socially distance because not everyone by july 4th will have been vaccinated. >> how do you get the politics out of this vaccine talk? >> i honest to god thought we had it out. i honest to god thought that once we guaranteed we had enough vaccine for everybody, things would start to calm down. well, they have calmed down a great deal, but i just don't understand this sort of macho thing about i'm not going to get the vaccine. i have a right as an american, my freedom to not do it. why not be a patriot and protect other people? >> how has life changed for you since you got the vaccine? >> i can hug my grandkids now. they come over to the house. i can see them. i'm able to be with them. i've had the vaccine and secondly, it has changed my life in a sense that i've been able to demonstrate to other people that -- i doubt whetherpeople expected me to take it if it

wasn't safe. i've been able to make the case it is safe to take the vaccine. it's important to take the vaccine. >> let's talk about the crisis at the border. some heartbreaking scenes down there. >> yeah. >> right now. a lot of the migrants coming in saying they're coming in because you promised to make things better. it seems to be getting worse by the day. was it a mistake not to anticipate this surge? >> well, first of all, there was a surge the last two years, in '19 and '20, there was a surge as well. >> this one might be worse. >> it could be but here's the deal, first of all, the idea that joe biden said come -- because i heard the other day that they're coming because they are saying i'm a nice guy and i -- >> they're saying this? >> well, here's the deal. they're not. the adults are being sent back, number one. number two, what do you do with an unaccompanied child that comes to the border? do you repeat what trump did, take them from their mothers and hold them in cells, et cetera? we're not doing that. so what we're doing is we have brought in hhs and also brought in fema to provide for enough

safe facilities for them to not -- to get out of the control of the border patrol which are not designed to hold people for long periods of time, particularly children. get them out of those facilities and most of them come with a phone number. so what we're doing is, we're putting together an entire organizational structure so that within seven days they're able to get on the phone, contact that number, find out whether there is a mother or a father, whether it is safe, whether it is a secure circumstance to get the child to that adult. >> it's going to take some time, though, to get those policies in place again. do you have to say quite clearly don't come? >> yes, i can say quite clearly don't come. we're in the process of getting set up, and it's not going to take a whole long time, is to be able to apply for asylum in place. so don't leave your town or city or community. we're going to make sure we have facilities in those cities and towns run by dhs and also access

with hhs to help the human services to say, you can apply for asylum from where you are right now. make your case. we'll have people there to determine whether or not you are able to meet the requirements and you qualify for asylum. that's the best way to do this. in addition to that, while we also changed the circumstances on the ground in those communities, you're going to diminish the reason why people want to leave in the first place. >> director of national intelligence came out with a report today saying vladimir putin authorized operations during the election to denigrate you, support president trump, undermine our elections, divide our society. what price must he pay? >> he will pay a price. we had a long talk, he and i. i know him relatively well and the conversation started off, i said, i know you and you know me. if i establish this occurred, then be prepared. >> you said you know he doesn't have a soul. >> i did say that to him, yes, and his response was we

understand one another. i wasn't being a wise guy. i was alone with him in his office. that's how it came about. it was when president bush said i looked in his eyes and saw a soul. i said i looked in your eyes and i don't think you have a soul. he looked back and said we understand each other. look, the most important thing in dealing with foreign leaders in my experience, and i've dealt with an awful lot of them in my career, is just know the other guy. >> so you know vladimir putin. you think he is a killer? >> uh-huh, i do. >> so what price must he pay? >> the price he's going to pay, well, you'll see shortly. i'm not going to -- by the way, we ought to be able -- that expression walk and chew gum at the same time. there are places where it's in our mutual interest to work together. that's why i renewed the start agreement with him. that occurred while he's doing this but that's overwhelming in the interest of humanity that we diminish the prospect of a nuclear exchange. >> president trump reached a deal with the taliban, have all american troops leave by may 1st. are they going to leave? >> i'm in the process of making

that decision now as to when they'll leave. the fact is that that was not a very solidly negotiated deal that the president -- the former president worked out and so we're in consultation with our allies as well as the government and that decision is going to be -- it's in the process now. >> likely to take longer? >> i don't think a lot longer. >> but may 1st is tough? >> could happen, but it is tough because -- look, one of the drawbacks, george -- and this is going to be like sanscript to people listening here. but it is -- the failure to have an orderly transition from the trump presidency to my presidency, which usually takes

place from election day to the time you're sworn in, has cost me time and consequences. for example, we didn't realize how bad things were in terms of lack of vaccines. we were not able to get access to this information. that's part of -- that's one of the issues we're talking about now in terms of afghanistan. >> let me ask you about governor cuomo of new york. i know you said you want the investigation to continue. if the investigation confirms the claims of the women, should he resign? >> yes. i think he probably will end up being prosecuted too. >> but do you -- how about right now? you said you want the investigation to continue. you saw chuck schumer, senator schumer, senator gillibrand, the majority of the congressional delegation don't think he can be an effective governor. can he? >> well, that's a judgment for them to make about whether he can be effective. here's my position since i wrote the violence against women act, a woman should be presumed telling the truth and should not be scapegoated and become victimized by her coming

forward. number one. but there should be an investigation to determine whether what she says is true. that's what's going on now. >> very clear if they prove the claims he's gone? >> that's what i think happens and by the way there could be a criminal prosecution that is attached to it. i just don't know, but let the investigation -- i'm not -- i don't know what it is. but i started with the presumption, it takes a lot of courage for the woman to come forward. so the presumption is it should be taken seriously and it should investigated and that's what's under way now. >> toughest words yet for governor cuomo right there. >> he was very direct. >> yeah. >> on every single issue. we talked to him about a lot more. in the next hour we'll get into the big next items like taxes and voter rights. for the first time he talks about changing the filibuster and we also have an update on major after that biting incident. >> out of the doghouse? >> seems like it.

got to see him last night. >> thank you, george. >> we are looking forward to that, george. we turn now to some tragic news. deadly shootings in atlanta killing at least eight people. a suspect in custody this morning and police across the country are on alert this morning as well fearing the attacks may have targeted the asian community. steve osunsami is in atlanta with more as the fbi now gets involved. good morning, steve. >> reporter: that's right, michael. the fbi is working with law enforcement investigating these killings, it's impossible to ignore that these killings happened at asian businesses like this one directly behind me and most of the victims were asian women. georgia authorities are investigating three crime scenes across two counties in what looks like a series of deadly shootings at asian massage parlors. >> my understanding they shot up a spa there. they shot up two spas here in zone 2. >> reporter: after a police chase that took them south of atlanta, police arrested this man, 21-year-old robert aaron

long. police say he was seen on surveillance video outside the scene of the first shooting around 5:00 p.m. tuesday at young asian massage parlor in a north atlanta suburb. moments after these pictures police say he started gunning people down. >> we do not have a witness for that who's alive right now that can say who shot thm. >> reporter: people were running for their lives. the two asian women, a white woman and a white man were killed. they say a man, latino, survived his wounds. his niece says he wasn't even at the business and was caught in the gunfire. >> he was coming out of the store beside the massage parlor and the other store beside it and he was outside. >> reporter: investigators say it is extremely likely that long is the same gunman seen at two other shootings more than 30 miles away in northeast atlanta. they point to a black suv seen on surveillance video near the crime scenes. just 45 minutes after the shooting in the suburbs, police were called to this spa in atlanta where three women were dead inside. while police were there, the call came in from yet another spa across the street where

another woman was shot and killed. police tell us they don't know if race is the reason for these killings, but to be safe they're putting similar asian businesses on alert and stepping up patrols. >> i mean, i don't know how you go in there -- what kind of motive would drive you to do such a thing? >> reporter: president biden has been briefed on this. it's important to underline that this is happening at the same time we're seeing an alarming increase in the amount of violence against asian americans in this country and that violence is tied to the racist trope that the coronavirus is somehow the responsibility of where it began. robin? >> including here in new york city. steve, thank you. now to that major severe threat for the deep south.

at least four states are on the highest alert for an intense tornado outbreak. ginger is live in jackson, mississippi, for us this morning. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, robin. you can hear the birds chirping. the sunshine is fuel for long-track violent tornadoes that we think could happen today. let me get you straight to the maps. we already have a tornado watch. this system is already producing tornado warnings right along the mississippi and arkansas state line there. you have pine bluff, over to memphis and tupelo included. look what happened in jackson, mississippi, just yesterday, the day before the day at our affiliate, they took several direct lightning strikes. their chief meteorologist david hartman was telling me they got knocked off line today and he is so concerned about today, and so am i. we have a high risk, the highest level that the storm prediction center puts out that could mean in the areas highlighted here rounds of storms this afternoon, this evening and into the overtight, we could see that type of tornado that you only survive by going underground or being in a shelter.

him. following a lot of headlines right now as well, including the deadly shootings in atlanta. they killed at least eight people. a suspect in custody this morning. the fbi getting involved as well and police across the country are stepping up patrols fearing the attack targeted the asian community. officials are still looking for a motive. the latest in the trial of derek chauvin. the seven jurors will be questioned about that $27 million settlement between the city of minneapolis and the family of george floyd that landed right in the middle of jury selection and whether it could impact their ability to be impartial at the former officer's murder trial. this morning, we're celebrating the actor yaphet kotto. live and let die and alien. he made a lasting impact on the hollywood community.

kotto was 81 years old. we continue now with that homecoming scandal in florida. an elementary school assistant principal and her daughter are arrested for allegedly hacking student accounts, casting hundreds of fake votes to elect the daughter homecoming queen. t.j. back with that. >> okay, robin, you think about fixing a high school election and it conjures up images of stuffing ballots in a box in the cafeteria. in this case they voted via an app virtually for homecoming queen and where this story goes from being a shame to being a crime. police say the mom and daughter had to illegally access accounts of hundreds of students, accounts that had a lot of personal information of those students, all so the daughter could wear the crown. a florida mom and daughter under arrest this morning for allegedly rigging the election for homecoming queen. officials say assistant

principal laura rose carroll and her daughter, 17-year-old emily rose grover, illegally accessed other students' accounts so grover would be elected homecoming queen. the mother/daughter duo arrested in pensacola monday. >> the system is set up for the persons who have access, not to allow persons to have that -- there is a degree of trust that has to go there and certainly that's the primary problem that you have in this situation. >> reporter: the investigation into the alleged scheme started in november after the escambia county school district reported hundreds of student accounts at tate high school had been hacked. those accounts contained medical history, test scores and other sensitive student information. school officials also discovered 117 homecoming court votes all cast from the same ip address in a very short time. investigators say carroll, an assistant principal at bellview elementary school, used her districtwide security level to access accounts belonging to students at her daughter emily's high school. authorities say they eventually

found that a total of 246 votes cast for the homecoming court were linked to carroll's cell phone and computers at her home. multiple students told police the 17-year-old would often brag about using her mother's account to access classmates' private information. a fellow student telling investigators that emily looks up all our group of friends' grades and makes comments about how she can find out our test scores all of the time. now, the duo facing felony charges for unauthorized access of those private accounts. grover was expelled from school. carroll suspended from her job. florida teen ariana was homecoming queen runner-up losing out to emily, her close friend for years. but when rumors began to circulate about a rigged homecoming election, she says she didn't believe it. >> i did hear rumors, but didn't really think anything of it until i was brought into the office and it all became real. >> reporter: despite the initial shock she says she since has moved on but says the other

girls really missed out. >> the other girls that could have -- that wanted it that could have been one of the runner-ups, i feel bad for them because that was an opportunity that they lost. >> even though this is about this homecoming vote, a lot of the students tell the police in the affidavit that the girl, the daughter, would actually brag in class, around school, and even show them how she could use her mom's account to access their grades. so they say it's been going on for years that she's been accessing it. the mom and daughter through their attorney say they have no comment at this time. >> i bet they don't. okay, t.j., thanks very much. we're going to move on now to tiger woods. he's back home in florida this morning three weeks after that crash. the golf legend is opening up about his recovery and matt gutman has details. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, george. i spoke with specialists overnight, and they say this kind of compound fracture can take three months to heal and then the physical therapy begins. but the fact that tiger woods is now home is a huge milestone for him. it means he's likely not battling infection and frees him

up to do as he said over night working on getting stronger every day. this morning, golf superstar tiger woods is home recovering from that horrific rollover accident that shattered his right leg. woods announcing on twitter he had returned home and is working on getting stronger every day. he added he is grateful for the outpouring of support and encouragement over the past few weeks. woods had been treated at cedars-sinai medical center and harbor ucla medical center where he was rushed for surgery after the crash. doctors implanted a metal rod, screws and pins to stabilize the shattered bones in his right tibia, ankle and foot. first responders say they had to use an axe and a pry bar to yank out the windshield and pull woods to safety. he had just started to rehab from his fifth back operation. >> it's very fortunate that mr. woods was able to come out of this alive. >> reporter: woods who was wearing a seat belt was driving to a television shoot when the accident happened.

a set of chains connecting it to the trailer, the only thing keeping it from plunging to certain obliteration. >> this is the first time that any of us can remember anything like in that the chain actually held the vehicle up which most times it does not. >> reporter: this good samaritan was reportedly first on the scene. rodney drury, a tow truck driver springing into action attaching his vehicle to the back of the suspended truck. >> i was just at the right place at the right time and actually i give all the credit to god that i was there. that truck was just hanging on by a little chain when i looked over. >> reporter: that chain allowing authorities to secure the truck before rappelling down to rescue the couple trapped inside. paramedic gerald dillman putting himself in danger to help get the people out. >> he was literally working through the passenger window and then moved in safely over to the landing where we were able to get that patient out of the canyon. >> reporter: the man and woman finally freed, mostly unharmed. witnesses say the truck appeared to lose control before the crash, swerving across the highway before pitching over the guardrail.

bulletproof and it's good to talk to a third party observer because your friends are great and advice from them is great but they're your friends, so i think it's been incredibly constructive and i recommend it to everybody. >> do you think that the fans and haters will understand you a little bit better after they read the book? >> yeah, i think so. you know, a lot of people just assume things about you because maybe they saw you on tv or maybe they read this or that and i'm just trying to fill in the blanks a little bit and tell you where i came from and how it all happened and i really think that everybody who's gotten me to this point, familywise, taught me well and taught me to try to be humble and gracious and kind. >> you do have a fascinating family history, aunt was the first female athlete on the cover of "time" magazine which i found, wow, wow moment. you wrote this during quarantine while you've been playing house

about the tremendous ratings that his briefings were having talking about how higher ratings than the season finale for "the bachelor" he bragged, this is back when, of course, he still had twitter. >> your book has some new revelations about what was going on behind the scenes during the pandemic. >> yeah, and there's one really extraordinary scene so i've written a new afterword for the paperback edition and i went back and did some reporting. i wanted to capture some of the major moments that have awful year and there was a scene that i learned about in the oval office in early march where -- mid-march where the president was talking with somebody, mike pence came in, the vice president, talked about how the navy was preparing to deploy the hospital ship "mercy" to seattle which, remember, was the place where the coronavirus first really hit badly and the "mercy" was on the way ready to go and

the president said, wait a minute. why is it going to seattle? you know, we -- and pence is saying we're still trying to figure out, los angeles is another possibility of where it can go. he goes, come on, that jerk in washington state, he was talking about the governor up there, inslee who had been clashing with him. he's been such a jerk, gavin newsom, the governor of california has been saying the nicest things about me and, george, he actually yelled out to his secretary in the area just outside the oval office and asked her to get governor newsom on the phone, put him on speakerphone and said, gavin, you've been saying the nicest things about me, don't you think this hospital ship should go to you instead of that jerk up in seattle? up in washington state? and, in fact, george, the hospital ship ended up going to los angeles and not to seattle. >> wow. put one more in the file of shocking but not surprising, i suppose. meanwhile, since the inauguration, since the capitol

riot on january 6th the president has had his twitter account taken away and made some noise about getting back into politics but we haven't seen all that much of him. >> reporter: no, it's been rather extraordinary. he called in to fox news yesterday of he's getting a little bit antsy, i'm told. i'm actually going to go down and talk to him soon for another book that i am writing about what happens next. but, you know, it's been meeting with republican leader after republican leader down there. he still remains even after january 6th even after all that transpired he still remains the dominant force in republican politics and i think you're going to start seeing more of him and certainly hinting that he'll run for president again suggesting it. whether he pulls the trigger i don't think we'll know for some time. >> you and i both interviewed him dozens of times and asked question about russia time and time again. contrast his answers with what we heard from president biden in

strength. >> i didn't even recognize my own voice when i said who are you at first. my voice got deep and stern. it was something for which i'm so surprised about myself when i think about how quickly and how much of a woman i was when i handled that situation. i'm a survivor. >> reporter: and i got to tell you, robin, every person we speak to on this show truly fees like a survivor. they do not feel like victims and that's why they want to share these messages of hope with you. >> what surprised you most about their story, gio? >> reporter: you know, when i asked did you forgive that person, they said not only did i forgive, robin, they said i feel for them. i understand them. so there was compassion and empathy there so it's really just incredible these stories and it all airs tonight at 10:00, 9:00 central on a&e so i hope you'll join us for "i survived a crime." >> your response gave me chills.
