about being able to go to an indoor church service for the first time in more than a year. building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. will begin tonight with another new and brutal attack on asian americans. good evening, think of a joining us, i didn't actually pay >> and i.d. online. this has been particularly challenging in oakland, after i reported on a horrific home break-in where a mother and father were tied up in front of a seven-year-old daughter, new videos coming to light involving seniors and their son who jumped in to save them. i press the oakland police chief for answers today in a story you will see only on abc 7. >> reporter: dramatic video shows the moments couple in their 70s are attacked and robbed on their front porch monday afternoon. the couple's son, hearing his mother screaming runs out barefoot, wielding a machete and scares the four robbers away, who went to a nearby getaway vehicle. this case happened just one day before

were tied up, attacked and robbed of much of their life savings, less than two minutes away. the seven-year-old daughter, home at the time, witnessed it all. >> i was scared they would come back, though. i don't want them to come back. >> reporter: during a time when many attacks on asian americans are coming to light, these victims tell me they are losing confidence in oakland police. especially after a store owner in chinatown was arrested after firing his weapon to stop a robbery in progress. i attended a press conference held by police friday afternoon, where they announced the formation of a new violent crimes operation center, to address the 230% increase in homicides this year. here is what i asked police chief laurent armstrong about concerns ghs beindo. me and if you ha lost m faith inanpolike they havestfaith in you. a specificallyto the families that are hurting?

>> the message is clear to me that i have been very clear from the beginning. i want to reduce crime in the city of oakland. that with limited resources, i have to use those resources as efficient and effective as i can. i understand their impatience, but these investigations take time, they take time identifying those who are responsible for it, but we will do our due diligence and we ask people share information, share video, bring that video forward. >> i presented steve armstrong's response incidents of this week. one said to me this was still not an acceptable answer. of course, it is a story we will stay on top of. hundreds of people just marched through oakland in solidarity with the asian- american and pacific islander community. this stop asian hate rally was organized by two juniors from berkeley high school. they said they wanted to uplift the community and push for change. >> i think if in school we would learn more about people

of color and their history, and how we can all unite together, then i think there would be less violence, and less stereotypes, and less ignorance. >> the crowd met up at oakland city hall this afternoon. they marched chinatown before ending at the lake merritt amphitheater. oakland's police chief outlined the strategies his department is now using to reduce violent crime in the city. chief armstrong says he created the violent crime operations center to focus on all of this. it will target shootings, homicides, and all violent crimes around the city. armstrong says he's diverted resources from other areas within the department to help support this new center. it's been a rough you're already in oakland, the city has had 34 homicides to date, the 230% increase over the same time last year. easter weekend crowds are expected at lake merritt were nearby residents have been complaining to the city about being overwhelmed by trash and noise and block streets.

abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley shows how the city is planning to enforce the rules of this holiday weekend. >> reporter: lake merritt is often touted as oakland's crown jewel. during the pandemic, it's become particularly crowded on weekends. >> i like the energy and activity, and multicultural, and everybody in oakland using the lake. but on the other hand, out of hand. people can't self regulate, so there is trash everywhere, the parking is crazy, they're driving on the sidewalks and the median. it's overly crazy. >> reporter: triple parked cars have blocked emergency vehicles. nearby churches say live music is interrupting outdoor services. this week, the oakland city council decided to beef up enforcement to make sure rules are followed around the lake. >> every week, we are really trying to maintain order, and start always with education.

start with communication, enforcement is the last resort, and it will be resorted to when necessary. >> reporter: last year, park ambassadors were deployed to remind people to wear a mask and socially distance. this time around, this weekend, those ambassadors will be out to tell people to pick up trash, and keep noise levels down. >> i think it's a mistake to crack down in any way. >> reporter: some lake merritt residents revel in the joyous crowds. others welcome intervention. >> it has been very lively, but still a nice place to be. for sure, the trash has been building up. >> reporter: it's a balancing act for the city to maintain stability and safety, but also support local vendors and families looking for a place to hang out. in oakland, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news.

>> starting april 15th, concerts and other large indoor events will be allowed again in california. as long as the county is not in the purple tear. all of this means fans could be allowed in at games as well. the capacity, that will depend on the venue and county tier. guests will need to show they have been tested for covid within 24 hours of the event or been vaccinated. for the warriors and sharks, the approval from local public health officials. to a major change about traveling. the cdc says people who are fully vaccinated against covid- 19 can do so as long as they wear masks in public. federal health officials had urged people not to travel at all, unless it was absolutely necessary. the cdc says that recommendations still applies. >> while we believe fully vaccinated people can travel at low risk to themselves, cdc is not recommending travel at this time, due to the rising number of cases. >> even so, some of the busiest travel days since the pandemic began were recorded

last three weeks. san francisco international airport has certainly seen an uptick in travelers there. that is quite a change from this time last year, as abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman shows us in this report. >> reporter: if you feel like dancing, you would not have been alone at sfo today. dancing carefully? you had company. >> coronavirus scares me. >> but you are traveling. >> and he to see my daughter, i would only do it for her. >> reporter: why would people to fight the centers for disease control recommendations on this good friday before easter? >> i'm going home to minneapolis. >> i miss my girlfriend. >> my mom's 84th birthday. >> reporter: hence, all the people in a hurry when sfo protected record crowds for the pandemic. that pandemic part is a qualifier. numbers tell a story. all three bay area were airports report numbers roughly 30% of normal. today at sfo, they expect 25,000 travelers. on this day, a year ago, this is what 3200 looked like back

resurrection of jesus christ. resurrection, a word that embodies a return to glory. this weekend will hold a special meeting, as it will be the first time many will return to in person, and/or easter service since 2019. >> this'll be the first time we have been inside a church since covid started, and the ceremony, the passion of christ at easter time is the most important thing in the catholic faith. it's really emotional. >> reporter: suzie suh is narrow, along with 150 other members of the st. martin of tours catholic church began their easter weekend with a good friday mass. the church has limited in their capacity to 25% and made the required changes to allow for safe st sll considered a blessi. >> it's great. i love going to church, and i love god.

a partnership is seeking to make the bart system safer for women. abc 7 news was that the west oakland bart station not one more girl campaign was announced. it is looking to put an end to sexual harassment and violence. a coalition of advocacy groups worked with bart to come up with several solutions that include changing bart's code of conduct for writers and the crime reporting system. >> we sea system that only servicemen, or we can face a challenging task of taking it on, head-on and addressing this issue to ensure those most impacted can ride safely. >> riders will see

station as part of the campaign. san francisco is following through with its commitment to expand efforts to vaccinate seniors in chinatown. the city has a mobile vaccination team design for underserved neighborhoods. today, the team was in chinatown for the first time. city officials say more than 100 seniors registered for today's covid-19 vaccination clinic. >> patients have their own reasons, even if they want to get the vaccine, they can't. they may have fears, mobility issues, and so, because of that, this event as supervisor has said, if you can't come to us, we will bring it to you. >> the mobile vaccination unit will be back next friday to deliver more shots. health officials are hoping to vaccinate 1000 people living in chinatown's senior living facilities. now that millions of people are being vaccinated against covid-19, many are wondering what you should do with your vaccination card, something think laminating it is a good idea. as dani romero found out, that may not be the best solution. >> it's pretty thick, thicker than a business card. >> reporter: ft.

caroline mutombo is talking about is hurt card after she was vaccinated. >> probably going to put in my wallet. >> reporter: some publicity about preserving vaccination cards by laminating them. but should you? >> put the original in a safe place, but take a picture of this and maybe eliminate that picture. let's save the original in case there's a question about it. >> reporter: what up later on you need a booster shot and you already eliminated your card? >> if you limit your card and eat it later, there's a booster shot or some other similar vaccine that would be given, you would have to download a new card off the state website. >> reporter: what you should not do is post a picture of your card on social media. >> so your sticker you been vaccinated but do not post that, because so many of those cards up personal information, it might have your birthdate, we don't want anyone

talk about a nailbiter in san antonio. the top-seeded stanford women's basketball team is going to the national championship game. they just beat the university of south carolina final four. that means stanford will play the winner of arizona and yukon. earlier today, stanford head coach kara vanderveer was named women's college basketball coach of the year. shifting gears, and a look at this massive fire in solano county.

skype 7 flew over flames just before 11:00 a.m. today. the battalion chief told us this was a controlled burn at grizzly island, and there are multiple fires. the thick, black smoke, as you can see, could be viewed miles away. for several hours after the fire started. certainly a time, even though we are enjoying the sunshine, we could use that rain. >> things are awfully dry out there, at least a controlled burn is probably a good idea to keep out later this year. we are running out of time to get rain. >> the so-called rainy season which hasn't given us much rain is about to end. we are moving it into one of our driest parts of the year, and for the seven days ahead,

it will remain dry. if you think about getting out of town, here's a look at the travel forecast for tomorrow. bay area airports, sunny skies. after early morning fog, light breeze tomorrow. high temperatures ranging from low 60s to upper 60s. as we look at other locations, honolulu, scattered showers, a high of 79. chicago will be warmer than new york, with a high of 67, and los angeles, the warmest of all, high of 75, let's take a look at our current conditions. 24-hour temperature change is stunning. 24 degrees cooler in san francisco right now than at this time yesterday. 20 degrees cooler in oakland. 90 degrees cooler in hayward. it has been a sharp cooldown the last 24 hours. here is a view of a few clouds off in the distance, looking west from emeryville. 54 degrees in san francisco. this time yesterday, it was 78. mid 60s in san jose, 72 in morgan hill. 52 at half moon bay. a few wispy clouds off in the distance as we look towards the north, northeast. 66 degrees in santa rosa and in napa. novato, upper 70s at fairfield, and concord at 75. here is the view from our rooftop camera, looking across the calm embarcadero.

this is the cooling trend that has kicked in today, continues tomorrow. easter sunday, we expected average rain and temperatures for this time of year. there will be gradual warming beginning next week, but no rain in sight. overnight, this is what we can expect. a surge of coastal fog up to the coast and out over the bay locally. probably a deeper marine layer that we had last night, which may mean more cooling than we had last night. in the daytime, once we get to midmorning or so, skies will be mainly sunny. overnight low temperatures, generally in the mid to upper 40s tonight. up in the north bay, chillier with lows dropping into and then tomorrow, we can expect some lingering patches of fog near the coast, breezy there, and cool on the coast with highs tomorrow only in the mid- 50s, even around the bay shoreline, a relatively cool

day with highs in the low to mid to 60s. san mateo and the inland areas wiup 70 have couple light impulses coming our way, but not delivering any rain. here is the accuweather seven- day forecast. i talked about a bit of a warming trend that will begin on monday, look at tuesday and wednesday. mid-70s, up to around 70 on the shoreline, pleasant, comfortably mild. there will be some minor cooling with increasing clouds late in the week. nice seven days ahead. >> certainly an enjoyable one.

or from sheltering at home. >> the prophet we make each sale, we either turn around and bite extra produce from the farmers and we donate them to the shelters, the care homes, the front-line are spread >> reporter: stanford i.t. manager maria gregorio mobilized an army of high school students, including two sons, who take orders, start produce and handle the pickup. several of the farms are women- owned, promoting healthier eating. >> a lot of times, the donated food can be canned foods or pantry goods that are just not fresh, but getting fresh produce, especially organic produce is probably very helpful. >> reporter: with demand in need showing no signs of slowing, the program will continue. pickups are in paulo alto and will be happening more frequently in sync with the growing season. to learn the produce is available and how to order, go to giving fruits.org. david louis, abc 7 news. >> make it easier to get that access, so important. >> that is great, they've done a great job.
