debted to her." the cause of the accident is under investigation. a terrible tragedy. california highway patrol confirms a suspect was kill inside a shooting involved fremont police this afternoon. it happened before 3:00 on eastbound 84. that so the newark and fremont border. abc news reporter spoke with a witness who describes the shooting and the tense moments that followed. >> reporter: the california highway patrol says a fremont police officer shot and killed an armed suspect in a stolen vehicle. adding the car was connected to an armed robbery. the pursuit ended here wednesday afternoon on eastbound 84 at the newark/fremont border. this cellphone video recorded by a bay area resident asking to be identified as dominique. the shocking development on her daily drive loam. she first noticing a car being pulled over. >> all of a sudden i see a police officer walk up and the

guy just hopped out of the car. >> reporter: tense moments followed. >> i seen the officer, he started running to the side, looked like he tripped a little bit. turned around and shot the guy. i heard about two shots. and then the guy just dropped down. >> reporter: the chp confirms the man has died. sky 7 captured the wide scene from overhead with all eastbound rains remaining closed throughout the afternoon. on the ground and only minutes after the gunfire she recorded video of responding officers jumping the median and drawing their weapon. >> i am not sure if there was someone else in the vehicle they were waiting for. but it was just a lot of guns drawn. >> reporter: we reach the out to the police for a comment on the deadly shooting but have not heard back. in fremont, back to you. to the coronavirus, new developments, astrazeneka released information about the

effectiveness of its vaccine. astrazeneca says 100% against severe and critical cases or the need for hospitalization. and no safety concerns were identified during the trial. education and reopening of schools is a key part of our effort to build a better bay area. starting on monday nearly all of the elementary school students in san rafael unified will go back to the classroom five days a week. abc 7 news reporter jr stone explains what tell look like for kids and teachers. >> reporter: 8-year-old is in 2nd grade and just learned this week he will go back to his school for in- person learning only starting on monday. >> yes. i was excited. >> reporter: excited because instead of half of the day on computer and half at school all 4 1/2 hours each day will be in school five days a week. >> elementary has been back since november in the am/pm that is awesome. and 0 transmissions. >> reporter: the city schools

superintendent says four feet of distance will be used, most classes will have 20-25 students. larger classes will be in other areas. >> some of them are meeting in the library and some of them expanding the rooms. >> reporter: nearly 90% of the district's 3,000 elementary school students will go to an all in- person schedule while others stay in distance-only classes. summers, featured in a recent abc news special for good smelling masks, will go back and his mother tells us he can not wait. also says he has been playing too many video games and watching too much tv as she tries to work. he says it is tough on-line. >> if i am doing math i can not see the answers and my teacher said it is hard to see the answers. >> there have been nearly 20 covid-19 cases among students but no virus spread at school and they have been preparing

for monday. >> we had to order a couple hundred more desks. now that the weather is nicer, meeting outdoors is a great way to do things as well. >> reporter:stnomi back to in-p learning that is equal to around 300 kids will continue to do distance learning through the end of the semester. in san rafael, jr stone, abc 7 news. 3 bay area counties are wrapping up their first day in the orange tier. today, san francisco, santa clara and marin counties joined san mateo. orange tier has fewer restrictions than the red which is where the rest of the bay area is classified as you can see in this graphic. in the orange tier, in door entertainment like bowling alleys and in door pools and outdoor bars can serve without the need of serving food. capacity is expanded for restaurants, museums and movie theaters as well.
