mandate will stay around and what will happen when the state does open up. >> governor newsom is making it clear. >> e we don't have any short term goals when the mandate is lifted. >> reporter: but when the mandate is lifted should you go out? will you? should you. it will be some time until we have an option. >> i think well into next year, it'll be appropriate for people to wear a mask. >> reporter: californians have been required to mask june 2020. the ongoing mask mandate will keep residents from a true return to a prepandemic normal. until a significant pandemic of americans are immunized it'll

be important to keep social distancing. i posted a poll on twitter asking people if they will continue to wear a mask past the pandemic. there are places like public transit and times during winter months and allergy season that they just make sense. erica shares i loathe mask. i'm partially deaf, not only do masks make people's voice muffled but i need to read ad a lips. other than avoiding crowded areas. as of tonight, almost the entire area is in orange. there is one area that is stuck in the

solano county. in fact, it was in risk of going in the purple tier. >> the bay area region has demonstrated a higher degree of willingness to comply with social distancing and with masking. they have a higher degree of vaccination for example. >> also the majority of cases in solano county are among young people who have lower hospitalization and death rates but still spread the virus. they're hoping the widening availability of vaccines could help bring the county into the orange tier very soon. >> california's top epidemiologists are cautiously optimistic the bay area will avoid a fourth wave. but the next two weeks are critical in stopping the slow rising cases. in most regions that rise is a fraction of a percent. only napa and solano county saw transmission rate of 2%. >> there's a fair amount. there's 2,500 cases a day in

california. but we want it to be at 0. >> experts say the next two weeks are critical as the state is between vaccine shipments. they're hoping more vaccines and the easing of eligibility restrictions will help the state move ahead. and there's a symptom known as covid brain fog. experts say that's just scratching the surface when it comes to some of the problems they're seeing. >> people are having crushing headaches, people are having cognitive symptoms. >> dr. joanna helmue is describing some of what are called long haul symptoms or lasting symptoms that covid patients are dealing with. >> i've had

patients that have lingering covid symptoms. >> reporter: including anxiety, mood disorders and even strokes. her patients have several other lasting symptoms too. >> headache disorders are very common in people. new dizziness, vertigo, ringing in their ears. people are passing out. >> reporter: dr. grace lee says covid precautions and vaccines are just as important due to these long haul threats. >> the long haul covid can impact people. it's really going to be the young adults who get it. >> reporter: dr. helmue says some of her patients are teen. online many covid survivors described daily headaches and vertigo. crystal says she's getting the vaccines due to her concerns over these lingering side

effects. >> i had a developed cognitive symptoms who still has them. >> reporter: they're working to find the cause of lingering symptoms so that they can help those people. j.r. stone, abc 7 news. we've been hearing a lot about variants and whether vaccines are effective against them. duke university in north carolina has been looking into it and in a study released today, found that moderna's vaccine works against what's known as the california variant. the novavax vaccine also did well. has not been authorized for use in the united states however. researchers did not test pfizer's vaccine. the vaccine roll out in the bay area raised concerns about equity when some of the communities with the highest infection rates were having trouble getting the vaccines. one group that was seemingly invisible throughout is home bound seniors who were able to

go out to those vaccination sites. forgotten no more, a vaccinate program got under way in the peninsula. david louis shows us how nurses are making those elderly cry tears of joy. >> reporter: this team is on a mission. they're going out with a vile of vaccines to go out to inoculate seniors who are the most in need. >> these are people who have is not been able to get vaccines yet. and they're very vulnerable because that's why they're home and home bound. >> reporter: the six patients to be visited range in age from 85 to 99. they were identified by programs such as meals on wheels who recognize their isolation. home visits go much slower than a mass vaccination event. >> given it to have pfizer has that six hour window we need to
