5:06 pm
no. and to understand why communities of color are not necessarily receptive to this plan, we have to use the old adage, walk a mile in my shoes. new york city has reported that asian-american students make up the smallest portion of children that have returned to classrooms. the same is true in nashville public schools. in chicago, one-third of asian, black and latino students have returned, while two-thirds, or 66% of white kids, have come back. as san francisco schools prepare to reopen, we have found that many asian-americans here are also following that trend. >> both the school district and the teachers union have conducted interviews with families concerning with what we're hearing. >> breaks of communication occur

5:08 pm
today's discussion on school reopening in the legislature highlighted the different worlds we sometimes live in. in communities that have been hit hardest by the pandemic where everyone is struck with fear. >> some say they haven't seen their grandchildren in over a year, but people of color don't want that for their kids. they want them growing up and living and sharing experiences with their aunts and uncles and grandparents, so they have decided that home, ama, is what's safe for them. >> all right. leanne, thank you so much. then there's this. a new stanford study found that distance learning had a negative impact on reading skills at the elementary school level. nbc 7's david will yluis show yt he is being done to alleviate that. >> reporter: they say reading
