[ laughter ] do you stay up late in general, or no? >> i've got used to it because i've had to do -- l.a. time, usually i'd there be. >> jimmy: i see. >> 4:00 a.m. sometimes. >> jimmy: i would imagine you are getting asked a lot -- did you watch oprah with meghan and harry the other night? >> i haven't seen it yet. >> jimmy: oh, wow. >> i know already. it came out last night here. obviously everyone's talking about it. >> jimmy: i'm sure you're aware
12:18 am
they said they've seen some of the "the crown." now you're saying you saw none of their interview. [ laughter ] >> i know. i know, i need to watch it, i know. it's quite mad to think that they have actually seen it. that's something that you always imagined but sort of thought, they're probably too busy to watch it. >> jimmy: no, they have nothing to do. they literally have no jobs or nothing to do. [ laughter ] they're sitting in the yard waiting for oprah to visit. >> they've literally binged four seasons in one go. >> jimmy: it is funny, i guess it's better to -- in a way it's probably better for you not to see it because you don't really have to comment on it. i feel like maybe that's what they were saying. because we had a discussion here at the show. there's no way they started watching "the crown" and then said, ah, yeah, we're going to put a pin in that for a while. especially because it's about their family. if somebody made a show about my grandparents, i would watch it. [ laughter ] >> i know. >> jimmy: for sure. >> i know. well, a crazy life concept to
12:19 am
have a show made about literally your grandparents and their lives. and then i guess you know that yours is possibly upcoming. probably. >> jimmy: yeah, i think they're writing the next season themselves is what they're doing right now. [ laughter ] i do want to say congratulations on your nomination for a bafta. [ cheers and applause ] i believe it's today. we're in different time zones, obviously. is that -- you've been nominated for pretty much every award that has come out so far. are you paying close attention, or do they just pop up? do you know when the deadline is, do you know when the announcement is going to be made? >> no, never know when the deadline is. you'd go mad. no, i don't. i don't know. it comes up on my phone, and i've maybe been busy with something else, i haven't seen it. when the globes happend i was four hours late to seeing it. >> jimmy: oh, really? nobody texted you? to let you know? >> no, they did, i was just
12:20 am
doing something, busy, didn't look at my phone. i was late with it. >> jimmy: i think that says a lot about you that you're willing to put your phone aside for four whole hours. [ laughter ] >> i know, i know. i know, when you can't quite, you know -- you can't have it there. >> jimmy: yeah. >> then when you see it, obviously it's -- you know. it's all of it. surreal, jimmy. plus everything's virtual so it's a whole different thing. >> jimmy: that's right. you do -- you have a boston accent in the movie. and is that -- is that like the hardest american accent to do? >> it's -- no, but obviously -- because often you're the only british person in the whole cast. and i was particularly worried in this one about we had to do a 30-minute take straight through --
12:21 am
>> jimmy: for those who haven't seen it, this as one-shot, very detailed, shall we say, birth scene. and yeah, you can't mess that up. can you? >> you can't mess up. and also, it means that -- okay, so this is a rule with actors. if you have something emotional or you have to shout, more often than not, you tend to go into a natural accent. if you have a friend that speaks to their parents, they go into a more native accent. it's that sort of thing. so i worried about that. so i basically just had to stay in accent for about a month leading up to. >> jimmy: the whole month? >> the whole month. and i was staying with some family in new york before we went to film, because we were rehearsing in new york. i said, guys, i'm so sorry, but i'm going to have to stay in accent for the next few weeks. and so i became this different person. it's such a different sensibility, even. and obviously they've known me
12:22 am
for so many years, but it was so strange for them all because i would come down in the morning and i'd just -- so it was just -- it's a very cringy thing to do. [ laughter ] you always feel like such a lame duck, you know. but that was the only thing. because in the birth scene, i had to shout so much, and i had to -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> you know, i had to be completely free to be -- yeah. >> jimmy: do you feel like, do you feel now that you've gone through this filming experience -- i know you don't have a kid. do you feel more or less anxious to go through it in real life? >> yeah, i feel -- i feel like it was a little bit like a dress rehearsal. >> jimmy: uh-huh. >> you know? it was a bit like a really good dress rehearsal. >> jimmy: it was like an undressed rehearsal. did you go and sit in a delivery room to watch it happen, to get a sense of what happens? >> yeah. it's an amazing woman who
12:23 am
allowed me to spend many days in the labor world, we were crawling all over and the midwives were showing me -- these top obstetricians are showing me stuff. >> jimmy: and the women, the moms were okay with you being in there? >> no, well -- i didn't meet my moms until after. >> jimmy: oh. >> because we went coming in different afternoons. i'd always just miss them or whatever. my final day there, one of the midwives came around. she said, a lady's come in, she's 9 centimeters dilated, i'm going to ask if she wouldn't mind if you sat in. i thought, there's no sodding way that this lady, one of the most precious moments of her life, is going to let some random actress sit and be with her. >> jimmy: yeah, yeah. >> but jimmy, remarkably, she did. she said yes.
12:24 am
which is like the most generous thing ever. so i got my own -- i was in my scrubs. and i came and sat, sat down next to her. and she was already in full flow, full power. >> jimmy: yeah. >> she was really just in her complete animal primal stage. >> jimmy: it was the crown is what was happening. [ laughter ] >> it was the crown. and i was just so in awe of her. my mouth was just like -- just like watching her go on this journey for eight hours. and she was just incredible. and obviously then it was getting near the end, and forceps came, and she was just so brave, and she had no painkillers, and it was absolutely amazing. and i was shaking through the whole thing. i didn't go to the loo, i was glued to my seat. and then he came out. and it was just the most -- amazing moment i've ever experienced in my whole life. >> jimmy: did the baby recognize you when he came out? [ laughter ]
12:25 am
>> well, no, the baby didn't. but they did. and i think it was a very weird, surreal moment. >> jimmy: yeah, sure. >> i'm not that recognizable. i have different hair in "the crown." >> jimmy: uh-huh. >> it was only when the sort of haze from her disappeared that she peered at me and, you know -- as i approached she was like -- princess margaret? [ laughter ] i just thought, i'm so sorry. so sorry. i'm not her. but she was, you know -- she was amazing to let me be there. and i owe her so much. >> jimmy: the movie is called "pieces of a woman." it is on netflix now. vanessa kirby. thank you so much, vanessa.
