this is the moment people have been waiting for. a first round of shots given today in an area virtually ignored in the vaccination effort. your health is one area we focus on in our commitment to build a better bay area. that includes tracking the states vaccination program. today that effort focused on the san francisco neighborhood that has the lowest vaccination rate in the city. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard checked out the new vaccination site on treasure island. >> reporter: you could be a role model. mike mead was one of the 1st to get his shot at this pop-up vaccine site at the shipshape community center on treasure island. >> i'm grateful that it's so easy to get instead of waiting for months and months. >> i'm so happy. >> reporter: this vaccine site a joint effort with the department of public health and the fire department. the first ever on ti. berkeley sanders says it's about time. >> most people in san francisco that i have dealt with or talked with like my friends

don't even realize people live out here. >> reporter: they do. this week volunteers knocked on just about every door on the island telling eligible residents about the vaccine opportunity. 3000 people live here on treasure island and just 14% have been vaccinated. it's one of the lowest vaccination rates in san francisco. matt haney advocated for the pop-up site. he says treasure island is an underserved community often under looked by the city. >> people have technology and language barriers. they may be disabled or not have transportation. >> i don't like going into the city. >> reporter: california has prioritized ti on the lowest list of incomes for equitable access. a big turnout saturday for 150 doses of the moderna vaccine. the pop-up clinic will be back for the next two saturdays. second doses are being scheduled too.

kayleen has lived on treasure island 17 years. her shot means a new start. >> i'm feeling so happy and safe. it's a shot of life for everyone here. >> reporter: on treasure island in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. cases of kopitar on the rise in 22 states. health officials are urging people to be patient hoping to ward off another wave. stephanie ramos has more about the renewed push to follow health guidelines. >> reporter: health officials are expressing concern over a potential surge in cases of covid-19 even as millions of americans get vaccinated. >> we might start seeing a resurgence of cases, which would be unfortunate. if we can hold on just a bit longer, we could get a lot more people vaccinated which would make that surge less likely. >> reporter: 22 states reporting increases in the last week. the cdc urging americans to follow public health measures like wearing a mask and social distancing. >> this has been a long year.

>> reporter: vaccine distribution continues to ramp up across the country. johnson & johnson on track to deliver 20 million doses by the end of march. 11 million set to go out next week. president biden now doubling his vaccination goal. >> 200 million shots in 100 days. >> reporter: 47 states are set to expand eligibility making the vaccine available to everyone over the age of 16. by the president's may 1st deadline. after california's governor expanded eligibility some healthcare workers are looking to bring vaccines to underserved communities. >> to go with organized labor to where people work. going to houses of worship. >> reporter: now the state of new york is launching an app that's called excelsior. it's basically a vaccine passport. it's completely voluntary but the app allows businesses and venues to scan and validate your pass to make sure

or testing requirements for entry. stephanie ramos, abc news, new york. we know you have questions about covid and the vaccines and we are here to help you you can learn all about effectiveness and side effects and much more. we are also answering your questions that come up as well. you can find it all at abc7news.com/vaccine. a national day of action saw numerous rallies all across the country against the recent rise in violence against asian americans. several of the events took lace here in the bay area. abc 7 was at one of the rallies against racism that started outside san francisco city hall. you can see more than 100 people took organizer say they have had enough and people are living in fear. >> having too much violence, robberies to the elderly and women and children. families are in fear of even walking the streets now. we just don't feel safe anymore. >> after the rally outside city hall the group took to the street for a march.

you can see those numbers steadily rising. the group met with another one at union square for yet another rally. to the south bay where community members want their voices heard. they gathered at saratoga city hall to protest racism against asian americans. saratoga mayor joined mayors from other south bay cities to show their support for the aapi community. on the peninsula, community members rallied against racism and redwood city. gathered this afternoon at the shopping center near jefferson avenue and el camino real. organizer say they are showing solidarity with the vic dems of the atlanta shooting spree and demanding an end to racism. the activists group cosponsored today's event.

have prevented burning more than 3 million acres in 2019. that is according to a new analysis. a firm contracted by state utility regulators says the shutoffs also may have stopped 250,000 buildings from burning. the company combine data about vegetation conditions, weather and building conditions and wind damage to determine those numbers. people in 30 california counties were without power during the shutoffs. developing news now. the massive container ship blocking one of the world's busiest waterways could be freed as soon as tonight. a senior pilot at the suez canal is the combination of high tides and powerful tugboats could be the key to dislodging the 224 ton ship.

the vessel got stuck in the ground on tuesday after being caught in a powerful sandstorm. right now 300 cargo ships are caught in a traffic jam costing global trade billions of dollars. your morning cup of joe could start to cost you a little more. still churned out a record number of coffee beans, but they aren't reaching their final destination. because of the pandemic there's a shipping container shortage which makes moving things around the world more difficult. coffee stockpiles in the u.s. are at a six year low and supply shortage could lead to a price increase. congresswoman jackie speier hosted an annual event aimed at inspiring students to pursue their dreams. called when i grow up, the event included a speech from the bay area born nasa astronaut. >> if you never try, you never know. you should never discount yourself. i didn't. i put my name in the hat and after about a year and a half long process of interviewing at nasa i was selected in 2013. >> that is good advice. she is scheduled to go to the international space station this year and may become the first woman to walk on the moon. the coo of zoom spoke to

bright orange california poppies that cover the hills around lake elsinore will be absent this year. it's been

for the past two springs, but it doesn't seem like we will see a repeat this year of that epic super bloomberg the poppies cover about 1600 acres of hillside along the 15 freeway. right now there are purple and yellow flowers in walker canyon, but nothing compared to the past super blooms. this winter the region has only gotten about 4 inches of rain leaving mostly dry brush. >> i took so many photos of the dog sitting in the middle of them. pictures of me sitting in them. >> quite the attraction. thousands of people descended on the area last spring and the spring before even jamming up traffic for miles. that prompted the city to shut down access. something that they won't have to worry about this year. a future ballet star could be discovered in san francisco this weekend. young america grand prix is holding auditions and provided this video to abc 7. it's yielded as the first student competition and features hundreds of participants ages 9 to 19. additions are socially distanced and this one of 25 is taking place across the u.s. where the winners get scholarships. in the south bay,

harlow park and zoo is celebrating a special anniversary with a surprise party. the party is for its longtime mascot turning 60. with a little help from captain conservation and friends, they tracked down danny and the party was on. the san jose zoo is open, but reservations are required. the rights, theater, playground and eating areas are still closed because of pandemic restrictions. speaking of the pandemic, it didn't feel like it in a lot of parts of san francisco today. no matter where you live, people were out and about enjoying the sunshine. near record warmth today. we got into the 70s if not close to 80 degrees with tons of sunshine. let's show you the tam cam. we have sun soaked skies. it's really a nice evening on the way. we made it to 69 in the city this afternoon. we cooled off a little bit down

year. here's live doppler 7 a huge area of high pressure. it's blocking any storm system from moving into california. it's supplying that warm, sunny weather for another day. future weather, one of the small changes you will notice closer to the coast. a little bit of fog returns in the morning. it looks like the fog will cling pretty close tomorrow. while we will see a lot of sunshine, the coast will see a cooldown for sunday afternoon. tonight we will find that fog developing. otherwise away from the coast you have plenty of stars. overnight lows mainly in the mid 40s as we start tomorrow morning. highs on sunday starting in the south bay. another bright and warm date at 77. 76 for santa clara. 78 for morgan hill. redwood city, palo alto low to mid 70s. that fog will bring about the cooling effect along the coast.
