to 15. jobina is live with what we're learning. >> reporter: it's a promising first step toward vaccinating younger americans. the news comes from the results of a pfizer trial that enrolled around 2200 children ages 12 to 15. some participants received a placebo. others got the vaccine. several with the placebo developed covid-19 but none of the vaccinated children became infected. this is promising news. >> this is really a high level of efficacy. 100% of kids were vaccinated. no side atwee stovethe a do th full evaluation. i think this is terrific. >> what's next here? pfizer says in the coming weeks it will ask the fda to update vaccine authorization to include children 12 and older and many are seeing this as a good turning point as schools prepare for a greater return to in person learning in the fall.

reggie. >> that is great news. thank you. speaking of vaccines, availability is growing in the east bay. rs california ounty is where anyone 16 and older is eligible to get a vaccine. once the site is running at full speed it'll be able to give shots to 15,000 people a week. but even before this the county says there were thousands of available appointments for this week. >> because we have unfilled appointment slots, we want to get shots in arms. we don't want these variants to outrun us. the county is making it available now for those 16 and over basically no restrictions to get vaccinated. >> currently about 25% of contra costa county's adults are fully vaccinated. starting tomorrow anyone above the age of 50 now eligible for the covid-19 vaccine in california. supply is a huge concern for counties ahead of what is

expected to be a large turnout. abc 7 news reporter matt boone live at a new vaccine clcl concord this morning. >> reporter: this site is going to be key in the implementation of this expansion. although contra costa county has had eligibility for 50 and over for a couple weeks now. so the expansion to 16 for this area is going to create more demand out here. overall the state is going to be moving into that 50 and over tier tomorrow. that's going to cause a lot of demand as well as opse apintments. so far the state says about 2 million californians over the age of 50 have already at least received one shot. but there's still 11 million people in that age group that have not been vaccinated at all. so this decision is being made with the knowledge that an increasing supply and steady supply of vaccine is heading our way. but what has always been the challenge for counties and healthcare providers is that

it's hard to schedule appointments just on the promise of having that increased dose allocation. so even with these mass vaccination sites running at full capacity it will take weeks to administer that many doses. a member of the advisory board says the rush to find an appointment on the website tomorrow will be something like we haven't done since the pandemic began. >> in a way it feels like we're trying to get concert tickets. there's a my other concern. when people start going online on april 1st how long are they going to be waiting? >> reporter: the state expects to get 2.5 million doses a week by mid april. that'll expand to 3 million doses by the end of april. if you are eligible or about to be eligible for 50 and older tomorrow you can go to the state's myturn.com website and start signing up now to be notified when you do become eligible. reporting live this morning in

concord, matt boone, abc 7 news. >> thank you, matt. happening today, about 500 farm workers in santa clara county are set to receive their second dose of covid-19 vaccine. it's been a month since they got their first vaccination at monterey mushrooms farm. organizers say it's fitting they get their second vaccine on caesar chavez day. first lady jill biden will be in it central california. she's meeting with farm workers. the first lady will tour a vaccination clinic at the 40 acres. that's founded by civil rights leader caesar chavez. governor newsom and first partner will join dr. biden. organizers picked today for their fourth vaccine clinic. businesses in alameda county are reopening in the less restrictive orange tier today. alameda and santa cruz counties moved from red to orange

yesterday. now the orange tier means indoor gym capacity can go from 10 to 25%. restaurants, movie theaters and churches can increase capacity to 50% and bars can reopen outdoors without food. now napa county was not able to leave the red tier because of a rise in cases last week. county officials say there was an outbreak at the veterans home of california. and they believe up to 25 people may have been affected at that facility. but that means napa county couldn't move into the orange tier this week. , now right now it's not clear when napa county will be moving into the orange tier. it could be next week given the number of vaccinations that are currently underway. and you can see where your county stands in the reopening process any time on our website. this map shows you what's open and what's closed in each tier and you can find it at abc7news.com. this morning we're expecting more dramatic testimony in the trial of the former police ofcharged

with george floyd's death. an off-duty minneapolis firefighter who says she was stopped from trying to save oyofthis testimony in the trial. >> yes, and the first two days were emotional and at times hard to watch. yesterday firefighter genevieve hansen told the court when she saw george floyd's condition she was immediately concerned. at the time hansen was offduty but did identify herself as a firefighter. hansen says she asked if she could provide medical help or at least show officers how to check for a pulse and perform first aid. in the courtroom there was a tense exchange with derek chauvin's defense attorney. he claimed chauvin was distracted by a crowd that showed up which prevented him from responding to george floyd's rapidly deteriorating condition, then suggested the same thing would have happened to hansen. >> i would be confident in doing my job and there's nothing anybody could say that would distract me.

a u.s. resident who has spent time in san jose is facing charges for a crash that killed 13 people near the u.s.- mexico border. charged with conspiracy to bring migrants to the u.s. he's thought to be part of a smuggling operation involved in this crash california. earlier this month a semi truck collided with an suv packed with 25 people inside. many of them were from mexico and guatemala. san francisco wine shop owners are on the lookout for a burglar who may be a

connoisseur. the owner of wine boutique biondivino shared this surveillance video with us of someone trying to break in last thursday. he left the scene empty handed after setting off an alarm. three other wine shops also experienced similar burglaries last week. now the thief seems to be targeting only rare and expensive brands valued at hundreds of dollars a bottle. being a wine bar setup you don't have prices on the bottles. it's a wine list. so the person would have to know what they were after. >> san francisco police haven't released crime reports about these burglaries yet. workers at cio'ancisco's an popular tartine bakery have unionized. last year the bakery's management challenged some of the ballots from the vote. the case worked its way to the national board. a new ruling by the national labor relations board allowed for 10 ballots to be counted giving union supporters a

not spread covid-19. but now the agency is suggesting otherwise. jobina with more on this. >> yes, this is an incredible development here. covid-19 cases are rising nationwide. but cdc director dr. rochelle walensky is sharing positive news in the fight against the virus. during an interview yesterday, walensky touted new cdc data that suggests vaccinated people do not carry the virus and they cannot become infected. this means they can't spread it to others. dr. walensky was referring to a recent study of 4000 frontline workers. researchers found the pfizer and moderna vaccines were 90% effective at preventing infections. these findings are important because they show how effective vaccines are in real life conditions despite that positive news, because it is very positive here, walensky is worried about a fourth surge of

time to book it. matt boone showing us the new drive up site in concord. matt. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, this opened yesterday and they are still taking appointments adding capacity in contra costa county as they expand into eligibility for those 16 and older. big day out here. this drive through site when it's fully operational could have 15,000 doses a week. contra costa county health officials say they decided to get rid of the tiered system and allow access to all adults because they were getting to the point where they had more vaccines than appointment signups. last week the county received 84,000 doses, up 30,000 from the week before. part of that has to do with the fact the county has been getting doses from the federal government as well for 11 federal health clinics in the area. they now expect a rush and that the signup system could be

backed up. they recommend trying as soon as possible. >> the faster you sign up the faster you will get an appointment. someone who is 16 who signs up today will most likely get an appointment faster than someone who is 16 that signs up next up week. >> reporter: one important thing to note about contra costa residents is these appointments must be made through the county's website or their vaccine phone line. they can't be made through the state's my turn website yet. once you input all your information and you can't immediately schedule an appointment you should hear back with availability within the next few days. also the county says within the next few days they plan on creating some walkup availability at a few of their vaccine sites. one in richmond and one in bay point. possibly more in the coming weeks. reporting live this morning in concord, matt boone, abc 7 news. >> thank you. starting tomorrow the state

city leaders have voted to keep restaurants operating outdoors through the end of the year. this dining program has allowed permitted businesses to operate in specific outdoor space since april of last year. some restaurants say without the outdoor option they would have gone out of business last summer. >> it gave us the lifeboat we needed at a time when we were looking at no revenue at all. in the world of paying rent on time, that's really not a good forecast. >> council members voted unanimously to extend the al fresco initiative through december. graduations are just around the corner and the state has released new guidelines for in- person ceremonies. contactless options for students receiving their awards and diplomas and at least two hours have to pass between multiple ceremonies to help prevent mixing across groups. social distancing measures like six feet between students while

they're seated or standing in line to walk across that stage. and here's the tough one. rules against handshaking, hugging and cap throwing. two u.s. capitol police officers are suing former president trump over the january 6th insurrection. say trump should be held responsible for inciting the crowd. the lawsuit claims one of the officers was crushed against the doors of the capitol and sprayed with chemicals. the other slammed against a stone column and now suffers from depression. each officer seeking at least $75,000 in damages. new this morning a rising star in the republican party is facing alarming allegations this morning. florida congressman matt gaetz is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a teenager. jobina, we know these allegations just came out overnight and the congressman is already denying them. >> yes. the congressman is saying this is part of an extortion plot. abc news has confirmed the justice department is

investigating claims that congressman gaetz had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. it's also looking into whether he violated federal sex trafficking laws by paying for her to travel with him. the investigation was first reported in the new york times. sources told the newspaper the probe was opened in the final months of the trump administration enis part of a larger sex trafficking probe into a political ally of his. gaetz says he's being targeted by a former justice department official. >> on march 16th my father got a text message demanding a meeting wherein a person demanded $25 million in exchange for making horrible sex trafficking allegations against me go away. >> the former justice department official denied the extortion claim. gaetz has not been charged with any crimes. back to you. >> thank you. today president biden is heading to pittsburgh to unveil more about his $3 trillion infrastructure plan. there are two phases of it.

new surveillance video shows an arsonist setting a fire. this happened on march 13th. the owner says he was just about to reopen after being shut down for a year because of the pandemic. that fire destroyed the shop. police are investigating. they don't have anyone arrested. a gofundme page has been set up to help the owner. the target in san francisco on ocean avenue and the target on stevens creek boulevard in cupertino. they will both be closing on

outdoor dining couldn't be much better. still in the 80s through about 6:00. still near 70 around the bay. 60 at the coast at 8:00. mid40s to mid50s tonight. warmer inland. the cool weather starts to gather along the coast. we'll get rid of the 80s by friday. then we're back into the 50s, 60s and 70s for easter. which is close to where we should be. slight chance of rain monday and tuesday. we'll talk about that after we get through this record warmth. bts says despite the popularity, members are dealing with racist remarks. the group put out a tweet calling for an end to racism against asians. they say they've been called expletives and mocked for their looks. the band's statement comes during a movement to stop asian hate after attacks against asian americans in the u.s. and here in the bay area. britney spears speaking about the hulu documentary.
