>> he had seven children, seven beautiful children ranging from the ages of 7 to 20. he was a strong catholic of deep faith. he loves his wife. >> talley's mother had this message during an emotional interview. >> the hate has to stop. you need to respect police officers that are running into the line of fire to save lives. stop the hate. just stop. >> officer talley was the first to arrive on the scene as the mass shooting unfolded. witnesses say the gunman was relentless as he started shooting in the parking lot before entering the store. >> basically he was right in between me and my car, and i was walking with my cart and honestly i'm very, very lucky to be alive. >> reporter: police say the shooter is this 21-year-old man bleeding from a gunshot wound to his leg. we're told after he surrendered he refused to answer questions from investigators instead asking to speak with his mother. abc news has learned he was born in syria but is an american citizen who came to the u.s.

when he was 3. records show he was charged with assault in 2017 and in 2018 when he was convicted of repeatedly punching another student at his high school. last night, cameras captured arvada, colorado, about 20 miles outside of boulder. they're also scouring his social media posts including one message where someone identified as the suspect claims he was mistreated because he's muslim. and another post saying #needagirlfriend. another focus for investigators, potential mental health issues. the suspect's brother tells "the daily beast," he believes his brother was paranoid. and the suspect purchased an ar style gun six days before the shooting. police say he had two weapons on him during the attack. >> it's igniting another battle over gun laws in washington. abc's faith abubey is covering that part of the story in d.c. faith, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, kenneth. gun control was not at the top

of president biden's agenda for his first 100 days in office. however, two mass shootings within a week apparently changed that. this morning a new push for gun laws in the wake of the boulder and metro atlanta shootings. >> i don't need to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take common sense steps that will save the lives in the future. >> reporter: the white house says president biden is considering executive action on guns, but has not specified what action he might take. >> obviously, you know, not just gun safety measures but violence in communities, so that is -- has been under discussion and will continue to be under discussion. >> reporter: biden is pushing also for a ban on high capacity magazines, an assault weapons ban and he also wants senators to vote on two bills that cleared the house that would checks. >> leaders have their place in this, but we are senate leaders. what are we doing?

>> reporter: passing those bills in the senate remains a long shot. they would need support from more than ten republicans. joe manchin has said he does not support them. during a senate committee hearing tuesday, republicans accused the democrats of using the recent shootings as an excuse to limit access to guns. >> every time there is a shooting we play this ridiculous theater where this committee gets together and proposes a bunch of laws that would do nothing to stop these murders. >> reporter: later democratic senator chris murphy responded. >> i mean ted cruz is really good at yelling. he's not good at telling the truth, and the truth is that states with stronger gun laws have lower rates of gun violence. >> reporter: senator joe manchin has suggested he may reintroduce gun reform legislation he proposed back in 2013 that would expand background checks to all commercial gun sales but doesn't include some of those restrictions we saw in the two house bills recently passed. kenneth. >> all right, faith, thank you.

now to breaking news from a movie set in southern california. police say in pasadena a crane being used to shoot a film has collapsed into a home. at least one person was injured. it's unclear how the crane fell. but strong winds were reported in that area. now to the pandemic. vaccine shipments are ramping up as more states expand elegiability. the federal government says it will distribute 27 million doses this week. that's 5 million more than last week. it comes with covid cases on the rise. these 16 states have seen infections increase by at least 10% in the last week. astrazeneca is being accused of cherry picking data about the effectiveness of its covid vaccine. federal health officials say the company used outdated and potentially misleading data when it claimed its vaccine is 79% effective. it is promising updated findings as soon as tomorrow. experts say the discovery proves their system of checks and balances works. >> i myself am a member of a panel like that for other trials and we have many systems in

criticism for delays during the holiday season, the postal service is looking to the future, and that future could look very different. to be blunt, we are not structured properly, and we have fallen out of step with the marketplace we serve. >> postmaster general louis dejoy out with a ten-year plan that he says will save the post office which currently faces a massive $160 billion shortfall. the biggest change, a longer delivery window for first class mail. that window is currently two to three days but dejoy's plan would extend it up to five days. certain post offices would see reduced hours while prices would increase, although he's not saying by how much. >> it seems like too little too late. >> reaction has been swift. the postal workers union says it has deep concerns and some mail carriers say after record delivery delays during the pandemic, this could be a fatal blow to the reputation of the post office. >> it's in real trouble because of the lack of trust a lot of
