in america, black organization was the black panther party, recognized around the world by governments including china, gosh, north korea, africa, vietnam, the list goes on of actual countries that respected the work that we're doing. and here we are to educate, to organize, and to create real, lasting institutions in our community. they always accuse us of the police confrontations and what have you. we never did that. the thing about it is, we never ran out and tore up buildings. we didn't burn down nothing. we were too busy feeding the kids. we were too busy creating health clinics. so this was the real story. and this year is the 55th anniversary celebration of the founding of the party.

the original black panther party started in october of 1966. and the reason why it came to be was one of the most systemic issues -- there were several -- number one, that people didn't feel that anything was being told concerning who they were or their history or knowledge of themselves. it was originally the black panther party for self-defense and the concept of defending yourself against police brutality but, most important of all, understanding your legal rights. at that point in time, it was ripe. the conditions were ripe. and we see the great comparison of the black lives matter movement to the civil rights movement. so when we want freedom, we want the power to determine the destiny of our own community. we want land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice, and peace. that's where that phrase came from, "no justice, no peace."
