will try to get answers for you. there has been a lot of talk about a possible fourth surge of covid-19 in the country. california may be able to avoid that. abc 7 news reporter stephanie sierra is here to explain, stephanie, why we may be able to dodge the bullet. >> reporter: public health officials are cautiously optimistic the bay area won't be facing a fourth wave. and let's hope that's the case but as experts pointed out today, nothing is off the table when we have a report number of covid variants circulating the state. as covid cases surge in many parts of the midwest and east coast. the bay area is in good shape. but good enough to avoid a fourth wave? or is that still possible? >> i think it's a distant possibility. but i really doubt it. >> reporter: dr. george wetherige says it all comes back to the rate of transmission. every bay area county is reporting case rate per 100,000 people.

by slight increase we're talking less than 1% over the past week. only napa and solano counties reached above that with more than 2%. >> 2 is like almost nothing. some of these midwestern counties was 56% at some points. >> reporter: most of the bay area's case rates have stabilized. >> we've seen high complaints with the rules and regulations. >> reporter: with the record number of covid variants we're not immune of another wave. >> if we were to see a fourth wave when do you anticipate that happening. >> if it were to happen it would happen sooner rather than later. >> reporter: soon two weeks. it's all about the pace of vaccinations. right now it's all about waiting for the next batch of doses. >> there's2,500 cases a day in california but we want it to be at zero. >> reporter: the only way to get to zero as dr. monica gande explains is herd immunity. >> you reach a certain

population that is is is is is and you keep prudent and you will see a reduction. >> reporter: dr. rutherford says we will be close to herd immunity once vaccination rate. >> stephanie thank you. emery police are investigating the assault of an asian man. police say a suspect approached the victim and his wife and threw a punch unprovoked. the suspect's punch missed. he then ran off but was caught and arrested. the couple was of cours shaken up but not injured thankfully. the suspect could face attempted assault and elder

abuse charges. a group called united collaborative have been out on the streets to patrol. the volunteers are trained by professional security guards to deescalate potentially violent situations. watch for suspicious activity and quickly contact authorities. >> asians are stressed out, they're in despair. they're wondering why the country they love doesn't love them back. >> we're all minding our own business. we're not going out there to hurt anybody. so we don't understand why people are trying to hurt us. >> reporter: the collaborative says their volunteers include military veterans and civilians. hate crimes directed toward asians have certainly caused high stress areas for asian-american and pacific islander community. >> reporter: at a rally, one voice can be heard above the cries. >> i'm sick and tired and angry

the family of an unarmed homicide suspect shot and killed by san jose police officers filed a lawsuit today against the department and the city. 3 officers fired multiple rounds killing 27-year-old david tovar jr. as he ran along a second floor apartment walk way on mckey road on january 21st. the family wants justice. >> he never looked at thos offices. never brandished a weapon at anyone. never made any threatening statements whatsoever. >> nobody has to go through what i have to go through. ever. to lose your baby. it was like the worse thing in the world. >> bob: the

gusty. you will want to grab a jacket. those winds mainly coastal event 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. so breezy there. and then you will notice the winds pick back up for the afternoon hours tomorrow at noontime. about 30-mile an hour wind. 35, 30 to 32-mile an hour winds for the evening. so we're in this breezy pattern. spring is that time of year when we do experience this. from our san jose camera we're also seeing plenty of sun. temperatures 53 in san francisco. 57 in oakland. upper 50s around san jose. 52 degrees in half-moon bay. most areas have been in the 50s and 60s today. here's the view exploritorium camera nothing but blue skies. one other live picture. bright skies as we head into tomorrow. it is really going to be a nice day. breezy and a little milder so if it's too cold for you today just wait until tomorrow. much warmer pattern setting up

for the weekend. above average temp temperatures are expected next week. this limited low cloudiness that we have on doppler 7 tonight will be expanding as we head toward tomorrow morning. but not a lot. it's just going to be parts of the bay area with some higher clouds as well at 7:00 a.m. then it thins out, clears out. we're going to be seeing plenty of sun as i mentioned. tomorrow morning, temperatures will be in the upper 30s to the upper 40s. we will have fewer clouds in the north bay. more cloud cover along the coast and for the southern end of our viewing area. low 70s for gillroy morgan hill. on the peninsula you're looking at mid-60s to palo alto. breezy at the coast. 60 degrees in downtown san francisco. 61 in south city. north bay temperatures 68 in san rafael. low 70s pleasant in santa rosa, napa, vallejo.
