letting anyone over the age of 16 sign up for a shot. some counties are already there. but are we ready? >> stephanie looks at the decrease in supply. this couldn't have come at a worse time. >> reporter: the next two weeks is right around what california was perceiving a month ago, far we need to be. those yet to receive shots getting an appointment this week will become that much more difficult. >> reporter: california's vaccine supply is shrinking days before 16 million californians who have yet to receive one dose become eligible. >> so there is going to be a real tug-of-war here to see who can get the vaccine. >> reporter: you von maldonado has spent the majority of her career studying how to effectively get vaccines out. she says it will take california at leastat leastat lt to get back to what is referred to as our baseline supply. >> it is frustrating. believe me, everyone i have talked to is frustrated.

but these are logistical problems that happen when you are working on making a vaccine for the entire worl essentially. >> reporter: the state confirms that due to a shortage of johnson & johnson vaccines, 1 million doses will be available for californians that still need their first shot. that is a 33% drop from last week. next week, another 4% drop is expected. >> by april 15th, if millions of people try to get a vaccine, it's going to take some time. it will take a number of weeks. it will extend, perhaps, over a month. >> reporter: the 65 and older population is mostly vaccinated with one dose. that percentage for the 16 and older population is currently at 43%. >> it is not time yet to claim victory. >> reporter: mike wasserman sits on the vaccine advisory committee. we have heard from the state that by may the

will be substantially increasing. how confident are you that that will really happen? >> i am very confident that in the next month or two, we will have ample supply of vaccine. i am less confident that we are doing everything in our power to get the vaccine to the people who need it most, and the people who are falling by the wayside not getting vaccinated. >> reporter: despite the backlog that has been attributed to the vaccine plan in baltimore, both dr. wasserman and dr. maldonado are confident that once supply increases, the nation is still on track to reaching herd immunity by sometime this summer. stephanie sierra, abc7 news. >> let's talk about the appointment process. has the state confirmed when people are scheduling their appointments once the eligibility expands this thursday? >> yes. midnight on wednesday or the crack of dawn on thursday, however you look site will be live, expecting appointments for anyone 16 and older. for other providers, scheduling times may vary.

keep in mind, points will be limited until the supply increases. the best advice i have is to keep refreshing and check for cancellations. >> that is good advice. stay on it. a second bay area county started advertising shots for anyone 16 and older. this will become the rule statewide starting on this thursday, april 15th, leading to a massive increase in demand. lose pain you is part of the vaccine team and spoke to vaccine teams, luz pena, they know they are in for it, right? >> reporter: they are only four days away from the vaccine expansion. today, alameda got vaccine for everyone who is approved to be vaccinated. officials say this is what the out coming days will look like as millions across the state will finally qualify to get vaccinated.

>> reporter: 17 drive-through lanes with cars coming out of the o.co coliseum, this mega vaccination site is expecting to vaccinate 5000 people, today. it is the first day that alameda county is opening up vaccine eligibility to those 16 and older. the news spread fast.spread fas. this 16-year-old and his mom booked an appointment for today. >> we were able to do it pretty quick. that was awesome, you know? because i don't want to get sick. >> reporter: the healthcare services agency director was anticipating this influx, today, and says what they need now is supply. >> there is not enough vaccine supply ready. that is a challene we are all facing. evil in the interim are going to have to be patient. we ask people to be patient and we will contact you when more vaccine becomes available. this is outside of the general hospital, hoping to give one of

2000 doses available for residents who live in the hardest hit neighborhoods, some are comparing this lines many are you stew for black friday. the only difference now, they are hoping to get vaccines, not tv screens. >> even though there would be demand when we opened up, i don't know it would be that high. the goal is, you know, as soon as we can get more vaccine, to deliver those doses. >> reporter: 4000 walk-ins were turned away at this site. the dph deputy director is hopeful that the april 15th date approaches and access will expand, even though the supply continues to be limited. >> is not just -- you know -- certain sites. even though we will see increased demand, we will have providers able to provide injections and vaccines.

>> reporter: 57% of san franciscans have received at least one dose of the vaccine. based on numbers from april 15th, 330,000 people in the san francisco area will automatically qualify to get vaccinated. again, that is 330,000 people going to book an appointment this week. san francisco county only received 10,000 doses asdoses as asking residents to be patient and know that there will be enough vaccine for everyone in the upcoming weeks, just not by thursday. in the newsroom, the newsroom, , news. >> a question a lot of people are wondering, when the state opens maxeys nations to everyone, can people go outside the county to find a shot? >> yes. large vaccination sites, according to the anyone will be able to search for appointments on the states website and book appointments outside of their county. counties can still block appointments from going to people who are not locals. so if your county doesn't have

enough shots, you can look somewhere else, but keep in mind, wherever you get your first shot is where you should go back to get your second. >> thank you, we saw people getting vaccinated at the o.co coliseum. this is the first day the site is not being run by the federal government. this is the live view from the 880 tower camera. you can see the right side of your screen. it has set up the coliseum's parking lot. it has been the most productive vaccination site, providing 6000 shots a day because the federal government supplied the vaccines. doses will come from a mix of the state and two counties, alameda and koster county -- contra costa is another vaccination site at the marin county fairgrounds. officials have redesigned site to vaccinate 3600 people a day depending on supply. you must make an appointment. you don't have to have insurance through kaiser. are you trying to find a

vaccination appointment? two bay area high school students might have the solution. they created a twitter account called kovacs excess. you allow the notifications. the bot will not book an appointment. that responsibility falls on the person. the individual who wants the shot, one of the creators explain how this idea evolved. >> both of our parents -- they were checking it every hours. they did not have time to sit there and check it again and again and again. so, we thought, you know, we could save them time. as we built it, they were like, our friends like this.like this. >> it is really clever. the teachers are not taking donations. they are asking people to donate to charity that is

for the first time in more than a year, some of the public schools opened for in person learning. 22 of the 64 elementary schools welcomed students back as did 11 preschool sites. only preschool through second grade is in the classroom. more campuses will be opening. more students will return over the next few weeks. some parents were sending their kids back. >> they have been out of school for too long. this is their sponge years. i'm not a teacher. i'm just a mom. >> there are a number of safe precautions in place, including masks and eating meals outside. the school district pledged to reopen five days a week.

as schools across the bay area returned to in person learning, covid protocols are on the forefront for the staff. dustin dorsey shows how a south bay custodian is doing all he can do to create a safe and healthy environment for his work family. >> reporter: in the coronavirus pandemic began, the once busy campuses of elementary schools like frost and san jose empty. everyone moved to virtual learning. well, everyone except custodian, ben marino. >> it's nonstop. >> reporter: the elementary school custodian goes unnoticed. some call him the unsung hero of the school. he says his work is more important than ever to protect the students he cares so much about. >> every single custodian we have in the district is very, very important. i do believe -- i think we are

all heroes. i don't have any children. you know, if i had a kid, i would want to make sure they were going to a school that was just clean, safe, ready to go and learn. >> that requires constant work, often times by himself. while the school day goes on, to the assembly of protected shields -- >> these shields will be on students and teachers desk. i understand where the families are coming from. they don't know if it's safe or not safe. what i have to say about that, i know i am doing my best and making sure it is clean so everybody can come to work knowing that this is a safe place to be. >> reporter: frost elementary and the oak grove school district will return to safe and hygienic in person learning with pre-k through first grades returning on the sixth, second and third grades return on may

degrees warmer than at this time, yesterday. we will have a warm-up with the increase in wind. near the tower, that's all that's visible. it is getting a push into the golden gate. we will reach out over the bay and maybe across the bay during the overnight hours. right now, it is 61 in oakland. 65, san jose, 59 at morgan hill -- and 54 at half moon bay. at the golden gate right now, skies appear blue from this angle, but you get a hint of low clouds beginning to approach. it is 67 degrees novato, 77. we have mid-70s near concorde and livermore. here is the view across the breezy embarcadero under the blue skies from the rooftop camera. we will see increasing wind tomorrow. we will have higher elevations along the coastline. it will be down in the lower line area. it won't be so windy.

the last couple days brought a much more pattern -- over the weekend. you'll notice lots of high clouds in the early evening hours. those high clouds will get swept out of here during the overnight hours. the low clouds will increase during some portion of the coastline. we will begin the with more clouds, mainly sunny skies. it will be sunny throughout the day with increasing wind that i have mentioned earlier. look for low temperatures in the mid 40s. it is not a wide range of overnight lows. it is chilly in some valley locations where it drops down

>> it is interesting. we have never seen anything like this in the bay area or in the nation as a whole. it is when everyone picked up their laptops and walked out of the high-rises in downtown san francisco and a number of businesses throughout the bay area, and began working from home. the biggest impact as far as people returning is the fact that it could bring city centers into the communities where the office complexes are that are now empty. that would be vital for getting the economy some of those estimated 60,000 jobs we lost back online. one of the more interesting byproducts, whether it is good or bad remains to be seen, is the new idea of people working for home -- from home for another year. i will share a bay area council survey that will be released, tomorrow. it represents 330 of the biggest employers, tech companies, big colleges, health

systems -- prior to the pandemic, they found that 6% of the workforce worked from home. now that number is 26%. that means a quarter of the workforce is working from home. there are 4 million workers in the bay area, that means 900,000 people are waiting to come back to work. that is something big impacting one way or another. >> yeah, that is a big chunk. companies are setting their own timelines. they are saying it will bring back vaccinated employers -- employees, starting next month. do you think employees or workers will drive the return? >> i think it will be the vaccines and the availability of it and people getting vaccinated. that is going to be the biggest driver. that's what i'm hearing from companies and representatives. starting to open up in april and may, it's not going to be

until the summer or the end of the summer -- or actually the fall. everyone is waiting to see what happens. it will be a question of who can get vaccinated, and can we get to the threshold where people are comfortable in the elevator going up to the office? are they comfortable getting back on mass transit? how are we going to get to work? all that will be worked out. companies are keeping a flow with the option that you can work from home. it is safety for everybody. they will get swamped at one time. >> before we let you go, your prediction -- look at the crystal ball, if you will, what will san francisco look like six months from now. >> hopefully, it will not be as strong. it might take a couple years. we might have conventions going in. we might see more of what we had before, but not as much as we would have liked to see, basically it. we might have a couple concerts inside sports events and movies we could go to on the weekends. that's my hope for 6 months.

2003. sophia williams was one of them. she said, there would be more. >> to hear the other stories made me realize that there is probably a lot of victims with stories just like mine >> reporter: moore have come forward, including esther lemus, who serves on the town council and for the county as a deputy district attorney. that office has set its investigation to the state attorney general. foppoli, meantime, has accused the victim of sexualizing him., quote, i find it laughable that mayor foppoli is himself as a victim. wednesday night, the town council asked for that. deborah fudge -- >> we really condemn the actions of our neighbor, and wer are meeting on wednesday to call on him to resign. >> reporter: the town council can only ask for a resignation to force the mayor out. it would take a recall. that movement has already started with signatures from 500 households and counting.

minneapolis suburb. police say it was an accident. body cameras captioned what happened. we have the video. >> reporter: brooklyn cent police when an officer intended to use her taser, and instead, accidentally shot her gun, killing 20-year-old daunte wright. after he was stopped for a traffic violation sunday afternoon, they determined he had an outstanding warrant for a misdemeanor offense. police began taking him into custody. there was a struggle. as he tried to get into his car, the officer can be yellow -- heard yelling, taser, taser. but she fired her gun instead. the officer just saying -- i just shot him. they called the accident and accidental discharge. >> from the officer's distress and reaction immediately after, this was an accidental discharge that caused the death of mr. right.

>> reporter: he was pronounced dead at the scene despite paramedics trying to save him. >> there is nothing i can say to lessen the pain of his family. i can give my deepest sympathies and be transparent with the information i'm aware of at this time. >> reporter: protesters took to the streets. 20 businesses were damaged or looted overnight. protesters threw objects at officers and smashed windows. >> we will do all within our power to make sure that justice is done for daunte wright. >> reporter: his mother said he called him -- her when he got

pulled over. >> the officer said, put the phone down and hung up. >> reporter: the officer is on administrative leave. this is happening 10 miles away from the courthouse where a former minneapolis police officer, derek chauvin, is on trial in the death of george floyd. abc news, new york. the prosecution's case against derek chauvin drew toward a closed today with yet more emotional testimony. george floyd's younger brother took the stand, sharing memories of their relationship, describing floyd as a mama's boy. >> on may 24th, i got married. and my brother was killed on may 25th. and my mom died on may 30th. it's like a bittersweet month, because i was supposed to be happy when that month comes. >> today's testimony wrapped up with a police use of force expert who said no reasonable officer would have done what sheldon did. the prosecution case is expected to conclude, tomorrow. we are providing gavel to gavel coverage in the abc7 bay area connected tv app. download it wherever you

theme for evening of wishes. this event will be virtual. it is just as inspiring as years past. i am so excited to be hosting the gala. christian ramos is 18 years old. he was diagnosed with stage four hodgkin's lymphoma last april right at the beginning of the pandemic. >> it was pretty rough. i couldn't have no visitors in the hospital. it was me and my parents the whole time. >> what was the toughest part about being sick? >> i would say, probably, not being able to be myself all the way. like i wasn't able to function right. like there was dazed -- like, before i got diagnosed -- like i wasn't able to leave my house. i was unable to like -- do anything. i had to put on an oxygen machine. i just had to stay in one spot and sit with an oxygen machine to even breathe properly.
