arrives coming up. ama. >> thank you, sandhya. in oklahoma one person is under arrest. happened this morning in perkins street and has shaken the neighborhood. j.r. stone found a witness and talked with people that were close to the victim. >> what happened? he got attacked. >> a witness describing the moments a 75-year-old asian senior was attacked and robbed. he called 9-1-1 after a witness began shouting for help tuesday morning. police scouring the neighborhood as they looked for clues. hours later, a break. oakland police announced an arrest in the case.

those that know the victim tell us it does not look like he will make it. the man was walking with a at least one person involved in pushing the cane away and shoving him to the ground and taking his wallet and phone. >> anger. anger you need to target someone of that age. >> neighbors are outraged at two drive-by shootings and this most recent attack on an asian senior. >> i am horrified. we walk this several times a week. >> reporter: friends of the victim are heart broken over what happened. last check saying he was still alive. j.r. stone, abc 7 news. >> let's move on.

covid-19 took center stage. governor newsom spoke from an empty dodger stadium saying that the pandemic will end soon. >> 54,000 californians we mourn with broken hearts. >> reporter: still, he says the state took action that saved lives. >> we were the first state to issue a stay at home order and launch the mass vaccina vaccinaa site. he admitted mistakes that were made earlier. pointed out how we can overcome them. >> reporter: state republican leaders were not impressed. >> no plan for how to get our kids back in school.

return, we are hearing stories of coaches getting vaccinated. >> in the past few weeks youth sports returned to the bay area. >> i am comfortable being outdoors with masks on. >> reporter: he is a parent and volunteer coach for the youth rugby club and found out because of his role in student eligibility, he is eligible for a vaccine. >> i have not been vaccinated but have an appointment scheduled for saturday. i hope everybody gets vaccinated. >> i feel comfortable with the coaches being vaccinated and feel it is a safer environment. >> reporter: the state vaccine guidelines as they relate to student care and education are up to the counties to interpret. counties like san francisco and marin say all youth coaches are eligible for a vaccine whether or not they work at a school.

other counties are indicating that right now only coaches who are affiliated with the school are eligible for the vaccine. >> teachers, coaches, they are in line to get it now. >> reporter: the football coach and co-founder of next level sports. as a school coach he is eligible for a vaccine. >> will you be getting the vaccine as a coach? >> probably not, not right now. no. >> reporter: while testing is a part of the guideline, vaccines are not. there was no guidance at all associated with the vaccines for students or for coaches.

all this week we are looking at the learning loss for students caused by the pandemic. distance learning was daunting in the beginning. here we are a year later and it is clear there has been learning loss. >> i want to show you lesson 21 and go over things with you all. >> like all teachers she has had to adapt to distance learning to make sure her students do not fall behind. >> is it obvious to you when a child is starting to struggle? >> yes. not only in person, but also online. what has been so wonderful about this year is that we have had this way of assessing students online that has made it easy for us to see where they are at with

their reading levels. they are able to see where they are at and compare it to where they should be at. >> catching learning loss early is possible. jeffrey stafford said it could be harder with older students. >> not that easy. all of the other factors that we are no longer in control of or we are not seeing right in front of our face. struggling, frustrated. >> once you identify a child is struggling or getting learning loss, how difficult is it to catch them up? >> it has challenges but luckily throughout the district, we have so many amazing resources to help with reading intervention. >> sometimes it is just spending a little bit of extra time. we offer learning support,

office hours and having kids attend those. >> are you concerned when a good portion of these students are struggling, how challenging it could be? >> i think the socialization factor is important. being able to learn from each other, i think that would really help. >> i have a feeling because we will be all in person together it will be wonderful to see them read before my eyes. plus parents have been really involved. we play music. try to get them to interact as much as possible. we celebrate the little things.
