middle and high school students back to the classroom today. here is a live look outside from the bay bridge toll plaza for some wild weather with hail in some parts of the bay area. we're getting a break from the rain pretty soon. good morning and welcome to thursday, march 11th. let's check in on the weather and start with meteorologist mike nicco. hey, mike. >> good morning, reggie, kumasi, jobina. the key is soon, a couple of hours from now the rain will be over. it is going to leave some slippery conditions so we'll get to jobina in a second. been following real issues this morning. here is a look at where the low pressure is responsible for the wacky weather we have had. it is pulling the rain towards it over the ocean. here is a look at 87, you see light rain is falling and it is wet. light rain falling on the peninsula, there is a picture of sfo and you can see a wet tarmac. even around san rafael, we have a few sprinkles right there, so it is even reaching that far north. not into walnut creek,

here, we had three quarters of an inch of rain, pretty impressive there. we see partly cloudy conditions and mid to upper 50s this afternoon. let's get over to issues. >> thank you, mike. unfortunately the chp has confirmed for us that the sig alert we're following in orinda is a deadly crash. tng you to t map so you can see the area impacted because you're going to face a slowdown as you travel westbound on 24 before fish ranch road. the chp has shut down the wilder off ramp, wilder road off ramp in that area. they have not give an estimated time when all this will reopen. evidence tow truck called out to the scene. i want to really reiterate that it is rough out there, please take your time. reggie? >> jobina, thank you. police in fremont have investigating a death outside an apartment complex. armed officers and s.w.a.t. seen

prevent asymptomatic infections. researchers say unvaccinated people are 44 times more likely to catch covid-19 with symptoms and 22 times more likely to die from covid. the biden administration is looking for places to house a surge of unaccompanied migrant children at the u.s. mexico border. we're learning they're considering a vacant property at moffett field. in a statement to abc 7 news, nasa confirmed that a detention center may be open at their location. however, local advocates say it is not a solution. >> we feel betrayed. i think that's why the conversation is really important, it is going to tackle all the problems. >> the white house insists it is not a crisis and that biden -- the biden administration is trying to implement a more compassionate immigration policy.

this is a first in alameda county since the pandemic started. today middle and high school students in pleasanton will be heading back to the classroom. education is part of our focus to build a better bay area. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is outside foothill high school with the excitement. amy? >> reporter: good morning, kumasi. the parents plan to make a very big deal out of this, starting right here with the welcome back signs here at foothill high school. they also plan to line the streets outside the schools and cheer as the kids head into the classroom. it is their first time here in just about a year. these parents have been active in this issue. this is a rally they held in january, pushing for schools to reopen. and pleasanton got it done. the district says it is the first in the county, alameda county, to welcome back middle and high school students. six campuses will be opening this morning. elementary school kids in the district return to the classroom last week. the superintendent says many

teachers have received at least one dose of the vaccine. and saying they will have an vainated.ty thisga the returning here full time. in order to keep everybody spaced out, they'll have half the kids at home, half the kids at school, and the kids at home will be watching on zoom and they'll rotate that, switch places, every other day, so they will, you know, be able to have some space on campus. this is the hybrid learning plan and they'll have that fifth day will be the asynchronous day. today, a big day, here in this the school district and there will be a lot of celebrating. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. all week long we have been focusing on the learning losses that students have been t b in class, and he'till look a ou hpi ahe country and here in the bay area are reporting a significant increase

in suicidal ideation, that's on abc 7 at 6:00, join us for more open the learning loss happening across the bay area. new this morning, cvs pharmacies adding an additional 11acne sese california. cvs officials say the company will start administering vaccines at those locations as early as sunday and appointments go up starting on saturday. now, the additional sites brings a total number of cvs pharmacies putting vaccines into arms to 286 throughout the state. developing news this morning, lyft is showing solidarity with an uber driver who was attacked in san francisco. the driver in that attack that you see on this video says that he was assaulted andarsed by a passenger who refused to wear a mask. police say one of the passengers pepper sprayed his car. lyft responded to the attack saying, quote, although this incident did not involve the lyft platform, the unacceptable treatment of the driver compelled us to remove the rider

tv, apple tv and android tv. dr. fauci, one of the most prominent faces during this past year, says we are getting closer to a new normal but shouldn't rush it. jobina is at the live desk with more on the progress we have made. jobina? >> thank you, reggie. on "gma" this morning, dr. anthony fauci said as more people get vaccinated, the closer we get to going back to normal. he cautioned it cannot be done too fast. one major concern is the possibility of yet another surge in cases of too many restrictions there lifted. he said it is a mistake that has been repeated multiple times in the last year. >> you want to start pulling back towards normality, which we should be doing. it is much better to do that gradually and prudently instead of just saying, okay, all bets are off, do what you want to do. you have to be careful that you might trigger another surge because that has happened in the past, at least a couple of times over the past year.

students. amy hollyfield is live at foothill high school with the become welcome they have planned. hey, amy. >> reporter: i think they're excited. look behind me at this sign they have here at foothill high school, welcoming the kids back. the parents also plan tool ando as they the first time in about a year. we have seen these parents before. in january, they held a rally pushing for schools to reopen for in person learning and all the pressure paid off, the school district says they are the first district in alameda county to open middle and high schools. and they're able to make this move now because the county entered the red tier this week. six schools here will be opening today. the elementary schools open here last week. this will bes at school, half watcng h switch. that way they can give everyone enough space here at school to stay six feet apart.

it has been about a year since they have been here so the parents and the teachers plan to do what they can to make today special. reporting live in pleasanton, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amy. the south bay santa clara county officials say they have stopped scheduling first dose vaccinations for covid. the appointments for those. county health officials say they found out yesterday they were short 12,000 doses, they expected to get from the state. they say the county notified several thousand kaiser patients who scheduled appointments from march 11th through the 21st. kaiser says they will be reaching out to those members to reschedule their appointments as soon as they can. this comes as county leaders resist a plan that put blue shield in charge of the state's vaccination efforts. this afternoon they will be holding a news conference with the health clinic ceos and city council members. officials are posing this plan because it requires them to hand over con of vaccine distribution to blue shield. instead, county executive jeff

the former minneapolis police officer charged with killing george floyd is going to face an additional charge. a judge has just granted the prosecution's request to reinstate a third degree murder charge against derek chauvin. this adds to the second degree murder and manslaughter charges he already faces. overnight, a defense appeals court denied the defense team's appeal to stop that additional charge. jury selection in the trial continues today and so far five jurors have been chosen. the senate has confirmed president joe biden's nominee for attorney general. merrick garland will lead the u.s. justice department. he says his number one priority to prosecute those responsible for january's attack at the capital. the confirmation comes five
