. this is abc7 news. >> we wanted to ensure there's equal access and, in fact, priority access given to these communities. >> we are less than a week away from california opening up vaccine eligibility to everybody 16 and older but there are still serious concerns about making sure the hardest hit communities have access. san francisco is tackling the issue by allowing seven neighborhoods early access starting now. good morning everybody. it's start, april 10th. thank you for joining us. we will have much more on which neighborhoods can start making appointments in just a moment. first let's start with a quick look at the weather. >> good morning to you. we had a little wit of fog. the weekend is going to bring

warmer weather. starting today as high pressure builds in slightly to the bay area. fog is patchy, temperatures are slightly cooler with not total cloud cover. we will see the west winds return to the shoreline. we will be breezy there. no changes at the coast. right now it's in the upper 40's, fremont and heyward 37 in santa rosa. certainly the cold spots, a look out toward the east bay where at 9:00 we will be in the 40's and 50's. low to mid-60s's for the bay and inland communities. we stay cool in the upper 50's at the beaches, upper 60's around the bay and the low to mid-70s. we will detail the weekend forecast for the rest of you coming up. >> thank you. in just five days california is expanding vaccinations for everybody 16 and older. the city of san francisco is getting ahead of the state and starting to vaccinate that population already. you need to live in one of

seven neighborhoods that the city has chosen. what the city based their decision on for this expansion. >> 46% of san francisco has been vaccinated but as the april 15th date approaches, when everybody in the state 16 and overruled qualifies to get vaccinated, san francisco wanted to give seven neighborhoods a head start. >> we wanted to ensure there's equal access and, in fact, priority access. >> under list the e e neighborhoods. san francisco's department of public health, deputy director said they know there will be a big rush on thursday and didn't necessarily have to wait on the state. >> the state of california has provided discretion to those providers serving high impact areas on who to vaccinate. >> several weeks ago a letter

with 20 legislators was signed urging state officials to change the strategy. they are glad san francisco is getting a head start and that the state is listening. >> since then the governor has committed almost $8 million to the bay area to increase vaccination access. >> 152 people were vaccinated at this community hub. they are glad the city made the expansion but said there's a big need for more community hubs like this one. >> because with these particular sites you can have that conversation. you can answer the questions. >> and supply is what's concerning san francisco's dph. this week they received 16,000 doses of the vaccine. next week that will go down to 10,000. >> with in the next, you know, ten to 14 days the hope is there will be enough vaccine. >> if you live in one of these neighborhoods you can go to san francisco general or southeast health center from 9:00 a.m.

to 3:00 p.m. and get vaccinated. if you are 16 you will need to go with a parent or guor in san francisco. abc7 news. and berkeley also announced first dose appointments are available for berkeley or alameda residents who are at least 16. california is warning of another vaccine supply shortage in the coming weeks. next week's delivery will be short 15%. california will only get 2 million doses. another 5% drop is expected the week after next. health care providers say the news is disappoints because they have been told it would only grow, not shrink. >> disappointing because we have been told for many months that don't worry, by mid-april you will have as much as you need and that's not the case. >> 8 million have not yet received their first shot.

on the peninsula, facebook is converting part of its head quarters in to a vaccination clinic for under served communities. they the goal is to vaccinate 5,000 people who live or work in the communities of east palo alto and north fair oaks and bellhaven. facebook also plans to offer transportation. >> it's a good way of demonstrating that all people are valuable and facebook sees that and believes in it and is put a lot of effort. >> appointment must be made through ravenswood. a free rotating vaccination pop up event makes its way into alameda. it's giving out shots at the bay fair bart station in san leandro from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. its part of their goal to provide vaccines in under

meantime in the south bay keeping cars away after coronavirus. that is the goal for a group of restaurant owners along san pedro street in downtown san jose. owners are asking city leaders to consider making the popular stretch car free permanently. >> it could be some time before visitors catch another vehicle along this stretch of san pedro street in downtown san jose. restaurant owners pushing the city to pump the brakes on car traffic so businesses can continue outdoor service in the street permanently post pandemic. >> we don't need to get back to 100%. we need to get back to 150% for many years just to recoup all the losses. >> randy said he and other restaurant owners have done a number of pilot studies over the last few years, finding interests in what he calls an urban feel. >> with a high-rise,

residential, all the corporate and the restaurants. this is what downtown san jose needs. >> before any decision is made the city's department of transportation said there is much to consider. the type of closure that would be most appropriate, impacts to surrounding traffic and more. he said that the idea is still young. >> it would be a significant change to the downtown street network it. would require funding for engineering and we don't have any funding identified in the budget. >> another big issue is around maintaining access to the parking garage. a 1200 space structure in the middle of san pedro. prepandemic it supported large community events. >> when we get back to precoronavirus levels of traffic and business we may see some significant demand on that garage that we would have to deal with. >> traffic issues won't detour business ownerns looking for a more permanent solution. a stable set up that will benefit the downtown core. in san jose, abc7 news.

and san francisco giants fans are thrilled to be able to attend games this season. so are the businesses near oracle park. the scene in south of market looked more like prepandemic times. bars were back open, the giants dug out store was in business and street vendors were out and about. it was a good day for the many people who depend on a depend oo ballpark. >> we are seeing people that -- welcoming each other back. it's good. > fans did not seem to mind the strict protocols to get into the ballpark to see their team play. they had to show a recent negative coronavirus test or proof that they had been vaccinated. >> get to see other humans, excited about the same things you are. >> now we get to appreciate it a little more. >> capacity for games is limited right now to 22% or about 9,000 fans per game. and fans won't be hearing

the staff are vaccinated. it makes me feel confident. >> 11 early education sites will reopen on monday. so will these 22 schools. only prek through 2nd grade. if your child's school isn't on this list it means they will start a week later. by april 26th every student through 5th grade will be on campuses throughout the district. five days a week. >> by the end of april, we will likely have 107 schools open with an estimated 22,000 students returning to in person learning. >> distance learning is still an option for families. middle and high schools will remain closed but are expected to reopen in the fall. we toured bryant elementary in the mission district where the principal said classrooms had to be redesigned. on monday parents will not be allowed inside the schools. instead kids mr. be dropped off. lunches will be served in the classrooms or outside. >> we don't have any doubt

that our schools are ready to open in a safe and caring and loving way. >> in san francisco, abc7 news. in the north bay san marin will play under its field lights for the final time. we reported about ongoing litigation between the school district and neighbors who called for an end to the lights. neighbors claim the lights, which were installed in 2018, created too much light pollution. the mar in ij reported they agreed to use them for one last game. happening tonight the return of a special charity concert put on by dan ashley. you know there has to be some big ticket preformerns there. dan's rock the casa event is virtual this year with chuck level of the rolling stones and kevin of reo speed wagon. it supports all kinds of amazing groups making a difference for young people in

12apps submitted for a competition sponsored by a san jose congresswoman. she came up with improvement over existing apps using voice recognition. >> people don't have the amount of time to press a lot of buttons and it can be confusing. when you are -- using voice recognition all you need to do is say help. >> the user activate itself when potential danger arising, listening for that keyword help. it creates a text alert for police with the user's location. that solves what she considered a weakness in other apps that send messages to friends or family which could delay response. her app is available on the app store for free as a public service. >> it's about power. it's about keeping women from being fully -- who they are. that's why what you are doing is very important. >> she plans to study computer science in college. she is also working on her next app. one that will let diners
