women. they arrested the suspected gunman following a pursuit. he is 21-year-old robert long. the investigators say there is no immediate indication of a motive. the police say they are increasing patrols around similar businesses. >> i don't want to stay in the bay area. it is not safe for me and my family. i would be afraid for all of the people living in the pay area, especially asian americans. new at 11:00, yet another violent attack on an asian american person in the bay area. the latest happened in san francisco on market street in brood daylight. >> good even. abc 7 news reporter spoke to that vehicle. we will warn you that some of the images you are about to see are graphic. >> somebody push me from the back and started hitting me. and i lose consciousness. when i wake up i am all blooded up. >> reporter: 59-year-old man, eyes are bruised and swollen shut after being attacked is describing what happened near 3rd and market street in san francisco. one of the latest attacks to

leave an asian american injured. >> i got two black k k k k k k think, i can not see from the left. they did not take anything. i did not lose anything. i think this is a hate crime. >> reporter: while he believes he was targeted for being a chinese/filipino man the police say there is nothing to indicate that it was motivated by bias but also not giving a motive. the attack happened in this area on monday. the first day chong, a travel agent commuting outside of the city, was back at work since the start of the pandemic. he now fears san francisco is going to try to move near family in indiana or nevada. >> san francisco is deteriorating right now. we should -- old san francisco is gone. it is a dangerous place to walk. it is not safe anymore. >> reporter: the police tell

protesters last may. one protester seriously injured. the naacp filed a lawsuit against the city of san jose representing demonstrators from that protest. >> the violent interactions that the police department had with residents does come from leadership. our hope is that this leadership really begins with reconciliation. >> i think tony is a person who is not a big showboat. he is not a big talker but he is a doer and people will understand that about him. >> in san jose, back to you. moving on now, san mateo county reached the orange tier that allows for indoor activities and increased capacity. it is the first county to reach orange since last fall. most areas near red after coming down from purple. one of the changes will be at restaurants with indoor capacity going up to 50% now. the same goes for movie theaters, gyms allowed to operate at 25% capacity. a restaurant owner tells us

that the timing is perfect. >> and the weather has been cold and now to have the facility to have tables inside it is beautiful. yes. very good. >> san francisco and marin counties could move to the orange tier next week. tonight, a major step forward, protecting the youngest americans from coronavirus. moderna is starting to test the vaccine on children from 6- months old up to 12 years old. the first u.s. vaccine maker to test on infants. to find the right dose of the vaccine for children, moderna researchers will divide a group of 7,000 volunteers by age. testing it in kids 6-11 followed by 2-year-olds and 6- year-olds and then children six months to two years old. >> teenagers down to as young as 12 to get the vaccine by this summer. i think the children less than that, say six years of age and younger probably not seeing vaccines until the end of the

year. >> france, germany and sweden are among more than a dozen countries to suspended the use of the astrazena vaccine. a small number of blood clots, some of which caused death. the numbers are 37 cases in 17 million vaccinations. now, let's also talk about other numbers for you. more than 11 million people have received that vaccine in britain and there have been no reports of serious reactions. the first in the bay area to open vaccinations up to residents 50 years of age and older. county health officials have an effort to fill up appointment slots that are unused. all slots are filled change. it is possible the amount of stress you are in can effect your vaccine. we spoke to a local researcher who is recuting for a study to assess all of the life factors

when it comes to covid-19 immunity. >> reporter: the strength of the covid-19 vaccine may have more to do with you, your body and your lifestyle than you expected. >> what we know from the vaccine is that stress, particularly major stress dampens the immune response. >> reporter: ucsf professor is launching a study to see how stress, age and sleep effect the immune response. >> we think getting seven hours of sleep a night are critical. when people joined our study they take a close look at the different stressful situations in their life. >> reporter: study participants will under go three blood draws in seven months. the first one before the vaccine to determine a baseline antibody level and the second and the third draws will have peak antibody response and length of protection. >> it will help us identify groups who may need boosters.

>> reporter: another factor that could influence immune response is obesity. >> it has been known for decades that people who are obese have defective level of antibody production in response to vaccines. >> down-the-line if you have obesity or another high-risk health risk might you get a booster sooner than someone without those conditions? >> we will see what happens with covid-19. it may be that we are all getting new shots because of the new variants. >> reporter: the stud selooking for a diverse group of participants that will get paid. we have more information on website. i'm kate larson. a year into the pandemic we are focused on the path forward. the businesses that are thriving right now. and it is part of the fun. what you likely will not be allowed to do the next time you

down. president joe biden, the news making exclusive tomorrow on abc's good morning america. covid-19 hit home a year ago this week when the bay area started to shelter in place. the economy is just one aspect that changed so dramatically because of the pandemic. many of the small businesses had to shift to stay afloat and in some cases the change was for the better. >> reporter: we talked to small business owners around the bay area and they have a look how they created a path going forward. >> reporter: this was march, 2020. >> monday was the worst day for the markets since 1987. >> reporter: since then i have been covering the economic impact of covicovi including the financial problems of small businesses. the number went down 3.3 million from february to april in 2020. according to research found in the national library of medicine. a yelp study found 800 small

businesses are closing every day. we need more data to fully understand the scope of the pandemic's impact but it is incredible watching people beat the odds. many business owners have not only adapted by making masks. >> we have purple rain, let it go. >> reporter: or starting a distance picnic or in this case park-nic's companies, many are thriving in this environment. >> so for the past dozen or so years i owned a barbershop in downtown around union square. and, business was great. the pandemic really changed how i had to go about doing business. with the uncertainties of reopening and closures, you know, the best idea for me was to ask myself how do i get my business back to my clients? and the mobile barbershop was the perfect solution. >> good-bye brick and mortar and hello van.

quarter to 3/4s of an inch. gusts, 30-40 for the hills. here is the hour by hour forecast. commute time, unfortunately is when the rain is coming in. 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. heading into 4:00 p.m. we will see moderate pockets of rain indicated by the yellows there. really continues into the night and scattered showers for your friday. it is not going to be a lot of rain on friday. most of it will fall on thursday. certainly some snow in the mountain which is is coming up here in just a moment. rainfall totals about a quarter to a third of an inch as i said. two thirds of an inch around santa rosa, calastoga. the winter storm watch, 12:00 thursday afternoon in the mountains until about saturday morning about 5,000 feet. expecting 15 inches for the highest peaks. accu-weather forecast, saint patrick's day is looking nice.
