i so badly want to be done and i know you want to be badly done. we are almost there but not quite yet. >> words of caution from the director of the cdc and a stark warning as well tonight. thank you for joining us. >> federal health officials issued a warning about a fourth covid wave but our vaccine team member spoke to bay area doctors who have a different perspective. >> reporter: i spoke to multiple bay area doctors and some of them are involved in contact tracing and they told me they have a very different message than the cdc director had today, they want californians to remain vigilant and they say will we are well on our way to good news. an emotional plea from cdc director rochelle walensky asking americans to hold on a little longer amid here's of a fourth covid wave.

hospital admissions are up more than 10 percent across 17 states in the last week. the number of deaths are also rising. >> so much reason for hope but right now i'm scared. >> are you as concerned about this possible surge is the cdc director? >> i really am not. in fact, i'm feeling really hopeful and optimistic that we are going in the right direction. i think it was a little alarmist. >> reporter: ucsf infectious disease specialist says there's evidence to support optimism. in california, covid cases and deaths are down, the only number going up right now is vaccines administered. >> 42 percent of us have received one dose, we had 29 percent antibody prevalence as estimated by the state of california a month ago.

>> is there a difference between san francisco the bay area, california and a lot of these east coast and midwest states that are seeing a search right now? >> yes, i do actually see a difference. we are not using all of our restrictions, we are doing it carefully and prudently. some of these places like michigan didn't have immunity. >> reporter: another doctor part of our vaccine team says if there is a fourth wave, we should now have a question. >> a large proportion of americans above the age of 65 including those at high risk have gotten the vaccine so even if we see surges, fingers crossed we won't see as many hospitalizations or deaths as we saw in the first three waves. >> reporter: more good news as we get closer to opening up vaccine eligibility in california, on thursday, the state is allowing anyone 50 in order to get their covid vaccine and two weeks later on april 15, eligibility expands to anyone 16 and older. we are on vaccine watch in our ongoing effort to help build a better eight bay area.

efforts are underway across santa clara county to provide vulnerable residents with vaccinations and agencies tell our reporter that new mobile vaccine units will make a difference. >> reporter: the goal is to get covid-19 vaccinations to those who need protection most. in santa clara county it's the same population able to get around the least, housebound residents. >> being able to reach them adequately is important and this will help capture that last piece of the group that we really want to reach. >> reporter: in an effort expected to launch within the next week, the santa clara clare county fire says the department and other ems agencies will use their own equipment to get dozes out for in-home vaccine delivery and in true the mobile teams will be taking direction from the county public health department. >> it takes effort for public health to identify those groups and individuals and get a list in place and get us out there. >> reporter: in another approach announced monday, san jose is mayor

leaders pointed to $200,000 in funding for a new and separate mobile vaccine unit. money was raised by silicon valley companies and organizations. this unit would similarly serve housebound elderly, disabled, and other residents in underserved areas. >> we have a lot of people to vaccinate and while we are moving quickly in our county, we can't miss anybody who wants to be vaccinated. mobile units like this are going to allow us to make sure that everybody in our community gets across the finish line. >> reporter: in both efforts, vaccine distribution is completely dependent on supply. in the east bay, contra costa county officials say they are

in the vaccine rollout. 45 percent of the county's 1.2 million residents have been vaccinated. contra costa county is home to 11 federal health centers which means an increased allotment of doses from the government. it is so far ahead of schedule health officials say eligibility could open to residents 16 and over two weeks ahead of california schedule. >> it could be as early as tomorrow or late as sometime next week. >> the county added more than 1000 new appointments this week for residents 50 and older and it's encouraging everyone eligible to sign up on the contra costa county health services website. we have a team of reporters and medical experts to answer your vaccine questions every day, you can submit your questions on abc7news.com/vaccine for education is a key pillar in building a better bay area and more schools are welcoming students back on campus this week. kindergarten through second grade returned to berkeley's classrooms, unlike many bay area school districts, the students will be getting in person learning five days a week. the classrooms were pretty full today but with plenty of plexiglas and masks and just about all of the teachers are now vaccinated.

in the north bay students waved goodbye to distanced learning as san rafael's elementary schools reopened. much like berkeley students, they will be in the classroom five days a week all sorts of precautions including teachers and students wearing masks and everybody putting safety first. classes like arts and music will remain virtually for the time being. san francisco's montco monk only center is going to reopen for conferences in september. organizers say they about everyone who attends will be vaccinated by then. the last conference was in february of last year for san mateo county says it is planning to hold its county fair this year, there will be smaller crowds based on tier status, fewer exhibits and you will need to make a reservation. the fair is scheduled to run nine days starting june 5.

six flags discovery kingdom says it will reopen its rides and attractions this thursday, the park says you must use th nereion sy ey can control the number of people coming in. discovery kingdom has been partially reopened since july. rides will reopen thursday at santa cruz beach boardwalk, they will open only to california residents and walkup capacity will be limited. the boardwalk recommends people reserve rides ahead of time on their website. three more bay area counties are poised to go orange, this is where things currently stand in the states colored safety tier system, an announcement is expected tomorrow that alameda, napa, and sonoma will make the jump into the less restricted orange deer. if that happens, only celano, contra costa, and santa cruz counties would remain in the red deer. our reporter has a look at how businesses in areas about to change tears are preparing for relaxed rules. >> reporter: five-year-old john henry is talking about covid- 19, the youngster was eating

chp release this video showing an east bay sideshow chase and arrest yesterday, all of it happened in broad daylight. it started at about 6 pm on the pomona offramp from i-80. one driver led the chp on a pursuit all the way to the bay bridge, the driver was later arrested by oakland police. the chp is looking for more suspects and another sideshow happened last night in san francisco at 13th and folsom streets. someone stole hundreds of whistles from a group looking to help asian seniors protect themselves. dozens of volunteers have been busy assembling them throughout san francisco. organizers left boxes out in front of the home for people to pick up and finish putting together some of the whistles but someone swiped them. those behind the project are disappointed. >> we were sad because people wanted to help community anou feel safe but for someone to come by during the daytime and steal these whistles that wouldn't benefit them in any way is
