in brazil has covid deaths hit a new record. the brazilian variant of the virus and other mutations continue to concern doctors in the u.s. >> so we begin with abc's alex presha in washington where the president spoke about the path forward. alex, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. so we've been searching for an end to this national nightmare that is covid-19, so this is certainly good news, but the president's time line is dependent on vaccinations and he's laying out his goals for those as well. >> finding light in the darkness is a very american thing to do. >> reporter: in his first prime time address, president joe biden outlining his plan for a return to normal directing states to make all american adults eligible for a vaccine by may 1st. the president telling americans, if they do their part by wearing masks, social distancing and getting vaccinated when possible, there's a chance that we can gather safely in small groups by july 4th. >> after this long, hard year, that will make this independence

day something truly special where we not only mark our independence as a nation, but we begin to mark our independence from this virus. >> reporter: the white house announcing the military will have a total of 6,000 troops backing vaccination programs and that the number of community health centers and pharmacies giving out vaccines will dramatically expand. people will have two new ways to schedule appointments. a federally supported website and an 800 number. >> very important that people go to the website www.coronavirus.gov to find out where in your state you can get the vaccine and how to register because i think that's the biggest thing. people don't know where to go. >> reporter: the president's address coming exactly one year after the declaration of the global coronavirus pandemic. it also comes on the same day biden signed one of the largest economic rescue packages in our

nation's history. >> this historic legislation is about rebuilding the backbone of this country and giving people in this nation, working people, middle class folks, people who built the country a fighting chance. >> reporter: the new law will give most americans $1,400 checks, extend unemployment benefits through early september at $300 a week, provide funding for vaccinations and testing, help for small businesses and billions of dollars in housing assistance. those checks could start hitting as soon as this weekend, and this is biden's first major legislative achievement passing without a single republican vote even though a pew poll shows that 70% of americans support it. >> alex, thank you. a volunteer in the first vaccine trial for pregnant women is now speaking out. expectant mothers were excluded from earlier trials, but now 4,000 pregnant women are enrolled in a study for pfizer to make sure the company's shot is safe for both mother and baby. abc's erielle reshef spoke exclusively to an idaho woman

enrolled in the trial. >> if there is any way to get rid of this covid, it's to do these studies, and sometimes you have to be the guinea pig to figure it out, and i'm perfectly fine with being that guinea pig. the study will also see if there is a transfer of covid-fighting antibodies from mother to child. back in washington two bills aimed at strengthening gun laws have passed the house with bipartisan support. one bill would require background checks for all firearm sales, and the other would extend the review period for background checks from three to ten days. now, a handful of house republicans supported these bills but their fate is uncertain in the senate where 60 votes are needed. still democrats are hopeful. >> in 2019 we were engaged in some pretty detailed discussions about a background checks bill. republicans were calling me up, senate republicans, saying, listen, you know, i'm tired of fighting this. i want to get right on this issue of background checks. i think we might have some surprising support from

republicans for a strong background checks bill. >> connecticut senator chris murphy has been pushing for change since the sandy hook elementary school shooting in his home state. the latest allegations against new york governor andrew cuomo has been referred to the local police sparking new calls for him to step down. the governor's office made the referral after cuomo's sixth accuser claimed that he groped her. cuomo denies touching anyone inappropriately. at least 121 state lawmakers including 65 democrats say the governor should resign. he's also facing an impeachment investigation. "the wall street journal" reports cuomo aides have been trying to discredit one of his accusers but a top aide denies any intimidation. now to the growing controversy at a prestigious law school. a professor at georgetown has been caught on camera making racist comments, and now she's out of a job. this morning, new fallout at georgetown after a law professor's remarks on race were recorded and posted online.

>> they were a bit jumbled. >> reporter: a student shared what two professors thought was a private zoom meeting after class. professor sandra sellers is heard discussing the performance of black students. >> i mean, it was, i hate to say this, i end up having this, you know, angst every semester that a lot of my lower ones are blacks, happens almost every semester. >> reporter: the other mostly silent appearing to nod - his head. >> it's like, oh, come on, you know. i get some really good ones, but there are also some that are just plain at the bottom. it drives me crazy. >> reporter: the school has now fired sellers and placed batson on leave pending an investigation. the dean calls the conversation reprehensible and abhorrent adding, the termination and investigation is by no means the end of our work to address the many structural issues of racism reflected in this painful incident.

sellers taught at the school for nearly 20 years, and the georgetown black law students association is now demanding an audit of professor sellers' past grading and student evaluations. >> i was shocked but not surprised. >> reporter: professor anthony cook also teaches at georgetown law. he says the school's response was appropriate. >> i think we're moving on now to try to see if we can figure out what systemic and structural changes might be made to prevent this kind of thing or to limit the extent to which it happens again. >> and we reached out to both professors in the video. batson has not replied, and sellers told us, no comment. in her resignation letter, however, she said she is deeply sorry. former minneapolis police officer derek chauvin now faces a third count of murder in the death of george floyd. the judge in chauvin's trial has reinstated a third degree murder charge. he's already charged with second degree murder and manslaughter. the judge's ruling provides a

middle ground option for the jury. 6 out of the 12 jurors have now been selected. well, history will be made when the march madness basketball tournament tips off next week. lisa byington will become the first ever woman play-by-play announcer for the men's tournament. she's been a reporter during tournament games since 2017. the madness begins next thursday. time now for a look at your friday morning weather. a major late winter storm is moving into the rockies. it could dump five feet of snow in the mountains this weekend. officials in colorado are telling people to stay off the roads. denver could get two feet of snow. high winds are also expected raising the possibility of power outages. severe storms are also expected in the plains tomorrow. checking today's high temperatures, 55 degrees in kansas city. 70s across the south. around 60 along the west coast. similar warmth in the northeast. 70, washington, d.c.

slammed into a bus and exploded in central mexico. at least 12 people have been killed. eight others are injured. a new report explains a bizarre security breach at joint base andrews where air force one is kept. the inspector general of the air force says an intruder went undetected for hours last month as he roamed the base and walked onto a plane. he was detained after someone noticed his pink hat out of place. it turns out a security guard had allowed the man to drive onto the base without credentials. he said he just wanted to see the planes. and the company behind coors light and miller lite beer is recovering from a cyberattack. molson coors says the attack caused an outage that disrupted its brewery and shipment operations. it's unclear which beer brands are affected. an investigation is under way. we turn now to the grammys just three days before the big show. one of the top singers in the country is now boycotting the awards blasting them for being biased. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> reporter: this morning, the
