including the shooting in georgia. rallies were held across the region today from san francisco over to san mateo county, over to oakland. good evening, thank you for joining us. i am 24. hundreds of people showed up in chinatown. cornell bernard was there with more of their message. >> our hearts, our spirits, are just tired. >> reporter: a community is in pain. the suffering has all. >> we are hurting and angry. >> reporter: hundreds packed portsmouth square in a show solidarity, demanding the attacks against asian americans stop. >> we have to stand up. we are all in the struggle together. if we don't voice it now, when will we? here i am. >> reporter: attacks against asian americans have been happening weekly in the bay area. the violence is caught on camera. many victims have been seniors. >> just imagine if someone

attacks your grandmother or your grandfather, and killed them. it is sad, and painful to the families. it is painful to this community, which has suffered. >> reporter: nears grief for the eight victims of a mass shooting in atlanta. six of them are asian women. federal authorities have yet to find enough evidence to bring hate crime charges against the suspect. >> we don't need to wait. we know there was hate. that is why we are seeing a response across the country. >> reporter: some are scared to be on the streets. >> 11 community is not safe, none of us are safe. is>> reporter: we have to send a message out. if you commit the crimes he will be arrested. there is no free lunch. >> reporter: not everyone believes that a larger police presence is the answer. >> police are not always the solution to the safety concerns

we see, including the use of force in situations like with a mental health says. >> reporter: during saturday's rally, there are messages of healing and hope, hand-painted by community members in park. mayor london breed says she is focused on solutions. she says next week, the city will announce a program to keep the communities safe. we have no details yet. police patrols have been increased in areas where the attacks of happened. cornell bernard, abc7 news. a show of solidarity in brisbane. they gathered in a park to denounce racism against americans and pacific islanders. there have not been any reports of violence in brisbane. i want to make sure everybody feels safe and supported. >> asian-american and pacific islander community is reeling from these attacks of senseless violence that have been occurring.

these attacks have been captured, felt, put out on social media. it needs to stop. >> reporter: officials are urging residents to report any concerning in it incidences. those that do not feel safe walking alone can call the community response coalition to request a chaperone. to the east bay where the oakland rollers and lake people skate were among the several skate groups that came together today to show their support for the stop a.a.p.i. hate movement. they started at madison park and went through oakland chinatown, ending up in little saigon. the skaters say they are rolling in solidarity with asians and pacific islanders that have been targeted in racist attacks. from one the alarming attacks on asian americans, and how congress can confront the issue, tune into abc7 news tomorrow. the congresswoman, chair of the congressional asian pacific american caucus will be speaking with martha raddatz. you can tune in at 8:00 a.m.

in a letter released today, local politicians are calling for the resignation of the san francisco unified school boards vice president. they say a recently surfaced series of tweets is anti-asian. our reporter, matt boone, explains a parents group drew attention to the tweets as a partial recall of several board members. >> reporter: the series of tweets was made by allison collins in december 2016. i was 2 years before election. in one, she described a story where her daughter, her voice teasing a latino about trump, mexicans, and the kkk. in another, she wrote, they use white supremacist thinking to assimilate and get ahead. >> is seems to be judging asian americans, or wanting to study hard, give kids an education,

right?>> reporter: many of her tweets have now been deleted, the two of them capture them and publish them as part of their campaign to recall her along with two other board members. >> this is not acceptable for a person with whom we are trusting our kids with to have such a deep-seated animosity for people that she is supposed to look after. >> reporter: they caught the attention of the former san francisco supervisor the says he is not part of the recall ever. he wrote a letter calling for her to resign. he was cosigned by more than 20 other state leaders. >> this is terrible. this should not be acceptable for anyone. >> reporter: she is not indicated whether she was resign. she says i acknowledge that right now in this moment, my words, taken out of context can cause more pain for those that are suffering. for the pain my words may have caused, i may apologize on is

unreservedly. she found some support from gabriela lopez that said, i stand in solidarity with the vice president and asian- american communities. this has been marked by hate and violence. in this moment of pain, words matter more than ever. i appreciate that vice president alison collins apologize for her remarks. matt boone, abc7 news. as governor gavin newsom pledged to make all californians eligible for vaccination by may 1, the state is struggling to reach certain populations. california is among the worst states for vaccine equity. our reporter is part of our vaccine team, speaking to community and state leaders about what needs to change.>> reporter: over 24% of californians have received at least one dose of the covid-19 vaccine so far. when it comes to vaccine equity, the cdc says we are

struggling. to be blunt, we are among the worst. we are ranked number 44 among 48 states on the list. >> sadly, i am not surprised.>> reporter: to go to change the distribution strategies always go, allocating 40% of all vaccine doses to zip codes in the most vulnerable areas of the date. governor gavin newsom also said the eligibility system is expected to end and 5.5 weeks. vaccines will be available for all californians. one of sibley members is the 40% equity strategy doesn't work for the entire state. it will only allow for 2% of the vaccines to go to our population.>> reporter: 20 legislators signed a letter urging the state to change the strategy. >> what are you in a similar members hoping to achieve with this letter? >> we suggested a different way

to do this. >> reporter: the mission district is one of the covid-19 hotspots. it was not prioritized by the state. community members say they could not wait any longer on the state. they are opening a second vaccination hub. >> will do a walk-through for a potential second site. we are looking at different sites. >> reporter: the tenderloin is another hot spot. a supervisor suggested a vaccine mobilization effort will launch next thursday. in san francisco, abc7 news. and east bay, community partners are stepping up to make sure members of the african-american community get there second covid-19 vaccine. a free clinic was held today at the act full gospel church. the focus is on vaccinating essential workers and black seniors. many are part of the church congregation. >> people feel comfortable and safe coming to church.

a terrifying moment for people at the san diego zoo. witnesses say a man and his toddler barely escaped after entering an exhibit and coming within feet of a charging elephant. we explain how it all happened.>> reporter: tonight, harrowing new video showing an elephant charging at a 2-year- old girl and her father. this is moments after they allegedly broke into an enclosure at the san diego zoo. according to the zoo, the man bypassed multiple barriers on friday, carrying his daughter into the habitat to take a picture. >> she was taken into the

police say they were called to the restaurant because the woman was refusing to leave. employees told police that the woman he hit an employee and made several racist remarks to other employees. the woman was arrested on suspicion of hate crime, battery, and probation violation. in the east bay, the oakland teachers union approved a tentative deal with the school district to reopen schools. both sides negotiated for weeks before today's vote. the deal aims to have an estimated 13,000 students return to classrooms next month. the school officials will be required to visit classrooms to ensure all safety measures are in place. the school board will cast its vote on march 31. 20,000 masks, created with an artistic touch were handed ut in san francisco. e handed san francisco's covid comman system teamed up with nonprofit groups to create masks and give them away today. they focused on neighborhoods most impacted by the pandemic. the initiative is part of the

city's mask on, stay strong campaign to promote mask wearing to stop the spread of covid-19 and safely reopens inferences for businesses. the golden state warriors head coach says he is optimistic that his team will receive the vaccine soon. before tonight's game in memphis, he did say they do not have a vaccination plan in place yet. >> i think the nba has done a great job of not having athletes jump in front of the line. that is really important that we make sure everybody who needs a vaccine gets one us. we make it a joke that he was tempted to bring his team across the tennessee border into mississippi whether residents 16 and older are eligible for the vaccine. he of course, did not do that. the warriors have dealt with their share of coronavirus related issues. right now, three players are under the nba's health and
