first a lot to get to here. a major storm targeting the central u.s. this weekend with near blizzard conditions across the rockies and the high plains. the storm also bringing severe weather with three reported tornadoes hitting texas already and more tornadoes will be possible today. colorado's governor activating the national guard to help with potential search and rescue efforts. in preparation for the storm, people rushed to food banks and denver opened up extra homeless shelters. hundreds of flights have been canceled. colorado state health officials say because of the storm vaccinations have been postponed for more than 10,000 people. so let's go back to rob right there in denver tracking all of this for us this morning. rob, good morning once again. >> reporter: hey, good morning, dan. it hasn't started snowing yet, but they're taking the storm very seriously. the biggest storm here since 2003. they've already activated the national guard. they're warning people to stay

home if you can. this is the cold side of the storm. the warm side has had impacts already. three tornados touching down in the panhandle and tearing apart farm structures there. nobody hurt luckily. it looks dicey today. some storms had heavy rain with them. cohn, texas seeing some potential downpours. we'll see a flash flood threat today across the northern part of system. there you see the flooding range across parts of missouri. the snow is cranking in colorado later this afternoon. the winds blowing tonight in cheyenne and eastern nebraska. western nebraska we have blizzard warnings posted. now an enhanced risk has been updated to a moderate risk for tornados in that red area near amarillo, stretching over to parts of oklahoma. then a big area seeing a slight risk of seeing storms that will create damaging winds and hail. good slice of texas there.

this storm presses off to the east. the snow continues through tomorrow night and weakening as it pushes off to the east. one to two feet of wet snow in denver. two to four feet across the i-25 corridor. this is going to be a crippling storm. guys? >> rob, thank you for that. now to our covid stimulus package. direct deposits are already landing in bank accounts and president biden about to tour the country to tell americans how this new package can help their families. let's go back to abc's white house correspondent maryalice parks on the north lawn. good morning again, maryalice. >> reporter: good morning, eva. as you said, president biden's covid relief package already seems to be taking effect. some americans this weekend starting to see those direct payments already hitting their bank accounts. president biden, he's home in wilmington and definitely went into this weekend feeling good, on a high note feeling hopeful, but also pivoting. he says that he knows the real work starts now. that his team needs to deliver

on the promises in this package. they need to get funds out the door quickly to americans. the irs, for example, told us on a call last night that they're very aware some of the most vulnerable americans in the country had a hard time accessing those direct payments last time. so this time they're making changes. they're working with the social security administration, the v.a. and trying to get more payments out directly straight into bank accounts electronically. they're also going to be on a messaging campaign urging americans who don't normally file taxes to consider doing that this time around. and next week president biden, the vice president, the first lady, all of them, they're hitting the road like you said. they want to make sure they're actively involved in getting the word out. they want to tell americans exactly what's in this package. they're going to be talking about things like food assistance, rental assistance. the president himself, he's headed to pennsylvania and georgia. guys? >> all right, maryalice, thank you so much. still ahead here, the

the "west side story" cast is proving that true in honor of their 60th anniversary. the original actors from the 1961 oscar-winning film are set to reunite for the turner classic movies film festival. rita moreno a/k/a anita, and george chakiris a/k/a bernardo coming together to present a special screening of "west side story." both won an oscar for their performances while the movie won a whopping ten academy awards, the most of any movie musical and was deemed culturally significant by the library of congress. the turner classic movie festival is set to take place virtually may 6th to may 9th. a story i th relate to. a lot of people took on projects

during quarantine over the last basement. after their local family video store shut down in march 2020, this husband decided to buy up all their shelving and old vhs tapes to create a store in his basement, as his wife said, instead of finishing our kitchen cabinets. this retro extravaganza comes complete with rows of dvds and places for movie memorabilia and in the back a movie viewing room complete with recliners and retro video games. you guys cannot see this but i have a couple of movie theater reclining chairs in my room that are storage right now. no vhs tapes. what about you, guys, are you doing renovations like this in your homes? >> not quite like that but i do miss the video store. remember that? yh. -- >> the popcorn. >> go to the video store, pick out the vhs, yeah, good times. >> haven't done that in like ten years. >> i miss morse code and the telegraph too.

"new york times" best-seller list. tell us about it. >> yes, "klara and the sun" by kazuo ishiguro. he's a heavy weight author. he's won aratureet me " and ear "klara and the sun" is probably going to be adapted very soon as well as a film. this story is about artificial intelligence, or a.i., as they call it in the know. you know, machines that are like us and in "klara" this machine is trying to figure out what it means to be human and by reading it you get a better insight of what it means to be in touch with our humanity. so it's a good read and kick your feet up and dig into this one. >> and george's interview with kazuo ishiguro will be on "gma" next week as well. so more on that, but now to music's big night, the grammys tomorrow night. what are we looking for in this year's show?

>> so excited. music's biggest night. i'm looking forward to trevor noah hosting this year, of "the daily show." he has been filming from home in sweats. so i'm excited to see him in a tux and what he's going to do with the show but also the performances. we are getting some live performances. there will be a virtual element. no audience, but there will be superstars hitting the stage, billie eilish, bts, taylor swift all performing in like a circle of five stages. you're going to get the show that you've been missing in terms of awards season and i am really excited for some nominees. dua lipa, she had the album that was just my pandemic soundtrack. it was so fun. and then also jhene aiko. so she's kind of a slow burn. i've always loved her but to get this level of recognition for her album, i'm so excited to see what she's able to do on sunday night.

first up, the must have food you should always have on hand. cookbook author and food blogger brandi crawford joins us with the list. brandi, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> so everybody has found something in their fridge at some point or another that qualifies as an unregulated science experiment. it's completely disgusting and been there for seven years. what should we do when we find something like that and how do we prevent this from happening? >> yes, so refreshing your fridge will save you so much money in the long run. previously i would just go out and buy things i already had on hand at home. so now i make my shopping list and i take inventory prior to going to the grocery store. it will help cut down on food waste and also so much better for the environment. >> what are in your opinion the must haves for the fridge? >> yeah, i love to keep mixed greens and spinach,

strawberries, blueberries, mushrooms, onions, avocados, zucchini, love to keep those on hand. you can use them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. you can make stir fries and smoothies and salads. you can pair that fresh fruit with yogurt and i love to eat avocado toast for breakfast every morning so those avocados really get good use. >> i have a colleague, i don't want to name any names but her initials are eva pilgrim, and she is very into organizing her fridge. she uses the dewey decimal system and alphabetizing. what are your thoughts how we can sanely organize our fridges? >> for starters if your fridge has crisper drawers, definitely you take advantage and use those. these help keep produce fresh for longer. i also recommend you keep your greens at eye level so that when you open up that fridge, you can see that you have those greens on hand and you can incorporate those into your meals.
