping its vaccine today. planning to test the vaccine on babies. the senate is getting ready to take up president biden's covid relief plan, including those $1400 stimulus checks. abc's ike ejiochi is here. >> good morning. covid cases, deaths and hospitalizations are dropping. now, a third vaccine is on the way. but new reports about crowds gathering for spring break has health officials weary of the coming months. new this morning, another vaccine becoming available in the fight against covid. johnson & johnson's single-shot

dose has been granted emergency use authorization by the fda. >> this vaccine has been shown to be 100% protective against hospitalizations and death. >> reporter: clinical trials show the vaccine to be effective against the brazil and south african variants. the new vaccine will start shipping out today with the first dose in arms coming tuesday. with the almost 4 million single-shot doses going to americans, 2.8 million of those to states and local jurisdictions. the rest to pharmacies and communities and federally qualified health centers. this morning, johnson & johnson saying they'll test the single-shot dose on children, even newborns and pregnant women. dr. fauci saying take whatever vaccine is available. >> you will add to the over all protection in your county, in your country. >> reporter: but some experts say we're still a ways away from normalcy. >> we're not able to vaccinate 80% of the population yet.

by april we will be a ways off. >> reporter: but americans ready to get back to normal. this morning, reports out of miami show a rising number of tourists gathering for spring break. >> we're going somewhere now. >> reporter: and on the covid relief front, president biden planning to meet with senate democrats tuesday as they prepare to consider his $1.9 trillion relief package. the bill passed the house, but changes will be made in the senate. >> we have no time to waste. if we act now, we can finally get ahead of the virus. we can finally get our economy moving again and the people of this country have suffered far too much for too long. >> now the $15 federal minimum wage, that's expected to be left out of the bill once it's all said and done. but some senate democrats feel they maybe able to fit it in there as an amendment. mona. >> ike, thank you. in washington, a review of the u.s. capitol security reportedly calls for sweeping changes in the wake of the riot. including hiring 1,000 new officers and establishing a permanent fence around the capitol.
