and certainly took on different definitions. an outward facing world, but also an inward one with he became sort of the rock for the family. the queen certainly is, as well. but many able to turn to prince philip through the years. his children, grandchildren, obviously stories of even princess diana for a time when she was struggling with prince charles, that prince philip tried to help them. tried to reach out to princess diana. because he knew what it was like to join this family. ultimately, though, it didn't work out. and of course, as we mentioned this morning, the prince walking with his grandsons behind princess diana's coffin. the queen has said before the funeral today -- and she wanted to make a point of this, buckingham palace repeatedly said this -- that these were very much the personal wishes of the duke, the queen said. prince philip planned this funeral. and i want to bring in robert again. we were struck here in the studio, deborah and i were talking about this, that the readings today, in particular the first reading, so much about the outdoors, about nature,
8:01 am
about intersection of our lives with the wildlife around us, the birds and the sea. and it spoke so much about prince philip without actually talking about prince philip which i thought was sort of a metaphor for the way he carried himself, not wanting to make it about himself. but this service very much reflected him. >> well, it certainly does. as deeply moving as the service and the queen, i thought the images of the queen alone -- but as regards natural, of course, the duke of edinburgh was worked with the world wildlife funds. a man of vision, a man who got the whole movement going. he inspired his son to become one of the great environmentalists i think and his grandson, prince william, too. a deep thinking man. a well-read man. he wrote many books about birds and nature. he was a great photographer, a
8:02 am
great artist, too. a man of -- a man rethat a lot people don't know a lot about. i was deeply moved by that ceremony. i'm sure a lot of people thinking of their own loved ones who have passed. this is a family in grief. at the end, we saw william and harry, put pet squty squabbles e and be united in grief. that was a hopeful image. >> how significant do you think that will be, robert, there in the uk? >> well, i'm sure that that image will be significant to the tabloid media that get very excited about all of these things. but i think to be brutally honest, the image for me, i think the image for everybody in this country will be of her majesty, queen elizabeth, sitting alone with her mask on and contemplating the loss of her one true love. but more importantly, you know, she is 95 very soon. she's been on the throne longer than any other queen, any other
8:03 am
king. she must have -- it must have deep in thought, and i'm sure that the prince of wales will be the main supporter of her as the patriarch now of the family as we are now monarchy in transition because he will take on, if you like, a quasi-king role. >> the point that we were making earlier, there's no question the singular image of the day was queen elizabeth sitting by herself in the chapel. and the longest serving monarch in british history. of course prince philip was the longest serving spouse to the monarchy. this is a bit of a turning of the page, a few chapter, and prince charles will certain take on a much greater role, as you mentioned, rorbert. and to see prince william and duchess kate there, as well, as they define sort of the next chapter. the queen isn't going anywhere.
8:04 am
and she has proven to the british people and to the world her staying power and her strength. and that was on full display again today. victoria, i want to bring you back into the conversation. i know that this couple, like any couple, and deborah mentioned this earlier in our coverage, they -- they certainly had their struggles as a married couple, and they kept that for the most part very, very private. it's only in the stories that we've read in books and in portrayals on television, certainly people watching this morning, many of whom have watched "the crown." questions about how much of that was actually a true reflection of the royal family. but prince philip famously said, we've got to make this monarchy thing work. he always was aware of sort of the very obvious distance between the royal family and the public, and he wanted to find a way to make them more accessible, more ordinary, long before there was pressure to do that for the royal family. he sensed what it is we watch
8:05 am
them go through today. >> i think that's very interesting. yes. i think this will be a huge part of his legacy. i think that he was an outward looking man, wasn't interested in the pomp of pageantry. wasn't excited about the fact that he was marrying into royalty. he was more interested in looking at the world around him and thinking about how it worked and how he could help to make it better. i think that's what he passed on to his children and his grandchildren. he said he had so many interests and so many things, and he was definitely interested in progression and in always looking at ways that that could be done. and i think that that did set the tone for what we see now with the royal family for them continuing to be outward looking and continuing to understand the importance of modernizing. >> victoria, thank you, all morning long. i wanted to show the viewers watching us this morning some of the american connection with philip and elizabeth through the years. there you see them with the kennedys. the first president that prince philip would meet would be president truman. that puts this in perspective.
8:06 am
the reagans, the bushes there, i believe that's camden yards with president george h.w. bush and first lady barbara bush. of course, the clintons and then the obamas. prince philip there and queen elizabeth. they have partnered with american presidents and first ladies for so many years, and that will be something we miss here, james, and i know that you went out of your way to sort of report on that american relationship. it's been a very close one for so many decades. and prince philip will be missed here in the united states, as well. >> yeah, absolutely. i think, you know, there's a real love of monarchy around the world. the united states is no exception. i think our hearts really go out to the queen, whether you're in the united states, in the united kingdom, anywhere on earth today, that is who people are thinking of. that moment in the church where we saw her in the pew with her mask on sitting alone, when the national anthem was sung, that was so extraordinary. to me, it wasn't sad.
8:07 am
it was a moment we were watching the queen doing her duty which is exactly what philip would have wanted. that is why to people all over the world she's such a symbol. today was also about two families saying good-bye, i think. yes, the royal family, but also the wider military family. you know, philip was representative of an entire generation, a generation of war heroes, people for whom duty and service and honor were the most important things. and people who didn't talk about themselves, they wanted to help other people, and that is what i'm taking away today, david, i think. and today was such a fitting tribute to prince philip. >> james longman, right there in windsor for us. james, excellent reporting, really, in the days leading up to this as we sort of narrated together a reliving of the history of prince philip and his impact not only on britain but the world. his devotion to the queen. i want to bring back in deborah roberts, with me here in the studio in new york. and deborah, you and i traveled to windsor, we covered the last royal wedding, obviously harry
8:08 am
and meghan. covered the royals for so many years. one of the things that will also be missed about prince philip is his down-to-earth nature and the queen counted on him. listen, he certainly had pedigree in his roots and with his family. but he was the only one sort of with a connection to the outside world. he was able to guide the queen through those moments. she would ask him questions knowing that he would be truthful. again, they were equals behind the scenes. >> and he'd also put people at ease, too. he may have been a prince, but he was sort of the king of the one liners. even recently when he stepped down from his duties he was heard to say when somebody said "i'm sorry to hear you're stepping down," and without missing a beat he said, "i can't stand up much longer." he had a sense of humor. i think it was all about trying to puncture that mystique around the royals and make people feel a little bit at ease because he ha did have humor. he looked at them as people. i think at the end of the day people felt that in his presence. it's funny to read anecdotes about him. >> ahead of his time in saying
8:09 am
"we're people, too," and trying to demonstrate that to really the world, not only britain but to the world. thank you so much for joining us here today, and guiding us through this together. and i thank our entire team. we're going to leave you here this morning with images of this day. and as we watch here in america, i know that all of you at home are likely thinking of queen elizabeth, as well. that moment of seeing her in the chapel certainly near the end when prince philip's coffin was lowered into the vault. and again, i pointed it out earlier, but it bears repeating that eventually that is not his permanent resting place, eventually he will be brought together, and he will rest beside the queen once again just as he did in life, more than 73 years as her partner. as i mentioned earlier, happy to walk two paces behind the queen in public. but there as a true partner and as an equal in private. i'm david muir. i want to thank all of our members of our team here this morning, deborah here in new york, james, maggie, of course
8:10 am
robert, victoria, and omid, as well. we thank you at home for starting your saturday morning with us. and now the images of this day. i hope you have a safe and restful weekend. see you on monday night. good day. >> we go through life trying to make a legacy -- no. if i can live life marginally more tolerable for people who come after us or even the time i'd be delighted. >> the fact of the matter is a

marriage involves two partners. when there's lots to do, time seems to fly. until, that is, you start looking back and realize how much has changed. much can be done by an individual, but i'm sufficiently old-fashioned to believe that a great deal more can be achieved by a partnership in marriage. it's been a challenge for us. however, i think that the main lesson that we've learned is that tolerance is the one essential ingredient of any happy marriage. it may not be quite so important when things are going well, but it is absolutely vital when things get difficult. and you can take it from me that the queen has the quality of tolerance in abundance.
