with eligibility sets expand on april 1st the californians ages 50 and up just how soon could we see more slots available? that answer is complicated and varies from county to county. >> we want people to keep checking. you really have to keep checking. about santa clara county the bay area's largest county only received 58,000 doses from state. to put it in perspective starting thursday an additional 400,000 county residents will become eligible to receive the vaccine. >> we have the capacity to vaccinate all those people. we just need the vaccine. that is out of our control. we are edthva wi arin april.inril. apin april. >> reporter: counties and healthcare providers that get their allocation from the state

county opened up thousands of vaccine appointments next week. thanks to an increase inin it is encouraging everyone 50 and older who works or lives in the county to make an appointment. everyone 16 and older could be eligible as soon as tomorrow. request an appointment now on the contra costa county health services website. as of today more than 6.2 million californians are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. the state is administering more than 306,000 doses per day. the state reported just under 2300 newly diagnosed covid cases today. y rates h indicates the spread of the virus is that 1.6%. the cdc director is worried as the covid cases continue to climb in at least during an interview today dr. rochelle walensky became emotional saying this could undo much of america's progress against the virus. >> reflect on the current feeling i have of impending doom. we have so much to look forward

schools will begin oakland schools would begin reopening tomorrow. only younger kids will be allowed in the classrooms and it will be a different experience for them and their families. we walk you through the process. >> the school district and some teachers are treating this as a trial run. remember nobody has been in that classroom since last march. so oakland is a pretty large urban district. tomorrow we will only see pre-k to second grade students returning. this is only a fraction of the entire student body. >> oakland unified said close to 58% of families with the youngest students said they would return to in person learning. >> will be expected to be high? probably not. >> reporter: tomorrow and some school start reopening that every teacher will be there. the school district told us because of this week is optional for teachers only 38% of them opted to return.

but all teachers must come back by april 19th. >> we still had no soap inms. >> reporter: one reason olivia decided to delay her return. she was allowed to do an inspection upper school and found the support staff won't all be there. >> parents cannot come on campus and cannot walk their kid to the classroom. who is going to do that was mac who is going to help a kid who is scared and upset and having separation anxiety? >> reporter: i asked his mother if she was sending her first- grade daughter to school tomorrow. they too will wait until april 19th when her third-grade son will be allowed to return. they attend the same school. >> i'm excited. because teachers are getting vaccinated. about the district said it will be a different experience for students because of all the protocols in place due to covid. oakland parents were sent information on the return to in person learning. >> it is about socialization and getting in person learning going on. in person instruction.

it is just about reminding everybody what it is like to be around people again. >> reporter: those who go back will be in hybrid mode two days in person and three days online. if your child's teacher has decided not to return tomorrow there will likely be a substitute teacher. and i have to tell you that make some parents uncomfortable because all of this time the student has been working right online with that teacher that they know. that may be another reason why they have decided to wait until april 19th when all teachers return. >> the san ramon valley school district welcomed thousands of his students back this morning. that includes monta vista high school in danville. they will be in class four days a week. elementary schools reopen tomorrow. 30% of the student body opted in for in person learning. >> some are at 70%. some are at 20%.

preschools are still completely remote based upon those parent choices. >> the district said it is as close to normal as it can be. they are currently planning for a five day week for in person learning this summer and fall. they will continue to offer remote option but are encouraging students to come back to campus. castro valley school district reopened to third through fifth grade students today. students will be split up into two groups. a morning group and afternoon group. they have to complete a daily health screening. parents have to show up at specific pickup and drop-off locations. >> it is nerve-racking. we want to make sure that they are social distancing and keeping their masks on. all the parents at home are still concerned. so definitely looking forward to vaccinations being available for all of us. >> kindergarten through second graders have been back to school on a hybrid schedule for a couple weeks now.

to asian-american seniors in oakland are feeling on edge after they say their vehicles were set on fire. this happened on 26th avenue not far from 880. according to abc seven news anchor they along with others in the neighborhood have reason to believe they may have been targeted because of their race. >> reporter: this is the site to seniors woke up to around 3:30 saturday morning.>> this must've been scary for you. >> it is terrible. >> reporter: raging flames and two cars set ablaze. mr. chang who only wants to use his last name owns one of them. the other belonging to his neighbor who does not want to be identified. both vehicles charred to crisp >> at a time when so many asian ing under attack. mr. chang who is cambodian and his neighbor chinese cannot help but feel like they were targeted. he said there were only two homes owned by asians along this road. the rest latino.

take a live look at the santa cruz beach boardwalk which is reopening rise on thursday. they're open for california residents and walkup capacity will be limited. the boardwalk is recommending people reserve rides ahead of time on the website. reservations are open between april 1st and april 11th with windows for later reservations opening in the coming weeks. the san francisco chronicle reports must only center it will reopen at the end of september for conferences. the american society for surgery of the hand is booked for september 30th through october 2nd. it is the first booking since the onset of the pandemic. organizers say they expect just about everyone who attends the conference will be vaccinated by then. the winds are starting to pick up again. pick up again. we could see strong so you just scored amazing savings at ross? mmm-hmm. on brands that take you from me time...
