unrest in minnesota after police shot and killed a man during a traffic stop. the events unfolding miles from where derek chauvin is on trial. and a sixth woman coming forward saying the mayor of a north bay town sexually assaulted her. also this morning the youngest san francisco students are heading back to school for the first time in more than a year. a look ahead of what to expect in the classroom. good morning. welcome to monday, april 12th. >> let's start with a look at forecast with meteorologist mike nicco. let's try to get this monday off on a decent note. you can see we have a few clouds along the coast. some are starting to spill into the bay. we will call it clear to partly cloudy this morning. notice the winds coming out of the northwest and they are fairly light right now. let's take a look. some of the clouds hanging over san francisco as we look from the exploratorium.

so the coast 57 to 63 in san francisco. those temperatures pretty close to average. for the rest of us we will be warm than average. mid to upper 70s in the south bay and the north bay. and a few 80s inland. now this will be our warmest day until the weekend when even warmer temperatures are on the way. i'll show you that coming up. back to you. the national guard has been deployed in minnesota amid protests after police shot and killed a black man during a traffic stop. this happened not far from where george floyd was killed. >> donte wright was killed yesterday afternoon at brooklyn center, minnesota. within hours, hundreds of protesters filled the streets. police sea they were trying to first wright after were trying to arrest wright after they determined he had outstanding warrants. his car continued for several

blocks before hitting another car. wright died at the scene and his mother says he called her as he was being pulled over. >> i said why did he get pull the over? he said they pulled me over for air fresheners in the car. >> police and national guard presence is expected to be high over the next few days. minnesota governor tim walz tweet he is praying for pray family. walz will hold a news conference later this morning. back to you. >> thank you. prosecutors in the murder trial of former police officer derek chauvin are expected to wrap up their case this week. chauvin is the officer that knelt on george floyd's neck as he was on the ground. over the last two weeks the jury has heard from medical experts testifying that chauvin's actions were largely to blame for george floyd's

death. but the defense is expected to call many witnesses to argue that floyd's heart and drug issues led to his death. >> they will try to call experts that will talk about the fentanyl in his system. they will have an expert that will say that this could have been considered an overdose. >> before the defense takes the stand, prosecutors will likely call george floyd's loved ones to tell the jury who he was as a person. on receiverrers believe the jury could get the case in a little more than a week. now to covid-19 and the effort to vaccinate californians. nearly half the people in our state have at least one dose. more than a quarter are fully vaccinated. covid-19 case rates in the state have remained steady. the state reports 105 deaths saturday. the number of deaths based on a seven day average are at the lowest since early december. hospitalizations also continue to decline in the state.

anyone 16 and up in alameda county can schedule a vaccine appointment. this comes ahead of the state expanding eligibility to everyone on thursday. contra costa county got an early start on expanding eligibility to those 16 and up a few weeks ago. it is back to school for thousands of students in san francisco today. dozens of sfusd preschools and elementary schools will be reopening for face to face learning. we are live welcoming students back to the classroom this morning. amy. >> reporter: safety will be a huge focus today. students will see that right as they arrive. they will see the red circles showing them where to stand. stay six feet apart. kids will have to complete a health screening at home. teachers have been vaccinated. so lots of changes to make sure everyone is safe. kids will not be eating lunch in the cafeteria.

they will eat in their classroom or outside. that way they can stay with a stable cohort. and the district has arranged for students and teachers covid tested. this is for 22 elementary schools in the district. parents say they are happy for these young children but worried for the older kids. >> totally concerned. i think he is the one that struggled the most with distance learning. the longer he stayed in distance learning the worst it got. >> reporter: the school district hopes to have 22,000 kids back in the classroom by the end of this month. that is not everyone half the kids in the district. san francisco unified school district serves 65,000 students. so those older kids won't be coming back until the fall. they will be celebrating today's openings though. the superintendent will be at one of the elementary schools cheering on teachers and

to his businesses and let them know the community is paying attention and we need him to be held accountable. we need him to resign. >> reporter: the mayor under fire after five women told the chronicle that foppoli sexually assaulted them. the allege incidents took place over 16 years. williams says she was asalt by foppoli in 2016 after a night of drinking and dancing. now a sixth woman is coming forward with claims. windsor council member estor told the press democrat she was drugged and sexually assaulted twice by foppoli in 2020. foppoli denies those claims and says she coerced him.

the mayor released this statement saying in part "now is the appropriate -- the sheriff's department has opened an investigation into the matter. >> victims in this case will be treated with the utmost respect. they have been very courageous and brave in coming forward. >> he does not belong in office. he has no moral credibility to stand on. >> reporter: eight signed this letter calling for dominic to resign. winery co-owner joe foppoli says his brother has been removed from the payroll and should leave his government elected job too. the windsor town council has called an emergency meeting for wednesday at 6:00 to consider demanding mayor foppoli step down. the mayor says he has no intentions of leeing the job.

in windsor, cornell bernard abc 7 news. >> dominic foppoli's interest in politics started at a young age. he became the youngest council member and mayor in the history of windsor. and in 2014 at the age of 32, he was elected to windsor's town council. foppoli was appointed mayor by town council in 2018. he won the seat in an election in 2020. last month foppoli was appointed the newest representative to the golden gate bridge highway and transportation district. and co-owner of christopher creek winery which he started with his family. the bay area has several organizations working to support victims of sexual abuse. to find out more and review a list of the vetted resources, go to abc7news.com/takeaction. it's about 5:09 on this monday. let's take a look at neighborhood temperatures. we will start in the south bay where it's clear and we're mainly in the low to mid 40s.

46 in san jose. lost georgias to up in the hills a little bit milder at 50 degrees. everybody else in the 40s until we get over to novato at 39. you can see fog along the coast and into the north bay. lowest visibility i have seen right now is three miles. here's a look from the exmoratorium where exploratorium where it's 49. we will stay in the mid to upper 40s through 7:00. notice the 50s at the coast where it will be coolest. 63 to 70 add noon for our bay and inland temperatures. cool to comfy. 72 to 79. so above average away from the coast. and back into the mid to upper 60s by 7:00. so pretty nice evening. let's talk about that commute. other than the fog out there. it will be pretty good getting around. we will go good with dry conditions all day and pretty calm. especially compared to tomorrow where the winds will be back into our forecast. but they will bring us cleaner

there has been several incidents recently in the east bay hills. one incident a cyclist was assaulted and had a mountain bike stolen on grizzly peak boulevard and thieves also had a gun. bike clubs are urging you to ride with a friend and let someone know where you are going. >> i wish they would open and put some patrols up here to mitigate some of that. >> bicycles are expensive. and a lot of people are having a hard time right now. and i understand. i just pray and hope i don't get robbed. >> several incidents have occurred on grizzly peak between fish ranch road. others have happened along wildcat canyon. some say the extra rules are only creating a new problem. the strict enforcement comes in response to a rise in

complaints about trash, parking, and noise in the neighborhood. yestrday officers enforced the rules on just one side of the park so that naturally push everyone including food vendors to the north side. residents say people were forced to squeeze together, raising concerns about social distancing. >> they have the whole other side blocked off because there is too many people. but all it's doing is make it a smaller space with the same amount of people. >> abc 7 reached out to oakland police and city leaders to get their take on these park issues but they have not yet responded. they may be small but they are mighty. tiny terriers jumped into action after discovering a much larger intruder. so it captured everything. you can see clearly this bear walking across the deck and going inside this pasadena home because the door was open. okay. so it sniffs around the kitchen

followed. good ventilation is considered a key in preventing the spread of covid-19 in buildings. this morning concerns on the caribbean island of saint vincent. the island is bracing for more eruptions. >> reporter: thousands of people are expected to evacuate st. vincent. at least three cruise ships are ready to serve as emergeny shelters. the eruption pumped clouds of ash six miles into the air. >> when i walk the streets, my feet is sinking inches into the ash. i was broken. i cried. i can't believe this is my beautiful home. >> reporter: people on the island and neighboring islands are being asked to stay inside or wear a mask if venturing outside. scientists say the eruptions could last several more days.

thickest fog this morning. everybody else in the 40s. until you get to alameda and brentwood at 50 right now. here's a look at peninsula where enjoy the calmness right now. it will get windy starting tonight. it will stay pretty breezy for a couple of days. you only have a southwest wind at 5 miles per hour. even with the cloud cover out there. that is leaking in from the coast. mid to upper 40s. 50s at the coast though. today where it's not going to be raw and breezy. that again comes tomorrow. 63 to 70 tomorrow. 72 to 79. warmer than average at 7:00. and 64 to about 67 degrees. so enjoy your outdoor activitiesen it will be good on your beaches. tons of sun if you are out running errands. and we have fairly calm conditions on our water if you are going to be out there.

demanded money, and pulled out a knife. the person stole a backpack and got into a car and took off. race and social justice is one of the five issues we are focusing on in our commitment to build a better bay area. in the south bay, there is a big show of support for the aapi community. a group of japanese drummers joined an antiasian hate march. yesterday demonstrators marched from mountain view's transit center. they say it served as a processing point for japanese american entierment for world war ii. and their message was focused on calling out antiasian hate. >> stop all this senseless violence. people have to know about this stuff. >> the group aapi mountain views its purpose is to uplift

asians and reckon with mountain view's history of racism. grace baptist church looks a little different after a racist rant interrupted their easter zoom service. the church's pastor says the congregation was still hurting from november's deadly stabbing that killed two people at a church shelter. he says they've had to take measures to protect worshipers. >> we did secure our zoom a little bit better. but it also helps that in person armed security here. >> reverend oliver says zoom has been able to identify at least one person in that racist rant. the paint brushes were out in oakland's china town as artists put together murals with a message. these beautiful works were targeting the recent wave of recent antiasian hate crimes. some focused on immunity while others encouraged support and

yeah that may happen again this summer. unfortunately as the drought is going to be even worse than the last summer. in novato, the driest state in the country. let's take a look at that is going on in san rafael. you can see off in the distance a little bit of haze out there. thankfully the fog, the visibility it's producing hasn't been anything dangerous. the closer you are to the coast into san francisco, we've made that transition. so when you look at seven-day forecast, the coast is more san francisco now than the bay is during the rain season. so temperatures pretty close to average there. but everybody else around four to ten degrees warmer as we hit 68 in oakland. to nearly 80 in livermore. now how about the giants? some people may say it's a surprising start. others like oh, i knew. 6:45 first pitch. of course it will be breezy and cool. 56 dropping down to 52. a change of pace as the winds come on shore. you can seat 80s are gone. 50 i along the coast.
