understatement for the confusion and concern over blood clots linked to the johnson & johnson coronavirus vaccine. good evening. thank you for joining us tonight. for the next 15 minutes we are going all in surrounding the johnson & johnson vaccine including who is affected, how bay area counties are responding plus, a live interview with dr. patel. he is a member of the vaccine team. of almost 7 million patients who received the shot, keep in mind, six women developed a rare blood clot disorder. it is literally a one in 1 million event. that is important respect is to have. it was enough that today, the fda and cdc called for an immediate pause on the use of that single-dose vaccine. all 50 states have heeded the advice including california. we will begin team coverage with stephanie sierra. she is tracking how many appointments will be affected in the coming days. >> reporter: tens of thousands of appointments will be impacted across the state. the good news is the state supply of johnson & johnson vaccine was already shrinking. most providers and mass

vaccination sides have not been relying on those doses to maintain the majority of appointments. >> pulling the j&j vaccine from our clinics and our distribution network >> following a meeting with the white house covid-19 task force, the governor is temporarily positing any use of the johnson & johnson vaccine while the cdc and fda investigate a handful of rare blood clotting cases. >> we will learn more about some of the nuances and details and in terms of where the vaccines were administered and who those individuals are. >> the state received more than 67,000 doses of johnson & johnson vaccine this week.

8800 of which are currently scheduled appointment on the states "my turn" site. >> we are working to convert those reservations to moderna and pfizer alternatives. >> the good news, as dr. george rutherford explained -- >> we went using very much j&j vaccine. >> we do not expect many allocation. >> the data explains why. >> the cdc's latest vaccine totals and of the more than 23 million doses administered in california, johnson & johnson vaccines make up less than 4% where as moderna makes up 45%. pfizer is even more at 50%. >> moderna and the pfizer vaccine are perfectly safe.perf. i don't want people to generalize from this. this is a specific problem with this vaccine and the astrazeneca vaccine. this is six people out of 6.8 million doses that have been administered. it is a one in 1 million complication. >> rutherford is competent, even with the projected supply loss, the state is still on track to reopen the economy by june. >> i don't think this sets back governor newsome's goal of june 15th either.

we will get this figured out. >> reporter: the cdc expects these blood clot cases will be fully vetted within a matter of days. meantime, the state says the pols will not be impacting the eligibility expansion for anyone 16 and older which is set to happen this thursday. >> staff, since you have been in touch with the state do you know how people will be notified of their appointment change? we will yes. the state is sorting through that right now, dan pick if you previously scheduled an appointment with the johnson & johnson dose, you will be notified of the states "my turn" site. the state has asked other providers to do the same. meantime, if you are dealing with a smaller clinic, you can expect a text, call, or even an email to reschedule your appointment. >> okay. that is good enough. it is not surprising a revelation like this may alarm those who just received a vaccine. we spoke to two women today who were recently vaccinated. when is concerned and the other is not. >> i feel if i was going to have any negative effects, i would have had them i really. >> i am feeling fine.

>> as a black man, malcolm and john went into medicine to help his community. he is an infectious disease specialist at ucsf. after seeing how blacks were three times more likely to die from covid, he led an effort to vaccinate his community in the church is. j&j was the main vaccine they administered. >> we are partners with the community. we are from thththththth does this concern me? yes. for a number of reasons. obviously, the data itself, its impact on those who have had the vaccine. >> as the johnson & johnson news broke out, dr. john a says transparency will be key. for months, they gained the community's trust. now, this could set the work back. >> particularly the black community which has had some higher rates of vaccine hesitancy and actually embraced the j&j vaccine. >> in the last three weeks, they vaccinated 400

glide church has been using the johnson & johnson vaccine to vaccinate the homeless population. what is the plan with that? >> reporter: the san franciso clad memorial church group is also stopping the johnson & johnson vaccinations for now. so far, 300 of the vaccines have gone to the tenderloin residents in the area. the majority of those have been homeless. they are now pivoting to the moderna vaccine. let's continue our coverage now from our abc7 news vaccine team. we are bringing in dr. patel. dr., on a scale of wind-10, how worried are you about the blood clots in j&j's vexing? >> that is a tough question. i am going to say, with regards to how worried i am about the potential risk i am going to put that at a 1 or 2. with regards to the effect other end of the spectrum. i am putting that as an 8. i think there are two potential effects. i am more worried about what

will happen with regards to trust in the process. it should actually boost trust. the one thing bashing on the statistics and downplaying the fact that there are still six women who were severely affected from this. one lost her life. i want to make sure people are cognizant that there are still people out there worried about them. i am sincerely hoping that is taken into account the people speak about this. >> a good point. a blood clots or serious. >> dr., we have a viewer who want to help. >>: says i had the j&j vaccine yesterday. i am on hormone replacement patches. should i stop those? we know but you are a doctor. what would you tell her? >> i am citing what you may read from the cdc and the american college of obstetricians and gynecologists. hormone therapy whether it is a

patch or oral contraceptive can increase your risk of blood clots. it is a different type of blood clot that is being reported in the rare blood clot in these cases. what we have not there is any link between the johnson and johnson vexing and these six cases. it was possible to get a closer look at what happened in these cases. as of right now, i will tell helen there is any indication to stop the therapy. she has any particular questions? absolutely check in with your family doctor or obstetrician gynecologist or whoever is monitoring the therapy. >> finally, with this full stop on j&j at least for a moment, will this adversely impact the vaccination rate as it accelerating? >> from a supply chain standpoint i don't think it will hinder as much as it could if it were pfizer or moderna or if there was a ramp up and supply. we saw the 15 million that would pause because of the

san pablo things seemed normal. they had been administering johnson & johnson shots but had enough moderna to cover the people coming in. >> to me i was thinking a shot is a shot. >> only 4% of their vaccines were johnson and johnson and they did not have to cancel any appointments . they are being forced to change their homeless outreach plan. >> unfortunately now we are having to shift to pfizer for the mobile operations. we will continue that pays but it is going to be with a different product just not as easy to work with. >> mayor london breed recently got her dose of the j&j vaccine but she hadn't felt any negative symptoms no, she felt it was worrisome. >> sky 7 was over the oakland coliseum which had transitioned to the shot but they were able to switch to pfizer this morning saying they don't expect any cancellations. >> in santa clara county officials say they are working to make sure the change doesn't disrupt their vaccination goals

either. >> we are making sure any dose we gather will be followed up by a second dose. >> you heard from dr. marty from santa clara county. we talked with him about an event how the client is very eager. there opening up vaccinations to anyone 16 and older. the county was excited to have the doses to do that. >> the county system is receiving a lot of vaccines. significant increase in vaccine supply that is coming directly from the federal government. combined with the increase from our state, we now have another vaccine to quickly reach our goal of protecting our entire community. >> residents or those who work in the county and or are at least 16 years of age can book an appointment through the website. san francisco also expanded eligibility to include anyone

over 16. on thursday, california expands vaccine eligibility statewide to anyone 16 and up. that is starting at midnight thursday. you can go to the my turn website to look for a vaccine appointment anywhere in the state. there will no longer be limits on having to stay within your county. wherever you can get an appointment you will go. a demand consistently outpaces supply so prepared to be patient. >> keep that in mind, definitely . my getting vaccinated is a big step to getting back the lifestyle we used to have. tonight, a step-by-step guide to going to a warriors game in a pandemic. i am not incarcerated. i haven't been incarcerated. i am not sure how that worked out. >> it seems pretty obvious he is not in jail but the edd thinks he is. returned to 7 on your side michael finney for the help.

the annual 420 celebration and golden gate goes up . it is officially canceled today because of the pandemic. officials is a robin williams meadow will be fenced off and they are urging people not to come to san francisco to celebrate. >> we will patrol the area. we will be on the lookout for large, massive events in our city. the bigger issue for us is the last thing we want to see is san francisco go backward.

hours. the winds what is up going into the wee hours of the morning expect along the coast. later in the day tomorrow we will see the winds kick in the afternoon and the evening hours. this breezy pattern will be with us. overnight, as the breeze is diminishing in the wee hours of the morning we can expect fog to develop around parts of the coastline mainly south of golden gate. after that, fog goes away giving us another sunny and breezy day. overnight low temperatures will be mainly in tomorrow under sunny skies and breezy conditions look for highs at 58. 62 in san francisco but when you get to other locations near the bay shoreline you will see highs rising into the upper 60s. most of the inland locations will see highs in the low to mid 70s. here is the 7-day forecast. lighter winds on thursday. slightly cooler as well. friday, the warming begins.

the bay area is going to face old and new problems as companies develop plans to bring workers back to the office. getting the economy back on track as a part of building a better bay area. david louis looks at a new poll of bay area residents and how they will likely bring back the traffic nightmares of pre- pandemic days. >> as companies bring office workers back, new --back, new connected to service because of safety concerns. they surveyed 1000 people last month in english, chinese and in spanish undiscovered 51% consider working at the offices and safe. many believe public transit unsafe. what. what. what. what.t

know why. it should have never ever escalated the way it did. >> right now, a march is happening at the scene of the shooting. there have been rallies since this happened. several businesses were damaged and some officers were hurt. the scene is 10 miles from the courthouse where derek chauvin is on trial for the killing of george floyd. in derek chauvin's trial, the defense presented its case today. lawyers for the former minneapolis police officer are trying to counter the assertion from the prosecution that george floyd died because of derek chauvin's knee on his neck. a woman who was in the car with floyd last may was among those who testified today . drug use is something the defense has hit upon routinely. >> other than beingthan beingthb nodding off a little bit, did he seem abnormal to you in anyway? >> not in any way.

me developments tonight in the sexual misconduct allegations facing windsor mayor dominic foppoli. today, the board of supervisors unanimously rescinded his appointment to the board of the golden gate district. wayne friedman explains the town is not trying to distance itself from the mayor while also admitting it had been warned of his behavior. >> in windsor tonight, more questions about embattled mayor dominic foppoli and what he was allegedly doing to him and when and if anyone in local government was looking the other way. chief of police ruben martinez -- >> if we would have known back then what we know now this would have been different. >> the mayor now stands accused of sexual misconduct by 6 who date they behavior all the way back to 2003. today, the town issued a statement acknowledging they received two emails accusing the mayor of of improprieties. it first arrived in 2017 about an incident about 2013about 2013

bay area researchers are suggesting a new strategy to combat climate change and it centers on something we are ready paid to get rid of. >> it is a

sneaks in with the tide. sea levels in the bay area are expected to rise by one foot or more of the next several decades potentially overwhelming levees and seawalls around the bay. now and environmental groups is one of the most powerful weapons we have to fight back is being literally thrown away. >> there are these giant machines that dredge out the channel so big ships can come into oakland. all of that material could be reused. >> leticia is with the san francisco estuary institute. she is talking about the sediment that are dredged out of the bay every yearevery yearr in deepwater. instead the group argues the sentiment could be the perfect solution to bolster the weapons around the bay. it helps to understanto understn play a critical role in absorbing the surges. to survive they need to literally rise along with the sea level. >> what you really want is overtime for all of that
