coast and the bay. you can see the flags on the on ferry building definitely unfurled. and you can see 56 today in half-moon bay. 62 in san francisco. 68 in oakland. 67 at it only gets cooler from here. i'll talk about that coming up. the fate of derek chauvin is act to be in the hands of the jury. this morning closing arguments begin in the murder trial nearly one year after floyd's death. cities across the country are bracing for the verdict. >> reporter: this morning anticipation in the streets of minneapolis. crowds gathering at the now infamous corner where george floyd was pinned to the pavement for over nine minutes. tensions rising while 2,000 national guard members lined the streets on the eve of

closing arguments. so far three weeks of testimony from 45 witnesses. chauvin is facing three charges. second degree unintentional murder, third degree murder, and second degree manslaughter. he has pleaded not guilty. >> the outcome that we pray for in derek chauvin is for him to be held criminally liable for killing george floyd. >> reporter: the prosecution argue aing chauvin's actions killed floyd when he pinned him down to the ground for nine minutes and 29 seconds. >> a healthy person subjected to what mr. you'd was subjected to would have died as a result of what he was subjected to. >> reporter: defense claims it wasn't chauvin's knee that ended floyd's life. rather his drug use and heart condition. >> all the defense has to present is reasonable doubt. they don't have to occur it proved a certain way. their own expert says in this case it's uncertain as to the cause of death.

>> reporter: the city and the nation facing a reckoning. following the recent police shootings of daunte wright and adam toledo. from coast to coast preparations for unrest. in the nation's capitol officers begin around the clock 12 hour shifts. and here in minneapolis, public schools are moving to remote learning starting wednesday. minnesota lieutenant governor peggy flanagan releasing a statement ahead of closing arguments. she was commenting on the recent police shootings in her state. she says minnesota it's a place where it's not safe to be black. >> stay with abc 7 news for continuing coverage of the trial. today at 7:00 a.m., abc news will have live coverage of closing arguments from both the prosecution and defense. that is airing right here on abc 7 and streaming on our apps, apple tv, android tv, amazon fire, and roku.

covid-19 hit a milestone over the weekend. more than 10 million people are fully vaccinated against coronavirus. the state reportshaving 14 days worth of inventory. even with johnson & johnson's vaccine on hold. on average, more than 372,000 doses are being administered every day. santa clara county is working to keep up with demand for vaccines. they are adding thousands of vaccination appointments across multiple sites. that includes 10,000 for this weekend alone. people 16 and older that work and live in santa clara county are eligible to sign them. to make fccfreevacs.com. vaccinations are available to anyone 18 and up. 16 and 17-year-olds can also get their shot but they have to be accompanied bay parent and they have to have an

you can register at myturn.ca.gov. thousands of schools are opening for in person learning on the peninsula and south and east bays. amy, what do we know about that district's reopening plan? >> reporter: first of all, look at this gate behind me. how fun to see it reopened finally after a year and a month that this school has been closed. they do have safety protocols in place. we have been following one boy at this school during the pandemic. and he is very excited that this day is here. west contra costa schools are reopening today. along with a couple other districts. the east side union high school district in santa clara county. and tk through fifth grade in south san francisco. one student in san pablo has been documenting his experience during the pandemic. here he is over the weekend

talking about finally being able to return to class. >> i've been thinking about this for so long. i've been waiting for this. i've worked for this. and i'm ready to go back. i'm ready to go back. >> reporter: well, all of the schools opening today have their own set of safety protocols in place. they range from only kids being allowed to get out of the car. no parents. that is happening here in san pablo. regular covid testing add many of the schools. in south san francisco, they will be using unit that uses ultraviolet rays. parents can opt out if they are not ready to second their kid back yet. distance learning is an option. kids returning to in person learning are the ones that want to be here that chose to be here. amy hollyfield abc 7 news. oakland unified will return

to in person learning this fall. the district announced a deal with the teachers union late last night. teachers still have to vote to approve this plan. the announcement comes as more students return to the classroom. starting today in person learning is available for prek through grade six and priority students in higher grades. previously in person learning was happening for prek through 2nd grade. families can opt out sending their kids and continue doing distance learning at home. routes will run for students in the newark, oakland, and west contra costa unified school districts. there will be capacity limits. for information on which lines are heading head to the ac transit website or call 511 and say ac transit. the a's game has

postponed because of covid-19 issues. the twins have had at least four players test positive and they are doing more contact testing now, tracing i should say. today's game has been tentatively rescheduled as a a's double header tomorrow. let's take a look at what is going on with our temperatures. we will zoom on down into san francisco where you can see mid to upper 40s are dominating most of our neighborhoods with increasing clouds this morning. we'll have increasing clouds through about 9:00. and then they will quickly retreat back to the coast. we will have a few high clouds this afternoon. temperatures running from the mid 40s to 50 just about everywhere. union city 51. same thing in fairfield. a little milder in pittsburgh and tracy. here's a look at san jose where it's mostly clear. north wind at about 3 miles per hour. so 45 to 50 through 7:00. as we head to noon, 53 at the

and son charged in the connection with 1996 disappearance of a cal poly student will appear in court. paul flowers we was the last person seen with smart before she disappeared. ruben flores is accused of concealing her body. smart's remains has never been found. calls for resignation are getting louder for the embattled mayor of windsor. profesters spent the weekend at popular spots around town. getting the word out for for fo recall. mayor dominic foppoli is under investigation after six women diagnosed him of sexual assault. foppoli who denies the allegations is refusing to resign. instead he announced he would be taken a step back from an active role on the town's

counsel. >> he is still trying to maintain control of the situation. without actually giving up any of his positions of power. >> his sense of entitlement is so deeply engrained that he can't see above that. >> the sheriff's office is investigating the allegations against foppoli. a recall could take months. tesla's auto pilot feature is in the spotlight this morning after a deadly crash in texas. two people died. and now there are questions about who is driving. here is geo benitez. >> reporter: the charred wreckage captured on camera after it crashed into a tree and burst into flames. two men inside were killed. the tesla's high energy battery reigniting over and over again. firefighters trying to put the fire out for four hours with nearly 30,000 gallons of water. the fire eventually put itself

out. now to the question, was the tesla running on auto pilot? firefighters found the men in the front passenger seat and the backseat. police telling abc news there is no indication that anybody anyone was in the driver's seat. the men adjust dropped their wives off at home and wanted to take the tesla out for a test drive. evidence at the scene allegedly showing it was going very that's. three hours before the crash, elon musk tweeting tesla with auto pilot engaged now approaching ten times lower chance of accident than average vehicle. and we've reached out to tesla for comment but have not heard back. police are trying to figure out what exactly caused this crash in the first place. gee know benitez abc news new york. the san joaquin sheriff's office is investigating another death at the sheriff center.

a jumpers parachute got tangled during the decent saturday. her death happened one month after the owner of the sky diving facility was ordered to more than $40 million to the family of another jumper who died. nine deaths are linked to the facility in the last five years. oakland restaurant owner is devastated after his truck crashed into a parklet destroying it. the crash happened just before 3:30 on saturday morning. owner value entee know says police tell him it was a drunk driver. he doesn't think he will rebuild and instead will rely on indoor seating. >> it has been used a lot. it will be a big loss to business. >> one of the first businesses to take advantage of oakland's flex street program last year.

that allowed them to build the parklet. this is one of the more unusual covid cases we have heard. the asian small clod otters had tested positive. the animals have shown many of the symptoms that humans have. like sneezing, runny noses, tiredness, and coughing. the aquarium thinks the animals likely got sick from an employee that wasn't showing symptoms. and they are expected to make a full recovery. a pair of falcons who test atop the uc berkeley campus have welcomed two baby checks and two more could be on the way. parents anne and grinnell have been raising chicks there since 2007. two chicks emerged from their leg saturday morning. and two more have yet to hatch. it could take up to 72 hours between the first and last hatch. a naming contest will be held next month for the chicks. right now it looks like it's

back to you. san francisco commemorating the 115th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake. it served as a meeting spot for people to reunite with their loved ones after the quake. every year a moment of silence is observed to remember those that lost their lives. >> it was a very, very special breed of people who in 1906 actually started the process of the resurrection of san francisco. >> the ceremony also included 30 seconds of fire engine sirens on the exact moment the earthquake hit. new this morning history has been made.

nasa's ingenuity mars helicopter completed its first flight on the red planet. video from nasa shows the team cheer as they received the data from ingenuity. it's the first craft to achieve control. powered flight on a planet beyond earth. there we go. up to four more flights could be attempted to test the basic abilities of the helicopter ingenuity arrived on mars aboard the perseverance rover in february. the main point is, that is exciting. >> way to go science. >> yes. absolutely. coming up, the seven things to know this morning. and one easy thing you can do today to improve your mood. and vaccine trials on kids. we are hearing

we are getting pretty close to summer but today is back to school day for thousands of kids all over the bay area for the first time in more than a year. good morning, it's monday, april 19th. >> we will begin with a quick check on our accuweather forecast with mike nicco. good morning, mike. good morning. a couple things we look for as we transition from the rain season to the dry season to some say june gloom season or may gray season. that is the winds at the golden gate bridge. they are coming out of the west at 15 miles per hour. even more so there we look at fairfield because it lets you

appointment openings or if you have any questions about the vaccine process, you can watch the abc 7 news vaccine team. head to abc7news.com/vaccine. closing arguments in the trial of former minneapolis police officer derek chauvin begin today. both sides get one final chance to appeal to the jury. throughout the trial, prosecutors argue that chauvin murdered george floyd by pressing his knee into floyd's neck. the defense argued drugs and heart issues caused his death. the alameda county sheriff's office says they have no plans to request help from the national guard but they will be working with oakland police and other agencies to respond to any situations that might occur after the chauvin verdict comes down. abc 7 news reporter jr stone talked to business owners who say they are also preparing. >> reporter: in oakland store front after store front covered with fresh plywood as we get

long the deliberations will take. in the oj simpson case, they just took a few hours. in other cases, they could take days. we just don't know. >> reporter: dina berkeley says even video evidence doesn't make for a slam dunk case for the referencing the rodney king excessive force case. as for this case there are three charges against chauvin. second degree unintentional murder being the most serious. >> t hard to know. obviously conviction on all counts could be seen by those who want it to be a form of justice and acquittal on all accounts would be a disappointment to them.. >> reporter: just a hope for those that run businesses that they won't be targeted during personal protests. >> everything something like

jobs plan. the plan provides funding for roads and bridges and railways. and harris will visit a bus manufacturing plant there. she is expected to tout over polls she introduced as senators to convert school buses into electric vehicles. coming up here. a lot of history could be made at the academy awards this sunday. a closer look at the nominees shattering class ceilings for their communities. and aaron rogers' turn is over. the new guest coast we will see on jeopardy tonight. but first we get a check of the weather with meteorologist mike nicco. >> good morning, reggie. high, everybody. let's take a look at how this morning differs a little bit from yesterday morning. this is a little bit milder some of that warmth from yesterday's record heat has spilled over. so temperatures up anywhere three to five degrees warmer this morning. but you know the reverse will happen this afternoon. it will be about three to seven degrees cooler as the sea breeze kicks in. we have 49 in dublin and

danville. 46 in lafayette. the cool spots in our east bay valley. antioch 63 degrees. mid to upper 40s just about everywhere else. we have 50s along the east bay shore. 58 in los gatos. here's a look from the exploratorium. you can see that cloud carve as we look back from pier 15 there into the embarcadero. temperatures will stay in the 50s a the the coast where breezes will pick up a little bit today. they will be especially windy along the northbound coast. 65 to 71. 69 to 75 so you can see not a whole lot of warming by 7:00. low to mid 60s as we head into the 7:00 hour. south of the bay bridge we have a small craft advisory. it will be a northwest wind. it will be perpen kick already to the bridges there. it will be choppy on the water and blustery on our bridges. and high elements of tree pollen the next three days.

the new player, sycamore, gone, pine. i hope that helps. here is sue with your morning commute. that pollen all over the cars too especially from the pine. the san mateo bridge is under a high wind advisory. i thought we would pop down to san jose. that is highway 87. taillights heading in the northbound direction. you can see the lights of the airport there up to the left. and now we flip over to oakland. 880 by the coliseum. the headlights on the left side are heading southbound. the other side past the coliseum. you can see everything is moving quite nicely. problem if you are traveling over the alt mont pass. we have an accident there. now a new accident possibly blocking two lanes. westbound 580 near isabelle. and you can see speeds slowing, approaching the scene. making your drive from tracy all the way to dublin.

peloton is responding to a safety warning about its tread plus treadmill. the company calls it inaccurate and misleading. it comes after the safety commission says there was 39 incidents of small children being injured by the machine. it shows the video of a young boy playing near the tread plus and getting pulled under. there was another incident where a three-year-old boy got trapped under the treadmill and died from a significant injury. peloton says there is no reason to stop using the machine if safety instructions are followed. the commission recommends parents used tread plus in a locked room away from children, keep it unplugged, and hide the
