grammy. >> queen bey has now won more grammys than any other singer in history, and at 9 years old, her daughter became the second youngest person to win a grammy. apple doesn't fall far. >> got it from your momma. congratulations to them both. we'll have more on music's biggest night coming up, but we begin with that major storm slamming the west. parts of colorado and wyoming. denver's airport shut down as thousands of flights are canceled. rob marciano joins us now from aurora, colorado, with where the threat is now. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, michael. we though this would be a crippling snowstorm for denver. that's exactly what we got. what an harrowing 18 hours it's been. this is not a parking lot this is highway near the denver airport. these are all stranded cars. the airport is just about two miles away.

a lot of the cars here belong to families that were at the airport, flights got cancelled. they left the airport to find a hotel, blinding snow, stuck here until police could come and get them a rescue. a massive winter storm wreaking havoc in the american west. wyoming and colorado slammed by a historic blizzard. treacherous road conditions leaving drivers helpless on i-25. several cars trapped in ditches. this good samaritan able to pull one vehicle to safety. rescue crews responding to those stranded in their vehicles. this man and his family were stuck on the highway after their flight got canceled. >> all of a sudden, the storm took hold and we got stranded with about 20 other cars. >> reporter: all runways shutting down at denver international airport, where the snowfall reached at least 27 inches, making it the fourth largest snowstorm on record for the city. just outside of boulder, the snow is well past my knees.

these vehicles nearly completely buried, and it's still coming down. just north of cheyenne, wyoming, 30 inches of snow. the biggest two days of snowfall ever recorded. travel brought to a standstill as highways there shut down. and in utah, four skiers rescued after an avalanche. >> tornado touching down. tornado on the ground. >> reporter: the same system spawning more than a dozen reported tornadoes in the texas panhandle. two possible twisters leaving rvs flipped on their heads, and piles of debris southeast of amarillo. heavy equipment's been working this all morning long. still not clear. the police department has been rolling through here, still rescuing people who have been stranded in their cars for over 12 hours now and we're not quite done with this storm yet. winter storm warnings east of here. where heavy snow will fall from this system next and next system coming in will have high impacts as well. ginger will have more on that in a bit.

we go to the border now where the migrant crisis is growing again. overcrowded facilities after a 25% surge in border crossings by unaccompanied minors in the last week. president biden deployed fema to handle the surge over the weekend. our chief white house correspondent cecilia vega reports from our border facility in donna, texas. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: hi, george, good morning to you. we have been repeatedly denied access to facilities like this one behind me. the administration citing covid and privacy concerns, but this morning we are getting our first glimpse inside, and these allegations being raised are disturbing. this morning, inside these massive tents along the southern border, hundreds of migrant children waking up in crowded conditions without their parents. lawyers who recently went inside tell me the overcrowding is so severe some children don't have beds and are forced to sleep on the floor. one girl telling them she hadn't showered in six days. how young are we talking? >> we saw the whole spectrum, from 1 to 17. >> reporter: our cameras not allowed in. the border patrol handing out its own footage when the facility opened last month.

the lawyers say 45 to 50 children share a space like this. >> that is where they would spend their entire day. they did tell us that every few days, they were allowed to go into a courtyard for about 20 minutes, but it seems that some children would go longer than that without seeing the sun. >> reporter: they say siblings of opposite genders who traveled together were separated upon arrival. some children saying they haven't been allowed to call their parents. this new video showing the surge at the border. sources telling abc news the more than 4,200 children currently in custody is at record levels, up 25% from last week alone. authorities detaining more than 500 kids a day, kids who made a long and dangerous journey alone. the system so overwhelmed the biden administration has called on fema to help take in house and transport kids to other

child-friendly facilities. but inside these tents, lawyers saying the kids are being held way past the three-day legal limit, some up to a full week. and even though many of the children have family north of the border, but those kids can't be reunited with those family members because of the bureaucratic red tape. they believe the biden administration is trying to do the humane thing here, but they'd like to see these kids get to their families fasters to get rid of some of that bureaucratic red tape. we have asked for an official response to the allegations that these lawyers raised. the white house kicked us over to dhs. dhs kicked us over to customs and border protection. we don't have an official response, george. >> in the meantime, the surge keeps on coming. what's behind it? >> reporter: well, it's just so complicated. there certainly is a perception that it might be easier to cross

under the biden administration, but george, also the biden administration isn't kicking these kids back across the border alone like the trump administration did. all of that is making for an extremely heartbreaking situation. >> cecilia, thanks very much. i'll be heading to philadelphia tomorrow for an exclusive interview with president biden. that will air wednesday on "gma." amy? turning now to the latest on the coronavirus emergency and fears of a spring break surge. nearly 70 million people in the u.s. have now received at least 1 vaccine dose. that's 27% of the adult population, but we're now seeing an uptick in air travel as well. the tsa screening an average of more than 1 million people a day. gio benitez joins us now from newark airport with more on all of this. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, amy. good morning to you. yeah, dr. anthony fauci warning over the weekend that we shouldn't be relaxing too many public health measures just yet, but already we are seeing some massive crowds gather, and air travel is hitting some new records during this pandemic. this morning, health officials

are concerned that a hike in spring break travel could lead to another covid surge across the country. these scenes in some parts of the country alarming health officials from texas to florida, and georgia, where over the weekend, thousands gathered in savannah to celebrate st. patrick's day. >> we're here for a good time, not a long time. >> reporter: large groups, little social distancing, few masks in sight. on friday, more than 1.3 million people were screened at u.s. airports, the most since the start of the pandemic, and this was the scene in dallas on saturday. the first weekend since texas lifted its statewide mask mandate and allowed businesses to reopen at 100% capacity, but the lifting of the mask mandate also leading to tense confrontations. businesses are allowed to require masks, but this woman refusing to wear one inside a bank of america in galveston. >> relax. >> i'm totally relaxed. >> no, you are not relaxed. not relaxed at all.

>> no, it's not. >> wow, what a bunch of sheep. >> reporter: meanwhile, vaccination rates are on the rise, but health officials are still urging people not to let their guard down. this pennsylvania woman who has an underlying condition was just three days away from getting her first dose when she was struck with covid. >> i didn't lose my chance forever, but i lost a good chunk of time where i could have started protecting myself and my family by getting the vaccine. >> reporter: meanwhile, dr. fauci also points to a new study that suggests that 3 feet of social distancing in schools may be enough. he says the cdc will be issuing some new guidance very, very soon, michael. >> we'll be looking forward to that, gio. thank you so much. and now to the escalating political crisis with new york governor andrew cuomo who is facing growing calls for his resignation by members of his own party as another woman accuses him of inappropriate conduct. stephanie ramos is outside the

governor's new york city office with the latest this morning. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning, michael. it was business as usual for new york governor andrew cuomo, this weekend releasing statements about the the covid vaccine all while a seventh woman came forward accusing him of inappropriate behavior. her name is jessica bakeman. she's a former statehouse reporter in albany, and she wrote in "new york" magazine that while posing for a photo at a holiday party at the governor's mansion in 2014, he grabbed her hand, asked if she felt uncomfortable, and he thought they were going steady. seven women have now accused the governor of either sexual harassment or inappropriate touching. cuomo has denied ever touching anyone inappropriately, for weeks asking new yorkers to wait for the state's attorney general's investigation before forming an opinion. president biden asked over the weekend whether cuomo should resign, and he agreed. we should wait to see the investigation's outcome.

>> and stephanie, many new york lawmakers have already made up their mind that cuomo should resign. >> reporter: they have, michael. 16 out of the 19 house democrats in new york's delegation have called on cuomo to resign. both new york senators, chuck schumer and kirsten gillibrand initially said an independent investigation into the allegations made against cuomo was essential, but now they're also saying he should step down. cuomo has called that move, resigning before an investigation is complete, anti-democratic. michael. >> thank you very much. now the oscars. chris connelly has the details on hollywood's golden night. >> awards show are back in a big way from last night's musical performances at the grammys to this morning's historymaking oscars nominations. the late chadwick boseman, an academy award nominee this morning as the nominations were announced this morning.

one of the girls speaking to us saying, at first she was afraid no one would believe her. this morning, a pennsylvania mom is facing charges for allegedly making and sending doctored photos and deep fake videos of her teenage daughter's cheerleading rivals. >> the essence of it was to knock them down, to make them appear that they were not law-abiding, that their morals were corrupted. essentially to try to shame them or get them knocked off the team. >> reporter: police say in july of 2020, 50-year-old raffaela without her daughter's knowledge, sent digitally altered photos of the girl appearing naked, drinking and smoking. the cheer mom denies any wrongdoing. this girl was 16 years old when one of her coaches pulled her aside after this video

apparently showed her vaping, a violation of rules. >> i got in my car and i started crying. i thought if i said it, i thought no one would believe me. there's proof, like, it's a video, but that video was obviously manipulated. >> reporter: maddie eventually telling her mother someone had been sending manipulated photos of herself with this text mention. when she texted back, who is this? she received a generic response from a texting app that lets you choose your own phone number. >> it had actually been going on for awhile, but i didn't know about it. i told her i'm going to call the police because i wanted her to know that's how much i believed her. >> reporter: police say they traced the calls back to raffaela's home linking her to the messages. >> there was a lot of masking, a lot of spoofing, a lot of cloaking going on, and this is something unfortunately we're seeing all too -- all too frequently now. >> reporter: with technological advances, so-called "deep fakes" are becoming more and more

common. >> i'm going to show you some magic. >> reporter: this digitally manipulated video went viral on tiktok appearing to show tom cruise doing a magic trick. experts say creating these kinds of videos has become much easier. >> we are now starting to see apps that will just do it for you. so you simply download an app, you upload a few images to that, and it'll generate it for you. >> reporter: she is facing three one year behind bars for three counts of cyber harassment if convicted. >> because of the fact that this has now hit the press, she has received death threats and she's had to go to police herself. >> reporter: and she is expected back in court at the end of the month. her attorney tells us they have not seen any of the evidence as of yet, but they plan to 100% fight these charges, guys. >> wow. what an appalling and scary story, eva. thank you. michael. >> yeah. really scary.

thank you, amy. now to that abc exclusive interview with the brother of ghislaine maxwell, the former girlfriend of jeffrey epstein accused of grooming underaged girls for abuse. it's the first time maxwell's family is speaking out on camera since her arrest last year. james longman with the latest. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, michael. ghislaine maxwell is accused of finding and grooming underaged girls to be sexually abused by her ex-boyfriend, jeffrey epstein. she is now in jail awaiting trial. that's set to begin this summer, but her family is now speaking out for the first time saying they believe she's innocent, and tey're angry about conditions in jail. ghislaine maxwell's brother speaking out. his sister behind bars, awaiting trial after pleading not guilty to charges she allegedly helped sex offender jeffrey epstein recruit and groom underaged victims in the 199s. >> do you see why there might be public sympathy for her? >> well, i think that's being whipped up actually by a lynch

mob media performance. i'm not minimizing the seriousness of the allegations, but my sister is fighting for her life, and that's pretty serious too. >> reporter: maxwell became a fixture on the new york social scene in the '90s after the death of her father, robert maxwell, disgraced media mogul. she turned heads for her relationship with the mysterious financier jeffrey epstein. >> you know, my father was a prominent -- extraordinary man in his own right. so she had grown up in that world, and was, you know, able to move in it very freely. >> you knew about her friendship with jeffrey? >> i only met him once at a party. i had no knowledge of their life. >> reporter: ian maxwell says he last saw his sister in june of 2019 when all maxwell children were together in london as seen in this photo provided to abc news. it was just before epstein's surprise arrest. >> arrested saturday for alleged

accused of grooming three of epstein's underaged victims knowing he wanted to abuse them. the alleged misconduct going back two decades. >> suddenly, he dies and they've got this really serious problem. they've got the victims of abuse, the prime target and opportunity to question them. it seems to me inescapable that the authorities decided they had to do something about it. >> reporter: in court documents, the government says maxwell had an essential role in sexual exploitation to cause deep and lasting harm. ghislaine is now spending her ninth month behind bars. her first two bail requests have been denied. >> ghislaine maxwell is presumed innocent, and yet we're treating her as she is guilty, as though she's been convicted. >> she's lost 20 pounds. she's losing her hair. she can't concentrate. she has a flashlight shown in her cell every 15 minutes during the night. so she has no sleep of any real quality. that is torture. why is ghislaine maxwell being

through this mud. again, these are stranded vehicles. the denver airport just two miles away and a lot of the vehicles belong to people who are stranded at the airport because their flights were cancelled. they got stuck here until police could come and rescue them. in colorado, treacherous road conditions leaving drivers helpless on i-25. several cars trapped in ditches. this good samaritan able to pull one vehicle to safety. rescue crews responding to those stranded in their vehicles. this man and his family were stuck on the highway after their flight got canceled. >> all of a sudden, the storm took hold, and we got stranded with about 20 other cars. >> reporter: all runways shutting down at denver international airport where the snowfall reached at least 27 inches, making it the fourth largest snowstorm on record for the city. just outside boulder, this snow is well past my knees. these vehicles nearly completely buried. it is still coming down.

handle the surge over the weekend. we want to go back to cecilia vega at a border facility in texas. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: george, good morning again. the administration is not letting us inside facilities but i spoke to two lawyers who did go in, and they are describing a very desperate situation inside. this morning, inside these massive tents along the southern border, hundreds of migrant children waking up in crowded conditions without their parents. lawyers who recently went inside tell me the overcrowding is so severe some children don't have beds and are forced to sleep on the floor. one girl telling them she hadn't showered in six days. how young are we talking? >> we saw the whole spectrum, from 1 to 17. >> reporter: our cameras not allowed in. the border patrol handing out its own footage when the facility opened last month. the lawyers say 45 to 50 children share a space like this. >> that is where they would spend their entire day. they did tell us that every few

days they were allowed to go into a courtyard for about 20 minutes, but it seems that some children would go longer than that without seeing the sun. >> reporter: they say siblings of opposite genders who traveled together were separated upon arrival. some children saying they haven't been allowed to call their parents. this new video showing the surge at the border. sources telling abc news there are more than 4,200 children in custody at record levels. up 25% from last week alone. authorities detaining more than 500 kids a day, kids who made a long and dangerous journey alone. the system so overwhelmed the biden administration has called on fema to help take in, house and transport kids to more child-friendly facilities. now these kids are only supposed to be held in a facility like this one here behind me for up to three days max, but the lawyers telling me kids are being held up to a week.

♪ the oscars nominations, you just heard them right here. let's get more instant reaction from chris connelly and elizabe elizabe elizabeth wagmeister. let's start out with the best actor and actress categories. chris, lets me start with you. anything surprise you there? >> i was surprise dpli unsurprised by the nominations in these categories. they pretty much went as expected. i think chadwick boseman has to be considered the favorite in his considered as best actor. pi think that was a dominant performance and one we'll always cherish along with his memory. best actress is maybe the best this year, and it's packed with great performances, and any one of these five could win it, i think. >> any big misses, elizabeth? >> you know, i think as chris said in both of these categories, they were pretty much expected.

these ones as i was going through my checklist, i was saying, this is exactly what we predicted and to chris' point, i think the best actress category is just jam packed. i want to point out that viola davis is officially the most nominated black actress of all-time. so she has won for best supporting in the past, but we'll see if she can take it away for the best actress. >>

♪ shining star ♪ we are back with more on the oscars nominations with chris connelly and "variety's" elizabeth wagmeister. chris, i'll start with you. "mank," the movie with the most nominations. what do you make of that? >> yeah, i think this was kind of expected. i mean, this is a movie with a big budget, david fincher the director. he likes to do a lot of cases. in some cases, 100, some even say 200. the production value was really high. remember, we didn't see a lot of heavy budgeted movies coming out

in 2020 because of the pandemic. it did really well with academy voters across the board, particularly in some of those craft nominations where the attention to detail and the things that fincher insists on in his movies really paid off for him. >> you mentioned this, chris. pretty much no one went to the movie theaters this past year. so how does the academy get people at home excited about watching this? >> well, i think that's kind of why the oscar nominations hope to start the clock in terms of getting people to watch these things. there was a lot of competition even in a pandemic year. you had things lik like "wandavision," and "the mandalorian" showing on your home screen which was the only place to see these screens. nobody comes in to tell you to turn off your cell phone before the movie starts. >> you're in my living room, chris. what kind of history do we expect to be made this year? >> you know, i think that we are going to see a lot of diversity. as chris said, it was a shame in

the best picture category to see films like "one night in miami" and "ma rainey's black bottom" snubbed, especially when there could have been up to ten films in that category, and only eight were nominated. that being said, we are seeing a lot of diversity in terms of cultural backgrounds and in terms of gender this year, and coming after the golden globes with the big scandal with the hfpa, i think it's very clear that the academy really wants to do the right thing this year, and we did see that reflected in the nominations. >> well, we are very excited to have the one and only leslie odom jr. on the phone with us. congratulations. tell us how you're feeling. >> thank you so -- thank you so much. i am -- how am i feeling? startled awake. i'm in a dark, quiet house in los angeles. i'm feeling -- feeling just amazing this morning. >> what a great way the wake up though, right? >> i'll say. they can wake me up like this any time. >> well, leslie, you already won

a tony. you won a grammy. does it feel any different being nominated for an oscar? >> it definitely does. i -- i left the broadway stage y four, five years ago, and i started this journey in film just really -- i wanted to learn how to be on camera. i wanted to learn if i could be useful in this -- in this medium, and thanks to regina king and kemp powers and, you know, this film, i really do feel like i'm on my way, you know, it feels like a good beginning. >> beginning. that's some beginning. i'll say. tell us about sam cook. >> oh, man. sam cook is the greatest there ever was. >> yep. >> and this movie tells the story about a really special night where there's no victory clay in miami, february of 1964,

and he wins his first heavyweight championship bout against sonny liston, and he spends the night hanging out in the hotel room with closest friends who just happen to be malcolm x, jim brown and sam cook. kemp powers has turned that night that has since become legend into the beautiful screenplay for "one night in miami." >> so how are you going to top that now with your celebration for this oscar nomination? i know it's a little early right now. >> i am going to -- what am i going to do? are there any chairs open at "good morning america"? i got to try to become -- i think that's the only -- that's the only place that tops this. one of those chairs. >> i'm curious since we woke you up -- literally we woke you up, who do you expect the next call to be from? >> well, my parents -- we're expecting a little baby any day
