i'm not sure if there's anything i can say to my family members to convince them to take the covid-19 vaccine. i'm not even sure if i'm convinced. hi darius, i think that people respond more to what we do than what we say. so after looking at all the data and the science about these vaccines, i got the vaccine. and i made sure my mom and dad got the vaccine. because these vaccines are safe. ♪ ♪

building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 ne. last easter was the first holiday we saw altered by the pandemic. things looked different this year, but there are signs of how different it looks from 2020. messages of hope on this easter sunday is the bay area reflects on a difficult year and looks forward. many spent the holiday at worship services or enjoying the day outside with family and friends. here is abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard. >> reporter: easter mouse on the green outside st. ignatius

last march thanks to the move into the orange tear. the oakland church was able to hold easter services this morning. the congregation wear masks and so did the bishop, but as you can see, church members not in the same househol sit .on,ster tradition continued. volunteers handed out gifts and provided -- to people at the first church. it all started with tenderloin tessie who showed that no matter who you were, there was someone who cared. he has since passed away but the giveaway continues and this year, the volunteers also handed out ppe and clothing. in his traditional address, pope francis urged people to not lose hope as the pandemic persists. the pope denounced armed conflicts during the pandemic as scandalous. he said vaccines are an

essential tool to fight covid- 19 and called for them to be shared with the world's poorest countries. do to safety precautions, just 200 people attended the mass at st. peter's basilica compared to the usual 10,000. a stop asian hate rally outside san francisco's city hall also included self dispense martial arts demonstrations. instructors showed off combat drills and techniques to fight back against an attack. rally participants wanted to send a clear message that the asian american community is strong. speakers today say crimes are beyond alarming. >> i have never come in 53 years that i have been in this country, longer than you were born, many of you, that i feel a sense of danger that i feel now. the danger for my own personal safety, the danger for safety if you look asian. >> she says she is calling on the biden administration to fight the racism targeting

asian americans. on tuesday, the san francisco school board could reverse its decision to rename 44 schools. back in january, you will remember, they voted to move forward with changing the names of any school associated with slavery, colonization and other forms of racial oppression. there was backlash as people pointed out the historical inaccuracies with some of the interpretations. others wondered why the board wasn't addressing reopening schools for in person learning. part of building a better bay area is fighting for racial and social justice. while we do not have all the answers, we do have an awful lot of resources. you can find out more on how you can take action and be an ally over at abc7news.com /take action. the first weekend of street closures to keep crowds away from oakland's lake merritt appear to be working. this is the scene along lakeshore avenue. traffic cones are up to keep

visitors from parking along the lake. large crowds took part or turned parts of the shoreline into a noisy and unsafe atmosphere. visitors appreciated the calmer vibe. >> it is a meeting place so everybody can get together and have fun. it doesn't cost you anything. >> these measures will be in place every weekend through november. kamala harris is returning to her hometown of oakland for the first time becoming vice president she is scheduled to talk about various topics during her trip including water infrastructure and small business. no details have been released about her event just yet. she was born in oakland and kicked off her presidential campaign in january 2019. she began her career as a prosecutor in the alameda county district attorney's office.

contaminated with the ingredients used in astrazeneca's vaccine. the mistake was caught and none of the doses were shipped. the plan was developed by astrazeneca and they are looking for another location for production. however, it's vaccine has not yet received authorization in the u.s. johnson & johnson says it should be able to make up for the lost doses in a few weeks. the cdc says it was safe for fully vaccinated americans to travel. apparently, millions are taking advantage of the new guidelines. however, health experts are worried governs over the holiday weekend could lead to another surge. alvin lopez tells us, when it comes to vaccinations, the country set a record on saturday. >> reporter: as millions of americans gather with family, health officials are expressing concern. >> if you have unvaccinated people mingling, i do worry about another surge. that is what we have seen after every holiday. if he coulhold , we woulbe in u
