building a better bay area. what has been incredible is the outpouring of support from our allies. >> it inis incredible. a crowd well over a thousand people shows its support for the asian american pacific islander community. with that, we say good evening and thank you so much for joining us. and more than a thousand people took to the streets today to stop the violence against asian americans. today may have been the biggest show of unity yet for a community in pain and living in fear. abc 7 news reporter joins us live from san francisco's castro district. this by far was the largest crowd that we recent weeks. >> you're right. it was. so much solid arty all weekend. today, a new al lie joining others to say stop the hate. more than a thousand people

taking over market street. a march to stop hate and violence against asian americans. >> we're people, too. that violence on the rise in the bay area. many crimes against asian american seniors caught on camera. just days ago, eight people gunned down in atlanta. six of the victims were asian women. so, to just stand up and say enough is enough. >> before the march, is a rally. the lgbt becoming a new in the cause. >> i refuse asian hate. >> and so many of our leaders from the lgbt community to say we are standing with our asian- american families, our seniors. it means so much. >> the fear of just walking down the street, a new reality for many families. >> my mom was actually

shopping. instead of ornaments or dresses, she is shopping for baseball bat s or to protect herself. this is not the life that i wanted for my people. >> stand by one another and protect people. >> and when it comes to community safety, the mayor wants to bring back an idea from the 1980s. community-based safety patrols. >> we're going to bring back something similar to the guardian angels in our neighborhoods where we have our seniors and we are going to protect them and look out for them and support them and uplift them. >> and the mayor's office says those street patrols have been similar to the guardian angels but create more of a dedicated focus on neighbored others where attacks have happened. the mayor plans to give more details on this next week. in the meantime, a very big show of unity here. live in san francisco, abc 7 news. >> so nice to see that show of support. and what really touched me is that man saying his mother needed to buy a baseball bat.

no one should have to do that to protect themselves. many every thanks to your reporting. a community rally was also held in front of san jose city hall. south bay residents and community leaders called to the end to target asian americans. many participants were black as you see in a show of solid arty to survivors and victims. organizers wanted to get ther message across. >> somebody says we have to do something. and the technology. twitter, facebook, and in three days put together larger than i have ever seen. >> antiracism education needs to be taught in schools starting at a young age. and apartment of building a better bay area is fighting for racial and social justice. we don't have all the answers. we do have a lot of resources

tracker. you can see who is eligible and how your county is doing by going to abc7news.com. well, you are likely covered under a new paid sick leave law in california. it provides up to two weeks of leave for pandemic-related reasons. workers can take time off for self-quarantine or self- isolation to recover from symptoms of the coronavirus. get the covid vaccine, or deal with side effects. it also includes care for a family member in self- quarantine or self-isolation or a child whose school or place of care is closed because of covid-19 cases. the governor on friday signed the bill which is retroactive to january 1s. employees with businesses with 25 or fewer workers are exempt. >> starting next week, both the freemont, maine, and dublin libraries were reopened for limited in-person services. libraries will reopen after being closed for a year because of the pandemic. residents will be allowed to

browse, use printers and computers, study and access wifi. visitors will be required to follow covid guidelines including wearing a face mask. occupancy will be limited. well, travel is surging with the tsa screening more than a million passengers each of the last ten days. it got so packed in miami beach, and law enforcement had to break mented are. a push to get people vaccinated. more than 121 million vaccines have now been administered across the u. s. large vaccination sites opening up like this one at nashville's nissan astadium and another at arrowhead stadium in kansas city. nearly 80 million americans have received at least one dose and more than 43 million have been fully vaccinated. yet some people are still hesitant to getth the shot. senate majority leader is calling on the cdc to take

another surge. >> opening up right now really does put a lot of people at risk. so holding off is the more prudent thing to do. >> the highly contagious uk variant in all 50 states. the latest case confirmed in new york city. a brooklyn patient in their 90s with no travel history. abc news, washington. a pg ande underground utility vote caught on fire in san francisco. this is at 19 and market street at about 11:00 this morning. 13 people in the area are still without power. earlier, the fire department advised people to avoid the area. you can see a dozen firefighters responded. pg ande says broken equipment lead to the fire. the utility uses the volts to restore cables and transformers. former president trump is banned from just about all the major social media networks.

the biden administration's message on the human tar yan crisis on the u.s. border appears to be changing. more than 15,000 unaccompanied minors are now in u.s. custody after crossing the us/mexico border. federal officials are struggling to find safe housing for many of them. 5,000 children and teens are in u.s. for controlled custody. over 800 of the children have been in custody for more than ten days. with the legal limit being just three. facing growing criticism, the biden administration says they inherited a broken system. >> the entire system under united states law that has been in place throughout administration's of both parties was dismantled in its
