yesterday afternoon in brooklyn center, 10 miles from where george floyd died. within hours of the situation, hundreds of protesters filled the streets. police say they were trying arrest wright after they determined he had outstanding warrants during a traffic stop. they say he got back into his car and started to drive away. that is when an officer shot wright.'s car continued for several blocks before hitting another car . wright died at the scene. his mother says, he called her as he was being pulled over. >> i said why did you get pulled over? he said they pulled him over because he had air freshener is hanging from the rearview mirror. a minute later i called and his girlfriend answered, which was the passenger in the car. she said that he had been shot. >> police and national guard presence is effects to be high over the next few days. minnesota governor tim walz tweeted he is, quote, playing for daunte wright family as our state mourns the life of another black man taken by law

enforcement. governor walz will hold a news conference later this evening. for mike peters in the murder trial of former police officer derek chauvin are expected to wrap up their case this week. chauvin is the officer who knelt on george floyd's neck as he was on the ground. over the last two weeks, the jury has heard from medical experts testifying that chauvin's actions were largely to blame for george floyd's death. the defense is expected to call many witnesses to argue his heart and drug issues led to his death. >> they will try to call experts to talk about the fentanyl in his system, they will have an expert that is going to say, this could've been considered an overdose. >> before the defensethe defense over, prosecutors will likely call george floyd loved ones to tell the jury who he was as a person. observers believe the jury could get this case in a little more than a week. now to covid-19, the effort to vaccinate californians. nearly half of people 16 and

older in the state have received at least one dose new state numbers show more than a quarter of them are fully vaccinated. california has administered more than 80% of its vaccine supply. covid-19 case rates in the state have remained steady. estate reports 105 death saturday. number of deaths based on a seven day average are at the lowest since early december. hospitalizations are also continuing to decline anyone 16 and up in alameda county, or if you work in alameda county, cannot schedule a vaccine appointment. this comes ahead of the state extending our ability to everyone on thursday, contra costa county is already there. they got an early start on notability a few weeks ago. san francisco is vaccinating anyone if you live within eight underserved zip codes. it is back to school for thousands of schools in san francisco. thousands of preschools and elementary will be reopening for in person learning. part of an effort to build a better bay area, abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield joining us live outside jameer elementary, where students are coming back to class this

morning, amy? >> reporter: good morning. this is one of 22 elementary schools will be reopening today. safety will be a huge issue, and they will notice it right when they get here. there are red circles it'll take place starting a home, they will be screened at home, then they will be screened here at school, teachers have been vaccinated, so they put a lot of safety measures in place. administers a student also will be eating in their classrooms or outside. they will not be eating in the cafeteria. that so they can keep everybody in their small cohort. and the district has arranged for students and teachers to be covid test it. now this is a 22 elementary schools today. parents tell us they are happy for the young children, but they are worried about the older kids. one father told us his son's high school won't be opening this school year.

>> if anything, he is the one who struggled the most with distance learning and the longer he stays in distance learning, the worse it. >> reporter: the school district to help stop 20,000 get back in the classroom by the end of this month. that is not even half of the kids in the district. conferences go unified served 55,000 students. they don't think they will all be back in class until the fall. they will be celebrating today's openings though, the superintendent will be at one of the elementary schools to cheer on teachers and students as they return to the classroom for the first time in more than a year. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. thank you, amy. classrooms in san leandro will be reopening this morning for in person learning. today marks the start of the school district hybrid model, which will combine online learning and classroom instruction for all grade levels. families have the option to keep their children in remote learning. the district says though nearly half of san leandro families say they prefer to return to in

person learning. developing news, windsor mayor will not step down as more women accused him of assault. the chronicle report a group of windsor residents will begin their recall paperwork today. for mike yesterday, a group of protesters gathered outside the winery hiko on. a comes as the six woman has come forward. esther lemus told the santa rosa press that she was drugged and sexually assaulted twice 2020. he tells the newspaper he denied those claims and accuses her of sexual conduct, after she course, he said, into an alleged sexual situation, threatening his political career if he told anyone. meantime, his brother has removed him from the payroll and publicly encouraged him to resign. >> i believe that we should hold our elected officials to higher standards. and for that reason, i believe my brothers step down as mayor of windsor. >> over the weekend, he

unlawful assembly. is unclear who organize this, but it appeared there were far more counter protesters, many of them representing black lives matter. there were some scuffles and a few incidents involving police officers uc berkeley police are investigating a new and disturbing type of bike robbery. there have been several recently in the east bay held. and in one of these incidents, police say a cyclist was assaulted and had a mountain bike stolen on grizzly peak boulevard. the thieves also had a gun. bike clubs are urging you to ride with a friend and also let someone know where you are going. >> i wish they would, oakland, or berkeley, or someone, put patrols appear to help mitigate some of that. >> is expensive. a lot of people are having a hard time right now. i understand, but i just pray and hope i don't get robbed. >> several incidents have occurred on grizzly peak between fish ranch road and the steam trains, and others have happened along wildcat canyon. oakland police are cracking down on large crowds gathering, but something the extra rules are actually causing a new

problem. the strict enforcement comes in response to a rise in complaints about trash, parking, and annoy the neighborhood. yesterday, officers enforce the rules, but on just one side of the park, so that pushed everyone, including food vendors onto the other side, north side. residency people were forced to squeeze together, raising concerns about social distancing. >> they had the whole other side blocked off, because there are too many people, but all it's doing is making a smaller space with the same amount of people. >> abc7 reached out oakland police and city leaders to get their take on these park issues, but they have not yet responded. they may be small, but they are mighty. the tiny terriers jumping into action after figuring out that there was a much larger intruder inside their home in southern california. please look at the surveillance video. captured in after the whole thing. this bear just thought about getting into the fountain, and

taking a look at some of the low clouds and fog roaming around the north bay, thankfully visibility is not dangerously low. you can definitely see changes as you head south on 101 from san rafael, where it's about 43 and calm. temperatures today, there you go, san francisco is 63. the average near the coast and in sentences go, but the rest of us, 4 to 10 degrees warmer than average from 60 in oakland

learning today. now the district has 64 elementary schools, so not even half of the district young children will be in the city returning today. the kid you are going to school today will be in class for the first time in more than a year. and many parents say they are thrilled to see this day. administrators say they do have a safety plan in place, which will include covid testing procedures and for the students. they will keep opening other elementary schools this month, and they do have a plan to bring back some middle school and high school students in the next few weeks. >> april 26, and that will be for a select group of middle school and high school students. >> to support those who have had limited engagement, foster youth in the public housing, or single room occupancy's. >> reporter: but most high school and middle school

students will stay home in san francisco until the fall. for those who are returning today, they will complete a health screening at home, then they will be screened at school. all teachers who want to have been able to get vaccinated. lunch will not be served in the cafeteria. they will eat in the classroom or outside, so they can keep those courts together, so they have taken many safety percussions to do what they can to keep the faith, but distance learning is still an option for those who aren't quite ready yet to return to class. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. thank you, amy. the u.s. is facing new challenges.

three more are inspected to do the same this week. in washington, fate of ube, abc news. san francisco department of public health is working to manage a rush of people trying to get vaccinated. we saw another long line at zuckerberg semper cisco general hospital yesterday. this is a drop in location for residents who are eligible for a vaccine, or live in certain zip codes. saturday, the hospital had to turn away thousands of people, because it ran out of doses for the day. >> i wasn't really expecting to get yesterday, because i went at noon. so it was just to try and get more information, because of confusing online. the calls are all, like the lines are all busy. so it was more to get information that if i could get a vaccine, that would be great. >> they are encouraging people to come back later this week. or check out sf.gov/get vaccinated. there you will find other vaccine sites and appointments. a san francisco board of supervisors will be voting on an emergency ordinance tomorrow and will require high-rise

office buildings to comply with local ventilation regulations. this is coming as offices across the city start to reopen. the proposed ordinance would only apply to high-rise buildings with 2000 square feet. it would also create a system file complaints with the city, if regulations are followed. good ventilation is considered key in preventing the spread of covid-19 in buildings. this morning, concerns of the caribbean island of st. vincent, hours after a major power outage. the island is bracing for more volcanic eruptions. jobina is tracking the situation at the live desk >> thank you, reggie. thousands are expected to evacuate st. vincent, three cruise ships are ready to serve as emergency filters. the eruption of the volcano on friday pumped clouds of ash six miles into the air. >> when i walk the streets, feet will literally think in inches into the ash. i was broken. i cried. i can't believe this is my

what's going on. we will have pretpret weather for outdoor activities, as you head into the afternoon hours, starting up in the 40s, just about everywhere at 7:00. we will stay in the 50s at the coast, upper 60s to low 70s around noon, and then low to upper 70s around 4:00. for your outdoor activities, everything is really nice and breezes won't be very aggressive today. in fact, today is about the least aggressive they will be all week. if you are going to be outside, just make sure you have some sunglasses, as these low cloud will give way to a few high clouds. it will definitely be a bright day with high amounts of uv index, very high the next two days. the burn factor, the time is going to shrink. a couple of new players, as tree pollen continues to pump out high amounts of cedar, juniper, oak and pine. we've got moderate amounts of grass pollen, not only today but also tomorrow. sorry for those of you that have allergies. we will take a look at the
