of the bay areas largest school district. good evening and thank you for joining us. >> tens of thousands of students in fremont unified school district will remain at home during distance learning for the rest of the school year. the district could not reach an agreement for teachers to return to class. abc7news reporter cornell bernard says many parents are frustrated and upset they a planning to protest the move. >> reporter: fremont parent protested outside the office demanding their schools be back in school for in person learning and many thought it was a matter of days before that would happen. >> i don't know who is to blame but my son is not in school. i am just desperate. >> in surprise announcement the fremont unified school district says it would remain under distance learning for the rest of the school year. this parent could not believe. >> it my child has been home over a year. they need to go back to their

normal life. >> with 40 days left in the school year the teachers have an agreement with the union about returning to class. >> we recognize that is not the outcome that community was desiring. >> a return to the classroom the superintendent says should involve all students that want to go back. >> the district believes that return to campus should be comprehensive for all of our students. >> the teacher's union says the proposal was not part of the original agreement. >> it under cut the work unfortunately that we had been doing for so long bringing back our youngest students. and we still feel overall that it would be in the best interest for everyone to make that happen for our youngest learners. >> without an agreement the district says they would miss out on nine million dollars in additional state funding. >> the district is going to lose $10 million. >> other districts like oakland

factor limiting the city's vaccination effort. and this is something to keep in mind. officials in santa clara county are concerned about an alarming rise in variants that could threaten the progress against covid. every variant has been detected. the stanford clinical lab is confirming a case of a new india variant this week. health officer. dr. cody says the proportion of cases linked to more transmittable variants are climbing and people must be vigilant. >> keep wearing your mask and delay your travel. don't indoor dine. don't go to indoor bars. don't host an indoor gathering at your home. even if it is allowed under the state rules don't do it. it is not safe. not yet. >> county officials are also worried about low vaccine supply as eligibility expands. governor newsom says it is too early for californians to

>> others have committed to be vaccinated. i don't need to be vaccinated. >> vaccine maker pfizer will seek out full fda approval which some hope that may sway those that are reluctant. moving on now. a lawsuit filed by san francisco school board member allison collins took everyone by surprise including her own colleagues also being sued. collins says her first amendment rights were violated after she received a vote of no confidence for posting derogatory remarks against asian americans. we have more on this an lee ann, the unintended consequences of this lawsuit. >> as we know the school board has made a few controversial decisions and now this lawsuit. people are asking who would want to be superintendent of this district number one. number two recruiting families in the public schools have been hard. very hard. this makes it more difficult

and unlikely that san francisco voters will be willing to pass another bond measure or parcel tax to support schools in san francisco. >> school board commissioner allison collins has set a price. $87 million as punishment for allegedly having her first amendment rights violated. >> this is an embarrassment and my hope is that it is one thing to sue in everywhere but you are going to sue for some money like i just, you know, that is something that a member of the school board who voters elected should never have the ability to do. >> collins is suing five of her fellow school board members and the district after they voted to strip her of her position as vice president. she was also taken off her committees. the decision was made after it was revealed that collins posted a series of offensive tweets in 2016 before she was a board member. at the time, collins was responding to a group of asian

american kids that were harassing a latino student. >> it is wrong to cancel allison collins for a treat she made and speaking of her own lived experience of racism and discrimination. >> collins has apologized for her tweets but refuses to step down. >> i invite you to join me in making this moment count. to not let me or anyone else be swept under the rug. canceled or dismissed. for speaking truth. >> state senator scott weaner says she was a self-absorbed politician tweeting if allison collins even valley cares about educating san francisco kids she will stop suing the school district and her colleagues and instead resign. this school board has gained national notoriety for a series of controversial decisions like attempting to take down historic murals. proposing to rename schools and changing the merit-based

help is a very part of building a better bay and there's disturbing numbers that say traffic pollution is hurting some neighborhoods more than other and it is leading to racial disparity. >> access to sensors have disturbing date on air pollution in the bay. >> 2500 lives were lost and 5200 children developed new cases of asthma every year due to this traffic pollution. >> new research by the environmental defense fund in george washington university points out the impact is greatest in communities of color. they use oakland as example. this map shows that highest percentage of new childhood cases is in west and downtown oakland. majority of people of color. by comparison the series is lower in the oakland hills that is a majority of white.

there is no doubt california is in critically dry year. 64% of the state is in severe drought and here where are with temperatures blazing. >> a couple years ago we were in good shape rain wise and a couple of years go by and we are in trouble. >> a dry spell ahead and the job is likely to get worse because we don't see any rain for a while. it is quite warm today. here is a look at alike view from the camera as we look at temperatures. 75 in san francisco. cooling down near the coast because onshore flow has returned. we have fog returning to the coast and still warm inland and in the bay. 82 in san jose and emeryville in the city. 81 degrees in nevada and santa rosa and napa 83. 88 in fairfield. almost hitting 90 today.

san ramon hit 90s. concord and livermore. 84. once we get the official highs today we will know if we hit any records. we came close. fog developing in the coast and bay. cooler pattern tomorrow and average temperatures and dry conditions will prevail through easter weekend that is good news. let's travel out to the coliseum and oakland where the a's open the season against the astros. game time 7:07. and it will be sunny skies, about 73 degrees as the game kicks off. great baseball weather. here is the forecast for overnight. notice how the fog surges to the coastline and across the bay. early tomorrow morning commuters may face some spots of fog. but it will be sunny day once the sun is out and some of the fog burns back to the coastline. it will linger at the coast. overnight lows in the mid to upper 40s. milder in some further inland spots like antioch that will have a low of 52 degrees.

tomorrow, look for highs ranging from 62 at half-moon bay to 72 at oakland and 75 in fremont. inland east bay no upper 80s. 81 in the warmest spots in the south bay. san jose up north. 77 at santa rosa. as we look at our forecast animation. monday morning, notice next week will be unsettled because there will be weak disturbances moving generally in the direction but not hold up and so we may not get any rain but it iworth mentioning and keeping in mind that those little weak disturbances headed our way so there can be a sprinkle at some point next week and this weekend is looking gorgeous. mainly sunny and dry. mild. high temperatures near 70s inland and upper 60s in the way for easter and breezy with a mix of sun and clouds. continued mix of sun and clouds on tuesday. the winds will relax and we get a few more clouds coming in wednesday and thursday and at the moment we are not calling for rain next week.

tonight, the deadly mass shooting at an office complex and what authorities have just revealed. they say the suspect locked the gates to keep people from getting out. the horror unfolding on a bystander's livestream. at least four people killed, including a 9-year-old boy who police believe died in his mother's arms. the gunman reportedly locking those gates with bike locks before opening fire into the windows with a semiautomatic weapon. and what we're now learning about the 44-year-old suspect and any relationship to the victims. the derek chauvin trial and the death of george floyd. tonight, the paramedics now taking the stand. one of them saying when he arrived on scene and got closer, "i thought he was dead." and what we heard from george floyd's girlfriend about their struggle with opioids.
