3:00 pm
building a better bay this is abc7 news. >> we are g swfor you in real time. today we're talking covid-19 health and equity. california is ranked 4 states. they are designating it to zip it takes outreach. joining us is dr. patel and bay
3:01 pm
area comic podcaster and host of united shades of america on concern, wkamau bell. you guys, i want this to be a conversation. don't be afraid ask. dr. patel has been wanting to be on a show with you. >> you know when you think you know someone and they don't know who you are, are, are, are bell is. >> . >> she's awesome.
3:02 pm
without pastor jackie, i wouldn't have this vaccine. when we were talking about bringing someone on, i said let me bring someone who is helping this community. >> we were glad to do it. we're glad you have na your arm. >> you're running these mobile clinics. i think it ends at 4:00. >> this is the and of our second week. so we go two more weeks. we're also taking walkups. sometimes the things we use for appointments become a barrier to access. so we're starting next week and the week after. >> good to know. do they have to oakland, alameda county. >> live or work in alameda county.
3:03 pm
we are going by the standards established by the state. because our church hits in one of the highest zip codes, we are prioritizing those persons we know will be impacted the greatest. so we want no get some of those highest zip code. check it out. it's online. >> so you can sign up online or just show up >> you can sign up online if you want a guaranteed appointment. they can also show up for walkups. we have people who walk up as early as 7:30 in the morning. >> i just want to be clear. i was there. it was a line filled with black and brown folks. there was someone giving instructions in mandarin. i saw a light dash of white people but if was overwhelmingly people from the community. >> were you sing mandarin back?
3:04 pm
i know you talents. >> kristen can teach us. >> that access is so important. there are a couple things we're talking about, access. for whatever reason we continue to have a lower percentage of black and brown folks when you compare what the percentages were in the population, right and the percentage of of from covid. so kamau given that, you're starting in a series of videos puts on by kaiser foundation and it's called the conversation between us and about us. tell bus it. what is the big idea? >> dr. boyd came to me, who lives in the bay area. she's a black doctor and wanted to figure out how to connects
3:05 pm
with black folks and covid. we talk about the hesitancy side but what we don't talk about there's a lot of information aimed at black folks and coming to black folks f it's not being delivered to you in a way that you can receive it, it's not helpful. it was less about his tan sip and more about understanding people have legitimate concerns and they shouldn't be descending that you don't understand science. >> doctor, tell us about some of the things that come. what are some of the things that make them hesitant. let's put that out there and get some answers with kamau, dr. patel. >> i will let the doctor handle the answers. >> i know you know the answers, kamau. >> i think the hesitancy is
3:06 pm
as prevalent. we are finding that many of them did not snow. even though we are in this technological age, we have to realize that for certain portions of the population we're trying to reach, they may not have email, something as simple as that. they may not have a computer or a smartphone. if you're still rocking their flip phone then they can't get confirmation for the appointment. it's a targeted approach going back to word of mouth, making phone calls or copying a and walking down the street saying, hey, did you know vaccinations were happening around the corner from your house. so that's a lesson that even we had to learn. we thought in we did a social media blast, email blast, online things that we would reach people. but there are many where the digital divide has been a
3:07 pm
barrier. we've been open to utilizing every single avenue we know with getting the word out with the best being word of mouth. >> you ask questions of doctors to give information to people. what are some of the questions that you posed on behalf of people and maybe dr. patel can help answer those, too. >> there were questions were black people involved in the testing of. it things about what are the side effects and what would the side effects be like. will the healthcare companies get rich off of this. will the pharmaceutical companies get rich off of this. i will leave it to the doctor. >> pharmacy companies will get rich off of it. that's common sense but that doesn't de tract from the fact we have a safe vaccine.
3:08 pm
it was tested on black and brown people worldwide. it's also important to address side effects, and going back to what pastor jack economy mentioned. this is not just constrained by the black community but i hear this from all different grounds, all colors. everyone is excited about it because they're reading things on the dark side of the internet. side effects that could be a concerning or adverse reaction compared to what you might expect. i don't know what you said, kamau, the happy vaccine pain. that is your body saying awesome, i got the vaccine. they can say this is normal. it dispels it. another thing in the video, if the vaccine was rushed.
3:09 pm
if the mr technology was rushed out. >> in doing some research, i see one of the factors for some people having the vaccine hesitancy and going back to the tuskegee experiment. >> i think we're waiting on who that's for. >> i think the tuskegee experiment is what people know. that is the most known violation. there are people who are living when that occurred. interesting, the people had lived when that occurred are also the ones what the tuskegee represents is representative of something larger people have experienced on a microlevel with the healthcare system. i don't know
3:10 pm
globally. it represents that that experiment is representative. >> all right. we've got to take a short break. let's continue this conversation on facebook live. join us if you want to question of
3:11 pm
this unplugged device is protecting our beautiful coastlines and more. put off chores and use less energy from 4 to 9 pm to help keep our state golden.
3:12 pm
and we are back
3:13 pm
alok patel, pastor jackie and podcaster and host of shades of america on cnn w. kamau bell. normally i need help so i more confident having pastor jackie and kamau on the show. >> today's two truths and a lie will be centered around around vaccine distribution. according to the cdc 55% were white who got the vaccine, 12% hispanic hispanic and 11% black. or 41% of white republicans said they would not get the vaccine when it becomes
3:14 pm
available compared to 12% of to plaque black people. which one is a lie. >> can you put that back up? just because i need to see it ago. >> i'm going to go with b. >> 41% of republicans said they would not get the vaccine if it became available. i will go with b. >> yes. folks on facebook live we scan use you as well, use your help we scan afternoon a friend. >> yeah, phone a friend. so far on facebook live i'm seeing mostly c's but i tend to think it's b. i don't think percentage of black respondents, that seems off to me. >> i wish you were right. the incorrect one is a, which
3:15 pm
is so disheartening. check this out. according to the cdc, the first problem is we only have data on half of the people who got this and 66% were white. 9% hispanic and 8% were black. people say hey, white people may have been overrepresented in that first wave of long-term care facilities but it also has to do with pastor jackie was talking about in terms of access. black people weren't able to go to vaccine hunters or in my state of arizona where anyone can get a vaccine. b, 41% of white republicans said they would not get a vaccine. whom 12% of black respondents said that. pastor jackie you said it's in the just a hesitancy issue. a lot of members of the black community say i want a shot.
3:16 pm
how can i get one. >> there has not beens a much hesitancy as said. black people want to live just like every other raise wants to live and celebrate birthdays and give birth and get married and even get divorced. >> and get remarried and get divorced and get re-remarried. >> they recognize the this is a i've saving measure. if we're talking about california, let's tell the real truth. the my turn app is a challenge. you're zealing with people where the bulk of their day is one trying to get back to work and survive so as you pointed out if i have to wait for someone to peck up the phone or have to have a g mail account to receive the email we're like forget it. if you can adjust the hours so
3:17 pm
people will have weekends or evening hours, if you tell the full story about the vaccine and people aren't forced to get their information from news blurts that you have people coming away saying i don't want the single dose because it's only 66% once they get full information, they're like shine mow up. >> doctor, pastor jackie is giving you a run for your halloween. >> pastor jackie was a news correspondent. >> listen, i do a hundred zooms a day. >> i'm just going to drink my water and leave. >> can i just give
3:18 pm
to our viewer giavani. kamau, after putting out the video and i know that was the launch one, what are you going to be talking about. >> we're hearing from a lot of communities, from latinx folks who want to share. this has been successful enough that they're looking into ways to do these videos. like pastor jackie is saying, it's not just about hesitancy but giving people information >> i say we. i was just cast in this thing. they're currently working on videos, trying to do videos for other communities >> hey, you mentioned having a sore arm, kamau. what other side effects did you have. how long did you have it and which one did you get? >> i think i got all of them because i like to be the person
3:19 pm
who does all the work. i will take feels tired. i'll take the chills. i will take i feel weak. i had a potpourri of symptoms. i got it on wednesday. wait, what day is today. i don't know. it's a pandemic. >> it's thursday. >> i got it on a tuesday. today is the day i feel 100% back to regular but the person who gave me the shot said you may feel look you have a cold or the flu is coming on. the other thing that's important is that people recognize that and can plan their life accordingly. in the everybody can do that. >> i mean, did you have people talking to you when you did the your shot over there at the
3:20 pm
church. did people find the fact that you were out there as a social influencer if we can call you that, had an impact? >> well, when i was a kid, kristen, i said i wanted to be a social influencer. >> that wasn't a job category when you were a kid. >> that paid zero dollars a year. >> . >> anything else you want to test us on? we want a chance to redeem our self-s >> now you're asking me to improv which i'm more than happy to do. true or false, we say operation warp speed like the science was rushed but mrna technology has been researched for about five years s that true or false? >> don't answer, kamau, since you know. i'm going to say true. what did you this pastor
3:21 pm
jackie? >> i'm going to say true >> kamau, what do you think? >> it's longer than five years. >> it's longer. >> if you check out the video that kamau made, it's about ten to 12 years. as pastor jackie mentioned people look at the vaccine. we keep calling it warp speed, fastest vaccine in the history. that makes people think we cut corners. hey, we're going to profit. in actuality mrna was looked at for over a decade. >> so since my two teammates got it right, like two out of three, can you give that to us. i moon, my wrong answer doesn't work. is that how this works in. >> that's fair. >> ex

3:23 pm
3:24 pm
and we are back with abc7 special correspondent dr. alok patel, pastor jackie thompson from allen temple baptist church in oakland and host of united shades of america w. kamau bell. >> and social influencer >> and social influencer. >> yes. you know what? we have time for everone to give their final message. this has been a conversation. no pressure, a minute. pastor thompson, start with you? >> i actually had my vaccination today. i was declared a frontline worker. i have a 91-year-old mother who i care give for. so i encourage everyone to learn. the information is out there. there are people fighting behind the scenes in every area to make sure there's equitable
3:25 pm
access in our community. while it's there i encourage you to take advantage of it. you never know who who who up. kristen, thank you for having me on and dr. patel, great to meet you. >> kamau, you go next. >> i've been honored to go to allen temple and i hope they empower more pastor jackies around the state especially as it opens up to 15 and over and 16 and over. the more they can go to their on hoods to get this, the better. >> dr. patel. >> and for representing what matters to the black community and what people need. there's a big difference between equality and equity. equality is based on the fact
3:26 pm
that everyone has the same resources. that's not true. we have this barriers indicater it. vaccine equity has to be in place and the first step toward public health equity moving forward. we don't want to see this disparity ever again. >> pastor jackie, do we have 30 seconds? please, for those who missed the top of the show, can you give us information on the mobile clinics that will be happening next week. >> we are providing mobile vaccinations tuesday, wednesday and thursday of next week and the following week starting at 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. there are appointments walkups available.
3:27 pm
send it to inknow info@allentemple.org. >> share the picture of the vaccine with pastor jackie. >> indeed.
