that doesn't even include the state's change that gives over 7 million people their first chance to make an appointment for a coronavirus vaccine. with that we say good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. there is a lot to look forward to this week. on thursday, april 1st, california expands vaccine eligibility to anyone over the age of 50, no medical condition required. it is the first of two expansions. on april 15th everyone over age 16 can sign up for a shot, but are bay area counties ready for this influx of people to get vaccinated in the next two weeks? abc7 news reporter luz pena, part of our vaccine team, spoke to a ucsf expert who says counties need to change their strategy. >> reporter: the day is approaching. come april 1st the entire state will open vaccine eligibility to those 50 and older. >> it is going to be a

rush. >> reporter: ucsf's infectious disease doctor saying counties need to equip their vaccine teams now and gear up for the upcoming two weeks. >> what's called nano particle that had to go around the mrna vaccine was making things slow and we knew in february they'd increase supply of that. so it actually makes sense that we'll have the slye. >> reporter: but counties like santa clara say they're concerned the bottleneck will continue to be not having enough vaccine. >> basically talking about having a scarcity of vaccine and that continues. >> reporter: they're projected to receive 58,000 doses of the covid-19 vaccine on monday, a number that is not even close to the number of people who will qualify come thursday. >> the number of people in our county between 50 and 64 where we are now is 400,000 people. >> reporter: on the other side of this spectrum is contra costa county. they have already been vaccinating those 50 and older. so as it stands now, does your county have enough vaccine supply to meet that demand come

county advanced into the orange tier last week joining san mateo. the orange tier allows more businesses to reopen,albeit with restrictions and increases indoor capacity limits. tomorrow san rafael city elementary schools will end online classes. all students will be in a classroom five days a week. they've been doing a mix of in- person and at-home learning since november and because marin county is in the orange tier, san rafael can bring students back all the time for its seven elementary schools as well as its k through 8 school venetia valley. on tuesday students will return to class in the oakland school district for the first time. this is just for pre-k through second grade students. they can choose whether to go into school or not. úteachers a choose between on-site and remote teaching. about a third have chosen to go back into the classroom which means some schools won't have enough teachers to reopen. oakland schools are closed

tomorrow to observe cesar chavez day. free rides on vta in the south bay end thursday. their collection has been suspended during the pandemic so riders wouldn't have to approach of the operator where the fare boxes are located, but with case rates low and transit operators already getting vaccinated, the risk isn't as high as it was before. parking fees at san jose city parks that were paused because of the pandemic are also coming back on thursday. the fees were waived last march to encourage people to get outside since it was safer than being with other people indoors. moving on, there is some good news for thursday, it is opening day for the a's. tickets are for sale, although keep in mind they must be bought in advance. there are no walk-up sales. fans do have to wear a mask. they'll be seated in pods maintaining a six-foot distance from other households. you can buy food and drinks. that will be delivered to your seat. state rules do discourage the

audience from "yelling, singing, chanting or booing." we should have pretty good weather for the game. abc news meteorologist drew tuma has more on the forecast and really some stunning weather today and going forward. >> i mean really this weekend both yesterday and today, tons of sunshine, temperatures in the 70s for the most part. it was beautiful on the bay waters today, just a light chop, tons of sunshine, people out and about running, saw people hiking, biking, whatever you were doing outside, you were enjoying these temperatures. tonight, though, those numbers are falling through the 40s and 50s. we're running 5 to 8 degrees cooler compared to this time last night. we have a frost advisory starting at 1 a.m. early tomorrow morning for lake and mendocino county for temperatures in the low to mid- 30s. future track for temperatures will start tomorrow morning in the 40s and then we'll slowly warm up into the 60s by lunchtime, but tomorrow afternoon it's a windier, a

to rally for justice in the death of a black man shot and killed by police. officials had previously said the man, tyrell wilson, had a knife and advanced toward the officer when he was shot. today family members and his attorney questioned that. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone is following this story. >> i just feel like my heart has just been ripped out. >> reporter: a father reacting after his 33-year-old son tyrell wilson who suffered from mental health issues was shot and killed by a danville police officer earlier this month saying police should have deescalated the situation instead of firing a shot that proved to be fatal. >> he shot my son in the face and he needs to be held accountable for that. >> they think just because he was homeless. he had people that cared about him and loved him and i loved that boy to death. >> reporter: police have previously said they responded to a report of someone throwing

rocks onto interstate 680 in danville. upon arriving in the area they came across wilson later releasing this image of him and going on to say that he pulled out a folding knife, didn't drop it like he was ordered to and advanced towards the officer. >> it was a question about an officer, about someone throwing rocks, we don't know if that's that person or not. i'll tell you everything i know about mr. wilson to suggest he's not the person, but even so that's not a basis to kill someone. >> reporter: dozens took to the streets of danville sunday including oscar grant's uncle bobby who believes that had tyrell been white, he wouldn't have been shot. >> but when it's a person of color, the engagement is totally different. >> apparently this deputy has a problem that he needs to be removed. >> reporter: the family's attorney john burris tells me at this point they have not filed a lawsuit, but that could change in the coming weeks. >> the officer who fired the

fatal shot, andrew hall, is on paid administrative leave per department policy. investigators and the d.a.'s office are reviewing the incident. hall, an officer more than seven years, also shot and killed a man while on duty in 2018. moving on to a big development from overseas, the gigantic cargo ship that has been blocking the suez canal has been partially freed. shipping officials say salvage teams were able to partially refloat the mv ever given thanks in part to a high tide. authorities do caution that the complicated operation is still underway, but there is increasing confidence that shipping would soon resume in the canal. the supersized ship ran aground along one of the world's most important trade routes some six days ago. the mayor of nashville has declared a state of emergency after record breaking rainfall that left parts of the city under water. take a look. the torrential rains flooded homes and at least one church

and roads. other streets were badly damaged. at least four people were killed and more than 130 people had to be rescued. >> they received more than seven inches of rain over the past 48 hours. now that is the second highest two-day rainfall total in our history. >> in indiana a 40-year-old man was killed when severe thunderstorms toppled a massive tree there. witnesses say he was trying to escape from the storm and thes aerial images show some of the damage in east texas where roofs ripped off and trees snapped. really the scope of the devastation is pretty remarkable, drew. thankfully we have nothing close to the sort here. >> yeah. thankfully for them and many in the south the weather's going to calm down over the next several days so they can really recover from what has been a couple of days of some very strong storms. for us tomorrow it's all about changing winds that will eventually bring even warmer weather, if you can believe, warmer than this weekend was,

over the next couple days. sutro tower now, a live look, fog overhead. however, the fog is not going to stay with us overnight tonight. it's going to clear out before the sun gets up here tomorrow morning and we'll see a lot of sunshine in the forecast. numbers right now, the fog is certainly bringing a cooling influence down to 43 in novato, 49 in the city, the same haywood, 51 in palo alto, 51 in concord. what will bring about the winds tomorrow, there's a cold front about to move into northern california. unfortunately with this dry air mass we have overhead right now it cannot support any rainfall. this front will move through without any moisture. it's just going to kick up our winds over the next couple of days. future tracker wind gusts showing you by lunchtime tomorrow we'll find the strongest winds likely right along the immediate coastline where those winds will gust close to 30 miles per hour. are we're going to keep those winds in the forecast even

through tuesday, but with tuesday that wind becomes more offshore in its direction. that's a warm wind for us this time of year and it's likely going to gust 20, 30, even close to 40 miles per hour tuesday dragging in that warmer air with it. overnight tonight we have the fog right now. it's going to begin to clear out the next several hours. so we'll turn to mostly clear skies across the bay area, numbers mainly in the low and mid-40s first thing tomorrow morning. with that wind and cold front moving through it's going to knock temperatures down a couple of degrees tomorrow compared to today, but still it's a pretty mild forecast to start off the new week, 71 in santa clara and san jose, a lot of sunshine, 72 the high in gilroy. along the peninsula we'll hit 66 in san mateo, 68 in redwood city, windy along the coast, 59 or pacifica. downtown in the city tomorrow it's a windy day, a lot of sunshine. it's bright, however, temperatures around 64 downtown, cooler along the coast in the upper 50s with that wind. the north bay into the 70s, 74

building a better bay area moving forward finding solutions, this is abc7 news. once again good evening. i'm dion lim. in tonight's headlines now california's vaccine eligibility expands this week. everyone between the ages of 50 and 64 are eligible for shots starting thursday. some counties are expanding eligibility to other groups as well. contra costa county says they expect to expand eligibility to anyone 16 years old and up by the end of this week. california will expand eligibility to everyone 16 and up by april 15th. rallies took place across the bay area today calling for

an end to violence targeting the aapi community. hundreds participated in a show of solidarity at civic center plaza in san francisco organized by the asian-american christian collaborative. more than 400 marched from hillsboro to burlingame in yet another event. and dozens took to the streets of danville calling for justice in the death of a black man who was shot and killed by a police officer earlier this month. 32-year-old tyrell wilson's family is disputing law enforcement's account of the confrontation that led to the shooting. sheriff's officials said wilson had a knife and advanced toward a danville officer. wilson's wilson's familied mili may file a legal claim against the city in the coming weeks. the trial of derek chauvin begins tomorrow, the former minneapolis police officer charged with killing george floyd last year.

floyd's death sparked protests in the bay area and around the world. >> reporter: the trial of derek chauvin is set to begin monday. the former minneapolis police officer is charged with killing george floyd on memorial day in 2020 facing manslaughter, second and third degree murder charges pleading not guilty to all charges. video from bystanders taken that day show chauvin who is white kneeling on floyd's neck as the black man lay handcuffed face down in the streets more than nine minutes. monday the jury will begin listening to opening statements. >> basically it's making a first impression. each side is going to lay out for the first time what their theory in the case is. >> reporter: of the 14 jurors expected to be seated eight self-identify as white and six as people of color. one member of floyd's family will be in court each day. the family's attorney telling msnbc he's prepared his clients. >> we're going to see that video over and over again. they're also going to hear them assassinate the character of george floyd.

was quickly put out. no one was hurt. the ntsb is investigating. to the south bay where a historic apartment building is putting down roots at a new address, abc7 was in san jose as crews moved the palison apartments earlier today. you can see the building on a giant dolly trucked to its new home about 900 feet away. now it's located at the corner of fourth and reed streets. habitat for humanity plans to refurbish the 111-year-old building and convert it into affordable housing. one woman says it was worth the trip from menlo park to see the move happen. >> it's a wonderful thing on all sorts of levels. it's preserving a wonderful old building. it's going to go to a good use. everybody got together to work this out. it's just a win/win/win. >> not to mention quite a sight. time lapse video shows the

building backed into its whole lot. the whole process took about three hours. there was dancing at the departure gate at sfo this morning for a very special flight. united airlines today relaunched its nonstop flight between san francisco and new york's kennedy airport. the airline's return to jfk comes six years after it pulled out of the airport. united consolidated all sfo transcontinental flights at its hub across the hudson in newark, new jersey. the pandemic as we all know has done a number on the airline business and the downturn has allowed united to return to kennedy with boeing 767 flights from sfo and l.a.x. san francisco's ocean beach was turned into a canvas today. the earthscape art experience ventured out this afternoon and the team shared videos of some of its previous projects. you can see there how the sand is just transformed into these intricate works of art. the organizer explained the
