welcome back to abc7 news, a proud sponsor year after year leadership event, bringing together thousands of professional women. worldwide, this year's professional businesswomen of california conference is coming up in may, while the three-day event will be virtual again, the incredible insights are no different. so with us isus isus isus isus s globally recognized leadership expert and author of the new book, digital body language. how to build trust and connection, no matter the distance. erica, thanks for being here. >> thank you so much for having me. >> so let's start with the basics, what is digital body language? what do you mean by that?
3:23 pm
>> digital body language are the cues and signals we send in our digital communication, and they make up the subtext of our messages. everything from the punctuation we use, to a response time, to how we greet or signoff an email, to our video call backgrounds. trust and respect and engagement in our >> your book is so relevant, obviously, to this past year. we've all been on zoom and, you know, virtual for months now. how is our body language changed, as we have moved into a more online, virtual world? and what impact you think that has on a relationship that we might not even realize? >> research shows roughly 75% of our face-to-face collaboration is nonverbal body language. so in a world where now 72 up to 100% is virtual, body language hasn't disappeared, it has transformed. for example, we now have no direct true eye contact. while i may be looking in the camera, liz, you may be looking into the camera, which is not
3:24 pm
as natural and does not allow us to create that same level of connection. another example is the fact that on a video call, we see our own thumbnail on the screen, which also isn't natural to see her own body language when we are trying to connect with someone else. what we can do is remember, to assume good intent, to remember that it is harder to connect on a screen, but at the same time, we take simple steps to listen clearly, to engage others to get feedback and create a space, so everyone can speak up. we will be able to is still foster connection, no matter the distance. >> for sure, erica, it's interesting, i know you conducted a study that found the average person wastes about four hours per week on poor digital communication, they waste about four hours per week, why and how do we fix that? >> i ran a study with research, and we identified that there is a significant waste in time, simply because often managers are sending brief, unclear
3:25 pm
emails, instead of taking the time to send clear messages. the most simple things we can do is to never confuse a brief message with a clear message. secondly, hold your horses. remember not to rush in your messages, take the time to be careful. and last but not least, make sure to know when to switch the channel, when to use zoom, when to use on email, when to send a text. the simple awareness of the complexity, familiarity and urgency of information will allow you to better create cultures of clarity, instead of confusion. >> so, i know be something as simple as responding to a text in a timely manner. on the flipside though, it can also be really stressful to get text messages and emails and have to respond to them right away, how do you juggle that? >> so if you are someone who is dealing with a serial texter, and you just don't have time to respond 24/7, here's a couple of tips. first and you can do is say a
3:26 pm
simple, got it, i'm busy right now, i will respond, just to get out of your way, to not feel pressured. another thing you can do is to know when to not respond and come back to it later. don't get emotionally hijacked. remember, it may not be urgent. now if you are on the other side, if you have an urgent request that you are sending by text and you need information from someone, make sure to let them know it is urgent, give a clear response time expectation. one example is to use acronyms. for example, 2h means i need this in two hours or 4d means i need this in four days, it'll allow others to know what the priority and expectation is. >> oh, my gosh, and still thinking about brb from our aol i'm days. >> i have another one for you, rom which means respond on monday, especially if you are sending a message on a sunday. >> that's a good one. i will get your book and all the little new terms i need to know.
3:27 pm
thank you, erica. final question, you are going to be a speaker at the bb wc event, what can we expect from you? >> every attendee will learn the new signals of digital body language, that they may be sending, even if they don't intend to, they will also learn practical ways to foster trust and engagement, no matter the distance in video calls, emails, text message exchanges, and even in modern-day texting. last but not least, i will share key workplace strategies to foster culture, trust, and collaboration. >> erica, i gotta wrap it up, and getting the queue, so sorry. this was great. erica, author of digital body language him a thank you so much. once again, the professional businesswoman of califo
