andrew, good morning. >> reporter: and good morning. so biden and harris had planned on spending the week touting the benefits of their new covid relief package but instead are heading to atlanta to offer support to an asian-american community on edge. flags flying at half-staff in honor of the eight souls who were savagely killed in a murderous spree at spas across the atlanta area. today president biden and vice president harris head to georgia to address the rise in anti-asian violence. six of the victims were asian women. >> i can't put any reasoning behind why somebody would want to do something so horrific to such nice people. >> reporter: and now we're learning disturbing new details about the alleged gunman. authorities believe the suspect purchased the gun used in the vicious slayings just hours before he carried out the brutal and deadly attacks. >> we do not have a witness that actually is alive right now that can tell us who shot them. >> reporter: although investigators believe hatred towards women was more a motive than race, asian communities throughout the country are on

alert angered, outraged and sickened by the recent string of violence towards asians. >> are you investigating into a possible hate crime? >> our investigation is looking at everything, so nothing is off the table. >> reporter: meanwhile, a spokesperson for the cherokee county sheriff's department is entangled in controversy and will no longer speak on the case after appearing to promote a racist t-shirt in the past, the shirt containing anti-asian sentiments about china and the coronavirus. it comes as a texas lawmaker finds himself in hot water over seemingly pro-lynching comments during a house meeting focusing on stopping the anti-asian attacks across the u.s. >> there's old sayings in texas about, you know, find all the rope in texas and get a tall oak tree. >> the remark drawing fierce and emotional criticism from one asian-american congresswoman. >> we are in pain, and for the last year we've been screaming out for help. your party and your colleagues can talk about issues with any other country that you want, but you don't have to do it by putting a bull's-eye on the back of asian-americans across this

country, on our grandparents, on our kids. >> reporter: meanwhile, an outpouring of support and a show of solidarity in atlanta. mourners holding a vigil to remember the victims and denounce hate. and president biden plans to meet with a delegation in georgia made up of asian-american lawmakers as well as other community leaders when he's in atlanta later today. kenneth, mona. >> and we will have complete coverage of that. andrew, thank you. also in washington, the house has passed two immigration bills aimed at creating a pathway to citizenship for millions of so-called dreamers and undocumented farm workers. a small number of republicans voted for both bills, but they face an uphill battle in the senate where approval will require ten republicans. meanwhile, we've learned 4,500 unaccompanied minors are now in border custody and more than 500 have been detained for at least ten days. a major development today in the push to re-open schools, the cdc is issuing new guidance when it comes to social distancing and the coronavirus. this morning the cdc is expected to change the rules for schools when it comes to social

distancing recommending three feet of space instead of six feet to stop the spread of coronavirus. schools say it's a game changer for re-opening classrooms, but the change requires children wear a mask, which could be problematic. >> just today in the hospital i saw so many people wearing masks totally the wrong way. so until we really know, you know, how safe it is to reduce the distance, i still think that six feet is the way to go. >> reporter: meanwhile, encouraging news on the vaccine front. president biden says his goal of administering 100 million doses in his first 100 days of his presidency will be accomplished today, 42 days early, but with only 12% of the population fully vaccinated, covid cases are rising in nearly one-third of states. >> things may get worse as new variants of this virus spread. >> reporter: hospital admissions are now up sharply in michigan, minnesota, delaware, idaho and hawaii. and overseas today, paris is entering another lockdown days after italy shut down with europe falling further behind in vaccination rates.

skyrocketing up to $500 each. >> for fans that are looking for tickets for opening day and beyond, i'm sure they're a little shocked with the current price. as more and more fans have access to tickets as season ticket holders, we expect that the prices will level out. >> let's hope movie ticket prices are better because more americans can go to the movies. amc says 98% of its theaters will be open by today. the fbi is asking for the public's help tracking down some of the most violent attackers from the u.s. capitol riot. they're focusing on ten people in newly released video including this man brutally beating and jabbing officers with a metal pole. they're also looking for a man who was zapping police with what appears to be an electric cattle prod. you can even hear the buzzing sound from the electricity, and another clip shows a man spraying an orange chemical at officers. more than 300 people have already been charged. in weather, the worst is over after a tornado outbreak left a trail of destruction from

texas to florida. 30 tornadoes have been reported across the south since tuesday including a twister that leveled homes in alabama. one man says his family is lucky to be alive. >> the tornado, it was pulling her away, so my oldest son, trent, went out the door, grabbed ahold of her. it was pulling both of them away, so my youngest son stepped out and grabbed ahold of them. it was like a human chain. >> we'll check today's forecast in just a few moments. now to a developing story, a confrontation erupting in the u.s. summit with china. it just got underway in alaska, and it's off to a very rocky start. this morning, tensions high after a fiery meeting between the u.s. and china. >> our overriding priority on the united states' side is to ensure that our approach in the world and our approach to china benefits the american people and protects the interests of our allies and partners. >> reporter: in the first face-to-face talks of the biden administration, diplomacy turned to drama after secretary of

floor. the stolen bikes are worth a total of $95,000. investment bankers at goldman sachs claim the company is forcing them to work under inhumane conditions. they say some young bankers are being forced to work 95 hours per week while dealing with abusive managers. the company says it's listening to the concerns. in florida, officials have revealed a major election deception. they say a man was paid to enter a senate race because he had the same last name as another man on the ballot. >> reporter: this morning, a former state senator is accused of hiring a fake candidate to confuse florida voters in november's election. >> we are alleging that november's florida senate district 37 election involved crimes. >> reporter: investigators say frank artiles, a republican paid alex pedro rodriguez to enter the senate race and run against the incumbent democrat who had the same last name, jose javier rodriguez. >> to use his name to confuse who? the electors. >> reporter: the arrest warrant

says artiles planned to confuse voters and siphon votes by having rodriguez run as a no party candidate who never actually campaigned. but he still got nearly 3% of the vote. that was enough to tip the race to the republican challenger ileana garcia, who won by just 31 votes. now after a four-month investigation, artiles and rodriguez face several felonies involving illegal campaign contributions. where did that money come from? >> thank you very much. have a great day, guys. >> reporter: prosecutors say artiles paid rodriguez, an acquaintance who was in debt, nearly $50,000. >> running a ghost candidate like alex pedro rodriguez is not a crime in florida. is it an attack on our democracy? is it a dirty political trick? absolutely. >> reporter: the arrest warrant shows when questioned rodriguez told authorities about artiles' plan. his attorney saying artiles cynically targeted a vulnerable friend. alex rodriguez deeply regreats allowing himself to be used in this way, and hopes that by

tread plus was involved in the deadly accident. the ceo reaching out to the owners of the machine writing, quote, while we are aware of only a small handful of incidents involving tread + where children have been hurt, each one is devastating to all of us at peloton. the tragedy shining a light on home dangers according to the consumer product safety commission. more than 6,000 children were injured by workout equipment in 2019 alone. just last month, a 3-year-old was trapped under a peloton treadmill, leaving the toddler with a brain injury. this mom showed just how easily something can get pulled under the treadmill after the machine swallowed an exercise ball. her toddler was only feet away. peloton warning owners to take extra precautions, saying users should keep children and pets away. check around the equipment before starting the machine, and remove the safety key when you're done so kids can't accidentally turn it on. the safety commission says it's now investigating that deadly accident. all right.
